Honoring Veterans
The Hilltop Historical Society and the Don Gentile American
Legion Post 532 held its fourth annual Veterans Honor
Program presentation on Nov. 4. Here, Dave Dobos, (left)
president of the Hilltop Historical Society, lets their honoree
LTC (Ret.) Richard Hoffman hold the Hilltop Historical
Society Plaque with his name on it. Hoffman is a Vietnam
veteran. Robert Hartman, a Korean War veteran, is the honoree
of the Don Gentile American Legion Post 532 and is
holding its plaque which was presented by Post
Commander Bernie Brogan (far right). Both honorees
Remembering e Great Flood
ProMusica and Opera Columbus Performed “The Great Flood of 1913” at LifeCare Alliance’s Carrie’s Cafe
on Nov. 7. The performance told a story of connection through loss and tragedy, centered around the devastation
of Columbus’ Franklinton neighborhood in the Great Flood of 1913. Many older adults were on
hand for this sneak peek of the commissioned performance. Here, vocalist Chelsea Hart Melcher performs
for the crowd. The Great Flood was a transformative event in the history of Columbus and Ohio. A 1913
superstorm caused the largest flood in 100 years, sending water into communities in central and western
Ohio, killing hundreds and leaving thousands homeless. In Columbus, the Scioto River flooded
Franklinton with waters up to 17 feet, killing 96 people, injuring hundreds, and destroying more than 500
buildings.
Affordable housing a growing concern
The affordable housing crisis is at the heart of the
American economy and impossible to ignore.
Affordable housing has become an increasingly
serious concern as the housing market tightens with
population growth and rents rise to take advantage of
the increasing demand. American cities have become
unaffordable to those whose incomes are not keeping
pace with current housing costs. Whether you’re a
renter or a homeowner, affordable housing is a fundamental
human need for any adult or family to survive
and thrive.
Franklin County’s senior population has needs for
both affordable and accessible housing with services.
Americans 65 to 74 are now the country’s fastest-growing
age group. According to a 2014 AARP survey, 88
percent of older adults want to remain in place as they
age. Our seniors are facing costly housing challenges
that include: home repairs/modifications, neighborhood
re-gentrification, impaired mobility, relocation of
community retail stores and personal safety concerns.
Senior subsidized housing waiting lists are often long
and homelessness is an increasing problem among
older adults.
The Franklin County Office on Aging, in conjunction
with the Franklin County Board of
Commissioners, recognizes the importance of residential
stability and service enriched housing for seniors.
We invite you to join us for a Strategic Conversation to
assist us with developing strategies to address the
Senior Housing Crisis on Nov. 30 from 9-10:30 a.m. at
Memorial Hall, 280 E. Broad St., Columbus, OH
