She attended Stoney Croft School, often riding there on horseback, and boarded in Silton for high school. Kay worked in a war factory in Brantford, ON, where she riveted wing parts for Air Force bombers. She was called home to care for her ailing mother who later died when Kay was only 20 years old. After attending Normal School in Moose Jaw, she taught at Eddy School east of Bulyea. In 1947 Kay married John MacPheat. They farmed in the Marieton District for over 40 years where they raised their 3 children. Kay and John retired to Strasbourg in 1989. Kay was a 4-H leader, an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion Auxiliary, the Silton and Strasbourg United Churches, and a founding member of the Last Mountain Pioneer Home Auxiliary. Kay passed away peacefully at the age of 94. She was predeceased by her husband John and daughter Audrey. Cherishing her memory are her son Murray (Lorraine); daughter Lois (Hugh) Roth; son-in-law Doug (Shelly) Wichman; former daughter-in-law Mary (Bill) Nosen; grandchildren: Curtis (Christie) MacPheat, Ryan (Nadine) MacPheat, Monique (Mark) Walkingshaw, Tara McKenzie (Scott Larsson), Michael (Megan) Roth, David Roth (Laurie), Walter Wichman and Dallas Wichman; twelve great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews who fondly remember Aunty Kay. The family would like to thank the staff at Last Mountain Pioneer Home for their compassionate care and all those who helped celebrate Kay’s life with calls, cards, food and prayer. Funds may be used to support Canadian programs and in local communities for support of Veterans and their families (for example Bursaries) and for Special needs in the community. The Poppy Campaign is organized and run by local Legion volunteers at over 1400 branches across Canada and abroad. Poppy Funds are held in trust at every level of the Legion and the use of these trust funds are strictly controlled, with appropriate approval processes. Branch executives are accountable for Poppy Fund expenditures and are required to inform the public through local media of the results of their campaign, including contributions received and disposition of funds.
