TEMPLETON AND Weedons residents have long known this
day was coming.
Fulton Hogan submitted its resource consent application to
Environment Canterbury and Selwyn District Council for its
proposed 170ha quarry last Tuesday (page 3).
If this year is anything to go by, it will be fiercely fought by residents
who have made their stance against the quarry clear.
Quarries are becoming an increasingly hot topic in the west, as
we discussed with Yaldhurst author Soraya Nicholas (page 10).
It’s a topic I have to cover frequently. A common phrase mentioned
to me is the “sense of fear” in the community about the
potential effects of quarries.
As the city grows, the demand for rock will continue to
increase. And as the population grows, more and more people will
find themselves near quarries, particularly as the population shifts
west.
I suspect quarrying in the outskirts of the city will be one of the
big environmental debates in the coming years, which may one
day force the Government to intervene. – Anan Zaki
