reports on Bishops Old Boys who
are making their mark on rugby
around the world in 2018
RUGBY SELDOM ENDS for
Bishops boys when they
finish school.
Happily we can report that
three ODs represented South
Africa in the 2017 year-end tour
to Britain: Dillyn Leyds (2010S),
Nizaam Carr (2009M), and
Francois Louw (2003W). Dillyn
went on to captain the Western
Province 2018 Currie Cup side,
Nizaam signed for Wasps in the
UK, and Francois has again
represented the Springboks
against England and in the
Rugby Championship in 2018.
James Murphy (2013F) had the
honour of representing the
Blitzbokke at the prestigious
Hong Kong Seven’s Tournament;
Dasch Barber (2006M) continues
to play for Germany; and George
Spencer (2017F) represented
Scotland Under 19.
Speedster Keenan Jacobs
(2014W) applied his sevens skills
in America; so too did Mathew
Turner (2006W) who played 15’s
The OD side turned out in pink shorts in celebration of Women’s Day when they took
on an Old Andreans side at the Piley Rees, winning 21-7.
for the Seattle Seawolves; while
Nick Koster (2007F) put his body
on the line (as captain of the side)
to help Cambridge secure a win
in the 2017 derby over Oxford.
And Nick Fenton-Wells (2004F)
captains the Bristol Bears.
At club level Graham Knoop
(2005O) led False Bay to a
memorable win in the 2017
South African Club competition
– the Gold Cup. Ghaalieb Kenny
(2017F) is the captain of the
Maties Junior Victorians.
Christian Stehlik (2016F) made
his debut for the UCT First XV.
Even coaches abound: Robbie
Fleck (1993O) coaches the
Stormers, while John Dobson
(1985K), who coached Western
Province to a 2017 Currie Cup
victory, continues as the head
coach of the Currie Cup side.
Gareth Hayden (2000K), Wesley
Chetty (2006O) and Tim Swiel
(2011F) all coached the Bishops
