As a person who sets high (at times
ridiculously high) standards, it’s often a
relief to get to the end of the year – and this
year especially. Along with everyone else,
whether working at a breakneck pace or
to a simpler rhythm, I find it a good time to
reflect on the events of the previous twelve
months. The businessperson in me looks to
analyse and assess. To attempt to repeat the
successes and minimize the falls in the year
that’s been and, of course, there have
been both.
Achieving the highest performing office
internationally for the Harcourts brand has
been the biggest accolade. It’s seen the
Papanui office placed as the number-one office
out of over 900 in 10 countries. Undoubtedly
a proud moment, but there have also been
the usual conflicts that come with running
a successful business whilst managing the
various agendas of over 120 people across
five offices.
It’s also been a year where law changes
around Overseas Investment and Anti-
Money Laundering have required a new level
of compliance and vigilance. 2019 will no
doubt see even more training and specialist

assistance to ensure the highest levels of
professional care are maintained in these
very new areas.
Personally, the mother in me is adjusting to
the new dimension of having two sons mostly
living away from home and another Christmas
(the seventh) without our eldest son Harry, who
will be working in the Japanese Alps. Like every
parent, these moments make me thoughtful
and nostalgic, and probably contribute to the
rationale for always having an open house on
Christmas Day. We’re a ‘more the merrier’ kind
of family and our day is complete with our own
quirky traditions and enough food and drink to
feed a small army.
So, it’s been a great year, a changing market
and a changing environment. Adjusting to new
price points in different demographics whilst
instigating additional support services for the
company. The appointment of a full-time social
media designer has opened-up a whole new
methodology for connecting with potential
clients and purchasers, and the year ahead sees
us adding to this part of the business. Giving back
has also been a constant theme, and children
and the vulnerable are the first on our list. So,
what will 2019 look like? Like other years, it will
probably have its share of challenge and cheer.
I’m hoping it means lots of good madness, a
caring community, lots of opportunity and more
time with the people I love.
