It’s all go<br />

in the garden<br />

It is all go in the garden and with Show<br />

Weekend coming up there is plenty of time<br />

to get those tasks done!<br />

Here are some things you can plant this month<br />

Veggies Lettuce, Chillies, Capsicums, Sweet Corn, Cucumbers,<br />

Courgettes, Spinach<br />

Flowers Poppies, Sweet Peas, Alyssum, Marigolds, Begonias, Petunias,<br />

Lobelia<br />

Show weekend is almost here so it is time to prepare to plant out your tomatoes!<br />

If you have started them inside your seedlings will be keen to get into a bigger pot<br />

or garden bed. Tomatoes are hungry feeders so before planting in the ground mix<br />

in our tomato fertiliser so they will have a good start, then feed every 4 weeks until<br />

the season ends.<br />

Once your plant is in fruit make sure you cover them as birds just love those big<br />

plump red tomatoes as much as you do. Cut off their laterals (these are the bits<br />

that grow out from the main stems), as this keeps the plant healthier and the<br />

nutrients go into producing the main fruit.<br />

catching Legionnaires<br />

Disease if you don’t handle<br />

potting mixes and compost<br />

correctly. The bacteria that<br />

cause Legionnaires Disease<br />

are present naturally in the<br />

environment and there is no<br />

method available to eliminate<br />

the bacteria.<br />

So, we must work with<br />

protecting ourselves from the harmful effects of these bacteria, in much the<br />

same way as we protect ourselves from the damage caused to us by exposure<br />

to the sun. Below are some precautions you can take to reduce the risk of<br />

contracting Legionnaires.<br />

• Open bags with a sharp knife – away from the face - in open spaces,<br />

not in enclosed areas like sheds or greenhouses<br />

• Remember to use gloves and masks when handling the mix<br />

• Dampen any dry mix – being care not to inhale dry, dusty mix<br />

• Store bags out of direct sunlight<br />

• Always wash your hands after gardening, and before eating or drinking<br />
