Dear visitors to Hamburg,
dear residents of Hamburg, moin, moin,
You’re standing on the Hamburg waterfront, but the
ocean is still over 100 kilometres away. The Speicherstadt
(warehouse complex), the harbour docks and
wharves, the museum ships and the Fish Market on
the River Elbe all mark the border to the wide world
even though they are far inland.
Ships from all five continents have anchored on the
shores of Hamburg for hundreds of years. Countless
emigrants sailed for the New World from these shores.
The history and stories that shaped the Port of Hamburg
have not lost their significance in the age of the
container and are prominent features of the modern
European metropolis that Hamburg is today.
Tradition is the foundation for modernity, a fact proved
by the Low German greeting Moin, a greeting that
is used 24 hours a day – see for yourself. Greet the
crew on board a harbour barge with Moin! and eyes
will immediately light up. It works just as well in the
Speicherstadt and HafenCity too. People are delighted
to encounter visitors with even the tiniest command of
German, but this word goes a long way in Hamburg.
The HafenCity represents one of the largest urban
development projects in Europe. Together with the
construction of the Hamburg Philharmonic Hall, it represents
a major factor shaping the face of Hamburg.
Hamburg residents have rediscovered the port area
as an ideal habitat for living, culture, recreation & relaxation.
In addition to many new, i e recent residents,
culture, entertainment and restaurants have already
secured attractive waterfront sites here.
This brochure provides visitors to Hamburg and Hamburg
residents a comprehensive overview of the diversity
and appeal of the Hanseactic city. Enjoy your stay,
enjoy discovering the maritime character of Hamburg!
An ideal point of departure for a walking tour is the
HAFENCITY INFOCENTER in the historical brick building
from 1886/87, the KESSELHAUS, the former boiler house
and central power station for the Speicherstadt, now
home to a 32squaremetre model illustrating completion
of the various stages of this major urban development
project. From the café terrace bordering the Elbe
fleet (canal), visitors can take in the magnificent view
of the historic warehouse complex.
After leaving the Kesselhaus, cross the street Am Sandtorkai
to the promenade and a view of the manmade
harbour basis Sandtorhafen. Follow the promenade
down to the MAGELLAN TERRACES where a glass cube
structure, the INFOPAVILION HAMBURG PHILHARMONIC
design details and a
first impression of the
worldclass concert hall,
now under construction.
rounding the Hanseatic Trade Center, and take in the
spectacular view. Farther ahead is the Sandtorhafen
bascule bridge with the best view of the Sandtorhafen.
At the tip of Kaiserkai, immediately to the right, Hamburg‘s
new landmark, the HAMBURG PHILHARMONIC
HALL, built as a superstructure on the quayside warehouse
EXPERIENCE HISTORY
Walking Tour speicherstadt
The warehouse complex is actually a city within the city, a
unique, historic complex of warehouse and storehouse blocks.
a stroll through this impressive area of red-brick buildings in
Wilhemine style brings to life the world of Hanse merchants
and warehouse keepers.
The Speicherstadt was built between 1888 and 1927 and offers a plethora of picturesque
perspectives between the Elbe fleete (canals) and red-brick architecture.
The walking tour starts at the Baumwall underground
station. Cross the street to Niederbaumbrücke and
the western side of the Speicherstadt, the spit of land
known as Kehrwiederspitze, site of the Hanseatic
Trade Center, a complex of four office buildings built
between 19922002.
Follow the street Am Sandtorkai until you reach the
warehouse Speicherblock L on the left, home of
SPICY‘S GEWÜRzMUSEUM, a handson museum presenting
the exciting and aromatic world of spices. From
Sandtorkai cross the Sandbrücke where on Brooksbrücke
visitors catch a first glimpse of the memorial
plaque commemorating Hamburg‘s integration into the
customs zone of the German Reich under Emperor
Wilhelm II on October 29, 1888.
Interrupt your walk with a “detour” to the world‘s largest
model train installation, the MINIATUR WUNDERLAND
at Kehrwieder 24, in Block D. A miniature, mindboggling
world of the superlative: over 800 trains
with a total of about 10,000 cars chug along miles
of tracks through miniature, truetooriginal countrysides
populated with over 200,000 miniature figures.
