OUR TEAM had a reasonable
season – four victories out of eight
matches played. Considering that,
as the bottom team in the age
group, we were changing our side
each week according to illness and
injuries in those teams above us.
Our first match against SACS was a
well fought 24-24 draw but overall,
we probably let this game slip. A
tough match against Boland
Landbou followed; after being down
4-28 despite good play by James
Mason and Jody Whittaker, we
made a commendable comeback
but still lost 17-28 – with Whittaker
and Solomzi Tshiki both scoring
– the latter a great breakaway try.
Our first win came in a 10-man
game against Wynberg (34-29) with
tries scored by Luke Bruchhauser
(2), Nic Claassen (2) and Tshiki;
following this was a heavy away
defeat against Paarl (0-43). Our
remaining matches were a
triumphant return match against
SACS (12-10) and a return 10-man
game against Wynberg –
unfortunately this time a 14-28 loss.
Our season ended with a
wonderful highlight against
Rondebosch – we had been unable
to honour the first fixture due to
virtually no available players; in a
very hard-fought battle where the
boys played with tremendous gusto
and pride, the team snatched a last
minute 7-5 win due to a spectacular
try (and conversion) by Mpofana
Skwatsha who had just joined
the team – and rugby – a few
practices previously.
Our practices were well attended
and the boys were coached with
efficiency by School House stooge
Aphiwe Qaba and Rob Lee, both
senior UCT students whose efforts
the team fully appreciated.
