New manager for Health Harbour plan
Fire rages, homes at risk
GOVERNORS BAY resident
Karen Banwell has been
appointed manager of the Whaka
Ora Healthy Harbour plan.
The final plan, which was
launched in March, sets out
an aspirational vision for
the harbour to restore the
ecological and cultural health of
Whakaraupō/Lyttelton Harbour
from the mountains to the sea.
Dr Banwell started in the role
this month. She will be based at
Rapaki Marae, but will also have
the opportunity to spend time
with each partner organisation.
However, her main time will be
out among the community.
Whaka Ora Healthy Harbour
governance group chairwoman
Yvette Couch-Lewis said
community involvement was
important to the five partners
– Environment Canterbury,
Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke, Te
Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, the city
council, and the Lyttelton Port
Company.
ECan zone delivery manager
Paul Hulse said Dr Banwell
would be an asset to the plan
implementation team.
“She comes with a wealth
of experience within plan
implementation and has great
connections with people in the
harbour already,” he said.
Dr Banwell has previously
worked for city council and
ECan as a senior strategy adviser,
but more recently worked as a
strategic planning advisor at
Regenerate Christchurch.
She is currently chairwoman of
the Governors Bay Community
Association, a trustee of the Avon
Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust
species laid out in the plan
by Lyttelton Primary School
students.
and recently completed a PhD
in geography on community
resilience.
Dr Banwell said she could not
wait to start her new role.
“I was sent the job description
by multiple people who said this
is written for you.”
“This job was pretty much
a culmination of my work
experience and what I love to do
and I’m committed to working
with the harbour community
for ecological and cultural
outcomes,” Dr Banwell said.
Dr Banwell’s appointment
was officially announced at
Lyttelton Primary School on
Sumner woman in new baby theatre
BABIES AND theatre are not
usually two things that are put
together.
In fact, any parent who have
taken a baby to a performance
know it can be challenging at
best and a disaster at worst.
Turning that whole idea on
its head is Sumner’s Hannah
Wheeler, Burwood’s Melanie
Luckman and Strowan’s Amy
Straker.
The three performers will
perform their show Up And
Away, which is designed
especially for pre-walking
babies in New Brighton and
Phillipstown.
The show will be staged
through the newly launched
Cubbin Theatre Company.
The company aims to develop
genuine theatre works for
children under the age of five.
Each performance will
last about 30-40min with an
opportunity for families to stay
and play at the end.
The show will also be taking
place in a carefully crafted tent.
“Our vision is of a world where
high-quality art is as integral to
early childhood as the
playground and as accessible,”
Luckman said.
She said it has been great
working with the city council’s
Enliven Places Project Fund for
this tour.
Luckman said with the
MAGICAL: Hannah Wheeler and Amy Straker performing in
their show Up and Away –which is designed especially for
pre-walking babies.
funding’s help, it could offer the
show for $5 for a baby and adult
together.
The show is informed by
neuroscientific research and has
been developed in consultation
with a speech and language
therapist through a series of
rehearsal workshops with babies.
Wheeler was working at LATT
Children’s Theatre and living in
South Korea when she saw her
first baby theatre performance.
“It was five years ago and what
I experienced has stuck with me
ever since. I am really excited
about bringing high quality,
respectful and intelligent theatre
to children in Christchurch,” she
said.
Up and Away runs Sunday,
Monday and Tuesday at The
Old School Te Kura Tawhito
on Hawke St in New Brighton
and December 6 and 7 at the
Phillipstown Hub on 39 Nursery
Rd. Bookings can be made
through eventbrite.co.nz. For
