Embracing
Differences
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
Like many children his age, Jaiden
Gray is just looking to make a connection.
He tries to strike up conversations about
popular subjects, is always willing to
share his beloved Legos, and generally
loves sharing in the company of his peers.
The only problem is they sometimes don’t
know how to act or react when he works
up the courage to make an attempt.
“They see him as different due to his
mannerisms and that can often lead
them to being fearful, isolating, aggressive
or just plain cruel,” said his grandmother
and guardian Tamera Bang.
Their reaction, she said, is something
they have been dealing with for most of
his life and she is tired of it happening.
“It’s completely heartbreaking,” she
said. “It’s just absolutely devastating to
see his typically developing peers treat
him and others this way because of their
outward appearance or how they behave.
“Something has to change.”
The breaking point for the special
needs teacher’s aide came during a recent
trip to a local park on the Westside when
Jaiden walked up to a group of boys
around his age to talk about the popular
game Fortnite.
“He’s obsessed with that game so his
interest was piqued when he overheard
them talking about it,” she said.
Recalling the lessons he learned in
school and in therapy upon his diagnosis
of autism spectrum disorder, Jaiden took
the chance to possibly form a new connection
about their shared interest.
It was an experience that got progressively
worse.
“At first, they barely acknowledged his
presence and Jaiden looked to me for support,”
Bang said. “I made a gesture of
encouragement because I know how
much it took for him to go up and speak
Jaiden Gray (shown here) and his family work to change the way younger children
interact with their peers who have special needs.
to new people and then they started calling
him names.”
Like some children with autism,
Jaiden often has a hard time differentiating
between when someone is joking with
him and when someone is being mean.
And so he did what he normally does
when he sees people laughing and smiling
— he laughed and smiled along too.
“He didn’t realize what was happening
until his younger brother Jace got upset
on his behalf and started telling the boys
to be nicer,” said Bang. “Then it dawned
on him what had happened and he got
really upset too.”
When the trio returned home, Bang
started recalling similar moments in his
life. There was the time when he was at
school and called the “R” word after he
had a meltdown about indoor recess (he
dislikes the rain and noisy environments).
There was the time he was made fun of
after an epileptic incident in the classroom.
There was the time he was teased
for separating toys into designs and patterns
that made sense only to him. And
there was the time when he invited his
entire class to his home for a birthday
party and only one person showed up.
“It can be so exhausting,” Bang said.
“He’s such a bright, funny, creative kid
with so much to offer this world and I just
want others to see him the way that I do.
I just want them to give him and others
like him a chance to show that just
Water rates
debated in Prairie
By Amanda Ensinger
Staff Writer
At a recent meeting, the Prairie
Township trustees discussed the possibility
of reducing water rates for residents.
According to township officials, a study
is being conducted to see what the cost
would be for Columbus to take over
Franklin County sewer and water services.
“The city, county and township are looking
at doing a study to see what the various
options are cost-wise for water and
sewer in the area and how it will be managed,”
said Tracy Hatmaker, township
administrator. “The city and county are in
talks to potentially take over the county’s
system.”
However, according to Hatmaker, no
decision on this will be made until the
because they have differences doesn’t mean
they are completely different.”
To try to change the way younger children
interact with their peers who have
special needs, Bang has been brainstorming
methods parents and schools can
employ to make sure they are accepting of
others rather than fearful or isolating.
“I think they should try to use the
Sesame Street model,” she said. “They
recently introduced Julia, a character who
has autism, and her fellow peers have done
At the school level, Bang said it wouldn’t
hurt to have individualized programs that
discourages the bullying of others.
In the district where Jaiden is a student,
they do put an emphasis on anti-bullying
and inclusion, says Sandy Nekoloff, the
executive director of communications for
the South-Western City Schools District.
She explained that at the elementary
school level, they follow the seven virtues
based on the basic school research of Dr.
Ernest Boyer which emphasizes honesty,
respect, responsibility, compassion, selfdiscipline,
perseverance and giving.
She also added that they employ the
responsive classroom which empowers educators
to create safe, joyful and engaging
learning communities where all students
have a sense of belonging. Nekoloff further
explained that each school has its own specialized
program to bring children of all
development abilities together and are
always willing to look into doing more.
As for the parental education aspect,
Nekoloff said they often work with the
study is complete. The study is looking at
the overall Franklin County sewer and
water system, the improvements that need
to be made and the amount of people who
currently use the system.
“They also will look at what our rates
should be to make it most economical for
them given the number of households we
have in the township,” Hatmaker said.
Township residents receive their water
and sewer service through Franklin
County and have complained about their
bills being double what neighboring communities
pay.
“The water bills in Prairie Township are
more than double what they are for the
same home with the same water usage in
Columbus,” said John Griffith, a landlord
in Prairie Township. “People live on fixed
incomes in this community and a $400 or
$500 water bill is devastating for them.”
In the spring, Franklin County had a
public meeting where officials explained to
residents why their water was so high and
what they are planning to do about it.
