Culture GETTING THE PROCESS RIGHT By Chris Ekron CULTURE, HUMILITY, RESPECT, perseverance are often buzzwords thrown around in the change rooms among many sporting teams, but very few really know how to implement these concepts or what they really mean. After several discussions amongst the coaches, we realized that the idea of, or what it means to be, a Bishops 1st XV rugby player needed some improvement. We needed to answer the question, what does it actually mean to put that blue jersey on? The 1st XV squad needed to understand that if they were to wear the blues, it would come with a responsibility; and if they were to be successful, they needed to create a ‘culture’. They had to ‘Get the process right’. What this all meant in practice was simple: if you can’t get your academics up to scratch, if you can’t get your discipline right, if you can’t be an inspiration and role model to the younger lads, then what gives you the right to wear that blue jersey? If you can’t get it right off the field, you won’t get it right on the field! The message from the coaches was clear, “Get Bishops rugby to the standards that it should be!” Goals are part of any team’s preparation before a season starts, but what exactly does it mean to run onto the hallowed Above: At the beginning of the 2018 season the 1st XV committed to AUL – Attitude, Unity and Legacy. The team came up with the theme “AUL” and it would often be heard amongst them when training got tough or when they were defending their line. AUL – Attitude, Unity, and Legacy. A – Attitude: Have no excuses; take ownership of practice time and your own mistakes; positive encouragement; correct pregame mindset. U – Unity: Brotherhood; vibe; trust in your teammates. L – Legacy: Wherever we go we leave a legacy; enjoyment and humility on and off the field; being role models; never giving up in any situation; respect for your coaches, teammates, practice time, school time and the value of the jersey. It is evident that teams don’t always “Get the process right”, however, this group under the leadership of Wesley Chetty has started that process and the coaches are confident that the culture and what it means to be part of the Bishops 1st XV has been set and the jersey will be left in a place where the next generation will not only aspire to play for the Bishops 1st XV, but also live up to the standards and expectations that have been set to wear that blue jersey. 62
