SUMNER LOST to Lancaster
Park on Saturday in their third
consecutive defeat of the season.
Sumner now sit in sixth place
on the championship ladder and
will be relying on other results
and a win against Burnside at the
weekend to make the semi-finals.
Sumner club captain Dan
Vann said the side have been
struggling to rediscover their
early season form in recent
weeks.
Sumner lost the toss and
batted first. Lancaster bowled
well and took early wickets to
have Sumner in trouble at 14/3.
A small fight back from opener
George Moore (25) and Dan
Vann (15) settled things slightly
before wickets continued to fall
until a last wicket partnership
of 22 gave Sumner a total of 100
all out.
In reply, Sumner made a great
start, picking up early wickets
and having Lancaster in serious
trouble at 39/5, largely due to
Dean Smith taking three early
wickets (3/3).
Slow bowlers Dan Vann (1/11)
and Jonny Percasky (1/13) put
the squeeze on, only conceding
24 from their 16 overs and
picking up a wicket each.
Lancaster Park eventually
decided to make a dash to get
over the line and it came off with
their No 8 batsman Will Ainsley
making a quick 27 to get them to
the total and the win.
Vann said it was the
side’s batting that let them
down.
“We just aren’t scoring enough
runs as a team,” he said.
“Early in the season, we were
the leading batting side in the
league and we still have four
of our batsmen in the top 10
run-scorers in the league. So we
know we have the ability to score
SLUMP: Dean Smith’s three early wickets were not enough to
prevent Sumner falling to their third consecutive defeat.
the runs, it’s just a matter of
getting ourselves in and going on
to bigger scores.”
Vann remains confident his
side can bounce back against
seventh-place Burnside on
Saturday and reach the semifinals.
for sure but we know what we
need to do and how to address
it.”
THE Christchurch City Chorus
is putting on a festive show to
get everyone into the Christmas
spirit.
On December 15 the choir will
take the stage to perform The
Magic of Christmas.
Musical director Virginia
Humphrey-Taylor said the show
would include Christmas carols,
skits, poems and dancing.
“We want to share the joy and
music of Christmas with people,”
she said.
“We want everyone to come
and sing carols with us. It’s
something for the whole family
to get everyone excited for
Christmas.”
She said about 80 members of
the choir would be performing.
“We’ve got quartets singing,
we’ve got small groups singing,
we’ve got about 20 children who
will be performing,” she said.
“We’ll sing a lot of the classic
Christmas carols, but there will
also be a few songs that people
won’t know; songs from around
the world about Christmas.”
The show would give members
a chance to get some practice
in before the Christchurch City
Chorus heads to New Orleans
for a performance in September.
“We’re doing as many shows
as we can so we are prepared,”
she said.
She said she hoped to showcase
the group and encourage
new members to join.
“We’re looking for new
members all the time. There’s
always a turn over of membership
because people move away
or their lives change, so this is a
chance for people who might be
The Magic of Christmas will
