Rebuilding Together.
The program, which helps low income
families and seniors do much-needed
improvements to their homes, will once
again be helping residents in the Little
Farms neighborhood improve their homes
in 2019.
“The township would like to add onto
“Night of the Living Dead” at Westland
Westland High School teachers John
Weddendorf and Chris White were overjoyed
when they realized the drama club’s
fall play would coincide near Halloween.
“We thought it would be the perfect
time to produce a horror show,” said
White. “We rarely get to do horror productions
and we knew we had to take this
opportunity that was presented to us.”
With not many options available, the
co-directors turned to a cult classic from
the 1960s.
“We chose ‘Night of the Living Dead’
because it’s sort of scary, sort of funny,
kind of campy and wholly entertaining,”
said White.
Feeling positive that their students
would love the idea as much as they did,
they gathered them around at the start of
the school year to tell them the good
news. Their reaction, however, was a little
horrifying.
“There were a lot of blank stares,” said
Weddendorf.
Since they had a slight inkling that
some of the teens may not have heard of
George A. Romero’s film, they played a
few clips to give them a feel of what was
in store.
Still, the level of excitement wasn’t
what they had thought it could, or should,
be.
“I’ll admit to being very skeptical,” said
senior Phoebe Henricks. “It looked a bit
cheesy but from a technical aspect I
thought it would be a good challenge.”
Since joining the drama club her freshman
year, Henricks has spent most of her
time off the stage managing the sounds
and lights. She said after some further
contemplation of “Night of the Living
Dead,” she warmed up to the idea.
“What I love about it is that it’s in
black and white,” she said. “The script also calls for
that so we’ve been working really hard to make it look
as spooky as possible with the lighting effects. I’m really
proud of what we all have managed to come up with
so far.”
Like Henricks, the rest of the students slowly came
around to the idea, especially the ones who wanted to
play zombies. Weddendorf said the excitement about
playing ravenous and slow-moving corpses didn’t come
as a surprise.
“I often see them in that zombie-like state,” he said
dryly.
Shortly after the announcement was made, they
had auditions to find their leading humans, Barbara
and Ben.
In the film, Barbara is an emotionally traumatized
young woman who is prone to screaming and crying,
while Ben is more measured but equally frazzled by
the situation. Senior Wesley Estep, who will be portraying
Ben, said he chose not to watch the film beforehand
for character clues, while Layne Egelhoff, who
portrays Barbara, said she did.
“I wanted to get a real feel for it,” she said. “It’s definitely
a film you have to learn to appreciate.”
She said she was interested in Barbara because of
her fragile emotional state, but initially wary of how to
portray her.
“I found the screaming aspect to be easy,” she said
with a laugh. “But it’s hard to go mute and rock back
and forth all the time. That gets kind of boring.”
For more than two months, the cast and crew have
been hard at work, perfecting the set, lighting, dialogue
and makeup. Some have even went beyond their
duties and spent hours looking at zombie makeup and
movement tutorials online.
“We’ve really gotten into this,” said Dakari
McLaughlin, a sophomore who is playing a zombie.
“We’re excited for people to see it,” added
Audriauna Cunningham, another sophomore zombie.
Estep said he looks forward to seeing the reaction
from the audience.
“I think they’ll be surprised by how good this is,” he
said. “There are a lot of physical aspects to this play,
there’s some horror, some humor, a lot of humanity
and it’s really engaging.”
Egelhoff echoed his statement and said she hopes
the community will come out to see their version of
“Night of the Living Dead.”
“I know a lot of people, especially some of our peers,
think the drama club is stupid,” she said. “But we put
so much energy and heart into what we are doing and
I would just love if people could come out and see what
we’ve been working so hard on.”
The Westland High School Drama Club will present
George A. Romero’s “Night of the Living Dead” on Nov.
2 and 3. The show time for Nov. 2 is at 7:30 p.m., while
the show times for Nov. 3 are at 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
The Nov. 3 matinee will have activities such as zombie
face painting and crafts.
Tickets for the shows are $5 for adults and $4 for
students. The performances will take place in the auditorium
at the school, located at 146 Galloway Road,
on exterior home improvements,” said
Tracy Hatmaker, township administrator.
“Between the labor and skilled trade this
organization provides to residents, it
seems worth it to the township to invest a
little money as well.”
Hatmaker said approximately 20 homes
will be improved in Little Farms in 2019.
