The 16-year-old was selected by Wigram MP Megan Woods and will represent the electorate at next year’s Youth Parliament in Wellington. Iris hopes to learn more about Parliament and the Wigram electorate. “Initially, I was quite surprised that I was selected, but as soon as the idea of being a Youth MP settled in, I felt the determination to do a good job of it,” she said. “I am definitely looking forward to working with Megan Woods.” Iris became interested in politics during a school trip to the Beehive when she was at intermediate school. She believes the most important issue facing young people is a lack of employment opportunities. “This issue could lead into youth crime, which is definitely a problem which New Zealand doesn’t want to deal with,” Iris said. Dr Woods asked each high school in her electorate to nominate a candidate for the role of Youth MP. LEADERS: Wigram MP Megan Woods has chosen Hornby High School student Iris Taramai, 16, as her Youth MP. She asked the students why they thought they would be a good representative for Wigram and how they would benefit from the experience. “I was very impressed by how dedicated Iris is to both her studies and extra-curricular activities, such as softball,” Dr Woods said. “I was also impressed with Iris’s passion for her local community. I think she’ll make a great Youth MP,” she said. The 2019 Youth Parliament will take place from March 1 to August 31, with 120 Youth MPs and up to 20 youth press gallery members attending the two-day Youth Parliament event in Wellington on July 16 and 17. Halswell resident Geoff Teehan responds to the article about new speeds in the Knights Stream subdivision AS A resident of the Longhurst subdivision, the one that is right next door to Knights Stream, I had to laugh at an article in the Western News that quote: “A city council report said residents in the [Knights Stream] subdivision had raised concerns about the existing speed limits.” A lot of residents have complained to council about our untidy landscaping, lawns not mowed, weeds up to 45cm even gorse growing in an empty section. I complained to the local councillor and she said she had raised the issue with council but to no avail. My rates are $3500 and I’m sure everyone expects a better service. Also they give out community pride certificates to residents with tidy gardens, pity they don’t set an example. Abbey van der Plas – How about eat before you go to the meeting and donate that $84 to a food bank programme or a family that needs it. Expecting food at these meetings is just another form of privilege. Chrys Horn – I don’t begrudge them some food – from what I’ve seen, the board often come to meetings from work and often haven’t had the chance to eat beforehand. Some of them at least work hard on our behalf (and if they don’t then that’s because people didn’t vote or didn’t bother finding out about who they voted for). Being able to have something to eat means that they are more likely to last the distance. On top of that the food is offered to and eaten by any of the public that come to the meeting – and it is not luxury stuff, nor luxury quantities, based on what I’ve seen on the occasions I’ve been to meetings. Clearly though, if their spend is high relative to other boards they might need to think about what they buy and perhaps who they buy from.
