vehicle is in the coverage zone, the system issues
both visual and audible warnings.
To minimize false alerts, the system operates
in two modes: highway speed, which filters out
stationary objects, and at speeds of less than 20
mph, which narrows the coverage range and no
longer filters stationary objects.
Bendix’ Intellipark electronic parking brake
control system is currently in fleet trials and is
expected to launch sometime in 2019.
Intellipark is designed to help prevent rollaway
and runaway crashes by automatically
setting the brakes if the driver exits the vehicle
while it is not parked. Bendix officials cited a
survey that showed that in any given year about
60 percent of fleets experience at least one such
incident.
The system detects if the driver has exited the
vehicle — is the vehicle stopped? Is there no foot
on the brake? Has the seatbelt been undone? Has
the door been opened? If these occur but the parking
brake is not set, the system will set it.
The system will then allow the parking
brake to be released when the sensors indicate
that an authorized driver is in full control of
the vehicle.
Intellipark also has a function called Trailer
Auto-Park Release. If the driver starts off with
the trailer brake still engaged, the system will
issue a warning. If the driver continues to drive,
the system will release the brake on its own, reducing
the chance for trailer tire flat-spotting,

The system features an improved interface
that eases the effort of setting the parking brake,
replacing the traditional red and yellow push/
pull knobs — and the “stinging” sensation that
came with using them — with switches. The
switches still have the familiar red and yellow
symbols, and the interface features LED lights,
making it easier to see the status of the parking
brakes on both the tractor and the trailer.
Looking ahead, the next step will be to integrate
Intellipark with the new highway departure
system so that if a driver has a medical
emergency or is otherwise incapacitated, the
truck will be able to pull over, stop and put itself
in park.
The Intellipark system is electro-mechanical,
making it easy to integrate with other systems.
Similarly, the upgrades to Wingman Fusion and
BlindSpotter are through improved software
rather than a hardware change, making them
easily attainable by current system users.
“This upgrade is an ideal reflection of the
Bendix approach to these technologies, which
envisions each step as a foundation for the
next,” Andersky said.
He added while these systems allow the
truck to perform more functions, “These are
driver-assist technologies, not driver-replace
technologies.” And while autonomous trucks
are somewhere over the horizon, for the foreseeable
future “safe driving practices and comprehensive
driver training are still the most important
safety features out there.”

Averitt Express launches on-the-job diesel
mechanic program for vets, family members

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. — Averitt Express,
a Tennessee-based transportation company,
has always supported military veterans as they
transition to civilian careers and now, the company
says it will begin a new on-the-job training
(OJT) diesel mechanic program for veterans
and family members with Post 9/11 GI Bill
benefits.
This OJT program is part of Averitt’s commitment
to hiring 1,200 additional veterans by
2020, adding to the hundreds of veterans the
company currently employs, according to Laura
Wettack, personnel manager for Averitt.

leaders, maintenance coordinators and experienced
technicians on everything from basic computer
skills to assisting with in-depth repair on
tractor-trailers.
The program offers paid clock hours, raises
based on experience level and an option for a
four-day work week.
Eligible applicants must qualify for Post 9/11
GI Bill benefits.
As part of the OJT program, these individuals
will receive a full 12 months of on-the-job training
and are eligible to earn up to $1,140 per month
tax free through the GI Bill in addition to weekly
Averitt pay. Benefit checks are paid directly from
the Department of Veteran Affairs, typically four
to six weeks after training begins. Averitt pay for
the OJT program starts at $10.75 per hour and
eventually hits $18.30 per hour at month 11 and
$21.50 per hour after month 12.
