A LYTTELTON man had a lucky
escape after a fire started in the
ceiling of his home early yesterday
morning.
Lyttelton chief fire officer Mark
Buckley said working smoke
alarms saved the man’s life.
St John spokeswoman Chrissy
Hamilton said the man was
taken to hospital with minor
injuries and was treated for smoke
inhalation.
Fire and Emergency New
Zealand attended the Ticehurst
Rd fire around 2.45am.
It took an hour and a half to put
the fire out, which started when
a ceiling cavity caught fire in the
roof.
Mr Buckley said the kitchen
and lounge area had “quite a bit
of damage” and the ceiling cavity
was 80 to 90 per cent burnt.
He said it would be “hard to
say” what the outcome might
have been if the man didn’t have
working smoke alarms.
“It certainly wouldn’t have been
as good as what it is.”
Mr Buckley said he believed the
man hadn’t owned the house for
very long before the fire.
RICHARD STEVENS was probably a
fairly ordinary sort of bloke, living a fairly
routine sort of life.
But just over a 100 years ago, he was
thrust into an overseas adventure he
wouldn’t return from: World War 1.
Today we revisit Richard’s life in a small sort of way. The cross
which bears his name on display at the Sumner Redcliffs RSA
on Armistice Day has been claimed by his great niece, Annette
Sowman.
Richard’s war started and ended in that hell hole for Kiwis
and Australians alike – Gallipoli.
He was wounded at Chunuk Bair in August 1915 and shipped
to Egypt where he died the following month.
This Christmas spare a moment for Richard and the others
like him who never came home.
THE APPROVAL of a sought
Community Board member
CHRISTMAS PRESENT: A District Plan change will now make
it possible for coastal residents living in the High Flood
Hazard Management Area to rebuild or renovate their homes.
Darrell Latham said it was a
“momentous occasion”.
He said it was vindication for
the stand he took along with
city councillor David East,
Coastal-Burwood Community
board chairwoman Kim Money
and deputy chairman Tim
Sintes over the issue.
In September, Cr East called
for an independent inquiry
since apologised. However, an
investigation into why the clause
“I am absolutely over the
present to see that these changes
have now been approved.”
Christchurch Coastal
Residents United deputy
chairman Warwick Schaffer
welcomed the decision.
“It was getting so close to
Christmas and everyone was
getting nervous . . . I think you
probably heard a collective woohoo
he said.
Bur Dr Latham said it is now
“critically important” the city
council provide information on
how it plans to investigate the
omission.
He said it is important to
have this information so he can
report back to the community
and ensure they have confidence
in the process.
Redcliffs Residents’
Association secretary Pat
McIntosh said Dr Wood’s
decision will be “extremely
popular”.
“It is an acknowledgement
of the current reality and the
difficulties that have been
caused since it became part of
the plan,” she said.
PASSENGER: Godfather of punk
Iggy Pop watched The Androidss
play at the British in 1979.
Bay Harbour News’ article on the history of the British Hotel sparked fond memories for The Androidss’ band member
Mark Wilson and event organiser-turned-Central Otago district councillor Martin McPherson. Julia Evans talks to
them about the time they met the godfather of punk
THE ANDROIDSS’ Mark
Wilson and former promoter
Martin McPherson recall the
night United States punk icon
Iggy Pop turned up at the
British for The Mad Hatter’s
Tea Party gig.
A leather jacket with an
embroidered tiger on the back
and a denim Greek fisherman’s
hat was the perfect disguise for
Iggy Pop.
It was July 13, 1979, and
Iggy Pop was in Christchurch
promoting his I’m Bored album.
McPherson had organised
a gig, and Christchurch punk
band The Androidss were
the headline act. You weren’t
allowed in without a hat.
McPherson had received a
phone call from Iggy Pop’s arrived and they were charged
publicity agent, who needed $5 to get in like everyone else.
some local knowledge.
“I went outside and I was
“I suggested that I might be sitting on the fence and had a
able to help but they would have smoke. He came over and we
to come to Lyttelton because had a smoke together, we even
I was on my way (to the Mad swapped T-shirts,” he said.
Hatter’s Tea Party) and nothing Inside the hotel, The
was going to prevent me from Androidss had started playing.
going to that,” he recalls. McPherson and Iggy Pop
McPherson was working the chatted.
door. He didn’t recognise Iggy “All I can remember is that
Pop and his publicist when they distinctive New York accent,
STAR STRUCK: Mark Wilson and Martin McPherson shared a
whisky with Iggy Pop at the British Hotel in 1979.
it really stood out. We were
talking about the music scene.
He was really interested in what
Lyttelton and Christchurch
were doing, what we did and
what we were doing.”
The Androidss started
playing Iggy Pop’s The
Passenger. “He went inside and
stood in front of the band,”
McPherson said.
Lead guitarist and vocalist
Mark Wilson said the band
played about five Iggy Pop
covers a set, by coincidence.
“I saw this guy and I thought,
what, that guy looks a lot like
Iggy Pop,” he said.
They soon realised it was the
real deal. “He was sitting to the
side of the stage, and we offered
him the mic. He said ‘no man,
it’s your song’.”
When the set was finished,
the band went over to meet
Iggy Pop, who was sitting at
a table, keeping a low profile.
They shared a whisky and
chatted.
“He didn’t say much, kept his
head down and quickly left. He
walked out the door and put
his fingers up in a V for victory
sign, then left,” Wilson said.
But as low profile as it was,
Iggy Pop’s foray into Lyttelton
soon became public.
“They’re tough as bitches,
but they’re beautiful,” he was
quoted as saying about The
Androidss in The Press.