In 2018, the township also invested
$50,000 for home improvements with the
organization. The 2019 applications are
currently being accepted and residents can
Holiday Events in Prairie Township
The board discussed upcoming holiday
events, including the annual Santa’s mailbox,
Elf on the Shelf contest and Holiday
Tree Lighting.
Area children can mail a letter directly
to Santa this holiday via the Prairie
Township Community Center’s Santa’s
Mailbox Program. The event will take
place from Nov. 26 to Dec. 17.
“Children will receive a reply from
Santa directly from the North Pole,” said
James Gant, director of the Prairie
Township Community Center.
To ensure delivery, children must
include their full name, complete address
with zip code and postage.
Also, this year the community center
will once again be having its annual Elf on
the Shelf contest. This contest will also
take place from Nov. 26 through Dec. 17
and give children the opportunity to enter
to win a new bicycle.
“Children will look for the elf dolls at
local businesses and get signatures from
the businesses after finding them,” Gant
said. “Once they find each elf, they can
turn their sheet in at the community center
for a chance to win a new bike.”
Past businesses that have participated
include the Home Depot, Murray Hill
Dental, the community center and the
Westland Library. Businesses that participate
are asked to donate $20 and the proceeds
go toward the purchase of bicycles.
For a complete list of businesses participating
this year or to learn more about how
to be a part of the event, visit www.prairietownship.org.
The Prairie Township Community
Center will also be hosting the annual
Holiday Tree Lighting. Taking place from 4
to 6 p.m. on Dec. 2, the event will feature
the lighting of the holiday tree, holiday
music and caroling, visits from Santa and
ice sculpting demonstrations.
“There will be crafts and hopefully hot
coco,” Gant said. “People really seem to
look forward to this annual tradition of getting
together as a community and celebrating
the holidays.”
As speeding and traffic accidents continue
to be an issue in Franklin Township,
township officials are taking matters into
their own hands. At a recent board meeting,
the Franklin Township Police
Department announced plans to start
using handheld laser pointers to catch
speeders.
“Officers will be operating these handheld
laser pointers and it will be a tool to
moderate traffic and ensure people don’t
speed,” said Franklin Township Police
Chief Byron Smith. “It won’t be 24/7, but it
will be during busy traffic periods when we
see the most speeding.”
These handheld laser pointers will be
stationed around school zones and other
areas in the township where officials see
the most speeding and accidents. Some of
An outpatient addiction center is in the
Cory McConnell, an expansion business
partner for CleanSlate based in
Brentwood, Tenn., told the Westland Area
Commission at its Oct. 17 meeting that a
medical center is planned for 86 N. Wilson
Road in the Great Western Shopping
Center. However, he did not have a target
opening date.
The center would be staffed by two
physicians and a nurse practitioner. They
would treat people suffering from an addiction
to alcohol or opioids, such as heroin or
prescription painkillers.
Patients are treated with Federal Drug
Administration-approved medications and
care coordination, and treatment is covered
by public and private insurance.
these locations include Frank Road.
According to Smith, residents will be
given civil citations in the form of tickets.
“As we get the signage up, we will start
using these handheld lasers,” Smith said.
“We also are working on getting officers
trained so we can start using these as soon
as possible.”
In other news, South-Western City
Schools District Superintendent Dr. Bill
Wise asked the board for support for a bond
issue that will be on the November ballot.
The 1.86-mill issue will add no new millage
on property tax and would help fund construction
of new buildings for Brookpark,
Finland, Norton and Pleasant View middle
schools and improvements to Jackson
Middle School and the East Franklin
Elementary School building.
The trustees fully supported this, saying
that South-Western City Schools has been
a great partner to the township.
“We have received state-of-the-art
schools and it has cost the taxpayers nothing,”
Fleshman said. “We have amazing
buildings our children get to go to school
in.”
Wise also discussed the technology
upgrades they have invested in for the new
buildings, included geothermal heating
and LED lighting, saving money on energy
costs.
However, some residents had questions
for Wise, particularly related to students
who need special assistance. Several residents
voiced concerns about there not being
enough of these resources across the district,
instead of only at certain schools.
“Students that need more intensive care
go to special instructors,” Wise said. “We do
cluster these students together and sometimes
they have to go to schools not as close
as their home school. We try our best to
provide a level of service, but we have
His announcement of opening such a
clinic on the Westside brought a cheerleader-like
response from commission
member Nancy Day-Achauer who has been
working toward stemming the use and
overdoses related to drugs. She raised her
arms and shouted “Yay!”
