CHERISH THE MOMENT.
The allegedly selfish tone of the above lines drowns out
the positive aspect of the statement: in times of hustle
and bustle, thirst for action and chasing "likes" we tend
to forget ourselves and live in the moment.
Certainly, every moment is followed
by the next, so there should
be enough of them for us to enjoy.
However, it is time to focus on being
fully present. Being aware of life. Because
life is as unique as every one
of us.
Listening to the soft rustling of the
leaves in autumn, marvelling at the
dancing dewdrops in the spring sun,
enjoying the humming of the bees in
summer or feeling the snow. Taking a
look behind the scenes of life. Deliberately
making time to do exactly this. And doing it
with all of our senses.
Because time flows relentlessly,
whether we like it or not. What happened
will be forever stored in the
past. Only our memories bear witness
to things that once existed. And this treasure
chest of memories wants to be filled.
With trivial things that often eke out an existence
on the side lines. The ostensible remedy for this
fast-paced life is to use time, our most precious good,
purposefully. Let’s take it back up on the fully-lit stage of
approval. In days gone by, life was led in harmony with
the sun and the moon. At sunrise people went up to the
mountain pasture or into the forests or fields to work.
They went to bed when the sun bade the day farewell.
With the invention of technology, we
took away some of time’s power.
With our smartphones ready, we desperately
try to capture the moment.
But while we're looking for the perfect
selfie, we’ve already lost sight of
the reason why we're staring at the
screen in the first place instead of
just enjoying the moment and simply
leaving the phone on standby without
having a guilty conscience. Of
course, it is now part of our adventures
to capture them on some device
and share them adding #voilässig
with our friends. But even Paracelsus
knew that it is the dose that makes the
poison. This is the reason why, for more
than a decade, we have put a KOMMA behind
everyday life by conviction. From the
Greek κόμμα (comma), which stands for cut or
break. Making a cut to living our lives to the fullest and
not getting lost in the daily routine.

RELAXING DELUXE.
Recharging your batteries, leaving the hectic rush outside. The hosts fill us in
on their secret. Memories of nocturnal snacking come to life – just think of
Hans in Luck (KOMMA nr.4 p.29), who was caught red-handed rummaging in
the pantry. But let's leave the culinary capers aside, there's another way to unwind.
The members of the host family tell the inside story and reveal what they
do to relax in their free time.
DANIELA, who climbs high
to come down.
To get the perfect view on things,
Daniela escapes to the mountains.
She either does that by cycling,
walking at a fast pace or with snow
under her skis – ski tips pointing
uphill. To reset her hard drive, she
likes to sit on mountain tops in meditation
posture and look into the
distance, preferably in total silence
and all by herself. Absorbing energy
through short Pranayama sessions.
Exhaling the daily life, inhaling the
fresh mountain air. Daniela loves it!
Not to forget her sociability and
bantering and laughing with her
favourite people. “That gives me
strength“ she smiles – right before
she jumps head first into the refreshing
lake Hochtorsee. To unwind.

The early bird catches the worm.
Hans, as a convinced "early bird
carver", knows just that and can
be found on the freshly prepared
Bernkogel slopes early in the morning.
Right in front of their front
door, what a luxury! Just like his
daughter, he likes to conquer the
winterly peaks by going on ski tours,
preferably to the Geierkogel or the
Spieleckkogel mountain, drawing
strength from nature.
Before the daily business starts,
the hotelier starts his summer days
with a morning run. A daily dose of
“short escape” is how he refers to
his sport session. During the summer
time, the skis are replaced by
the e-bike. Hans’ favourite bike tour
is to Tirol and back via the Asitz
mountain. Recharging by moving.

We, the Unterkofler family,
are looking forward to it!
Eva has a soft spot for beautiful things. Dresses, perfumes, lotions and mountains.
This doesn’t come as a surprise. But Eva, who is a former ski instructor,
also feels frequently drawn to climb the Kohlmais mountain. When a wonderful
meadow of flowers caresses her nose, her moment of relaxation is perfect.
Sometimes, Eva feels like having a workout. Then she takes her e-bike into the
valley head. The reward for the hard-working athletes? Having brunch at the
Saalalm. But mostly, Eva likes to sit on her eva,ALM – to look at people, chat and
enjoy the food. Happiness is often so close. Embrace it!

