But just over a 100 years ago, he was thrust into an overseas adventure he wouldn’t return from: World War 1. Today we revisit Richard’s life in a small sort of way. The cross which bears his name on display at the Sumner Redcliffs RSA on Armistice Day has been claimed by his great niece, Annette Sowman. Richard’s war started and ended in that hell hole for Kiwis and Australians alike – Gallipoli. He was wounded at Chunuk Bair in August 1915 and shipped to Egypt where he died the following month. It comes after a clause in the plan was initially omitted making it almost impossible for people with properties in the residential unit overlay of the High Flood Woods Hazard Management Area to rebuild or renovate. There are a number of proposed changes for speeds on roads around the peninsula including parts of Lyttelton, Gebbies Pass, Little River, Little Akaloa, Takamatua, Okains Bay and Akaroa. City council staff are analysing the findings and will report back to the Banks Peninsula Community Board in the New Year. NGAIO POINT UPGRADE Major works on the Ngaio Point track between Robinsons Bay and Duvauchelle are being planned. The work will involve flying in gravel to upgrade the track surface. City council staff will contact property neighbours to let them know when construction will start. PORT HILLS PLAN Work on the city council’s Port Hills plan, which includes Urumau Reserve and Whakaraupo, has started. A briefing to city councillors is expected to happen early next year before discussions with key stakeholders, which are expected to start early to mid-next year.
