But no rain fell at Heathcote Domain. A mistake with the ground’s sprinkler system meant the irrigation came on in the early hours of Sunday morning, leaving the ground drenched and unplayable when the game was due to begin at 10.30am. “The council went in and did some work on Friday. They went into our toby box and changed the settings on our sprinklers, so on Sunday morning they went on when everyone was tucked up in bed,” said club captain David Stack. When both teams arrived at Heathcote Domain it quickly became apparent that no cricket was going to be played on the drenched field. “We tried for a few hours to get the pitch up to scratch but it was just way too wet, there were still SATURDAY SESSION: While the one-day match was called off, Heathcote completed a win in the two-day competition on Saturday thanks to an 11 wicket haul from Marek Bungard. puddles out there,” said Stack. After being understandably sombre with the situation the mood of both sides was lifted when they headed to the Valley Inn Tavern for some very premature post-match drinks at noon. “We wanted to do a boat race at the pub to decide the title but the Papanui Merivale guys weren’t so keen,” said Heathcote bowler Ben Cochrane. The Heathcote team then spent their afternoon playing backyard cricket before returning to the Valley Inn for dinner. Surprisingly it’s the first time the sprinklers at Heathcote have gone off the morning of a major game. Five years ago a second grade twenty20 final at Heathcote was postponed due to an ill-timed overnight sprinkling. Sunday’s sprinkler event capped a weekend where not a lot of cricket was played for SPORTS the premier team. On Saturday Heathcote bowled East Christchurch Shirley out for just 30 to complete an innings and 106 runs victory after Heathcote scored 245 and bowled East Shirley out for 106 in the first innings the previous weekend. Pace bowler Marek Bungard added to his 7-22 picked up in the first innings with 4-10 on Saturday to complete a 10 wicket bag and finish with figures of 11-32. There was also a win in the two-day championship for Sumner. They returned to Edgar MacIntosh Park for the second day in their match against Merivale Papanui. Starting the day with a six run lead Sumner’s opening bowling duo of Nawid Mohamady and Dean Smith picked up three early wickets to have Merivale Papanui under pressure early at 42/3. Skipper Dan Vann turned the game in Sumner’s favour by taking six wickets for just six runs. Merivale lost seven wickets for just 18 runs to reach a total of 61. Sumner chased down the target of 55 but did wobble at times losing four wickets in the process. Brothers top Scarborough Xmas triathlon THE ANNUAL Christmas Cracker triathlon and duathlon took place at in Sumner at the weekend with 184 athletes of all ages lining up at the start on Scarborough Beach. The sprint triathlon featured two brothers at the top of the podium. The men’s event was won by Zach Taylor (left) in 57mins 45secs. He finished just over two minutes ahead of his younger brother Will. The women’s sprint was won by pro triathlete Gina Crawford in 1hr 8mins 28secs. She finished ahead of Helen Wright in second and Marie Hill in third. The duathlon title went to Isla Smith who won both the overall and women’s race in 1hr 3mins 35secs. More than three minutes ahead of male winner Jonny Limmer. The boys youth triathlon title was won by Art Aiken while the girls title went to Lily Greenwood. The event also hoisted a children’s aquathon which was won by Benjamin Crawford in the boys and Emily Scales in the girls race.
