THE ATKINSON Take a look through the round window in the floor outside John Lewis and you’ll glimpse the OLD DOCK - The world’s first commercial enclosed dock which was built around 1710. Visit our website for details of free tours. 12 Southport’s The Atkinson has delved into its archives to present The Art of Noise, a wonderful exhibition of paintings and sculpture documenting the links between visual art and music which runs until 16th March. HERITAGE Just like Stonehenge, Florence and the Taj Mahal – Liverpool also holds UNESCO World Heritage Status. Liverpool’s iconic waterfront is home to the Three Graces – the Cunard Building, the Port of Liverpool Building and of course the Royal Liver Building. Atop of the latter sit two Liver Birds, the symbols and ‘guardians’ of the city, perching 300 feet above the streets below. From spring, Royal Liver Building 360 brings guided public tours to Liverpool’s most iconic landmark for the very first time. For further evidence of why the city is so decorated, take a stroll around the Royal Albert Dock Liverpool. The Dock, which dates back to 1840, is the largest collection of Grade I listed buildings in the country and has played an integral part in Liverpool’s fortunes for more than 170 years. But it is far from just a heritage site – it is nowadays home to exceptional restaurants, bars, museums and some of Liverpool’s most popular visitor attractions. If you want to get a sense of the ever-evolving story of Liverpool, you only need to look up and glance at the buildings. Liverpool has some of the best examples of neoclassical architecture in the world, such as the magnificent DID YOU KNOW? In 2019, Wirral is the City Region’s Borough of Culture. Or just over William Brown Street, visit Central Library to see how stunning original features like the Picton Reading Room have been merged with contemporary architecture to become an architectural wonder. The Georgian Quarter is a very different but equally striking area, home to Liverpool’s two famous cathedrals; the soaring neo-gothic Liverpool Cathedral (the largest in the UK) and the modernist Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King with its glorious stained glass windows. It’s unsurprising that when RIBA was looking to open a new national architecture centre, it chose the waterfront. As well as offices there are exhibitions open to the public, and architectural tours running through different themes of the city. MUSEUMS The Museum of Liverpool impresses with its landmark waterfront location and unique exhibitions. Inside, visitors can explore how Liverpool’s port, its culture and its people have shaped the city. Also currently showing is Double Fantasy: John and Yoko, which tells the story of their relationship in their own words, and using many items which Yoko Ono has allowed to be seen for the first time. Just along the waterfront at the Royal Albert Dock Liverpool, there is the Merseyside Maritime Museum, where you can find out all about the people, ships and the companies connected to this port city. Housed in the same building is the International Slavery Museum, which gives an unflinching account of the slave trade and the city’s role within it. VISITLIVERPOOL.COM