N
Even the Elbe riverbank and the Speicherstadt are
here in miniature.
Continue down the street Brook under the Kibbelsteg
Bridges until reaching Pickhuben and take a peek at the
romantic indoor courtyard tucked away in warehouse
Block H. From here cross the Neuerwegsbrücke and
continue until you reach
Block O, an elaborate
merchant building with
picturesque bay windows
dating back to imperial
times and whose architecture
in many ways resembles
that of a castle.
The headquarters of the HHLA
are known as the “town hall of
the Speicherstadt“.
Return to Neuerwegsbrücke
and take the first
right onto St Annenufer.
The SPEICHERSTADTMUSEUM occupies a historic warehouse
floor in house No 2 of Block R and portrays the
history of the warehouse complex in authentic surroundings.
One may also participate in a typical teatasting.
Discover what is known to port experts as
the “TOWN HALL” OF THE SPEICHERSTADT on the street
St Annen, a splendid, neoRenaissance building housing
the head offices of the Hamburg Hafen und Logistik
AG (Hamburg Port and Logistics).
The treelined Holländische Brook alongside the Elbe
fleet (canal) has a pastoral atmosphere to it. The pointed
arches of Block U are a beautiful example of the ornate
Wilheminianstyle façades typical of the Speicherstadt.
Opposite the Holländische Brook on the other
side of the fleet stands another very representative
building, Block V. At the end of Holländische Brook
LONGING FOR THE FARAWAY
Hamburg would be inconceivable without the harbour, and it
has been that way for eight hundred years! reason enough to
celebrate once a year with the world‘s biggest harbour party.
Windjammers and vintage ships, fish rolls and the dance of the tugboats are
equally popular with the hundreds of thousands of enthusiastic visitors to the
Port of Hamburg Birthday festivities.
45
42
39
36
The starting point for this tour is the underground station
Baumwall. Directly opposite the station in the City
Sporthafen lies the converted FEUERSCHIFF (lightship),
farther down at Überseebrücke the historic and elegant
general cargo freighter CAP SAN DIEGO. Launched by the
HamburgSüd shipping line in 1961, it is currently the
last seaworthy museum
freighter of its kind.
Museum ships CAP SAn DIEGo
and RICKMER RICKMERS.
The carefully restored
three master barque
RICKMER RICKMERS, a former
East India trader and
Cape Horn circumnavigator,
is reminiscent of
bygone days when the
harbour was hardly visible
for all the tall ships lying at anchor. Moored at the eastern
Landungsbrücken pontoon it is open for inspection
from stern post to wheel.
The LANDUNGSBRÜCKEN, or wharfs, were built at the
beginning of the twentieth century as a waterfront station
for passenger ships. Today, the Landungsbrücken
are the centre of tourist focus in the harbour. Not only
do all the Elbe ferry lines, numerous harbour tours and
barge excursions depart from here, the Landungs
The St Pauli Elbe Tunnel at the Landungsbrücken connects pedestrians
and motorists to the lookout platform on the other side of the Elbe.
brücken also attract residents and tourists alike for a
maritime stroll featuring souvenir shops, the bustle of
the incoming and outgoing boats and ships, and the
smell of fish rolls wafting through the air.
For those who like to be in over their heads, the
ST PAULI ELBE TUNNEL is a masterpiece of engineering
built almost one hundred years ago. Two tunnels slightly
over 400 metres in length are open to pedestrians,
bikers and motorists. Take in the spectacular panorama
of the river, the city and the Michel from the other side
of the Elbe.
On the way back to the underground station climb up
to the Stintfang platform high above the Landungsbrücken
for a fabulous view of the river and the opposite
Elbe banks beyond. Take the U3 underground
train from Baumwall for a splendid, elevated view of
the harbour after visiting the nearby Baroque church
ST MICHAELIS, the Hamburg landmark affectionately
known as the Michel, and taking the elevator up to
the top of the 132metre high spire for a spectacular
allround view of Hamburg.
Walking Tour Fish Market
EARLY BIRDS ARE CLEVER!
You don‘t have to stay up all night partying at the reeperbahn
to enjoy the early-morning activity at st-Pauli-Fischmarkt, but
it might help…
In the crowd at the traditional, Sunday-morning Fish Market you‘ll find everything
for an early supper or late brunch.
