SPOTLIGHT
Trading Track Shoes for High Heels!
Local Woman to Compete in Miss Florida USA
by Blair Parke
29
The congratulations email came
through her computer, and Summer
Schafers couldn’t believe what it
said: She had been nominated and
chosen to be Miss South West
Orlando to represent her community
as part of the Miss Florida USA
competition in January 2019.
A junior and acclaimed pole-vaulter
at Florida State University, Summer
was used to competitions of the athletic
nature, not a competition where
one would have to wear an evening
gown and talk about a cause onstage
to hundreds of people.
However, with the shock worn off
now, Summer is excited and motivated
to see what this amazing opportunity
will mean for her and for her
chosen platform, the special-needs
community.
“When I think about it, I sort of
chuckle,” she said. “I’m a very outgoing
person. My major is communications,
but I’ve never been put into a
situation like this before. Being in big
heels and a bikini, I just laugh.
“I’ll be in my comfort zone when
I’m talking about special-needs children,
because when I start talking
about these kids and the impact they
have made on my heart, I could go
on talking.”
Close to Heart
Chosen for her academic excellence,
passion for the community, and
encouragement toward all, Summer
will be one of many ladies taking
part in the four-day competition,
Miss USA and Miss Universe competitions.
The January event will take
place in Coral Springs.
Participants take part in interviews
and pageantry showmanship, bringing
awareness to their chosen platform
for causes close to their hearts.
For Summer, the love for her platform
comes from years spent volunteering
and forming lasting friendships with
several special-needs children and
adults.
She became involved with the special-needs
community through OCA
when she was age 10 or 11, growing
in her affection for the children
as she helped out at summer camps.
awareness to the competition when
she helped with a bowl-a-thon in
October. She also participated in
a Princess Day at Arnold Palmer
Hospital for Children, doing arts and
crafts and wearing tiaras with the
young patients.
Looking Ahead
As she prepares for the competition,
Summer will continue her courses
at FSU — her “dream school” — and
she hopes to attain a broadcasting internship
over the summer. People can
hear her now as part of The Voice of
Florida State, FSU’s sports radio program,
where she gives weekly sports
updates.
A recent hip surgery has currently
sidelined Summer from pole- vaulting,
Local resident
Summer Schafers
is named Miss South
West Orlando and
will compete in the
Miss Florida USA
competition in January
“One summer, I got 500 hours and
worked every week, eight hours a day,
and would come home with so many
stories of playing with kids,” she said.
“I never came home with a bad day;
the imprint these kids left on my heart
always made me want to go back every
summer to hang out with them.”
Even as a college student, Summer
still helps out at the OCA camp, most
recently as a summer camp counselor.
“It’s unbelievable how smart they
are, and when people say, ‘specialneeds
[people] have disabilities,’
they don’t have disabilities; they are
just differently able,” she said. “For
them to showcase what they can do
and are capable of, they really are
amazing kids and adults.”
Summer even included those in the
special-needs community to bring
so she is training for the track season
this spring. Previously a gymnast,
Summer deci ded to try out polevaulting
as a freshman at Olympia
High School and ended up becoming
the second freshman girl to clear
12 feet and was No. 1 in Florida for
pole-vaulting her junior year until injuries
occurred.
Whatever the outcome might be
in January, Summer sees this as
an opportunity for her to broaden
her skills and encourage others
to embrace opportunities like this,
too.
“I’m comfortable in my own skin,
and I’m sure once I’m on stage, I
will light up and make the most of
the opportunity,” Summer said.
“You don’t get a lot of opportunities
like this in life, so why not?” ª

“It was way cooler and way better
than I ever imagined,” Blace
Kamaka said. “I had a great time
and made lots of friends.”
Kamaka, who resides in
MetroWest, is referring to his experience
this past summer as a competitor
on America Ninja Warrior
Junior.
Universal Kids, the NBCUniversal
Cable Entertainment Network for
children, premiered American Ninja
Warrior Junior on its network Oct.
13. Nearly 200 boys and girls from
across the country, including four
from the Orlando area, participated.
