Barge Tour
CAST OFF!
Hamburg is a city of waterways. What better way to discover
a number of its outstanding highlights than to book a sightseeing
tour on a barge for an exciting cruise through the harbour
and the secluded fleete of the historic speicherstadt?
The niederbaumbrücken (bridges) connect Baumwall with Kehrwiederspitze.
Hamburg CARD
See one of the world‘s largest ports up close – from
historic museum vessels to giant container ships over
300 metres long – on a barge tour. Experienced captains
pass on their extensive knowledge and a tall tale
or two along the way, which is how they got the nickname
He lücht (Low German for ‘he‘s lying‘). A barge
tour down the countless fleete of the historic Speicherstadt,
beneath old bridges and past listed warehouse
buildings is fascinating for one and all. For a special
treat book the evening tour through the illuminated
Speicherstadt.
FERRY STOPS: Landungsbrücken, City-Sporthafen, Binnenhafen.
The MARITIME CIRCLE LINE offers an unusual tour. Every
two hours, the bright red barges depart from Landungsbrücken,
pier 10, for a circle tour of the maritime
attractions, including Cap San Diego, the Speicher stadt,
the Harbour Museum Hamburg and BallinStadt.
EXPERIENCING THE PORT
Two new museums are located
in the eastern part of the Free
Port Zone, the Harbour Museum,
focusing on the industrial
culture in the port, and Ballinstadt,
featuring the history of
emigration in Hamburg.
The general cargo ship BLEICHEn,
built in 1958.
age of the container. The HARBOUR MUSEUM HAMBURG
is located in shed 50A. In addition to old quayside
cranes, containerhandling equipment and historic rail
cars are on exhibit. The historic general cargo freighter
MS BLEICHEN, which returned to Hamburg from Turkey,
is moored at Hansahafen.
Hamburg was the gateway
to the New World
and a new life for as many
as five million German
and European emigrants
between 1850 and 1939.
The emigrant halls were
The reconstructed BallinStadt. built by the HAPAG shipping
line in 1901. At the
same location the BALLINSTADT museum has been
erected. Visitors can relive the biographies of people
who dreamed of a better life in the New World.