eva,VILLAGE = THE VILLAGE.
Saalbach is a village. This is hard to believe during
the busy winter months, but yes, we “Saalbacher”
live in a village. With all the amenities of this social
structure. Tradition is not only staged, it is lived in
the Glemmtal valley. The Lederhosen and Dirndls are
not a costume, but rather a proud sign of belonging,
worn by young and old.
The dirndl especially reveals the origin of the woman
wearing it. Namely whether she is from the Pongau,
Lungau or Pinzgau region. A proud diversification of
valleys and regions. Rumour has it that these differences
were once established to facilitate love affairs
between the people of the valleys. Because the apron
reveals more than you might think at first glance. If
a woman has tied her apron on the left side, the fair
lady is single and ready to mingle. Married women or
women in serious relationships tie their apron on the
right side. This way, men get all vital information via
the costume and the apron of their beloved.
Probably the Tinder of former days ;-)
THE VILLAGE = PEACE AND CALM
At least, the church bells are not drowned out by
traffic noise etc. Particularly at eva, you can hear
their enchanting sound clearly, but not in an irritating
way. The church bells of Saalbach are like the
clockwork of the village.
Apart from telling the time, the bells warn of thunderstorms
and hail by relentless ringing. Alarm bells, so to
speak. In addition, they ring to wish newly wedded couples
happiness and, unfortunately, also to give farewell
at someone’s funeral. Because everyone knows everyone
in Saalbach.
The Saalbach church and its bells are old, very old.
Long before the discovery of America, those church
bells rang in the Glemmtal valley for mass. We know
that they date back to before 1410, but no exact year.
Churches have always been important for the development
of settlements and villages. In 1489, Archbishop
Johannes III Beckenschlager granted the peasant community
the right to trade in the town centre and they
no longer have to deliver the laboriously produced products
to Zell am See or Saalfelden.
The birth of an economically successful village. And years
later, the skis came along, but that is another story.
A COW IN THE VILLAGE.
The term “one-horse town” (we Austrians call it
“cow-village”) is rather pejorative, but there is some
truth to it. Because the intact flora and fauna in Saalbach
knows how to beguile. And the cow on the alpine
meadows simply belongs in that picture. You
will find mostly Pinzgauer cows on our meadows. A
chestnut-and-white-coloured very sturdy breed. Not to
be confused with the Simmental breed. The Pinzgauer
have been native to the region for a long time, but the
name of the breed was first mentioned in writing in
1846. As cattle that could be used for three different
purposes, it was once an important part of the local
farms. In addition to their function as milk and meat
suppliers, the valuable animals were also used as draft
animals for ploughs and heavy loads. Only the wealthiest
of the farmers had horses for these tasks.
Today, the Pinzgauer cattle are real jet setters. A frugal
export hit of local breeders. Their name proudly reveals
their origin. The cows on the alpine pastures are
proof that you will find only regional food on your plate.
At least that is the case at eva,. The head chef likes
to create his dishes from local products and therefore
the guests’ taste buds are cosseted by local meat and
fish as well as herbs from the hotel’s garden.
The apricots come from the Wachau – hand-picked by
Hans and Eva Unterkofler. Because Kaiserschmarrn*
with Marillenröster** is part of our menu, even
though it is not an invention from the Pinzgauer region.
It once was the emperor's favourite dish during
hunting season. Today, it is the favourite dish of many
guests at eva,. “Idyllic world” may sound a bit plump
in times of digitalisation and bustling activities.
But there is a lot of truth behind it, for despite modernity
finding its way to Saalbach, village life has a firm place
in all hearts and this is also lived and cherished. Village

CULINARY DELIGHTS.
Lovers of fresh air start their rounds at the
breakfast buffet as early as 7.30 am –
knowing full well that they could also come
later. People who like to party need to
regenerate, of course, and therefore, night owls
and late risers can enjoy bread rolls,
muesli, croissants, home-made honey and
whatever their heart desires until 1 pm.
The afternoon snacks strengthen athletes
and those seeking a break before the crowning
finale of the day, the 5-course menu or
theme buffet in the evening.

