KIDS NEVER GET TIRED OF
SANTA: St Nicholas, Kris Kringle,
Santa Claus or even Pelznickel –
whatever he is known as around
the world, Father Christmas has
a place in the hearts of children.
And it doesn’t matter that we
don’t have the snow and other
things associated with Santa in
northern climes, we still love
Santa in the sun and surf. He
visited the children at the
Kenny’s Christmas party, held at
Kenny’s Sports Bar recently. He
arrived by boat on the Kowie
River and didn’t ‘Hyde’ away, and
wa s n ’t ‘Robin’ anyone, but led
the chorus of Christmas songs
that the children delighted in
singing before he handed out
presents Picture: ROB KNOWLES
Young hero receives help from community
Badly burnt fire survivor’s plight
grips the hearts of well-wishers
LENDING A HAND: Good Samaritans met at Vuyolwethu Cotsheni’s home after he survived a fire
that burnt a home to ashes and took two lives. From left are community development worker
Nollie Mani, mother of the fire victim Ntambomzi Cotsheni, Nemato Car Wash member Siya Melani,
Child Welfare representative Lizzy Sandlana and Ward 9 Councillor Mbulelo ‘St wiga’ Njibana. They
are all lending a hand to make life a little easier for the young victim
Ayoung man who risked his life to save his
younger brother from a disastrous fire has so
touched the hearts of members of the
community that they have resolved to keep helping
him as long as possible.
After surviving a fire which took two lives, the
14-year-old boy, Vuyolwethu Cotsheni, continuously
receives various kinds of support as he is gradually
recovering from his burns.
Cotsheni sustained severe burns when he rushed
into a house to help a crying child.
C ot s h e n i ’s plight has led to several Samaritans
keeping a close eye and seeing to his needs.
He still attends hospital three times a week, even
months after the incident took place.
According to community development worker
Nollie Mani, Cotsheni sustained severe burns in the
house fire on May 2.
“There was a house burning. Cotsheni heard a
child crying inside the house and he went in to
rescue the child. The child was saved and is okay
n o w, ” Mani said. Two people, a grandfather and
child, died in the fire.
Had Cotsheni not braved the flames to rescue his
younger brother he too would probably have died.
C ot s h e n i ’s body and head are still covered with
bandages as the treatment continues.
Child Welfare representative Lizzy Sandlana
together with ward 9 Councillor Mbulelo “St wiga”
Njibana and his associates coincidentally met at
C ot s h e n i ’s home at Emgogogweni in ward 8 to offer
their support.
Child Welfare’s support came in the form of food
packages while Njibana and some associates
raised an amount of R1,000.
Sandlana said even though Cotsheni’s situation
was a social development issue rather than a Child
Welfare responsibility, the latter organisation saw
the need to intervene to establish where they could
possibly help.
She indicated that they would follow up on
C ot s h e n i ’s social grant support.
Njibana and his associates were pushed by the
desire to help even though the victim belongs to a
different ward.
Njibana said a woman who is associated with
C ot s h e n i ’s mother told him about the brave young
man’s situation.
“We went to Port Alfred Hospital on Mandela Day
to give Cotsheni some gifts. So when we were at
the hospital we promised to come back again,” he
said.
“On November 1 we did a car-wash fundraising,
selling tickets. We managed to raise this amount of
m o n e y, ” he said.
C ot s h e n i ’s mother, Ntambozi Cotsheni, indicated
that she was deeply touched by the help given to
her son. She was so overcome that she was unable
to even utter her words of appreciation.
Municipality appeals for
wise holiday water use
TK MTIKI
With high water
use expected
as holiday
makers stream in and
residents up their
festive activities, the
Ndlambe Municipality
has called for caution
and has emphasised
that restrictions on
what water should be
used for are still firmly
in place.
The municipality
warned that reservoirs
were critically low.
According to the
municipalit y’s water
notification the
restrictions are as a
result of Eskom power
outages as well as the
drought.
The municipality’s
notice said: “Ndlambe
Municipal area is
experiencing water
challenges due to
drought and Eskom
power outages,
consequently the
reservoir levels are
critically low in all the
areas.”
The municipality
said restrictions
imposed in December
2017 were still in
place. The municipal
water supply may not
be used for watering
gardens, lawns,
grassed areas, flower
beds, sport fields,
bowling greens, golf
greens and fairways,
croquet lawns, turf
wickets or ploughing
fields.
The restrictions
further prohibit
topping up or filling
fountains and
ornamental ponds.
Filling swimming and
paddling pools are
among other restricted
activities.
Water restriction
have also been applied
to washing paved
areas, walls, roofs,
buildings and similar
st ructures.
