Mission, values, history, objectives<br />
Mission<br />
Our mission is to develop a university which<br />
is continuously engaged with the needs <strong>of</strong><br />
the community it serves through educating<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essionals pr<strong>of</strong>essionally, and generating<br />
knowledge and research to address present<br />
and anticipated needs.<br />
Values<br />
The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Canberra</strong>’s values are<br />
embraced in its sense <strong>of</strong> purpose and<br />
commitment to:<br />
> producing graduates with the knowledge<br />
and skills which equip them for success<br />
in pr<strong>of</strong>essional life;<br />
> producing graduates who accept service<br />
to the community as the primary purpose<br />
for pr<strong>of</strong>essional life;<br />
> producing graduates whose commitment<br />
to equity principles will enable them to<br />
play an important part in the processes<br />
<strong>of</strong> reconciliation;<br />
> producing excellent scholarship and research;<br />
> maintaining and enhancing a harmonious<br />

History<br />
The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Canberra</strong> was established by the Commonwealth<br />
Government in 1967 as the <strong>Canberra</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Advanced Education.<br />
Students were enrolled on a part-time basis in 1968 and full-time<br />
teaching began the following year.<br />
The Bill for an Act to establish and incorporate a <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Canberra</strong> under the sponsorship <strong>of</strong> Monash <strong>University</strong> and to<br />
repeal the <strong>Canberra</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Advanced Education Act 1967 was<br />
assented to by the Governor-General on 28 December 1989. The<br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Canberra</strong> Act 1989 came into effect on 1 January 1990.<br />
Sponsorship by Monash <strong>University</strong> concluded at the end <strong>of</strong> 1993.<br />
The <strong>University</strong> passed to the jurisdiction <strong>of</strong> the government <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Australian Capital Territory on 1 December 1997. The <strong>University</strong><br />
is a member <strong>of</strong> the Unified National System, and <strong>of</strong> the Association<br />
<strong>of</strong> Commonwealth Universities.<br />
Objectives from Strategic Plan 1999-2003<br />
1. To provide a learning climate in which undergraduate, postgraduate<br />
and continuing education programs focus on students’ needs,<br />
are intellectually stimulating, are appropriate to the pr<strong>of</strong>essions,<br />
and develop the capacity for lifelong learning.<br />
2. To create, collect, advance and disseminate knowledge and enquiry<br />
in ways which are closely linked with and enrich the <strong>University</strong>’s<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essional focus and that strengthen the knowledge and<br />
intellectual base <strong>of</strong> the pr<strong>of</strong>essions.<br />
3. To maintain and develop support systems which will improve and<br />
enhance the work <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>.<br />
4. To ensure that the <strong>University</strong>’s academic programs, infrastructure<br />
and facilities provide for flexible learning practices which maintain<br />
quality and focus on student needs to ensure the wide availability<br />
<strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>’s pr<strong>of</strong>essional education.<br />
5. To provide intellectual leadership and service to the pr<strong>of</strong>essions,<br />
industry, governments and to the wider society, particularly<br />
<strong>Canberra</strong> and the Australian Capital Region.<br />
6. To provide a complete intellectual resource, from training for<br />
admission to the pr<strong>of</strong>essions, to continuing education within<br />
the pr<strong>of</strong>essions, and research for the pr<strong>of</strong>essions to enable<br />
them to serve the society from which they are drawn.