THE SILENCE
A feeling of intimate peace when your eyes wander
over the peaks into the distance. It appears a bit sublime,
here, at the POINTS OF INTEREST of the wide
and panoramic views. Looking far into the distance
yet resting in the here and now ... we like!
* THE CLASSIC
It is everything but miserable up here. This mountain
lies just a little hidden in the head of the valley, ruggedly
soaring up into the sky. We are talking about
the legendary Tristkogel mountain (trist=miserable in
German) with a height of 2,095 m. A proud mountain
inviting to sunrise hikes almost all year round thanks
to the magnificent east-facing panoramic view.
THE mountain for diligent hikers or for alpine conquest
by ski tourers. But beware: in winter the Tristkogel
can become a bit dangerous. Being experienced
and careful is a priority here ... we are in the mountains,
after all. Daniela loves this mountain – particularly
climbing it. She smiles and tells us about her
memories. Tip: Her favourite spot, lake Hochtorsee is
not far from here ;-)
* FOR EVERYONE
The Schattberg offers skiers great views. Right at the
exit of the mountain station, they will have a view on
the Hohe Tauern mountains. This view gets even better
as soon as they have reached the Stemmerkogel.
This “march” (one needs to take off their skis to get
there) is followed by a ride through powder snow back
on the slope.
In summer time, you can enjoy beautiful views during
the Seven Summits long-distance hike, where the cable
car ride uphill is included. Seven lofty peaks allow
those seeking views to take enough breathers. With
a hiking time of approximately nine hours, these moments
of rest are really necessary.

IN THE DISTANCE.
* AN OCEAN OF STONES
The path to Schönleiten is a small highlight of every
hike. The view on the Leoganger Steinberge (stone
mountains) is like a constant companion before your
eyes meet the Steinerne Meer (Ocean of stones).
They are like balm for the soul with their impressive,
almost majestic charisma.
Visiting the Wildenkarkogel mountain in winter for a
moment of peace and quiet really pays off. Your memories
will thank you later.
* IN THE FOREST...
...yet far up high. Between treetops and squirrels, your
thoughts will quiet down. You can catch a glimpse of
the valley through the branches. The Baumzipfelweg
(treetop path) at the end of the Saalbach valley offers
an unusual view full of power and zest for action.

GPS devices are everywhere: on people’s wrists, in
their pockets, on the displays of their mobiles, ... POIs
(points of interest) are precise coordinates with added
value for the user.

NAMASTE.
When two complementary worlds such as yoga
and hiking meet, a mini-big-bang-like, almost
alchemistic moment arises, which produces something
wonderful and new: the way to achieve a
deep inner silence.
[ Yoga ]
eva, has been offering “alpinised” Yoga for some
time now. The liaison of mountain panorama, fresh
air, gentle body movements and deep breathing
exercises goes together just like Kaiserschmarrn and
Marillenröster. A pleasure for body and soul!
Gunter is our man for the yoga practise. The passionate
mountaineer has been practising yoga for
decades and gives classes at eva,VILLAGE a couple
of times per week. He does, whenever possible and
preferably outside, a bit further up in the mountains.
Yoga in the mountains is a great escape from everyday
life, and the majestic mountains and picturesque
nature make you feel a little bit smaller and your
thoughts and worries appear less important. Therefore,
the surroundings create the perfect conditions
for undisturbed deep relaxation.

THE MILLER’S PLEASURES.
The popular German phrase
“Wandering is the miller’s joy”
has actually nothing to with a miller.
This is the first line of a poem called “Wandering”
by Wilhelm Müller (German for miller)
dated back to the year 1821.
[ Hiking ]
During the days of our great-grandmothers, wandering
was a form of travelling. Carrying only the bare
necessities, people walked great distances, often not
knowing how far they would get. Change. Wandering
was a necessity to get to foreign places. Today, this
intention has mostly given way to hiking, a purpose-free
pursuit. The counterpart to purpose-bound
wandering so to speak. At least this is how it is defined.
Nowadays, and at least during your holidays,
the "purpose" of hiking is to improve your physical
fitness in order to promote mental and physical wellbeing.
Whether Nordic walking, speed hiking or winter hiking.
Because monotonously trudging uphill can bring
us into a meditative state. Mountain air floods your
lungs and the endurance activity causes your body to
reach a Runner's High*. Ideal conditions for feelings
of happiness high up on the peaks of Saalbach, where
hikers are rewarded with the most beautiful panorama
and views.