“It certainly helped out
because we soon up and left to
Auckland.”
Only three members of
the seven-piece band are still
around.
The article on the British
Hotel also struck a chord
with readers, who share
their stories of the iconic
haunt
HISTORY: The British Hotel on
the corner of Oxford St and
Norwich Quay has a long and
colourful history.
Peter Thompson – I read
your interesting article in Bay
Harbour News about the British
Hotel. I would like to point out
a few points that might be of
interest to you.
I was property manager for
Dominion Breweries from
1982 to 1992. In this role I was
responsible for some 148 hotels
and taverns throughout the
South Island. The British Hotel
was one of my responsibilities.
The land and buildings were
owned at the time by the then
Lyttelton Borough Council,
which in turn was leased
to various operators – Guy
Daigneault being one such party.
At the time of starting my role
with DB, the British was under
DB control and sub-leased to
Margaret and Fred Archibald.
I believe they had been
operating the hotel for several
years before starting my role
in DB. Mr and Mrs Archibald
operated the hotel until about
1985 or 1986, not too sure.
At the time of their departure
to take up the lease of the
European Hotel in Dunedin,
DB sold its interest in the British
Hotel.
On one occasion, the United
States commander of an ice
breaker wanted to use the
Basement Bar for his crew
and sort out a price with Mr
Archibald. He stated a price
(can’t recall the amount), say
$1000, the commander peeled off
US$1000.
Mr Archibald of course was
referring to New Zealand dollars.
I believe it was a great night.
Another instance was the
upgrade of the tank room,
which needed the floor to be replastered.
To do this with minimal
disruption to trade, the work was
undertaken over the Easter break
closing the bar late Thursday,
plastering the floor on Good
Friday.
For Saturday while the
plasterer was setting, DB parked
a tanker on the street with hose
feed to the bars – one brand only.
On the Sunday, I had two
carpenters attend to various
repair work.
During a tea break a phone
conversation was heard between
Mr Archibald and what appeared
to be a female with Mr Archibald
laying down the law as to an
outstanding debt.
Stories of the British
•From page 5
The safe was open at the time,
with Mr Archibald asking me if I
noticed anything different about
the safe. To me the safe was like
any other similar safe, common
to pubs.
However, Mr Archibald asked
me to follow the line of the
wallpaper above the safe to the
back of the safe.
Low and behold, the safe had
no back to it and apparently this
had been the case for many years.
I’m sure if the customers of
the British were aware of this, a
quick forward manoeuvre and
its contents could readily be
Mr and Mrs Archibald were a
great couple and the British Hotel
continued in safe operational
guidance during their watch.
Jackie Crawford – The
British Hotel was an exciting
place to go and felt slightly risky
when I arrived in Lyttelton 44
years ago.
You never knew who you would
meet or run into. Even a certain
Christchurch lawyer and friends
could be seen there among the
crews from visiting ships from all
around the world, in the bottom
bar of course.
There was a group of working
girls who often travelled with
some crews and the place was
thumping with people. They were
known as ship girls and they used
to travel around New Zealand on
the ships as a lifestyle choice.
Yes, the British was known
globally with the shipping
industry workers. This was precontainer
ships and had a lot
more workers on board.
Visiting seamen were not really
troublesome but Christchurch
locals were and they sometimes
came over and caused fights.
There was never a dull moment
downstairs in the Dive bar and
the girls used to spill up the stairs
alongside local fisherman and a
few hard drinking and singing
locals upstairs.
It was not dull and I used to
make a part time income for a
few years selling instant polaroid
photos to the ship girls and their
chosen partner.
I missed Iggy Pop
unfortunately, but those in
the know used to check out
the shipping arrivals in the
newspaper to see what the action
was like.
All this changed when container
ships became the norm.
However now all that is history.
I still live in Lyttelton. I
t has been gentrified and
cleaned up.
It was nice to see the article.
Cross will find a home
•From page 1
Now more than 100 years
later, a cross honouring his
bravery will be claimed by his
great niece. Annette Sowman
has been the first descendant
to contact the Sumner Redcliffs
RSA to claim one of 21 crosses
remembering the men from
Sumner who died in World War
1. The crosses were on display as
part of the RSA’s Armistice Day
commemorations last month.
Mrs Sowman, 79, said it is
special for her to be able to claim
her great uncle’s cross.
“I am thrilled because it is
the only link I have to him,” she
said.
Mrs Sowman said Pvt Stevens
received several medals after the
war that was passed onto her
grandfather Herbert Webb and
then onto her uncle, but she does
not know what has happened to
them since.
She said she will likely place
the cross in her garden or by
a framed photo she has of her
great uncle. Mrs Sowman said
it would have been a “shock”
for the family to not have Pvt
Stevens return home.
“But don’t forget I wasn’t born
until 1939 . . . I don’t remember
my grandparents saying anything.
They didn’t talk about
those things,” she said.
NEVER FORGOTTEN: World War 2 veteran William Joker and
RSA president Pat Boland stand in front of the 21 crosses on
Wakefield Ave.
The Battle of Chunuk Bair
was a major World War 1 battle
fought between the Ottoman defenders
and troops of the British
Empire over control of the peak
in August 1915.
During the battle New
Zealand suffered nearly 2500
casualties including more than
800 dead.
Pvt Stevens is buried at the
Alexandria (Hadra) War Memorial
Cemetery.
He was the seventh child of
Maria Ann (nee Webb) Stevens
and Captain James Finch Stevens.
His father died tragically
on the wreck of sailing ship
Lizzy Guy in 1888.
The RSA is calling for other
descendants to step forward to
take their cross.