31
30
28
Walking away from Landungsbrücken and shortly
after passing the multicoloured buildings of the Hafenstrasse
on the right, the footbridge leads pedestrians
from the Elbe promenade to the lookout point “Park
Fiction”, an art project and leisure design set under
palm trees.
The best time to enjoy the riverside FISH MARKET is
the wee hours of Sunday morning (5:00 – 9:00 a m),
the time when early birds and nightowls converge,
both drawn by the quickwitted market criers and inspired
by the vast offer of merchandise available. The
FISCHAUKTIONSHALLE, built in 1894, is the traditional
and impressive centre of the fish market, and frequently
used as a venue for special events, such
as the welldeserved morning pint after making the
rounds at the Fish Market. The Auction Hall with its
intricate iron latticework design has been a listed
building since 1989.
STILWERK at Grosse Elbstrasse 68, once a malthouse
dating back to 1907, was thoroughly gutted and restored
and now houses a shopping centre for furniture, design
and lifestyle. Together with other stores, bars and restaurants
along Grosse Elbstrasse they have established the
Photo: Hamburg Tourismus GmbH
elbmeile e.V., an association
which has been very
successful in developing
the Elbe River banks in
Altona. Across from Stilwerk
in an elaborately
remodelled ensemble of
old warehouses are the
head offices of the Ger Stilwerk on the “elbmeile”.
man chapter of Greenpeace.
Pedestrians can take in breathtaking views of
the bustling port and the docks of the old, traditional
shipyard BLOHM+VOSS across the river.
Naturally, a stroll along the Fish Market is synonymous
with fish! While fishing cutters no longer land here
regularly, the twokilometre stretch of fish merchants
along Grosse Elbstrasse offers every kind of absolutely
fresh fish and seafood the seven seas have to offer.
There is something to suit every taste. It is a known
fact that fish like to swim, so try one of the beach clubs
along this stretch of the Elbe for an exotic cocktail in a
relaxing beach atmosphere.
Dockland – architecture in its
purest form.
A recent addition to the
harbour is a very unusual
office building close by,
DOCKLAND, an extravagant
glass structure,
which similar to the sleek
prow of a ship, juts out 40
metres over the Elbe. The
lookout platform on the roof is open to the public and
offers a sensational view of the river and the Süderelbe
flowing into the Elbe River. HADAG ferries stop at the
Dockland pier, taking visitors back to the Fish Market or
Landungsbrücken, thereby passing a striking structure,
the former FERRY TERMINAL.
Walking Tour of Övelgönne
HAMBURG‘S PEARLY COAST
one of the most recent architectural success stories in Hamburg
is the development of the Elbe bank in neumühlen,
thereby integrating it into the string of architectural pearls
along the riverbank. Just beyond the Museum Harbour is the
public and very popular Elbe beach with the famed strandperle
serving as a base station.
Upon arriving at the Dockland pier on the HADAG ferry,
the Neumühlen waterfront stretches out before one
and, with it, an unostentatious
ensemble of commercial
buildings characterised
by their simple yet
elegant industrial design,
forming together a bold
statement within the urban
development project The “string of pearls”.
along the Elbe popularly
referred to as the STRING OF PEARLS concept. At the
foot of the Elbe bank is the listed LAWAETzHAUS, at
Neumühlen 1620, named after the communityserviceminded
Hamburg merchant and textile industrialist
Johann Daniel Lawaetz (17501826). A prime example
of the radical change in the use of former industrial
buildings is the striking AUGUSTINUM structure, a historic
refrigerated warehouse from the 1920s rebuilt as
a very modern, upmarket senior citizen‘s residence.
The MUSEUM HARBOUR ÖVELGÖNNE is also adjacent to
the Neumühlen pier and features a collection of historic
The Museum Harbour in Övelgönne is home to a number of vintage
vessels and the good water quality of the Elbe makes water sports a
pleasure.
vessels, including a lightship and steamdriven icebreaker,
fishing cutters, and a historic floating crane.