SOUL BIKING
Mountain bikes of all kinds are
raced over the trails towards the
destination Saalbach – cranked
uphill in a way that makes you
sweat as well as rolled in a slower
pace along the cycle paths with
pleasure. Saalbach is mountain
biking! Here, everyone who is up
for it has the possibility to experience
a cool breeze on the bike.
The common thread of these
different types of biking is the
joy during and after the ride. Let
your soul relax a little, if you like.
For you forget all the effort once
you see the summit uphill and
once the adrenaline floods your
bloodstream, while you conquer
a carpet of roots or when you cruise
along the extensive network of
cycle paths lost in your thoughts.
It’s a pleasure for your soul.

KOGEL
HOPPING.
FROM THE BERNKOGEL TO THE REITERKOGEL.
This tour recommendation for experienced bikers
shows a vast variety – just like so many other things
in Saalbach. Starting at eva,VILLAGE you first take
the Spielbergweg road and enjoy the first metres
uphill to the Spielberghaus. Just before the Freeride
Hotspot, turn left towards the Bernkogel. From now
on you can only hear the quiet buzzing of your chain,
which spirals up man and machine serpentine by
serpentine. With an “E” (bike) it's easier of course,
however, the experience remains the same.
At the Bernkogel, the beautiful Wetterkreuz reservoir
is now visible. Directly behind it, the Wetterkreuz trail
is ready for some experienced bikers. A wonderful
single trail which is very rare in this form. But the
destination is further up ... The destination is the Reiterkogel.
Only steep sections now separate you from
the moment when you’ve conquered the peak.
Moments later, you reach the summit, selfie time
for pure #evamoments. Then you let the bike roll towards
the chalet Rosswaldhütte for a stop – the hotspot
for Kaiserschmarrn and the best fried chicken
salad. Enjoy your meal!
Via the Blue Line or at a slower pace via the Forstweg
road back into the valley. You decide! On this tour
you shouldn't be surprised if you spot some familiar
faces from the eva,. Daniela for example often uses
this tour to clear her head, on an e-bike – of course.

THE PANORAMA HIDEAWAY
WITH A HEART.
OUR HEART IS THE EVA,GARDEN.
The eva,GARDEN is basically the mother of the whole
eva, businesses. And just like a mother, the hotel
radiates this cosy warmth. She hugs you and whispers:
“Welcome home!”
The sportiness is also there, so cuddly and active people
will find the perfect hideaway in direct proximity
to the lifts and above the roofs of Saalbach. And you
can snore comfortably in the eva,GARDEN too, thanks
to modern bed systems.
On the opposite side, the Schattberg attracts attention,
while you enjoy the garden in summer. Rest your
legs in the summer and put your head in the snow
in the winter to cool down, if the "Get to know each
other"-sauna was a little bit too hot. Only a few metres
separate the connoisseur from the centre and the
eva,VILLAGE. In the winter, we like to use a shuttle,
because we want to save your energy for the slopes.

NICE BREAD.
The burgers at eva,ALM are particularly tasty. Apart from regional
ingredients, a tasty Vinschgerl – the original bread of the
mountain people – makes the burgers so special. Thanks to its
proximity to Tyrol and South Tyrol, the flat bread roll made from
rye, wheat, sourdough and yeast feels at home in Saalbach as
well and harmonising wonderfully with the Pinzgauer beef and
avocado. Fondue, Almschmaus (alpine feast), Jausnbrettl (wooden
plate with snacks), hot breads, potato goulash, apple strudel
and even more delicacies can be found in the eva,ALM, from
high noon until late in the evening. Enjoy your meal!
ALPINE PIT STOP.
The “after” is trickier at the eva,ALM.
The “après”, however, is way easier.
The eva,ALM is the designated meeting point
after tours and trail-surfing experiences
of the mountain bike community and,
especially in the winter, the place to go for
skiers. 5 o'clock tea or après-ski – just as you