Also addressing the commission was
Michael Liggett, community relations coordinator
for the city’s Department of Public
Service. He addressed plans for snow
removal.
He reminded members that the city has
broken streets into three categories: freeways,
major arteries and side streets. He
said freeways get top priority. Major arteries,
such as West Broad and Sullivant,
should be cleared within about 10 hours of
a snow event, and side streets still another
10 hours or depending on how heavy the
snowfall.
Members have been discussing alternative
meeting locations in addition to their
normal meeting place on the second floor of
the Osteopathic Heritage Center at
Doctors Hospital. They have met at the
Darby Dan Party House and also at the
Prairie Township Community Center. No
decision has been made for moving meetings
on a regular basis.
November’s regular
meeting date
falls the night
before Thanksgiving
and members preferred
meeting the
week after the holiday
on Wednesday,
Nov. 28, at 7 p.m., at
the Doctors Hospital
location. The public
is always welcome
at the open meetings.
Program helps students prepare for college in SWCS
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
When you are in high school, the
prospect of college can seem daunting.
There are applications to fill out, financial
aid opportunities to seek, entrance exams
to take and the back-of-the-mind thought of
having to make decisions that could impact
the rest of your life.
“It can be overwhelming for even the
most prepared student,” said Dave
Stewart, deputy superintendent of the
South-Western City Schools District.
In order to try to lessen their tide of anxiety,
the district announced a partnership
with a local non-profit whose mission is to
make the entire transition easier on students.
At the Oct. 22 board of education meeting,
representatives with I Know I Can
spoke about the program and their plan to
implement college and career readiness at
the high school level.
community events
“e Hobbit” at CCHS
Students in the drama club at Central Crossing High School
will perform “The Hobbit.” Show times are at 7 p.m. Nov. 2, 2 p.m.
and 7 p.m. Nov. 3, and 2 p.m. Nov. 4. The school is located at 4500
Big Run South Road in Grove City. Tickets can be purchased at
www.locallevelevents.com.
According to executive director Katina
Fullen, there will be a two-team staff at
each high school, one to serve freshmen
and sophomores, and the other to serve
juniors and seniors. The personnel serving
the freshmen and sophomores are called
“success coaches,” and their job is to motivate
students and get them excited about
higher education.
“The ultimate goal is to make sure they
are on track for the next grade,” Fullen
said.
The personnel serving the juniors and
seniors are called “college advising managers,”
and their job is to prepare students
on filling out applications, seeking scholarships,
studying for examinations and continuing
to motivate them for the next step.
Throughout this process, the I Know I
Can staff will also work with educators and
counselors regarding test scores, grade
point averages, and personal goals of the
students.
During the presentation, board member
Mindy Garverick asked Fullen if this program
was available to every student.
She replied that it was.
“They will need to work hard to avoid
us,” she joked
While the pilot program — which is being
funded through grants by Columbus State
Community College and the Franklin
County Department of Job and Family
Services — kicked off earlier this year, there
are already two I Know I Can employees at
Franklin Heights and Westland High
Schools. There is one employee at Central
Crossing and one at Grove City High
School. Stewart said come January, one
additional employee will be added at each
of the latter two schools.
Stewart said though this program is in
its infancy, an impact is already being felt.
“This summer they held a boot camp for
ACT preparation,” he explained. “There
were over 130 students who participated,
which is phenomenal.”
Another positive result of the program,
he said, was the recent college application
day at Westland where hundreds of students
filled out applications for college and
completed their FAFSA forms.
“I think this program will truly be outstanding
for our district.”
He said it was important for the district
to become involved in this partnership
because of their mutual goals in breaking
barriers for students.
“As I said before, the prospect and
preparation for college can be overwhelming,”
Stewart said. “By implementing these
services and working together, I think it
will go a long way in breaking down barriers
and lessening the fears that many of
these students have.”
The I Know I Can program was established
in 1988 and has been active in the
Columbus City Schools district throughout
that time. Recently, the program has
expanded due to grant funding and is now
at SWCS and at Whitehall.
Clearing bowls for a good cause
By Sandi Latimer
Staff Writer
Residents in need of food are often
dependent upon the food pantries. They
are also dependent upon the generosity of
Franklin County residents.
In addition to direct donations of money
and non-perishable food, often through
food drives at businesses, the popular
Empty Bowls project helps considerably.
