SOMERVILLE — Christopher
J. Malerich, of
Somerville, the beloved
husband of Matthew
Barnes passed away
on Friday, November 9,
2018. He was 50.
Born in Lynn he was
the cherished son of of
Arline T. (Hanson) and
Jerome B. Malerich of Lynnfi eld.
Dear brother of Jerome Malerich
and his wife Betty of York, PA. Uncle
of Daniel and Joshua Malerich.
Chris attended Our Lady of
Assumption Elementary School
in Lynnfi eld and St. John’s Preparatory
High School in Danvers,
which laid the foundation for his
lifelong Christian faith. He went
on to earn his degree in Classics
at Tufts University with a Phi Beta
Kappa award. After deciding not
to pursue a career in academia,
he left his doctoral program at
Princeton University to return
home and started a career in
banking. He managed to work for
a number of companies over the
course of his career without ever
leaving his job, starting his journey
at Bay Bank and ending it at
Santander Bank.
While he loved his work, his
heart was at home with his husband,
Matthew. They met online
and managed to connect in a way
that perfectly encapsulated their
relationship. Matthew’s friends
were delighted to welcome Chris
into the fold and he wrapped
himself so completely into their
lives and their hearts that it was
diffi cult to remember a time B.C.
(before Chris), as that dark period
came to be known.
Chris was adored for his kindness,
compassion, generosity of
spirit, and the gusto with which
he delighted in life. He loved
learning, music, travel, good food
& wine and the company of his
friends. His love of sweets, especially
whoopie pies and Nutella,
was legendary.
Chris and Matthew
were together for seven
years before their friends
peer-pressured them
into marrying in October
2014. They married in a
style just their own, the
highlight of which was
reciting their vows in the Theatre
of Electricity at the Museum of
Science, followed by stepping
into the Faraday cage to be surrounded
by lightning.
In 2017, Chris was diagnosed
with cancer. When he had to stop
working as a result, he threw himself
into learning how to cook,
avidly watching PBS shows and
studying the works of Cooks Illustrated
and America’s Test Kitchen.
He was soon routinely expanding
Matthew’s waist line and volunteering
with Community Cooks,
preparing home-cooked meals
for neighbors in need.
Chris lived a big life in the ways
that really mattered—a big heart,
fi lled with love for his friends and
family, unfailingly generous with
his time—and he was loved in
return for being exactly who he
was. In the words of the Canadian
poet, Céline Dion, “You’re here
in my heart and my heart will go
on and on”. Chris will remain in
our hearts forever and he will be
sorely missed.
Mass was celebrated in St.
Maria Goretti Church, on Friday,
