SEVENTY descendants of
Samuel Manson, who was
known as “head of the bay”,
recently gathered at the stone
cottage in Orton Bradley
Park to celebrate their ancestor.
Samuel Manson, who
was believed to be the first
carpenter in Christchurch,
built the original cottage
in 1848. After a seven-year
restoration process following
the February 22, 2011,
earthquake, the cottage
reopened its doors to the
public in May.
Great great grandson
of Samuel, Max Manson,
presented a portrait of the
carpenter to the Orton
Bradley Park Board
chairman Simon Mortlock.
Mr Manson spoke of the
pride which the Mansons
have in the history of
pioneers in the family. That
also included Jean Manson,
who mothered 17 children.
Mr Manson also paid
tribute to his cousin Janet
O’Loughlan, who organised
the day with her niece,
Robyn Cody, printed a
booklet y and organised
displays of old photographs
and other memorabilia in the
old school house.
PRIDE: Janet Loughlan, Max Manson, Simon Martin and Robyn Cody presented of the
portrait of Samuel Manson to the Orton Bradley Park Board.
This permanent material two bedroom unit has been thoroughly and thoughtfully renovated to a high standard,
maximising its durability, flexibility and charm. The open plan dining and living room connect to a lawn and patio
area that is both sheltered and sunny - a perfect place to entertain in or relax and read a book. The well planned
landscaping has provided well defined areas with space for a spa bath, veggie garden and BBQ area if those
features tickle your fancy. The newly appointment kitchen cleverly connects to the living room allowing you to
chatter with guests or connect with the garden views whilst preparing meals. The bathroom is sumptuously tiled
and both this and the kitchen have been furnished with underfloor heating ensuring toasty toes in the winter time. A
garage with an automatic door adds to the functionality of this wee gem.
