ART
The Royal Albert Dock Liverpool welcomed a new major
commission in late 2018, when Ugo Rondinone’s Liverpool
Mountain became the acclaimed Swiss artist’s first public
work in the UK. Inspired by naturally occurring Hoodoos
(spires or pyramids of rock) and the art of meditative rock
balancing, this 10-metre high sculpture consists of coloured
rocks, stacked vertically which seem to defy gravity.
Its arrival has only increased the area’s art credentials.
Shadowing over the new sculpture is Tate Liverpool, one
of the most critically and commercially successful galleries
in the country. Highlights of its winter season include a
reconstruction of Alex Katz’s studio with many of his major
works in it, a solo exhibition of French artist Fernand Leger
and a dazzling display of Op Art works. However,
visitors can also immerse themselves in the
gallery’s permanent collection, which
is always evolving.
A short walk along
the waterfront is
Open Eye Gallery,
a specialist
photography space
which has a glowing
reputation for its displays
and exhibitions, and will have a
lot of activity this season in the
lead-up to the LOOK Photo Biennial.
TATE LIVERPOOL: OP ART
Walker Art Gallery houses one of Europe’s finest
collections of paintings, drawings, sculpture and
decorative art and is always a must-visit. It has a particularly
busy 2019, with a major exhibition on Charles Rennie
Mackintosh from 15th March and a selection of Leonardo
da Vinci’s greatest drawings from 1st February.
The Bluecoat is the oldest building in the city centre,
and is a true hub for arts. Its galleries are home to several
linked exhibitions throughout the season, and its event
space hosts a regular programme of performance art,
music and drama. It has a long and strong history of
artistic education and development, and there are still
more than 30 studios dotted around the building, some
of which are open to the public with prior booking or for
classes and workshops in skills such as screenprinting or
etching. Finally, make sure you have a look in the wonderful
Bluecoat Display Centre, which showcases contemporary
designers across jewellery, ceramics and ornaments
and is a wonderful place for buying a special gift.
FACT, situated on Wood Street, is the UK’s leading
media arts centre. Its main exhibition for this season is
Broken Symmetries, which brings together artists who
aim to understand and question the physical world by
navigating the shifting realities of modern science.
The rest of the city region has some excellent galleries
as well. Port Sunlight village is arguably a work of art in
itself, and in its centre sits Lady Lever – a beautiful gallery
packed with wonderful eighteenth and nineteenth century
British art and which this season hosts an
exhibition celebrating the magnificent
partnership between Quentin Blake
and illustrator John Yeoman.
