Opinion ADAS 16 ADAS becoming more and more significant in our driving lives Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are a comprehensive range of systems to help a driver. It is an unfortunate fact that most road accidents can be traced back to human error. ADAS systems have been developed to help the driver in a variety of ways, but with the sole aim of reducing road fatalities by minimising human error. Cars have developed and evolved at such a rate, that only a few years ago, it would be unthinkable that a small family car would have rain sensing windscreen wipers or automatic headlights, that privilege being left to the high end Mercedes or BMW ranges. Safety features are designed to avoid collisions and accidents through technologies that alert a driver: There are also adaptive features available such as automated lights, adaptive cruise control and pedestrian crash avoidance mitigation. There is a wide variety of ADAS: Some are already built into cars and others are available by way of addon packages. There are also aftermarket solutions available. ADAS relies on information gathered from multiple data sources, LIDAR and radar being a couple of examples. In addition, information can be gathered via other sources which are separate from the from the primary vehicle platform. This can either be from other vehicles or vehicle to infrastructure (mobile telephony or Wi-Fi data network) systems. ADAS systems are by far one of the fastest growing automotive segments, with steadily increasing quality standards. ISO 26262 is the international standard for functional safety of electric and/or electric systems in production automobiles, developing technology standards for image sensor quality and communications protocols. The next generation ADAS will increasingly use wireless network connectivity by utilising car-to car and car-to-infrastructure data. Fuelled by regulatory and consumer interest in safety applications that protect drivers and reduce accidents, the role of ADAS will only continue to grow and become more and more significant in our driving lives. It’s worth noting that in 1973 a telephone call was made via a mobile phone for the very first time. While it was cumbersome and heavy it paved the way for a whole new way of life for portable communications. Today, we all pretty much rely on our mobile phones to organise our lives through social and professional channels. Some may be surprised to learn that ADAS systems have been around since the late 60s and the Citroen DS. In 1969, the third generation model included directional headlights. Citroen re-designed the light clusters, enabling the car maker to place two headlights in each cluster, with the inner set swivelling with the steering wheel. These were attached via a cable and allowed the on board high beam to swivel by up to 80° as the driver turned the steering wheel, directing the beam in the direction of travel.
