The city council will
tomorrow discuss the plan
after the recommendation from
a working party led by city
councillor Sara Templeton.
It will go out for public
consultation on Friday.
The baches covered by the
licences would have to be of
heritage value
and used
for holiday
accommodation
only.

The future of the baches has
been an issue for decades.
“I think the future is looking
much brighter, especially when
you look back to the 1970s when
the cave baches were burnt
down by the council,” he said.
Mr Gilpin was hopeful the
baches would survive beyond
the 35-year licence.
“I guess the key for us is
that the 35-year term would
be renewed afterwards on a
renewable basis.”
The working group has also
recommended that baches of
moderate to high risk of natural
hazards as well as ones that
obstructed public access to the
beach were either demolished or
relocated.

Said Mr Gilpin: “There are
some baches where the risk
is probably too great and
demolition would most likely
be the outcome there. But our
belief is that is a very small
number of baches. For a large
number of baches, there are
ways of mitigating the risks.”

is that we have spent a lot of
time and money on fighting
when we could be doing other
things with the surf club and
other stuff in the area.

walking and biking tracks with
historical information and

ASBESTOS PIPE REMOVAL
The discovery of an asbestos
cement pipe in Redcliffs Park will
not impact construction of the
new Redcliffs School the Ministry
of Education says. Contractors
installing a wastewater pipe
discovered the abandoned pipe two
weeks ago and licensed workers
began removing it last week.
Ministry head of infrastructure
service Kim Shannon said the
project team were not aware of the
pipe.
CAR HITS TREE
A suspected drink-driver crashed
his car into a tree when driving
from the Hilltop Tavern towards
Barrys Bay last Friday at around
8pm. The 25-year-old failed to take
a right-hand bend. Akaroa Senior
Constable Tim Johnson said there
were no other vehicles involved
in the collision and the driver
sustained no significant injuries.
The Banks Peninsula resident will
appear in the Christchurch District
Court on December 3.