President Pat Boland said
anyone else who may have a
family claim, they should get in
touch with them.
Consultation for
health hub funding
THAT KEEP ON
Growing
A PROPOSAL to increase
Akaroa’s rates to pay for
the new health hub will
have to get seal of approval
from the community.
The Banks Peninsula
Community Board recommended
at its meeting on
Monday to consult on giving
a one-off grant of up to
$1.3 million to the Akaroa
Community Trust.
The trust is fundraising
for the new 12-bed health
hub, which is being built to
replace Akaroa Hospital.
The hospital was damaged
beyond repair during the
February 22, 2011, earthquake.
The Canterbury District
Health Board is partly
funding the $5.9 million
building, but the trust has
promised to contribute
$2.5 million to the project.
It has raised more than
$1.27 million.
The board is recommending
the city council
consult the community on
different options for raising
the money, including a
four or 10 year period.
“The Akaroa Health
Centre is an essential community
facility and we support
in principle the council
providing some funding
towards this project, but we
need to have a conversation
with our community
to gauge whether there is
widespread support for a
targeted rate,’’ said board
deputy chairman Jed
O’Donoghue.
“We want to know if the
community supports the
idea of a targeted rate and,
if so, what time period they
think it should apply for.
It is important their voice
is heard in this decisionmaking
process.”
The targeted rate would
apply to all properties in
the Akaroa and the bays
area. If the city council
agrees, it is likely to apply
from July.
Work on the new centre
is due to be completed in
June.
Plan to slow
speeding
traffic along
Onuku Rd
• By Julia Evans
ONUKU RUNAGA’S battle to
get cars to slow down around its
marae has finally been won.
Concerns have been raised
for a number of years about the
“inappropriate speed” of vehicles
on Onuku Rd, near Akaroa, particularly
when there are events at
the marae.
However, at its meeting on
Monday, the Banks Peninsula
Community Board approved
plans to install two speed bumps.
The road currently has a
100km/h speed limit, but it’s
planned to drop to 40km/h as
part of the Banks Peninsula speed
limit review.
“Whilst the recorded mean
speeds are relatively low
(35.4km/h) and the safe and
appropriate speed for the area
is considered to be 40km/h, the
recorded 85 per cent speed is
43.6km/h, and the maximum
57.1 km/h. Higher vehicle speeds
are inappropriate, in particular
when events or activity are taking
place,” a city council report said.
The installation of the speed
bumps and warning signage will
cost $13,500.
Dalziel questions Gaiety Hall work
• By Julia Evans
AKAROA’S GAIETY Hall is
closed for more upgrades.
However, questions are being
raised over why $215,000 in
maintenance work was not
done at the same time as its
earthquake repairs.
The 139-year-old Italianate
theatre has been closed since the
start of the month and will open
in February. It
was reopened
in 2016 after its
initial quake
repairs.
Mayor Lianne
Dalziel said it
felt like “deja vu”
Lianne
Dalziel
and requested
staff investigate
why the work
was not done together.
“’I think we should follow up
on that because it sounds like
deja vu all over again, we’ve
already learned that lesson from
the SCIRT mechanism,” she said.
Ms Dalziel said there should
have been an attempt to
amalgamate the two projects.
City council programme
manager heritage Richie
Moyle said during 2015 and
2016, earthquake repairs and
strengthening was carried out.
This included a significant
amount of maintenance to the
building.
“At completion of the
earthquake work, the heritage
team prepared a future
maintenance report, as we do on
most buildings,” he said.
“This highlighted maintenance
that would be needed over the
next five years. This included
a roof replacement and
weatherboard repairs.”
City council community
facilities specialist Paul
McKeefry said the work was
“routine maintenance” that
was necessary for all heritage
buildings.
“Like all great heritage
buildings, the Gaiety needs a
little extra attention when it
comes to routine maintenance,”
Funding injection
for Coastal Pathway
THE LONG awaited
Coastal Pathway is one
step closer to being
completed with a $200,000
grant from the Rātā
Foundation.
The 6.5km walking and
cycling track, launched
in 2012, will stretch from
Ferrymead to Scarborough
Beach via Redcliffs and
Sumner.
The city council recently
approved the final stages
of the project, which will
connect Shag Rock to the
Sumner Surf Club.
The pathway is expected
to be finished by August.
The grant will go
towards enhancing the
pathway with signage,
seating, picnic tables,
memorial areas and places
for bird-watching.
Coastal Pathway Group
treasurer and Linwood-
Central-Heathcote
community board
member Tim Lindley said
support for the project had
been “outstanding.”
“We’ve had lots of great
feedback from people
MORE FUNDING: The Rata Foundation has
donated $200,000 to the Coastal Pathway.
using the pathway. We
see cyclists, families walking
along it, and parents
teaching their kids how to
ride their bikes on it,” he
said.
“Often, people want
to go out and do things
and they go ‘let’s head to
Hanmer or Castle Hill’ but
they just can’t get there.
This pathway is right on
our doorstep . . . It’s an
amazing asset.”
He said the pathway
would coincide perfectly
with the relocation of
Redcliffs School from its
original site on Main Rd to
Redcliffs Park.
“The road that connects
Sumner to Redcliffs is
a minor arterial, which
means it’s a heavy traffic
route. Having this pathway
means that children can
walk or bike to and from
school safely.”
Trust (BHU) is happy to see
a surge in enthusiasm for
organic food production
as younger generations
become more aware of
environmental concerns.
He says the growing
popularity of organic
production in recent years
means that graduates are
now taking what they have
learned into a broader
range of sectors.
