Fulton Hogan submitted its resource consent application to Environment Canterbury and Selwyn District Council for its proposed 170ha quarry last Tuesday (page 3). If this year is anything to go by, it will be fiercely fought by residents who have made their stance against the quarry clear. Quarries are becoming an increasingly hot topic in the west, as we discussed with Yaldhurst author Soraya Nicholas (page 10). It’s a topic I have to cover frequently. A common phrase mentioned to me is the “sense of fear” in the community about the potential effects of quarries. As the city grows, the demand for rock will continue to increase. And as the population grows, more and more people will find themselves near quarries, particularly as the population shifts west. Environment Canterbury and the Selwyn District Council received the resource consent application last Tuesday. ECan said the application will now be assessed to determine if all of the required information has Simon Moore been provided by Fulton Hogan. The resource consent application is yet to be formally accepted by ECan. The company is proposing a quarry at a 170ha site on Curraghs, Dawsons, Jones and Maddisons Rds. Fulton Hogan first announced its plans for a quarry in the area in December last year and said it would submit the consent application in February. But the submission was delayed to May, then September, and then November. The quarry proposal has attracted vocal opposition from Templeton and Weedons residents. Templeton Residents’ Association chairman Garry Kilday said people have anticipated the resource consent application for some time. “It’s been coming and it’s not unexpected.” Weedons Residents’ Association member Simon Moore said it was a “very sad day” for the communities near the proposed quarry. “None of us want it. They’ve got no interest except money. It’s nothing to do with Christchurch’s needs,” he said. I’ll do what it takes,” he said. •Author fights quarry, page 10 Local News Now In Brief Fire rages, homes at risk SCHOOL CROSSINGS Two kea crossings have been proposed outside Knights Stream and Wigram schools to help keep pupils safe. The crossings would go on Richmond Ave, Halswell, and Curtis St in Wigram. Kea crossings only operate when a school patrol and two fluorescent orange crossing point flag signs are present. A decision to install the crossings is set to be made by the Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board tonight. DENTON PARK MEMORIAL Following a request from Hornby residents, the city council has investigated the possibility of a memorial plaque at Denton Park. City council team leader heritage parks and city centre, Nicky Brown, said the plaque would cost about $1300. In September, Save Denton Park chairman Mark Peters called for a plaque to recognise the park as a gift to the city by Stanley Denton. BASKETBALL GRANT The Hornby Hoops 3 v 3 basketball tournament may get $1892 in public funding to help run the event. The tournament will be held next Friday at Hornby High School.
