A 36-year-old woman was arrested by police for the thefts on Monday. Diamond Harbour chief fire officer and former policeman of 34 years, Bob Palmer welcomed the news of the arrest. “It’s certainly taught people to keep an eye Franco Lovrich out for things, which is always a good thing,” Mr Palmer said. Diamond Harbour Neighbourhood Support deputy coordinator Emma Gallagher said residents should remain vigilant in spite of the arrest. “It has put everybody on edge, it’s a bit of a close knit community so it makes you feel a bit vulnerable when you hear stuff like that going on,” Ms Gallagher said. Police said the woman allegedly stole mail over several months and used stolen credit cards from the mail to purchase groceries, cigarettes, alcohol and petrol. She was brought into custody after a search warrant was carried out in Diamond Harbour on Monday morning, Lyttelton Police Sergeant Lovrich said. More than 70 pieces of stolen mail were recovered from the search warrant. The woman is facing charges relating to fraud, receiving stolen property and drugs and will appear at district court on Friday. Bay Harbour News reported earlier this month that Diamond Harbour was experiencing its worst crime wave in the last 20 years. Sergeant Lovrich said most of the woman’s alleged offending is believed to have taken place in Diamond Harbour. However, he said there was some mail from Allandale, Charteris Bay and Governors Bay. He said there was a lot of publicity in the lead up to the arrest and police received more reports recently. It was unclear if the woman had CRIME WAVE: Diamond Harbour residents are relieved after a woman was arrested following a string of mail thefts. an accomplice and it is too early to determine a motive, he said. “It should be a relief to the community this time of year . . . knowing that someone has been charged with the offending,” Sergeant Lovrich said. Police will be returning the recovered mail to its owners over the coming weeks. The arrest was unrelated to the theft of a $1500 boat trailer and it was too early to determine a motive for the alleged mail thefts, Sergeant Lovrich said. BAY HARBOUR Local News Now PAGE 17 Fire rages, homes at risk Trial to stop drain flooding • By Georgia O’Connor-Harding A NEW flood prevention measure may be trialled in Sumner to stop a drain from filling up when it rains. The city council is looking at placing a temporary groyne at a Burgess St outlet to prevent flooding on the street during heavy rain. The temporary groyne would aim to artificially lower sand levels on one side which, if placed next to an outlet, may help clear it. But city council land drainage manager Keith Davison said while staff are looking at the trial on Burgess St, there is no firm plan at this stage. If the trial is successful, the city council may look at expanding it to the Southshore estuary. Questions have been raised over if the trial was successful in Sumner, whether it would have the same outcome at the estuary. The report said while natural tidal effects are expected at Sumner, there is no certainty it will work at drain outlets in the estuary. Thank you for your support over the year!
