math review of whole numbers, fractions, and decimals is also<br />

included. Students will learn techniques and processes to weld<br />

carbon steel in the flat, horizontal and vertical positions and will<br />

be able to fabricate a weldment from a blueprint to industry<br />

standards. Earning a 10-hour OSHA card is also included.<br />

Students will complete an AWS groove weld qualification test at<br />

4-Week Class B Commercial Driver’s License<br />

(CDL)<br />

The four-week Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training<br />

program is a self-paced program so you progress through the<br />

program as you master the content. This program will teach you<br />

how to operate trucks that require a Class B CDL license, such as<br />

concrete mixer trucks, snow plows, garbage trucks, and buses.<br />

You will develop skills in backing, turning, and safe driving on<br />

both rural and suburban roads and become proficient in vehicle<br />

inspections. Your training will include individual and classroom<br />

instruction and hands-on driving using simulators and fullsize<br />

dump trucks. Upon completion, you will take your vehicle<br />

inspections, DOT skills, and driving tests at <strong>Hawkeye</strong> to obtain<br />

your Class B CDL. Tuition pays for books and training and does<br />

not include a DOT drug test ($50-$100), CDL permit ($12), and<br />

DOT physical ($80-$150).<br />

6-Week Accelerated Class A Commercial<br />

Driver’s License (CDL)<br />

Looking to start a career in one of the fastest growing<br />

occupations? <strong>Hawkeye</strong>’s six-week accelerated Class A<br />

Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training program is designed<br />

for adults who would like to train for a high-demand career in<br />

a short-term time frame. The program focuses on developing<br />

safe driving skills including backing, turning, and driving on<br />

rural and suburban roads. You will receive hands-on training<br />

using full-size semitrailers and virtual driving simulators. Upon<br />

completion, you will take your vehicle inspection, DOT skills,<br />

and driving tests at <strong>Hawkeye</strong> to obtain your Class A CDL. You<br />

receive individual training daily on your schedule, choose<br />

your times: morning 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., afternoon 1:00<br />

p.m. to 5:00 p.m. or evening 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Graduates<br />

can find employment in a variety of areas including, but not<br />

limited to a truck driver, spotter, shag driver, and many more.<br />

Per FMCSA rules students are required to complete and pass<br />

a Department of Transportation (DOT) long form physical<br />

and pre-employment drug screening before start of the class.<br />

Arrowhead Medical Center is <strong>Hawkeye</strong>’s approved vendor for<br />

the DOT pre-employment drug screening and may be used for<br />

the DOT physical as well. Tuition pays for books and training<br />

and does not include a DOT drug test ($50-$100), DOT physical<br />

Advanced Driving Training (Skid Monster)<br />

By the time you leave this class you will have improved your<br />

driving abilities and have a greater understanding of vehicle<br />

handling and gain the experience to prevent, detect, and<br />

correct loss of vehicle traction. Even veteran drivers find this<br />

defensive driving course will give them the skills to handle a<br />

vehicle in adverse conditions like hydroplaning or hitting a<br />

patch of black ice. You will gain the skills to drive in all types of<br />

road conditions using the Skid Monster, a specially equipped<br />

vehicle that simulates adverse highway driving conditions at<br />

speeds up to 60 mph. Law enforcement and other public safety<br />

personnel use the same simulators in car handling trainings.<br />

Note: You must have a valid driver’s license. If under 18 years of<br />

age you must have a parent or guardian sign a waiver.<br />

<strong>Hawkeye</strong>’s Driver <strong>Education</strong> Program is designed to help<br />

beginner drivers develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes<br />

necessary to become safe, responsible drivers. We provide 30<br />

hours of classroom instruction and six hours of behind-thewheel<br />

instruction. This program meets the requirement of<br />

the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) Motor Vehicles<br />

Division (DMV) for teenagers to obtain the graduated driver’s<br />

license (GDL). Students are not required to have any driving<br />

practice before coming to class. However, students will be<br />

required to be proficient in their driving at the end of our course<br />

or they will be requested to drive with the DOT to get their<br />

license. Attendance is required for ALL sessions. No exceptions.<br />

Gain the understanding and skills to become a safe and<br />

responsible moped driver in just six hours of classroom<br />

instruction. Classroom instruction includes operator and moped<br />

preparation, basic control skills, safe riding practices, how to<br />

handle complex situations, and moped care. This course does<br />

not include hands-on moped instruction. This course meets<br />

Iowa Department of Transportation requirements to obtain a<br />

moped license at 14. All students must be at least 13-1/2 years<br />

Motorcycle: 3-Wheel Basic Rider Course<br />

If you are a new rider and you want to learn how to ride a<br />

3-wheel motorcycle, this course is for you! Participate in four<br />

hours of classroom activities and eight hours of on-cycle<br />

riding exercises. You must pass a knowledge and skills test for<br />

successful completion. Participants must provide their own<br />

3-wheeler. If under age of 18, registrations are done in person at<br />

<strong>Hawkeye</strong>’s Cedar Falls Center.<br />

Motorcycle: Basic Rider Course<br />

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) Basic Rider Course is a<br />