“It’s not just about
growing, wholesaling
and retailing food anymore. They’re
going into schools and teaching primary
and secondary schoolers about the
importance of sustainable farming and
gardening and really starting to embed the
philosophy into the education system.”
As far as conventional agricultural
practices are concerned, he says farmers
should be encouraged to optimise their
production, rather than maximise it at the
expense of the environment.
“We need to change our agricultural
paradigm and re-evaluate our priorities.”
Mr Martin says those interested in a
career in organics should enrol in the
one-year Diploma in Agri-Food Production
course, which is open to students either
with or without university entrance.
Introduced last year, it includes Tikanga
and Mahinga Kai components and can
lead to employment in organic primary
production or other sectors related
to organics, especially education and
hospitality.
“The course offers a good grounding
in the principles of organic agriculture,
teaching the philosophies and histories
of organics and providing practical
knowledge of how they are applied,” Mr
Martin says.
Apply now for the Diploma in Organic
Agri-Food Production and begin studying
in February 2019.
Grow a career
in organics
Lincoln University’s Diploma in Organic Agri-Food Production will prepare
you for work in the organic sector or your own garden or smallholdings. It’s
a full-time, one-year programme that covers the theory and practice behind
contemporary organic agri-food production.
Join us in February to find out what growing organically on an agricultural
scale really means.
Our People
Filling gaps
Gap Filler has led more than 80 projects to make the most of vacant sites
in the central city, including the Dance-O-Mat, Super Street Arcade and
book exchange. Co-founder Ryan Reynolds talks to Julia Evans about his
earthquake refugee cat Mario and how the initiative was created
Tell me a little bit about yourself?
My partner Coralie and I live in
Lyttelton. She was nine months pregnant
the week before we moved. She’s one
of the Gap Filler founders and ran the
organisation for the first few years. We
lived in Addington after we lost our house
in the February 22, 2011, earthquake. We
have always been central city people, but
when we lost that place, we ended up in
Addington for a number of years. Then we
had a baby on the way and we decided to
move to Lyttelton. I grew up in the United
States so all of my family are overseas and
Coralie grew up in Australia, so all her
family is overseas, and Lyttelton is just
the sort of place with a reputation that
preceded it where people look out for one
another. Now we have a three-year-old
daughter and a 14-month-old son.
I hear you’ve adopted an earthquake
refugee? How did your cat Mario come
into the family?
When the house we were living in on
Worcester St, a couple of blocks from
the Cathedral, fell over it was inside the
cordon. A couple of weeks later, we tried to
salvage some of our stuff out of the house,
possibly illegally. He’d been hanging
around in our backyard for a couple
of months before the earthquake. We
wondered if he was one of the neighbours’
cats. When we went back to the wrecked
house, he was there hanging around the
rubble, all covered in dust and it looked
like he hadn’t eaten in a couple of weeks.
We were staying with some friends who
had a small townhouse in Spreydon, so we
turned up with this cat. We said: “Sorry, I
know we don’t have much room, but hope
you don’t mind we’ve got a cat?”
How did you go from electrical
engineering to theatre and film?
Electrical engineering, as it was taught
at my university in the US, was actually
a very creative discipline. It wasn’t a
word that they ever used at all, but it
was a lot of small group work in the lab,
dreaming up things you might be able
to design and build and testing things
out on paper, then test circuits and when
you hit something that seems workable,
you take it out into the real world. So I
got a lot of opportunities as a student to
dream of crazy things and work with a few
friends from start to finish on a project.
I loved that. Then towards the end of
the degree, myself and all of my friends
were being recruited by giant multinational
corporations, which have really
strong recruitment programmes. I was
going to be an aerospace manufacturer,
which made military planes, and I had
other friends ending up with really
huge companies. I moved to Texas for
an internship experience and was at a
facility where they built military planes.
There were more than 30,000 people that
worked there. That kind of romantic thing
of working in small groups, thinking
up projects and seeing them through
from start to finish is just not the truth
of working in a company like that. I was
young and stupid and freaked out, so I
decided to run about as far away as you
could and that was to New Zealand.
So you came to Canterbury University?
I ended up doing an exchange in the
final year of my engineering degree.
I picked New Zealand because it was
far away and no one else was coming
here. So Canterbury University was also
an engineering university. In the US
tertiary system, everyone needs to get
some arts points, even if you’re getting
an engineering degree. When I got to
Canterbury, I didn’t need any more
engineering credits, so I got involved in
various arts and humanities. The theatre
and film studies programme was where I
landed, they offered me a post-graduate
position and I never looked back.
What’s your favourite film?
Probably Fellini’s 8½ still, although I
haven’t seen it in a long while.
I bet you get really sick of people
mentioning a certain Hollywood movie
star you share a name with?
Burt Reynolds! Yeah, it’s a shame about
him dying and all, that’s who you mean,
right? Okay, he’s the bane of my existence.
How did Gap Filler come about?
It was started up after the September 4,
2010, earthquake. Coralie was working
at the Arts Centre, running the artistin-residence
programme, and the Arts
Centre made a really quick decision when
the buildings were badly-damaged to halt
all of their public programmes, so she
was made redundant almost immediately.
I was employed at the university at that
time, so we were in a really fortunate
position to say, don’t rush into anything,
take a bit of time and see what happens. I
think it was really Coralie wandering the
city and seeing gap sites where buildings
had been demolished and who knows
how long they would be empty for. They
were all of our social gathering spaces,
the cheap and cheerful restaurants, the
amateur dance studios in the upper
floors, the cultural life of the city had
really been damaged more than the
infrastructure in that September quake.
