Widow’s hope fades
• By Louis Day
ANN THORNTON’S hopes
of being buried alongside her
husband are fading following the
city council’s unchanged stance
on pre-purchasing graves.
The city council decided
against altering its Cemeteries
Bylaw and Handbook that prevents
people from pre-purchasing
graves at its meeting last week.
Mrs Thronton’s husband,
Jim, was the first to be buried in
Diamond Harbour’s eco-burial
site last November. Three of the
12 plots have been filled since the
eco-burial site opened and more
than 70 people have signalled an
interest in being buried on the
site.
In spite of fears the cemetery
would fill up, Mrs Thorton remained
optimistic.
“There was the suggestion of
a possibility for the opportunity
to revisit the issue when more
research is completed. With more
research available I am hopeful
that the council will arrive at an
informed and compassionate
solution to the issue.”
Deputy Mayor Andrew Turner
was not happy with the decision.
“The particular area where I
would be keen for us to show
more compassion would be
where when one partner has
already been buried at the green
burial plot in Diamond Harbour
and the ability to reserve a plot
for that other partner.”
made during the Cemeteries
Bylaw and Handbook review
Cr Turner said the demand
from the community was too
City councillor Mike Davidson
said there already a capacity issue
with cemeteries.
“One of the biggest issues
with pre-purchasing plots is that
everyone is taking them and then
we have got these cemeteries
with lots of vacant plots in there
that have been pre-purchased for
decades.”
DOG RESTRICTIONS
The Banks Peninsula Community
Board has requested city council
staff to enforce dog restrictions on
Akaroa Beach. Dogs prohibited
from the beach between 9am and
7pm. Board member Janis Haley
said there was nothing worse than
big dogs disrupting children on
the beach. Akaroa used to have a
dog ranger and Ms Haley hoped
the council could reinstate one
to stop people taking dogs to the
beach.
NEW PETROL STATION
A new NPD self-serve petrol
in Diamond Harbour early next
year. The new petrol station will
be located at 141 Marine Dr in
front of the On the Spot dairy.
ELECTRICAL FIRE
Four fire trucks and 20 firefighters
were called to the Sumner
telephone exchange on Saturday
about 9pm after a fire started in
the building’s electrical wiring
and spread up the wall. Sumner
Volunteer Fire Brigade chief
officer Daryl Sayer said it took
about 45min to put the 2m
fire out. The fire disrupted the
telephone network until Sunday
afternoon.