Franklin County Sanitary Engineer’s
Director Stephen Renner said the reason
for the increases is due to the aging water
and sewer system, how spread out the
service areas are and the fleet of service
trucks that have to service these areas on
any given day.
Officials added that the county has only
www.columbusmessenger.com
Parent Teacher Association to offer antibullying
research, resources and programs
such as Box Out Bullying.
Relatedly, Dr. Charlies Albright, a psychology
faculty member at the Nationwide
Children’s Hospital Child Development
Center suggested that parents speak to
their children about the physical or behavioral
differences of their peers so they do
not have a fear or distrust of mannerism
that may come across as atypical.
“It is important that parents teach their
children that these differences do not mean
that children with autism are not smart,
that they cannot be your friends, or that
they cannot have fun with you,” he wrote in
an email. “Everyone is different. Everyone
has areas where they excel and areas
where they have challenges. It is important
to help children learn to have respect for all
of their peers and empathy for those who
have challenges.”
“If children learn to recognize and have
compassion for the differences of others,”
he added, “they can learn that children
with autism have as many similarities to
them as they have differences.”
increased the water bills slightly the past
few years to try to reduce customer expenses.
However, in reality they should have
been increasing the water rates by a lot
more to maintain the aging system that is
in need of repairs.
“In order for us to pay for the infrastructure
needs over the next decade, we would
need to increase the rates by 15 to 20 percent
every year,” said Erik Janas, deputy
county administrator for Franklin County.
“We have held rates over the last three
years and have kept increases consistent
with Columbus, which is 2 to 3 percent.
This has resulted in us falling further
behind.”
Janas added that the commissioners
have agreed to fund $2.5 million a year
over four to five years, which equals to
approximately $15 million for continued
maintenance of the system.
The township is part of a committee
that is looking at bringing Columbus water
to Prairie Township. The attorney for the
township is participating in these meetings
on the township’s behalf.
“We are moving along, but it is going to
be a lengthy process,” said Stephen
Kennedy, township trustee. “We hope to
have something finalized in a two-year
time frame, but right now there are no
hookups yet.”

Magic Key
Story Hour
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
When the Magic Key Story Hour was
first introduced to the community nearly
two decades ago, members of the Westland
High School Key Club who were tasked
with leading the program were unsure as
it how it would be received.
“It was very much a pilot program,” said
Jim Hamm, a former advisor at the school
and a long-standing member of the local
Kiwanis Clubs. “We had no idea if children
would show up for it, had no idea if they
would want to come back, and we really
had no clue if it would still be around in
the future.”
But a remarkable thing occurred, he
said, as the community became more
aware of what the program was and the
mission behind it.
“They came, they kept coming and this
award-winning project is still around,” he
said.
For a limited time each year, current
members of the school’s Key Club meet at
the Westland Area Library to set up stations
for children throughout the community.
“They come in early on a Saturday, pick
up a bunch of crafts and supplies and
books, prepare one of the meeting rooms
and take it from there,” said Jessica
Williams, a youth services associate.
The first date of this year’s Magic Key
Story Hour program took place on Nov. 3
with a new crop of students at the helm.
“Most of our Key Club students leading
the story hour have not participated (in
Magic Key Story Hour) before, so we’ll see
how it goes,” said advisor Brad Kramer
shortly before the event kicked-off.
When the program started around 1
p.m., curious children started peeking
around the door frame, eyes and faces
lighting up when they saw tables full of
construction paper, stickers, glitter, glue
and pre-cut patterns to make holiday
crafts.
“It’s fantastic,” said 8-year-old Jai Sin.
the first Saturday of each month through March from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Westland Area
eagerly anticipating this day.
“I’ve been looking forward to being
involved in this program for a long time,”
said freshman Mercedes Schultz. “I had
heard so many great things about this program
before coming to the school and I
couldn’t wait to sign up.”
At first, the students provided assistance
to the handful of children as they
made crafts, then led them in a game of
pin-the-feathers on the turkey. Though the
children seemed more interested in going
back to the craft station afterwards, they
did manage to make it to the rug for story
time.
“Sometimes we have to adapt to what
the children want,” said Kramer. “We
always try to have the students read more
books during story hour but sometimes it’s
hard to pull the kids, both the children
here and our students, away from the craft
stations.”
took a slight detour from her regular
Saturday afternoon date at the library
with son Jai when she saw the sign posted
for the Magic Key Story Hour near the
entrance. She said at first they just wanted
to see what was going on, but decided to
stay when they saw so many people having
fun.
“I think it’s just wonderful that you
have these high school students volunteering
their time to help little kids make
crafts and read to them,” she said. “It
seems to be a fantastic program and I
would definitely bring him back for their
next event.”
The Magic Key Story Hour will take
place from 1 to 2 p.m. on the first Saturday
of each month through March. Schultz said
children should expect more holiday
themed crafts and related games and
superstorm caused the largest flood in 100 years, sending water into communities in central and western
Ohio, killing hundreds and leaving thousands homeless. In Columbus, the Scioto River flooded
Franklinton with waters up to 17 feet, killing 96 people, injuring hundreds, and destroying more than 500
buildings.