“In the past 20 years, Empty Bowls has
raised $257,000 to benefit the Mid-Ohio
Foodbank,” said Marilyn Tomasi, a spokeswoman
for the Foodbank.
It is the Mid-Ohio Foodbank that provides
food to the numerous food pantries in
the county and also provides space for the
Kroger Community Food Bank to operate
out of its Grove City headquarters.
Empty Bowls, a project of the Columbus
Recreation and Parks, has raised thousands
of dollars. In 2016, it raised $20,403
and in 2017 by extending the project to
Winterfest the first weekend in December,
it produced $31,210.
Every dollar donated can provide four
meals, Tomasi said.
People who participate in the monthlong
program can enjoy a bowl of soup, or
two or three, often homemade, for $10, and
have the opportunity to go home with a
hand-made ceramic bowl made at a recreation
and parks site. For Tomasi, and
many others, the bowls make their way to
holiday gifts.
Brittany is a beautiful
tortie. She and her
three kittens were
abandoned in a
parking lot. They
were scared, hungry
and homeless. All
were rescued and
Brittany is at the
adoption center now
awaiting her new home. She is 4 years old,
spayed, microchipped and up to date on vaccines.
She is available for adoption through
Hootie is a typical
chihuahua. He likes
to snuggle, get under
the covers and be
close to you. Once he
knows you, he is
playful and sweet.
Until then, he is
unsure, scared and
hides. Because of his
fearfulness, he would do best in a quiet home
with another dog to play with. Hootie is about
2 years old. He is up for adoption through
Colony Cats and Dogs.
Hoagie is a playful,
wiggly pooch. He’s a
happy and outgoing
pup who will be so
excited to be at your
side. He loves being
around people and
will always look to you
for love and attention.
He’s a big goofy
puppy who does well with other dogs. Adopt
Hoagie from the county dog shelter.
Metro Parks on the ballot
By Lori Smith
Staff Writer
Creating additional parks, trails and
nature programs for central Ohio is the
goal of Columbus and Franklin County
Metro Parks’ levy, which voters will see on
the Nov. 6 ballot.
The 10-year, 0.95-mill levy is proposed
to replace the current 10-year, 0.75 mill
levy expiring at the end of the next year,
explained Metro Parks Executive Director
Tim Moloney. If approved by voters, the
tax would cost the owner of a $100,000
home in Franklin County $33.25 a year
starting in 2020, an increase of $12.82 per
year for the same homeowners.
Moloney said the levy would increase
annual revenue for Metro Parks from $22.6
million to $28.6 million, which is designed
around anticipated growth and development
in central Ohio.
Since the last levy was approved,
Moloney said, the Metro Parks system not
only met all of its goals, but they exceeded
them. They promised three new parks, and
opened four: Walnut Woods, more than
1,000 acres in the Groveport area with
woodlands and fields, restored wetlands
and vernal pools; Rocky Fork, a 1,000 acre
park in New Albany featuring more than
three miles of walking trails, a bridle trail,
dog park, a play area for picnics, and a
large shelter; Scioto Grove, a 620-acre park
Two years ago, an attorney and Army
Reservist took the oath of office to represent the
majority of the West and South sides in the
Statehouse. While he got the most votes, we had
seen this before.
But, Adam Miller has exceeded our expectations
and deserves to continue to represent the
17th District. Make no mistake, passing bills is
not something the legislature has done well this
scandal ridden General Assembly. And while
Miller has a list of bills to help deal with the opioid
crisis, clean up our streets, and increase economic
development, they may have to wait until
next year.
A great legislature is more than just passing
bills, and this is where Adam Miller has been a
breath of fresh air. He lives in the district and
along the Scioto River in Grove City with
trails, picnic areas with shelters, a kids
play area, and overlook decks; and
Homestead, a 44-acre park in Hilliard with
a quiet, country atmosphere with a covered
bridge, train station replica and two barns,
as well as shelters, a fishing pond, play
equipment, courts for sand volleyball and
basketball, and a paved trail.
“Each of these parks is well into the
hundreds of thousands of visitors each
year,” Maloney explained.
With funding from the new levy,
Moloney continued, Metro Parks plans on
adding at least three more parks to accommodate
growth in central Ohio.
Quarry Trails in Hilliard is already in
the planning and design stage and will be
the 20th Metro Park, he explained.
