Earthquake strengthening
for Kmart in The Palms
• By Julia Evans
KMART’S SITE in The Palms
Shopping Centre has a rating of
less than 34 per cent of the new
building standard.
It comes following the store’s
sudden closure for repairs a
week ago.
The building was added to the
Ministry of Business, Innovation
and Employment’s register
of earthquake-prone buildings
on October 4.
A spokesperson for The Palms
said the current rating of the
store does not meet the 34 per
cent threshold, making the
works a necessity to ensure it
meets all standards for compliance.
“The necessary consents and
approvals have been obtained,
and the seismic strengthening
upgrades are under way. The
Palms is working hard to confirm
a reopening date, and we
aim to have an update as soon as
possible.”
The new building standard
said earthquake-prone buildings
are those “likely to collapse
causing injury or death, or
damage to any other property,
during or following a moderate
earthquake.”
A spokesperson for Kmart
told The Star the shop temporarily
closed in order to undergo
some seismic strengthening upgrades,
following feedback from
a recent routine assessment.
“Although the store passed all
safety assessments, additional
recommendations were made
given that Christchurch is an
area with high levels of seismic
activity. We decided to implement
improvements immediately,
as the safety of our team
members and customers is our
number one priority.”
A block of eight flats on the
central city’s Dorset St were also
added to the register last month.
It is a category one heritage
building.
There are currently 588
buildings in Christchurch on the
Government’s earthquake-prone
building register.