“It’s amazing that I was picked,”
said Brady Parks, 12, of Apopka.
“Only 64 in my age category were
selected.”
Competing is not new to Parks.
Before becoming a junior ninja warrior,
he was a competitive gymnast.
“Once he saw American Ninja
Warrior on television, he was
completely hooked,” said Alison,
Parks’ mom.
Parks ditched gymnastics
and turned his sights on ninja
FEATURE
Junior Ninja Warriors
Local Kids Compete on National TV
by Leona Braun
(L. to r.) Elena Borges, Blace Kamaka, Ava Long and Brady Parks compete in the
first season of American Ninja Warrior Junior.
competitions around the country.
He currently is competing in trials
for the National Ninja League. The
league holds regional and national
competitions for both adults and
youth.
Elena Borges is 14 years
old. She competed in the 13- to
14-years-old Junior Ninja category.
Trained in gymnastics, Borges
also found that participating in the
National Ninja League was more
to her liking. She lives in Debary
and commutes to Orlando to
train.
Borges hopes everyone watches
and enjoys the show. She had a
viewing party for the premiere but
will be in Georgia, qualifying for
regionals, when her segment airs.
“Everyone in California was so
nice, and it was so organized,” she
said. “I’ll never forget it.”
Another former gymnast, Ava
Long, 12, of Longwood, also competed.
When Long was 9 years
of age, she transitioned from gymnastics
to training to be a circus
trapeze artist.

“With all her upper-body strength,
ninja training was a good fit,” said
Jessica, Long’s mom.
In fact, on the show, Long was
known as the “circus ninja.”
Parks recalled the ratio of boys to
girls in his age category was about
60 percent to 40 percent, and the
girls were just as aggressive as the
boys. Kamaka, Parks and Long did
not know each other before they
became junior ninjas, even though
they trained at the same gyms.
Now they are great friends and so
are their moms.
“Over the last number of years,
we have received an outpouring of
letters asking when is there going
to be a ninja show for kids,” said
Arthur Smith, executive producer
of the American Ninja Warrior
franchise. “People are going to be
amazed at how talented and dedicated
these young ninjas are.”
Young viewers make up the
Emmy-nominated program’s largest
fan base, all waiting to turn 19,
so they can compete on the adult
version of the show.
“American Ninja Warrior Junior
celebrates a kid-centric movement
that everyone can be part of and
enjoy together,” said Deirdre
Brennan, general manager of
Universal Kids. “It will encourage
and inspire kids to push their limits
and not shy away from challenges.”
Training to become ninja warriors
is now the hottest thing in
workout circles, with programs for
both adults and children. There
are two gyms in Orlando that focus
on this kind of endurance training
— Obstacle Ninja Academy
on Lakehurst Drive and NinjaFit
Gym on Orange Blossom Trail. In
addition to general workout equipment,
the gyms are equipped with
rigs set up to duplicate some, but
not all, of the iconic ninja warrior
obstacles. Sonic Swing, Tic Toc,
Spin Cycle and the Warped Wall
are all signature courses on the
program. The gyms train members
to compete on the ninja circuit and
even sent Jason, one of their trainers,
to Los Angeles to work with
Central Florida’s local competitors
during the tapings. Each child was
also assigned a professional, on-set
mentor who provided motivation
and encouragement.
The competitors are not permitted
to divulge the outcome of the
show, which taped 20 episodes.
They and their parents are permitted,
however, to discuss the
upcoming season.
Heather, Kamaka’s mom, recalls
the whirlwind August days in a Los
Angeles studio filled with photo
shoots, taping footage and conducting
interviews in front of green
screens.
“The producers were always
wrangling the kids,” she said.
When asked if she feels like a
celebrity, Long said, “a little bit.”
Kamaka said that classmates at his
school have been seen pointing
and heard saying, “Hey, there’s the
ninja kid.”
It wasn’t just about the competition.
These junior ninjas say the
friendships they made are another
important part of the memorable
experience. Now, the three younger
ninjas train and travel to competitions
together and see others they
met from across the country. They
provide support for each other.