So all credit to Coralie for hatching the
idea for what became Gap Filler. We lost
our house in the February quake and just
about everything we owned. The scale of
the disaster was so big. We put out the
message on Facebook – that’s the end of
our Gap Filler experiment. But a bunch of
people got in touch saying, no, all of the
cinemas in the central city are closed, so
you need to do an outdoor cinema project,
the libraries are closed, so let’s do some
sort of book project. For the next year
and a half, everything we did was pretty
much someone else’s idea that we helped
facilitate.
What’s your favourite Gap Filler
project so far?
They’re all so different. I really love the
Super Street Arcade project, the giant
arcade game on Tuam St. That’s been there
for two years, it still gets 300 games played
every day. Hopefully we might have one
going in in Melbourne early-mid next
year and I think that would get a lot of
attention. So that’s definitely a favourite.
Every time I cycle past and see the look on
people’s faces discovering it for the first
time it is pretty priceless.

February
start for
goods shed
restoration
• By Julia Evans
THE $250,000 restoration of
the Little River Goods Shed is
expected to start in February.
City council capital delivery
community manager Darren
Moses said work on the heritage
building, dating back to 1886,
would take seven months to
complete.
It includes replacing the foundations,
as well as earthquake
strengthening and painting.
However, before work begins
there would be an archaeological
investigation held at the site.
“Archaeological monitoring
with take place at the beginning
of the site’s redevelopment and
continue until excavation is
complete. A date for this has not
been set,” Mr Moses said.
Mr Moses said a building consent
exemption was applied for
and granted, which had saved on
the cost.
The Little River Railway Station
and Goods Shed is one of
the oldest surviving stations
around the country.
It was part of the Lincoln-
Little River railway.
Showcasing rare marine life
THIRTY MINUTES of
highlights from 75 hours of
undersea footage showcasing
some rarely recorded fish
species is now playing in Akaroa
Museum.
The footage was recorded by
the Department of Conservation
in February last year, using
baited underwater video
cameras while monitoring fish
populations in and around
Banks Peninsula’s two marine
reserves – Akaroa and Pohatu.
It was the first time the baited
underwater video camera
method had been used on the
east coast of the South Island.
Museum director Lynda
Wallace said the museum is
excited to share some of Banks
Peninsula’s marine life with
locals and tourists.
“The footage will play
continuously on a big screen in
a dedicated space, the museum’s
green room, allowing visitors an
immersive and quiet experience,”
she said.
“The history of Akaroa’s
harbour-based industries is
told in the neighbouring gallery
and the underwater footage is
a perfect complement to those
stories.”
DOC marine ranger Tom
MacTavish said the research
team were originally hoping to
develop a better understanding
as to how the two marine
reserves were influencing fin-fish
populations.
“Starting purely as a science
project, we soon saw the diversity
of marine species visiting our
baited cameras and realised
this footage offered a unique
opportunity to peek into Banks
Peninsula’s undersea life and
connect Canterbury people with
Relief following mail theft arrest
• By Anan Zaki
DIAMOND Harbour residents
are relieved after an arrest over a
string of mail thefts.
A 36-year-old woman was
arrested by police for the thefts
on Monday.
Diamond Harbour chief fire
officer and former policeman
of 34 years,
Bob Palmer
welcomed the
news of the
arrest.
“It’s certainly
taught people
to keep an eye
Franco Lovrich
out for things,
which is always
a good thing,”
Mr Palmer said.
Diamond Harbour
Neighbourhood Support deputy
coordinator Emma Gallagher
said residents should remain
vigilant in spite of the arrest.
“It has put everybody on
edge, it’s a bit of a close knit
community so it makes you feel
a bit vulnerable when you hear
stuff like that going on,” Ms
Gallagher said.
Police said the woman allegedly
stole mail over several months
and used stolen credit cards from
the mail to purchase groceries,
cigarettes, alcohol and petrol.
She was brought into custody
after a search warrant was
carried out in Diamond Harbour
on Monday morning, Lyttelton
Police Sergeant Lovrich said.
More than 70 pieces of stolen
mail were recovered from the
search warrant.
The woman is facing charges
relating to fraud, receiving stolen
property and drugs and will
appear at district court on Friday.
Bay Harbour News reported
earlier this month that Diamond
Harbour was experiencing its
worst crime wave in the last 20
years.
Sergeant Lovrich said most of
the woman’s alleged offending is
believed to have taken place in
Diamond Harbour.
However, he said there was
some mail from Allandale,
Charteris Bay and Governors
Bay.
He said there was a lot of
publicity in the lead up to the
arrest and police received more
reports recently.
It was unclear if the woman had
knowing that someone has been
Sergeant Lovrich said.
Police will be returning the
it was too early to determine a
Trial to
stop drain
flooding
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
A NEW flood prevention
measure may be trialled in
Sumner to stop a drain from
filling up when it rains.
The city council is looking at
placing a temporary groyne at
a Burgess St outlet to prevent
flooding on the street during
heavy rain. The temporary
groyne would aim to artificially
lower sand levels on one side
which, if placed next to an
outlet, may help clear it.
But city council land drainage
manager Keith Davison said
while staff are looking at the
trial on Burgess St, there is no
firm plan at this stage.
If the trial is successful,
the city council may look at
expanding it to the Southshore
estuary.
Questions have been raised
over if the trial was successful in
Sumner, whether it would have
the same outcome at the estuary.
The report said while natural
tidal effects are expected at
Sumner, there is no certainty it
will work at drain outlets in the
estuary.
Thank you for your support over the year!
A ‘gold mine’
of footwear
for all ages
The Footwear Factory in Garlands
Road Woolston has been a part of the
Christchurch retail scene for more than a
quarter of a century.
