Fire rages, homes at risk
Little River Band to headline festival
WELL KNOWN for classic
songs Cool Change, Lonesome
Loser and Take it Easy on Me,
Little River Band will return to
New Zealand to headline Selwyn
Sounds on March 2.
The band is known for a string
of instantly recognisable hits
and was described by Eagles
founding member Glenn Frey
as “the best singing band in the
world.”
Total worldwide album sales
and digital downloads of the
band’s music now top 30 million
and the group was the very first
to have had top 10 hits for six
consecutive years.
It will be the first time the
current line-up has toured here
since the introduction of new
rhythm and lead guitarist Colin
Whinnery in February.
Whinnery, of Nashville,
brings a new voice and outlook
to the band’s rhythm section
while sharing lead vocal duties
with the longest standing band
member Wayne Nelson.
Currently on a busy tour
schedule in the United States, the
band will only have a week break
between a February 22 show in
California and Selwyn Sounds.

Originally formed in
Melbourne in 1975, the band’s
sound quickly became popular.
Within eight months of forming,
Little River Band had three
Australian top 20 singles and
two top 10 albums.
They first travelled to the US in
1976 and are now based there.
The line-up of members has
changed many times over the
years and is now completely
different from the original
group. The last original member
to leave was Derek Pellicci in the
1990s.
The last Australian member,
Greg Hind, left the group earlier
this year and was replaced by
Whinnery.
Nelson fronts the band on lead
vocals and bass, supported by
keyboardist Chris Marion, lead
guitarist Rich Herring, drummer
Ryan Ricks and newcomer
Whinnery.
Over their last few shows, the
band has often opened with It’s
A Long Way There before closing
the set with crowd-favourite
Lonesome Loser.
The band was inducted into
the Australian Recording
Industry Association hall of
fame at the 18th annual ARIA
Music Awards in 2004 and Cool
Change is rated as one of the top
30 Australian songs of all time.