Their moms make sure the preteens
have opportunities to socialize
together, as well.
“We want them also to have fun,”
Heather said. “It’s not just about
competing.”
The tweens all said they look forward
to competing against each
other again in seven years. That
is when they will be old enough to
appear on the original, adult version
of American Ninja Warrior.
The popular competition program,
which was nominated for three
Emmys this year, is based on the
global hit Sasuke, which is now in
its 35th season in Japan.
Although American Ninja Warrior
Junior premiered three weeks ago,
there are still several episodes left.
Viewers can watch the show on
the Universal Kids cable network
Saturday evenings at 7 p.m. Then
watch and cheer for the hometown
junior ninjas!
Fall is notorious for comfort foods,
like pumpkin spice lattes and gameday
nachos. Combine these tempting
seasonal staples with darker, shorter
days, and it can be hard to maintain
an active mindset. Despite the enticement
to indulge, you can keep your
active lifestyle going or even kick off
a new fitness regime.
This year, take advantage of the
winds of change when the seasons
switch and commit to smart habits for
a healthy fall.
• Dress for success. As the temperatures
drop, you may be tempted
to bundle up before heading outdoors
to exercise, and for your warmup
and cool-down period, that’s not a
bad idea. However, while you’re in
the midst of your workout, it’s easy to
get overheated. Wear layers that you
can shed as you begin to sweat, and
consider moisture-wicking materials
that can prevent sweaty clothes from
getting cold in the breeze.
• Stay hydrated. You may not
feel as thirsty when you exercise in
cooler weather, but it’s just as important
to keep your body well-hydrated.
MATTER OF HEALTH
Fall Into a Fitness Routine
When you sweat, you lose more
than just water. An option like Propel
Electrolyte Water helps you replace
what’s lost in sweat through its key
electrolyte — sodium — and supports
hydration by stimulating thirst
and aiding in fluid balance. With
the same level of electrolytes as
Gatorade, zero calories and no sugar,
it can be a perfect choice to support
your active lifestyle.
• Opt for early workouts.
When dark comes early, it can trick
your mind into thinking it’s time to wind
down for the night. Avoid that motivation
pitfall by planning your workout
earlier in the day, such as first thing
in the morning or during your lunch
break. If early mornings are daunting,
remember that it won’t take long to
shift your sleep schedule, and early
exercise is a caffeine-free way to put
some energy into your day.
warm, rich desserts and drinks are
filled with empty calories that can
make all your hard work go to waste.
• Set realistic goals. Having a
long-term goal is a good idea, but be
Fall is the perfect time to exercise outdoors and enjoy cooler, less humid temperatures.
• Find exercises you enjoy.
Forcing yourself through exercises
you despise will only backfire in the
long run. If you’re not a runner, look
for other ways to get your cardio
pumping. Interval walking with varied
paces and elevation can be an
effective alternative, or look at ideas
like kickboxing or aerobics that you
can have fun with while working up
a sweat.
• Indulge in moderation.
Virtually every expert agrees that an
occasional indulgence is perfectly
acceptable, but use caution when the
fall goodies start tempting you. Those
sure to set attainable expectations for
yourself, including some milestones
you can celebrate along the way to
keep your motivation strong. Be realistic
about how much time you can
dedicate to fitness with your other life
demands, so you can set your goals
accordingly.
• Don’t skimp on skin care.
The sun may not be as hot, but if
you’re exercising outdoors, you’re
still at risk for sunburn. Protect any
exposed skin with sunscreen before
working out.
I choose time with
my family.
I think I was experiencing symptoms for a while, but just
hadn’t paid attention. I never expected to hear that I had
stage 4 lung cancer that had spread to my lymph nodes.
Together with my family, doctors at Orlando Health
UF Health Cancer Center determined the best treatment
option for me. And it’s working. I immediately began
to see results.
I am so lucky that I found the right people at the right
time with Orlando Health. Now, I can focus on
doing all the things that I want to do.
I am Carlene,
and I choose Orlando Health.