Over that time thousands of people have
flocked to the store to find bargains and
good deals in quality footwear, ranging from
children’s shoes, sandals and school shoes
to men’s and women’s fashion and causal
shoes, outdoor and sports shoes, bowls
shoes, slippers, and safety footwear for the
workplace.
Launched in a small shop in Papanui, the
business later operated in Riccarton for 12
years before moving to Garlands Rd 15 years
ago.
Owned by Russ and Jude Day, there you
will find shelves lined with footwear in a
huge variety of styles and colours for men,
women and children – a ‘gold mine’ for shoeseeking
shoppers.
The footwear is brought in from all over
the world, as well as coming from New
Zealand manufacturers, and includes ends of
lines and other well-priced items.
Four main brands are carried – the New
Zealand made McKinlays range of children’s
school shoes, as well as men’s and women’s
styles. The well-known Hi-Tec range of
outdoor footwear and tramping, New
Balance sports shoes and a range of Keens
sandals and outdoor footwear. These known
brands cover all ages.
New styles arrive almost every day, so
there are always more to try on, while Russell
and his second-in-charge Karen are happy to
advise on styles and sizing.
Located on a high-profile site at 47C
Garlands Rd, (next to Flags Tyre’s), the
Footwear Factory is easy to find, and there is
off-street parking available.
They are open seven days a week –
Godley House
site could
be reclassified
• By Julia Evans
THE SITE of Diamond
Harbour’s Godley House may
need reclassification
The city council’s parks
team is looking at the legal
classification of the site, which
is currently under the recreation
reserve classification.
“The Reserves Act
classification allows for public
recreation activity and, where
they support the main activity,
commercial facilities such as
cafes,” city council head of
parks Andrew Rutledge said.
However, it does not allow for
many of the developments the
community wants to see.
The community has been
proposing uses for the site
since 2012. They have included
a permanent cafe building
along with an indoor/outdoor
performance space and shifting
the library to the site from its
current location beneath the
community hall.
City council staff will brief the
Banks Peninsula Community
Board on February 4 about
options for the site.
Staff will also propose how to
engage with the community to
determine if a reclassification is
supported.
Plenty of value in a power nap
JUST UNDER a month in to my
stay-at-home-dad career and I
have a new appreciation for two
things – parenting full-time is way
more tiring than I thought and I
need more hands.
Mostly for Vittoria’s Saturday
swimming lessons.
She’s amazingly confident in the
water and it’s awesome watching
her confidence grow.
Before I became a full-time
parent it was our main daddy/
daughter time, so it’s special for
us. However, as she’s got more
mobile, showering and changing
has become a challenge.
Hence the need for more hands.
If my wife Laura is free, she’ll
tag along to watch the wee mermaid
in action.
Having her there is a big help
as she can dress Vittoria while I
shower and change.
On Saturday morning, I decided
to let Laura sleep in after a
busy work week. But, boy, did I
miss her at change time.
Wee one was already yawning
mid-way through so by the time
we got to the shower she was
grumpy-as and letting everyone
know about it.
The poor lass was just ready for
her bottle and a nap and here’s me
washing her, drying her, dressing
her and then trying to do the
same for myself? What a monster.
To save extending the meltdown,
and bring her back to her
smiling self, I just went home in
my wet togs, wrapped in a towel.
It might not seem like
an embarrassing situation,
but try it out while you’re
half-naked, soaking wet and
VITTORIA
& Matt
in front of much fitter looking
strangers.
As for my fatigue levels, I was
never one for a sneaky workplace
nap and after work I used to stay
up to make the most of my home
time. Now I’ll often nap during
the day and still be yawning for
Horror of discovering Scott’s body
Fire rages, homes at risk
MORE HAS been revealed about
an Antarctic expedition which
ended in Lyttelton in February
1913.
Canterbury Museum has
acquired two diaries written by
Captain Robert Falcon Scott’s
Norwegian skiing expert,
Tryggve Gran.
One diary, written in Norwegian,
is an account of the
expedition from November 7,
1911 to February 25, 1912.
The other, in Gran’s imperfect
English, covers the period until
the expedition returned to
Lyttelton, in February 1913.
In the second diary, Gran describes
his horror at finding the
frozen bodies of Scott, Edward
Wilson and Henry “Birdie” Bowers
on November 12, 1912, more
than seven months after they
died returning from the South
Pole.
“I will never forget it so long I
live, a horrible nightmare could
not have shown more horror than
this,” Gran wrote.
“The frost had made the skin
yellow and transparent and I’ve
never seen anything worse in my
life. The Owner (the men’s name
for Scott) seems to have struggled
hard in the moment of death,
while the two others seem to have
gone off in a kind of sleep,” he
wrote.
HISTORY: Canterbury Museum has acquired two diaries written by Captain Robert Falcon Scott’s Norwegian skiing expert
Tryggve Gran which reveal his horror at finding Scott’s body.
Scott’s group had set out in
October 1911 to become the first
people to reach the South Pole.
They made it to the pole on
January 17, 1912, but discovered
the Norwegian explorer Roald
Amundsen had beaten them
there by 34 days.
On their return journey they
were plagued by severe weather,
which slowed their progress and
caused their food and fuel to run
out.
Gran, who Scott had employed
to teach the other expedition
members to ski, was one of a
group of 11 who set out to find
the party including Scott, after
they failed to return from their
journey to the pole.
The last entry in Scott’s own
journal, which Gran read after
discovering the bodies, is dated
March 29, 1912.
The museum plans to scan and
digitise the English-language
diary early next year, when the
diaries arrive from London
where they were purchased.