learn-to-ride education and training safety program that consists<br />

of the online MSF Basic eCourse to address basic motorcycle<br />

knowledge, five hours of classroom instruction with a RiderCoach<br />

to address rider perception and risk management, and 10 hours<br />

of on-cycle, hands-on instruction. Motorcycles are provided for<br />

use during the course. Prior to the first day of class you will need<br />

to read the Rider Handbook and complete the eCourse online.<br />

Price of the eCourse is included and student will receive an email<br />

two weeks before the class start date with a redemption code.<br />

Riders must be able to balance a bicycle to participate in the<br />

riding portion of the course and successfully complete a riding<br />

skills test. This course does have a written and a riding skills test.<br />

Successful completion of BOTH tests is required to receive a DOT<br />

certificate of completion. A course completion card may provide<br />

an insurance discount. This course is required by Iowa law to<br />

obtain a motorcycle operator’s license for all residents under the<br />

age of 18. If you are a minor, you must have a valid driver’s permit<br />

and you must have written consent from your parent or guardian<br />

at time of registration. If under age of 18, registrations are done in<br />

person at <strong>Hawkeye</strong>’s Cedar Falls Center.<br />

Motorcycle: Returning Rider Course<br />

Refresh your riding skills in one day with this course that<br />

combines the elements of the Basic Rider Course. This program<br />

consists of the online MSF Basic eCourse to address basic<br />

motorcycle knowledge and hands-on instruction. Prior to<br />

class, you’ll need to complete the e-Course online and print a<br />

completion certificate. Bring your certificate, full-finger gloves,<br />

long-sleeve shirt or jacket, long pants, and sturdy over-the-ankle<br />

footwear to class. Helmets and eye protection must be worn<br />

and will be provided if you don’t bring your own. You can’t ride<br />

without this equipment. Riders must be able to balance a bicycle<br />

to participate in the riding portion. If you possess basic skills but<br />

haven’t ridden for a while, this course is for you. A knowledge<br />

and skills test is included and may allow you to receive your<br />

motorcycle license without having to drive at the Department<br />

of Motor Vehicles. Motorcycles are provided, however, personal<br />

motorcycles may be used if they meet requirements. All<br />

registration is done in person at the Cedar Falls Center.<br />

Snowmobile Safety Class<br />

Learn useful and practical information on Iowa laws governing<br />

the use of snowmobiles in Iowa. You will learn basic snowmobile<br />

operation and safety. The course uses the ISSA Snowmobile<br />

Simulator, an interactive simulator, which reinforces the<br />

correct riding positions, gives you a ‘feel’ for what will be<br />

experienced on a snowmobile, and allows you to experience<br />

real riding scenarios. This is a fun and informative introduction<br />

to snowmobiling and is perfect for youth and adults that are<br />

new to snowmobiling. Youth ages 12 to 17 riding on state<br />

snowmobile trails or public areas, including ice on rivers or<br />

lakes are required to carry a certificate indicating that they<br />

have completed the Iowa Youth Snowmobile Safety Training<br />

class provided by the Iowa DNR and Iowa State Snowmobile<br />

Association when they are riding. Upon completion you will<br />

receive a state certification of achievement, and a card to be<br />

carried while operating a snowmobile on state trails and public<br />

areas.<br />

Certified Medication Aide<br />

Fulfills requirements for individuals to administer non-parenteral<br />

medication in long-term care and RCF facilities (15 beds and<br />

larger). A 10-20 hour practicum will be completed in a facility<br />

of student’s employment under the direction of a registered<br />

nurse within six months of beginning class. Must meet State<br />

of Iowa prerequisites, including: If employed in a certified<br />

nursing facility, must be employed for at least six months by the<br />

facility, must be eligible on the Iowa Nurse Aide Registry, and<br />

facility administrator must recommend student for the course.<br />

This intesive AAPC course will teach principles of medical<br />

coding related to the three main code books: CPT, ICD-10-CM<br />

Code Set and HCPCS Level II. This course is for anyone who is<br />

preparing for a career in medical coding for a physician’s office.<br />

A foundation in medical terminology and anatomy will be<br />

taught online with modules that are 40 hours each. Access to<br />

online modules will be given January 28, 2019. Eighty hours of<br />

