Time capsule to spend 100 more years underground THE CONTENTS of a 1920s time capsule recently opened in St Albans are set to be reburied. The capsule was opened in September after being hidden for nearly 100 years. It was buried in 1920 when the St Albans Public Library was constructed and was only discovered in 2011 when the building was demolished. Copies of The Lyttelton Times and The Press from the 1920s were among the artefacts found in the capsule, along with a letter. However, at Friday’s meeting, the Papanui-Innes Community Board decided to rebury the capsule alongside a new one. It will be buried in 2020 with the completion of the new St Albans Community Centre and is set to be reopened on the 100th anniversary of the community centre in 2120. City council staff will incorporate the two capsules into the centre’s foundation design. Community groups will be invited to make a contribution to the contents at the St Albans Park reopening event. A replica of the contents of the old capsule may also be displayed in the entrance to the community centre. •From page 1 But city councillors Mike Davidson and Pauline Cotter said the report actually highlights a more dangerous intersection along the corridor – Greers and Harewood Rds. We need to be mindful where the risk is down that corridor.” However, Cr Keown said you cannot compare the two as the Greers and Harewood Rds intersection already has traffic lights. “The problems are not because it has traffic lights, it’s a number of other reasons. This is about getting people across that intersection.” Mayor Lianne Dalziel said it is important to look at the entire corridor as Harewood Rd has changed. “It is no longer the major thoroughfare that it used to be.