The digital version will be
available on the museum’s
website.
Sprinkler torpedoes one-day final
Match
now in
January
• By Gordon Findlater
HEATHCOTE’S one-day
championship final against
Merivale Papanui was rained off
on Sunday.
But no rain fell at Heathcote
Domain.
A mistake with the ground’s
sprinkler system meant the
irrigation came on in the early
hours of Sunday morning, leaving
the ground drenched and
unplayable when the game was
due to begin at 10.30am.
“The council went in and did
some work on Friday. They went
into our toby box and changed
the settings on our sprinklers, so
on Sunday morning they went
on when everyone was tucked up
in bed,” said club captain David
Stack.
When both teams arrived at
Heathcote Domain it quickly
became apparent that no cricket
was going to be played on the
drenched field.
“We tried for a few hours to get
the pitch up to scratch but it was
just way too wet, there were still
SATURDAY SESSION: While the one-day match was called off, Heathcote completed a win in
the two-day competition on Saturday thanks to an 11 wicket haul from Marek Bungard.
puddles out there,” said Stack.
With Heathcote wanting
to play the final at home and
Merivale Papanui wanting to
move the match to their ground,
a decision was finally made to replay
the match at Heathcote at a
date to be confirmed in January.
After being understandably
sombre with the situation the
mood of both sides was lifted
when they headed to the Valley
Inn Tavern for some very premature
post-match drinks at noon.
“We wanted to do a boat race
at the pub to decide the title
but the Papanui Merivale guys
weren’t so keen,” said Heathcote
bowler Ben Cochrane.
The Heathcote team then spent
their afternoon playing backyard
cricket before returning to the
Valley Inn for dinner.
Surprisingly it’s the first time
the sprinklers at Heathcote have
gone off the morning of a major
game. Five years ago a second
grade twenty20 final at Heathcote
was postponed due to an
ill-timed overnight sprinkling.
Sunday’s sprinkler event
capped a weekend where not
a lot of cricket was played for
SPORTS
the premier team. On Saturday
Heathcote bowled East Christchurch
Shirley out for just 30 to
complete an innings and 106
runs victory after Heathcote
scored 245 and bowled East
Shirley out for 106 in the first innings
the previous weekend.
Pace bowler Marek Bungard
added to his 7-22 picked up in
the first innings with 4-10 on
Saturday to complete a 10 wicket
bag and finish with figures of
11-32.
There was also a win in the
two-day championship for
Sumner. They returned to Edgar
MacIntosh Park for the second
day in their match against
Merivale Papanui.
Starting the day with a six run
lead Sumner’s opening bowling
duo of Nawid Mohamady and
Dean Smith picked up three
early wickets to have Merivale
Papanui under pressure early at
42/3. Skipper Dan Vann turned
the game in Sumner’s favour by
taking six wickets for just six
runs.
Merivale lost seven wickets for
just 18 runs to reach a total of 61.
Sumner chased down the
target of 55 but did wobble at
times losing four wickets in the
process.
the R-Design is angry and feisty If you take note of the points
at where the power figures are
developed – 1400rpm for torque
almost meeting the point of
peak power (4700rpm) – then
you can genuinely believe there
is a perfectly acceptable power
delivery.
The feel of turbo boost is
strong and drive through
an eight-speed automatic
transmission is smooth and
controlled. There are also four
drive modes, from sport to
economy, which you can utilise
depending on each journey.
The XC40 drives quietly and
smoothly, and that is a prerequisite
of all cars from the
Volvo stable. I took the test car
on a loop from Motukarara
to Hororata, there are several
tricky corners on that route yet
the XC40 is comfortable in a
corner and handles with all of the
characteristics of the modern-day
SUV.
The XC40 is relatively new to
the New Zealand market and
joins a high-profile SUV line-up
from the Volvo stable.
I can easily see why it has been
seen favourably by the critics,
and that exposure trickles down
to the choices buyers make when
they are looking for a purchase.
If I was an SUV buyer then the
XC40 would certainly be near the
top of my list.

special not to experience in person. Make
no mistake, very motivated owners are
demanding a sale as they are relocating
back into the city for family commitments.
WORKSAFE NEW Zealand
has been a proached in a bid to
fina ly repair the potholes in New
Brighton’s Hawke St car park.
Coastal-Burw od Ward city
counci lor David East wants
WorkSafe to pre sure the car
park’s private owners into
repairing the potholes which are
a “trip and vehicle” hazard.
WorkSafe chief inspector
a se sment southern Da ren
Handforth said it may be able to
take action under the Health and
Safety at Work Act 2015, “as a
person conducting a busine s or
undertaking.”
Mr Handforth said WorkSafe
is aware of the concerns raised by
Cr East abou the car park.
“WorkSafe has completed
an a se sment visi to the site
and is engaging with the owner
to advise them that it is their
responsibility to manage their
risks a propriately.”
Different parts of the car park
are owned by various people
and the Coastal-Burw od
Community Board recently
wrote to them about its concerns
around health and safety.
Cr East said the bi gest i sue
in the past has b en ge ting in
touch with the landlords and
owners and ge ting them to
agr e to anything. “The board
a preciates that multi-ownership
of the parking space may present
a difficulty in co-ordinating
repair/resurfacing but felt obliged
to pa s these concerns onto you,”
said the le ter.
One reply has b en received so
far from an owner who is wi ling
to discu s the i sue. However, a l
the owners would have to agree
to undertake work.
Cr East said there had b en
a “number of incidences” in
the car park of people injuring
themselves which had gone
unreported.
“I’ve always though that it
has b en quite amazing that we
haven’t had any serious a cidents
or senior citizens perhaps
tri ping in those potholes and
doing themselve some damage.”