classroom instruction will be provided on coding by a certified<br />

AAPC instructor. Classroom sessions begin March 4, 2019. Books,<br />

AAPC student membership, the CPC Certification Exam, and an<br />

comprised of 600 medical records to be coded, which allows an<br />

hygienists, and dental assistants) via table clinic format.<br />

A career in bookkeeping allows you to work in many different<br />

kinds of businesses and industries. This certificate course<br />

includes both theory and hands-on application and includes the<br />

following courses: Bookkeeping Level 1 & 2, Understanding &<br />

Preparing Financial Statements, QuickBooks Level 1, QuickBooks<br />

Level 2, and a Bookkeeping Practicum. Students will have the<br />

opportunity to put theory into practice, both in manual and<br />

Register through <strong>Hawkeye</strong> Business and <strong>Community</strong> <strong>Education</strong> prior to<br />

class start. Payment is required at the time of registration.<br />

Enrollment<br />

Classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. You are officially enrolled<br />

once we receive your completed registration form and payment. Please<br />

Children are not allowed in class, unless noted in the class description or<br />

the class is designed for children (ex. kid’s camp).<br />

Applying Credits to a Technical Program at <strong>Hawkeye</strong><br />

If it is determined that the course(s) taken are similar in course content<br />

to a required course in one of <strong>Hawkeye</strong>’s technical programs, a copy of<br />

English Language instruction assists individuals of limited<br />

English proficiency achieve competence in the English language.<br />

Students are required to register and take an entry assessment<br />

to determine the appropriate class level. ELL classes are available<br />

in seven different levels. Classes meet at the Van G. Miller Adult<br />

Learning Center, 120 Jefferson Street, Waterloo.<br />

Punctual and regular attendance is absolutely necessary for<br />

FAMILY LITERACY – FREE<br />

Parents enrolled in <strong>Hawkeye</strong>’s High School Completion<br />

Program or English Language Learning Program with a child 18<br />

or younger living at home may register for the Family Literacy<br />

Program (FLP). The FLP provides programming for parents<br />

who seek to strengthen their role as their child’s first teacher<br />

as well as free children’s books and materials. The program<br />

also provides one-on-one assistance to parents interested in<br />

transferring to college credit coursework. Call 319-296-4278<br />

for more information.<br />

The High School Completion Program is free and offers<br />

standards-based instruction to prepare students for successful<br />

completion of HiSET tests and to improve their basic skills in<br />

reading, writing, and mathematics. In addition, digital literacy,<br />

financial literacy, and transition to college assistance are<br />

components of the program. Punctual and regular attendance is<br />

necessary for success.<br />

The Van G Miller Adult Learning Center, located at 120 Jefferson<br />

Street Waterloo, opens January 2019. It is located at the corner of<br />

Highway 63 and Jefferson Street.<br />

REFUND REQUESTS<br />

Tuition must be paid two business days before the first class session.<br />

If you register, have paid the course fee, and are unable to attend,<br />

you must notify <strong>Hawkeye</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong> two business days<br />

prior to the first class session to receive a full refund. This policy also<br />

pertains to third party billing.<br />

BOOKS<br />

<strong>Hawkeye</strong> Bookstore operates on campus in <strong>Hawkeye</strong> Center.<br />

Students will be provided an opportunity to purchase books the<br />

first night of class. Books will be available at course location. Price<br />

printed does NOT include tax. Prices are subject to change.<br />

CLASS CANCELLATIONS<br />

Courses and workshops are subject to cancellation if the minimum<br />

enrollment is not attained. In such cases, you will receive a full<br />

refund, and you will be notified by email or phone. Avoid showing<br />

up for a cancelled class by preregistering.<br />

BAD WEATHER CANCELLATIONS<br />

In the event of cancellation for bad weather, announcements will<br />

be made over participating local radio stations: KXEL, KWLO, KFMW,<br />

KCNZ, WMT, KWAY, KOEL, KNWS, KBBG, KZIA, KFJB, KCVM, KCRR,<br />

KKHQ, and KXIA.<br />

Announcements are also made over the following television stations:<br />

KWWL, KGAN, and KCRG. Evening classes will be cancelled on days<br />

that day classes are cancelled due to bad weather. When in doubt, call<br />

319-296-4444.<br />