THE POWER OF SNOW.
It is not only possible to only see the positive sides,
even if they predominate. In places like Saalbach,
nature has a decisive influence on life. Enormous
and fortunately intact, it has an influence on all of us.
Thanks to the panoramic weather during the winter
months, Saalbach is blessed with lots of snow. A
snow hole, you can hear beyond the borders of the
valley. The snow is up to 3 m deep on the mountains
in February and if these masses start to move uncontrollably,
it has undesirable consequences.
Usually it is the reckless sportsmen who overlook the
warning signs of the crystals in their search for the
best deep snow. Snow crystals, of course. Because
there are numerous methods to check the snow
cover. It consists of different layers of snow, formed
and shaped by the weather. The “floating snow”
reveals itself to be particularly treacherous.
Beaker crystals are formed and behave like a ball bearing
under a heavy layer of snow. Be aware of snow
slabs!
UNSERE WINTER HARD FACTS:
In order to reveal the layers, a shaft is dug in the
snow cover with a shovel. This procedure is called
snow profile. Ideally not under the direct influence
of the sun. Otherwise this could deform the crystals
during the inspection.
Even during the digging you can already recognise
the different layers. When you wipe over the layers
without gloves, you can easily recognise the difference
of the soft and hard snow layers. The hardness
test of the snow cover follows. In the order "fist", "4
fingers", "1 finger", "pencil" and "knife" you have to
try to penetrate the snow layers and thus receive information
about the hardness of the snow cover.

ICE WOULD BE THE HARDEST FORM OF SNOW. IT
BECOMES DIFFICULT WITH THE KNIFE AS WELL.
STAY SAFE.
Before you start a ski tour or a demanding
powder run, it is essential to check
the avalanche transceiver at the designated
points and information boards at
various mountain stations on the mountain
railways. And don’t forget the "buddy
system"! Never go out on your own
into the mountains!

STAR GUEST SNOW.
If you go downhill and have tears of joy in your eyes,
it is usually the same uphill. And – as an exception
– in this case, uphill means without a gondola. The
Pinzgauer Grasberge (grass mountains) are the gentle
and southernmost foothills of the Kitzbüheler Alps
and they are part of the Greywacke zone. The hills are
tame yet strong in character, with differences in altitude
of up to 1,100 m. The Geißstein, with a height
of 2,363 m, is the highest mountain in the Glemmtal
valley. As the final ascent on the Seven Summits hike
in the summer, the summit is reserved for experienced
alpinists only in the winter months. But let’s go
back to the gentle side. The special topography, largely
without high alpine climbing passages, secures
Saalbach's reputation in winter as an absolute insider
tip for ski tourers and free riding fans.
But the mountains aren’t always gentle. Further up,
above the forest line, snow masses often pile up and
are usually directed down to the valley in a controlled
manner. Avalanches.
LO.LA * GAZEX ®
The correct assessment of the avalanche danger is extremely
complex and there are experts needed for this.
That is the reason why LO.LA exists. No, not a beautiful
girl from the alpine pastures, no! LO.LA ... Lokale Lawinenlage
(local avalanche situation)
In the free riding paradise Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang
Fieberbrunn, the system of LO.LA* has been used
for several years. The passionate deep powder snow
lover can easily find out about the avalanche situation
on the official Saalbach website. In addition to the
ground-breaking and easy-to-understand key figures, an
avalanche expert provides additional information and
possible sources of danger.
THE BLASTERS IN THE SNOW.
In the skiing area, you may hear an explosion from
time to time. The avalanche blasters are doing their
job. Their task is to defuse dangerous avalanche slopes
by targeted "blasting".
This is done with various methods. The precipitation
of the previous night is measured daily at the
measuring stations. If this value shows precipitation
amounts of 20–30 cm, then a gas/oxygen mixture is
blown up via fixed GAZEX® cannons.
Basically with air pressure. If there is more precipitation,
the blasters go around the neuralgic areas in a
helicopter and drop the emulsion explosive (lawinit)
in blocks of 2.5 or 5 kg. This special, harmless for nature,
explosive is used to push the snow slabs downhill
in a controlled way.
A partly adventurous endeavour by specially trained
experts who can assess the snow situation from a
distance as well as the blasting technique.

Even on Christmas Eve, people meet at
eva, – year after year. Christmas is a very
personal affair at eva,: for years now eva,
has offered a Christmas tree service. You
just choose the size and colours of your
tree for your suite and give your wish list
to our angel at the front desk.
Everyone decides for themselves how to
celebrate: whether in an intimate or quiet
setting in their room or in the eva,Lobby
with Santa Claus, Christkind and many delicacies.
On the evening of 25 December
2018, there will be the traditional torchlight
hike with Hans, the head of the house.
And quite a few of our Christmas guests
prefer to stay over New Year's Eve and
bring in the New Year with us.

is a yoga teacher. Several times a week, he offers

mysterious world of meditation, breathing technique