Affordable housing a growing concern
The affordable housing crisis is at the heart of the
American economy and impossible to ignore.
Affordable housing has become an increasingly
serious concern as the housing market tightens with
population growth and rents rise to take advantage of
the increasing demand. American cities have become
unaffordable to those whose incomes are not keeping
pace with current housing costs. Whether you’re a
renter or a homeowner, affordable housing is a fundamental
human need for any adult or family to survive
and thrive.
Franklin County’s senior population has needs for
both affordable and accessible housing with services.
Americans 65 to 74 are now the country’s fastest-growing
age group. According to a 2014 AARP survey, 88
percent of older adults want to remain in place as they
age. Our seniors are facing costly housing challenges
that include: home repairs/modifications, neighborhood
re-gentrification, impaired mobility, relocation of
The Franklin County Board of Commissioners and The Franklin County Office on Aging join with the Messenger Newspaper in providing this update on aging issues in Franklin County.
PREPARE FOR WINTER WEATHER — GET YOUR FLU VACCINE NOW
Despite the prediction of an average to below average winter, The Franklin
County Office on Aging issues its annual winter announcement to seniors urging
them to take preventive measures and plan early for winter weather. Learn
about the emergency plans that have been established in your area by your
state and local government and ensure your home and car are prepared for the
winter weather.
FEMA recommends you prepare an emergency supply kit, develop a family
communications plan with up to date contacts and stay informed about the risks
and weather emergencies in your community.
An emergency supply kit should include a three-day supply of food and water, a
battery-powered or hand-crank radio, extra flashlights and batteries, prescription
medicines and copies of prescriptions and adequate clothing and blankets. To
guarantee an uninterrupted supply of prescription medicines, contact your
pharmacy today and find out if they have a free home-delivery or mail order
service. If this option is available, consider subscribing or enrolling now to
ensure a continuous supply in your home.
Getting the flu vaccine soon is also another important way for you to prepare for
the winter season. People over the age of 50 are one of several groups recommended
for a seasonal flu shot. Caregivers of seniors also fall under these
general flu shot recommendations due to the possibility of spreading the virus to
the individuals they care for.
People 65 years and older have two flu shots available to choose from - a
regular dose flu vaccine and a newer flu vaccine designed for people 65 and
older with a higher dose. The high dose vaccine is associated with a stronger
immune response to vaccination. Preliminary studies suggest this may translate
into greater protection against flu disease. The CDC and its Advisory Committee
on Immunization Practices have not expressed a preference for either vaccine.
For more information on the flu vaccine, call 1-888-202-1319.
Franklin County Public Health offers these tips to further
protect you from the flu:
Wash your hands frequently.
Since your hands are the most common way to get germs into your body, you
should scrub vigorously with soap and water for 10-15 seconds to keep them as
germ-free as possible. Wash after using the bathroom, before handling food,
before eating, and any other time you think you might have picked up germs.
Avoid touching your nose, eyes and mouth.
You can't keep all the germs off your hands all the time. So, keep your hands
away from germs' most common entryways into the body.
Cover your nose and mouth with your sleeve or tissue when coughing or
sneezing.
Stop the spread your germs to others by coughing or sneezing into your sleeve
instead of your hand or into the air.
Practice other good health habits.
Get plenty of sleep, drink plenty of fluids, eat nutritious foods, manage your
stress, and be physically active.

enjoy playing with
toys. Mountain Dude
was born February
2016 and is
neutered, microchipped
and up-to-date on vaccines. He is
available for adoption through Colony Cats
Shingyee means
lucky. She is a 3-
month-old happy,
super sweet girl.
Shingyee is spayed,
microchipped and up
to date on vaccines.
Come meet her at the
Petco Lennox Town
Center where she is
residing temporarily
until a family finds
her. Those interested can also contact Colony
Cats and Dogs.
FYI: www.colonycats.org
Camo is a 1 to 2-
year-old plott hound
mix who came to
Colony Cats and
Dogs from Texas after
the hurricane. She’s
very high energy and
gets along well with
other dogs. Camo is
full of energy and
would love someone who could take her out
for daily walks. Due to her high energy, she
may not do well in a home with small children
or cats.
we belong to has
purchased the following
classifieds. Determining
the value of their service
or product is advised by
this publication. In order
to avoid misunderstandings,
some advertisers do
not offer “employment”
but rather supply the
readers with manuals, directories
and other materials
designed to help
their clients establish mail
order selling and other
businesses at home. Under
NO circumstance
should you send any
money in advance or give
the client your checking,
license ID or credit card
numbers. Also beware of
ads that claim to guarantee
loans regardless of
credit and note that if a
credit repair company
does business only over
the phone it’s illegal to request
any money before
delivering its service. All
funds are based in US
dollars. Toll Free numbers
may or may not
reach Canada. Please
check with the Better
Business Bureau 614-
486-6336 or the Ohio Attorney
General’s Consumer
Protection Section
information on the company
you are seeking to
do business with.