Between the Museum Harbour and the riverfront in
Övelgönne and next to a pyramid of stairs, stands the
rather inconspicuous ventilator house, a reminder that
the motorway runs directly underneath this tranquil
scene into the fourpipe Elbe tunnel. Hard to believe?
True, however, the man standing out in the Elbe and
gazing upriver is not a figment of your imagination, but
an installation by artist Stephan Balkenhol.
Upon reaching the ventilator house turn into the narrow
pass to capture the otherwordly charm of the carefully
restored CAPTAINS‘ AND PILOTS‘ HOUSES on Övelgönner
Weg. After a short walk, one arrives at the countless
stairs of Himmelsleiter (stairway to heaven) leading
up to the Elbchaussee high above the Elbe riverbank.
The Elbchaussee, incidentally, is ideal for taking in the
magnificent panorama of impressive estates lining the
riverbank for a stretch of 10 km. Turn right to Elbchaussee
towards the centre of town and down Schulberg
to the waterfront. Now is a good time to join the other
beachcombers at the STRANDPERLE until the last ferry
leaves the Neumühlen pier.
Walking Tour Elbe Beach
UPRIVER, DOWNRIVER
The pictorial, dry and sandy Elbe coast stretches from the
long stairway Himmelsleiter all the way to Teufelsbrück and
beyond to Blankenese, offering a myriad of more or less contemplative
stops along the way.
Casual beach life meets one of the world‘s largest and busiest ports.
The Elbe coastal path is one of the most popular promenades
in Hamburg and wonderful for a day (or more)
of rest and relaxation. As the river widens, the beach
changes with the rise and fall of the tide. Just beyond
Övelgönne the path leads past the open park countryside
so typical of the Elbe suburbs – leaving the
madding crowd of the city far behind. Container ships
or an express ferry on the river are the only things
reminiscent of the bustling port.
ALTER SCHWEDE (Old Swede), an erratic block weighing
almost 220 tonnes and dating back to the Ice
Age, stands on HansLeipUfer. It was discovered
during dredging work in the channel and derives its
Utterly relaxing – the park surrounding
Jenish Haus.
gradually migrated to the
Elbe. Our next stop along
the Elbe coastal path
is TEUFELSBRÜCK. Despite
its misleading name
(Devil‘s Bridge) the pier
and tiny yacht harbour is
a popular place to stop for
a small libation and watch
the ships sail in and out of
the harbour.
The JENISCH HAUS estate, in classicist style, lies above
Teufelsbrück in an extensive park and is a perfect example
of patrician living during the Biedermeier period.
The park, now a nature reserve and open to the public,
is peaceful and inviting for long strolls. Beyond the
house at the back of the park lies the ERNST BARLACH
HAUS, the home of works by the expressionist Hamburg
sculptor.
Our walk along the Elbe ends at the Elbschloss stairway.
Whereas the waterfront on the opposite side of
the river is shaped by the
imposing Hamburg Airbus
complex, on this side of
the river we come face to
face with yet another fine
FINKENWERDER STYLE
Finkenwerder, the Hamburg island in the Elbe that no longer is
an island, has always been different. once populated by fishermen,
now no longer. a typical Hamburg speciality, Scholle
Finkenwerder Art (plaice Finkenwerder style), is named after
Finkenwerder. But who actually knows the natives of Finkenwerder
and their island?
A stroll along the Süderdeich in Finkenwerder presents an idyllic view of the
fisherman‘s village and the tiny, thatch-roofed, half-timbered homes.
9
10
When the HADAG ferry line 62 casts off from StPauli
Landungsbrücken for Finkenwerder passengers can
look forward to a fascinating 30minute cruise down
the river, regardless of season or weather. The ferry
passes the Blohm + Voss docks, the historic Fish Auction
Living Urban Development
In the midst of metropolitan
Hamburg there is a unique setting
where creativity, opportunity,
contradiction and tension
come together to illustrate the
basic social question of coexistence,
as if through a magnifying
glass: the Elbe Islands.
The IBA Hamburg is developing
answers for Hamburg’s future.
Building exhibitions anticipate
the future of living together
as one society, presenting a vivid
picture of environments and
living spaces which, until then,
had only existed as ideas in the
minds of others. Scale models
illustrate these ideas as they
take shape and become practicable.