He is confiden the new
a proach wi l bring results.
“I think the WorkSafe
involvement may prove to be the
lever that we are l oking for.”
THE PAPANUI-I nes
Community Board has taken the
rare step of starting a petition
to figh the city council over
funding.
Signatures are being co lected
in a bid to get funding for a community
facility in Shirley.
It comes after the city council
removed funding for the centre
pla ned for Shirley Rd, near the
intersection with Hi ls Rd. This
was the site of the former community
centre, which was badly
damaged in the February 2,
20 1, earthquake.
The removal o funding
prompted community board
chairwoman Ali Jones to threaten
to stan down, citing it as her “die
in the ditch” project.
Ms Jone said the board’s role
is to represen the community,
and by gathering signatures from
residents, it was fulfi ling that
role.
“One of the roles of a community
board is to represent and act
as advocate for the interests of its
community and this is what we
are doing. The LTP and a nual
plans are a l about lo bying the
THE OWNERS of Sumner’s Cave
Rock Apartments ar expecting the
Earthquake Commi sion to sign-off
on a se tlement agr emen this w ek.
Body corporate chairman Mike
White said the group had gone
into mediation with IAG and EQC
on February 20, and signed off
on a deal with IAG on February
2 – coincidenta ly seven years
to the day after the February 2,
20 1, earthquake. However, they
are waiting for EQC to sign the
agr ement.
“Given that EQC actua ly drafted
the agr ement, there’ l be no
problem with them doing that.”
The apartment suffere damage
late 2012. In 2016, IAG’s offer of the
difference betw en indemnity value,
$10 mi lion, and the sum insured,
$16 mi lion, was rejected by the body
corporate.
The mediation agr ement
prevented Mr White from disclosing
the se tlement amount, but he said it
involved the two parties paying “a bit
more money than they’d wanted to
earlier.”
A CRACKDOWN on mobile
traders acro s the districts could
be l oming.
However, the public has li tle
interest in having input into the
issue.
Only eight submi sions were
received for a potential bylaw
aimed at regulating commercial
activities in public places.
The district council wi l be
holding a hearing for the Public
Places Bylaw and Policy on Commercial
Activities and Events in
Public Places.
A hearing i scheduled to be
held on Thursday.
The bylaw comes as an increasing
number of mobile traders
are s eking t operate in Selwyn,
especia ly during the summer
months.
In the past year, the district
council has received five inquiries
about se ting up a mobile busine s
on private or public land.
A report said there are two
str et operators in Darfield, a
coff e cart is parked beside the
railway in Ro leston, and a pi za
cart visits Lincoln weekly betw en
September-May along with a Thai
f od truck.
Pupils learn about role of war horses
GR ENDALE SCHOOL pupils
have taken a step back in time,
s eing first hand what men and
horses l oked like during war.
The New Zealand Mounted
Rifles Charitable Trust president
Mark A pleton and member
Mike Donaldson t ok their
horses to the sch ol on Monday,
in a bid to educate pupils on the
sacrifice their ancestors made in
World War 1 and World War 2.
Mr A pleton and Mr Donaldson
a rived a the sch ol dre sed
in World War 1 uniforms while
their horses Tommy and Kruze
wore 1 0-year-old sa dles donated
to the trust.
The presentation is a prelude
to the Gr endale Recreation Reserve
Management Commi t e’s
upcoming Anzac Day service.
As a tribute to those who
served, members of the trust wi l
ride horseback to the service.
Mr A pleton said it was
important children were
educated on what soldiers
wen through during World
War 1 and World War 2.
But he said the presentation
didn’t go into t o much detail
and was more of a “show and
te l” to make them aware of what
the soldiers l oked like.
Children were shown the type
of kits horses were required to
wear in the war.
AN U PER Ri carton butcher
has proven himself to be a cut
above his Au sie rivals at an
international competition.
Elite Meats owner Corey
Winder was named in the a l
star team a the World Butchers’
Cha lenge in Northern Ireland.
Mr Winder and his team, the
Pure South Sharp Blacks, which
includes W olston butcher
Jeremy Garth, finished second
in the competition.
He said the cha lenge started
as a “transtasman test match”
seven years ago.
The preparation for this
year’s World Butchers’ Challenge
was intense as the team
members met in Auckland
every two months for lengthy
w ekend practices. Mr Winder
said coming second against 1
other countries was a “fantastic”
result.
“To get second behind Ireland
was a huge achievement and to
be ahead of Australia is an
even bi ger thing for us,” he
said.
But Mr Winder admires the
Australian team.
“Those guys over there
[Australia] are on top of their
game, they do a g od job,” he
said.
“And it just showcases that
New Zealand has got some
of the best butchers in the
world,” he said.
Mr Winder has b en a butcher
since the age of 19.
THE HALSWE L-Hornby-
Ri carton Community Board
has b en given the gr en ligh to
o pose the pla ned qua ry near
Templeton.
Mayor Lia ne Dalziel told the
board on Thursday it had the okay
from the city council to make a
submi sion if Fulton Hogan a plies
for a resource consen to create a
qua ry.
Board chairman Mike Mora
told Western News the submi sion
would likely o pose Fulton Hogan’s
plan.
“You can just about guarant e
it . because we [the community
board] don’t believe qua ries
should be so close to residential
areas,” he said.
Mr Mora said he wasn’t sure if
the city council would endorse the
board’ submi sion.
“I’d like to think so because the
city council has had their eyes
open as we l ove recent years over
the crysta line silica risk,” he said.
Mr Mora said the community
board wi l be “representing and
