Playgroup and
Toddlers
Playgroup has been full of fun this
month with the children enjoying
dressing up and apple bobbing at
our Halloween party. They have
also been taking part in gymnastics
lessons and learning stills such as
We are having a stall at the
chocolate reindeer and a lucky dip.
even if it’s just to say hello. Feel
free to come and have a chat if you
want to fi nd out more about our
Haunted Halloween!
Halloween celebrations were
‘Spooktacular!’ in St. Fillan’s Primary
and it was great to see so many
witches, wizards, zombies and ghouls
get dressed up to come along to our
Annual Halloween Disco! We are
ever grateful to our wonderful Parent
Council members who organise this
fundraising event and to the Harvey
family who entertained us with
costumes, dancing and music from ‘The Greatest Showman!’
Eco Warriors!
Hopefully, we are well on our way to achieving our third green flag and
maintaining our green flag status. The Eco Committee focussed on the
theme of ‘Litter’ as part of their Committee focus week and they organised a
whole school litter pick. Each class were given a specific day to go out into
the playground and collect as much litter as they could. Each litter bag was
weighed before the items were recycled and the winning class were treated
to an extra playtime which they thoroughly enjoyed. Who knew collecting
rubbish could be so rewarding?!
The Eco Committee also focussed on the promotion of healthy lifestyles
during their focus week and they were keen to encourage children and
adults to walk to school, scooter /ride a bike or engage in ‘Park and Stride.’
During Assembly, children also discussed the health benefits of walking
to school, the positive effects on the environment and the sustainability of
MADD Talent Showcased at Gryffe
On Wednesday 7th November, Gryffe hosted the annual MADD Show (Music, Art, Drama and Dance). The recurring
theme of this year’s MADD Show was of Chinese teacher, philosopher and politician - Confucius. The reason for
this was to pay homage to Gryffe High School launching the world’s first Confucius Specialist Sports Hub in a
high school. It was an incredible event that enabled pupils to show off their excellent art work. S2 and S3 pupils’
masks and hats were displayed by models from the younger school, while the spectacular design projects, made by
the S6 Advanced Higher Art students, were
worn by a great team of senior models from
S4, S5 and S6. The drama department also
debuted their own performance of Chinese
Cinderella, which gave a twist to the usual
fairy-tale, allowing them to explore and teach
about Confucius values. In addition to this,
there were amazing singing and dancing
performances, as well as, concluding with a
piece from a collection of Music pupils.
All in all, 2018’s MADD Show was a superb
showcase of the talent and creativity abundant
within Gryffe High School.
Gryffe Confucius Classroom is a World First
This session we have begun our partnership with Scottish Schools Football Association and Confucius Institute for
Scotland’s Schools as the world’s first and only Confucius Specialist Hub for sports.
As a specialist hub, we will work with SSFA and CISS in promoting Chinese language and culture both in school
and with other schools and community groups in conjunction with the work of the SSFA. In 2019-2020 a specialist
Hanban teacher will join the school to support our programme and work with pupils in different curricular areas and
in extended curricular work to promote Chinese language and culture.
The official launch of our specialist hub took place on Wednesday 7th November. Invited guests included
representatives from Gryffe High School, SSFA, CISS, Steven Thompson as a former pupil and Scottish
Internationalist and Steven Quinn, Acting Director of Children’s Services at Renfrewshire Council.
Mr G. O’Hare Supporting Depute Head and FH Health and Wellbeing
the planet. Each class recorded their participation and progress in terms
of number of steps and they recorded their information on a wall chart
using stickers. Primary 6 won the ‘Golden Trainer Award’ as they were
the class who worked together to uphold our school value of ‘Teamwork’
by encouraging one another throughout the week to increase their step
count.
Super Squash!
The children in Primaries 5 and 6 have enjoyed a block of squash taster
sessions in association with Strathgryffe Tennis Club. Alan, the coach has
been putting the children through their paces and has provided opportunities
for the children to develop their core skills and confidence by rotating around
a variety of activity stations. Ten of the children have been invited to take
part in a local squash tournament along with other local schools and they
are looking forward to putting their skills into practice on a proper squash
court. We wish they all the very best in the tournament!
We Will Remember…
Some of our Primary 5 children were
delighted to join forces with Houston Primary
School and participate in the ‘Houston Big
Remembrance Sing’ which took place
in Houston and Killellan Church. It was
wonderful to take part and sing a variety
of wartime favourites whilst remembering
those who gave their lives in sacrifice.
Two of our Primary 7 children were honoured
to be invited along to the ‘Freeland’ Church in Bridge of Weir to attend their
Remembrance Sunday Service. The girls were very proud to receive the
flags of the British Legion as a powerful symbol which helped us to focus on
the young people who lost their lives in the First World War.