“With the opening of Quarry Trails we
will have a park within five miles of every
doorstep in Franklin County,” Moloney
said, noting this has been a goal of Metro
Parks for some time.
Metro Parks is also looking at the
Northeast side as a possible location for
another park, connecting Rocky Fork to
other already owned parcels such as
Blendon Woods and Innis Woods, Moloney
explained. They do not have a definite plan
for the third location yet, but are looking at
undeveloped parcels of land in anticipation
of future development.
These are not endorsements
The Messenger newspapers would like to
clarify that the candidates and issues featured
in this advertising section are published
as paid political advertisements. These are
NOT endorsements for the candidates and
issues; the Columbus Messenger Company
does not do any political endorsements.
PAID ADVERTISING
Re-elect Adam Miller to
represent the 17th District
spends time throughout the area doing what a lot
of politicians do not do; and that is listen.
Our area has real problems, and they will not
be solved overnight. Washington and Ohio’s
General Assembly are more often more concerned
with their own wins and losses than what
is best for the people they represent.
As Miller recently said, “we need to focus on
issues that affect everyone; rather than spending
time on partisan issues that only divide us and
keep our focus away from jobs, safer streets, and
the opioid crisis.”
Miller is not perfect, but he may be just what
we need at the Statehouse. He deserves two more
years.
PAGE 12 - WESTSIDE MESSENGER - October 28, 2018
To commemorate the 40 years since the
horror classic “Halloween” first came to the
theaters, writers for the latest installment
in the franchise decided to go back in time
and revisit history. No longer are heroine
and villain related. No more are her children.
Ignored are attempts to put shattered
lives back together, and erased are
their on-screen deaths.
Whether you are upset by these changes
depends on how invested you are in the
mythos of “Halloween.” Personally, while I
enjoyed nearly all of the previous films I
was not angered by their decisions. This
was due in large part to the strength of the
overall product and the fact that I always
thought the siblings aspect was a little
lame.
In this film, also titled “Halloween,”
Michael Myers (Nick Castle reprising his
role with an assist from James Jude
Courtney) has been locked away in a maximum
security mental facility since his
apprehension in 1978 and under the care of
both Dr. Samuel Loomis and protégé Dr.
Ranbir Surtain (Haluk Bilginer). Since the
death of his mentor, Dr. Surtain has tried a
variety of new methods to understand the
silent killer while always holding him in
higher esteem. (Unlike Dr. Loomis, Dr.
GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!!!!
Surtain does not believe he is completely
evil.)
It is days away from Michael’s transfer
to a maximum security prison and Dr.
Surtain has allowed two true-crime podcasters
to meet with his star patient.
Inexplicably, one of the journalists whips
out the mask used during his killing spree
and brandishes it about like it’s a winning
lottery ticket.
Thinking their actions had no effect, the
podcasters then try to find sole survivor
Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) for their
sure-to-be-non-award-winning-story. When
they do locate her, she is still residing in
Haddonfield but has created a forest
fortress of a home. While hesitant to be
interviewed, she allows them a few minutes
of her time but swiftly kicks them out
when they bring up her failed marriages,
the forcible removal of her young daughter
from her care and her current mental state.
Meanwhile, said daughter Karen (Judy
Greer) is now a grown woman raising a
teenage daughter of her own. Though she
tries her hardest to keep grandma away,
Allyson (newcomer Andi Matichak) is far
more forgiving of Laurie’s behavior and
keeps inviting her to family events, much
to her mother’s dismay.
the sanitarium is on high alert in preparation
off without a hitch but naturally something
bad happens and his evil is once again
unleashed onto the unsuspecting masses.
There is, however, one person who has
spent the past four decades thinking and
preparing for this moment. And once again,
it is up to a traumatized but now heavily
fortified Laurie Strode to save the day.
The strength of this film does not lay on
the feet of the writing by David Gordon
Green or Danny McBride or on their decision
to alter the mythos; in fact, there is
much to be desired with the plot and dialogue.
Instead, what makes this film an
overall strong product is the presence of
the three leading women. Filling in as the
“new Laurie”, Matichak does admirably as
the skeptical but compassionate teen;
Greer is terrific as the hesitant and angry
mother and daughter, and Curtis is at the
top of her game as the tormented heroine.
This trio, which deftly showcases generational
trauma, lifts this film beyond the
traditional slasher and makes it an engaging
movie to watch despite some pacing
and plotting flaws. Grade: B-