The use of
Reservoirs critically low, so
restrictions must be heeded
hosepipes for any
activity is included in
the prohibited
activities.
The notice of
restriction went on to
indicate that
sprinklers, drip
systems, automatic
swimming pool filters,
and automatic urinal
flushing systems are
also prohibited from
using the
municipalit y’s water
supply system.
“The connection of a
hosepipe or any form
of irrigation system to
a tap supplying water
from the municipality’s
water supply system
[is prohibited] unless
for the purposes
permitted in terms of
this notice,” the notice
Sewage leak worry in Marselle
Community members say smell is unbearable
N TO M B E N TS H A
MSUTU
Members of the
Marselle
community are
unhappy about a
terrible stench that
comes from a sewage
leak that has remained
unattended for almost
three months.
This follows several
complaints made to the
municipal offices, but
the problem is taking
forever to be resolved
People have taken turns
to complain about the
issue but, to date, there
has been no resolution.
After complaining
several times to the
Ndlambe Municipality
community member
Xolani Moyikwa is
thinking about giving
up on the issue and
letting it be, but
because he lives with
his children he feels he
can’t just give up
without a fight.
“I can’t keep up with
the smell that comes
from that leak,”
Moyikwa said.
“We need someone to
take care of the
problem for us. I have
done my part in
reporting the issue to
the municipality but
“We need a quick
intervention because
our children play in that
area and when its hot
outside we can’t even
leave our windows
open.”
Another complaint
came from Bulelwa
Njajula who also lives
close to the sewage
leak. She agrees with
Moyikwa, stating that
the smell is unbearable
and the leak is next to
pigs that stay there as
well.
“It’s been almost
three months since the
problem started,”
Njajula said. “We have
children that live close
by and we can’t have
such problems,
[particularly as it is]
next to that place where
there are pigs. We also
noticed that cows drink
from that dirty water
when they pass by.
“We have reported
the matter to the
municipality but nothing
has been done yet. All
we want is for someone
to come and attend to
the matter because it is
really starting to
become a huge problem
and it’s a health hazard.
We can’t stay in a place
like this, the smell is too
much for us to bear.”
OPINION
Same old
l aw l e s s
b e h av i o u r
Isaid this two years ago and it’s as true
as ever: every year Ndlambe
Municipalit y’s festive season plan is like
déjà vu all over again.
Public lawlessness starts earlier every
year, and the authorities do nothing about
it. On Sunday December 16 the Krantz
braai area and beach parking lots were
choc-a-block with weekend revellers,
drinking openly in public and discarding
bottles, cans and plastic everywhere.
Most of the revellers come from out of
town and know they can get away with
this behaviour here because it is not
policed.
Going to the beach is not fun when you
have to mind the broken glass in the
parking lot and on the beach itself. Who
wants to take their kids to the beach when
you have to deal with drunken louts and
take the risk of your children cutting their
fe e t ?
We have written about this ad infinitum,
and locals keep complaining, but nothing
is done.
To be clear, there is a law against
drinking in public and it is a provincial
law, not just a municipal bylaw. But
bylaws are nothing to scoff at anyway –
they are also the law.
When the issue of public drinking and
discarding empty liquor bottles on the
beach has been raised by community
representatives at past festive season
planning meetings, the community
protection services directorate has
displayed a schizophrenic attitude – some
years, like this year, they have assured
zero tolerance for that very behaviour, but
other times they have claimed there is
“nothing in the municipal bylaws which
prohibits taking bottles or glass onto
beaches”.
There is a bylaw against littering
though. Municipal officials play with
words and evade the facts.
It is not just the municipality that is to
blame here – the police have also
absconded from their duty to uphold the
l aw.
The constant refrain every year is that
the New Year crowds are too large to
police, as there is not enough manpower.
But what about the smaller groups of
weekend revellers throughout the season,
leading up to New Year’s Day? The police
do nothing about those either.
The municipality keeps harping on
about the public drinking issue being an
“educational process”, yet the ideal time
to do that education – with smaller groups
of weekend revellers – is squandered. If
the police and bylaw compliance officer
did their duties, then word would get out
that this kind of behaviour is not tolerated
so Ndlambe would not be a haven for
drunken partying and reckless littering.
As it is, the situation gets worse and
more unmanageable every year.
On behalf of Selwyn van der
the men at Salem Crossroads
to extend our thanks for the
Christmas gifts that Talk of the
I know it will make Christmas
intrinsically is.
Thanks for
your bravery
A very special thanks to the speaker
who spoke out about substance abuse
and his journey towards recovery at the
health and disability awareness day
held at the town hall on November 30.
He made special mention of the
community psychiatric services (CPS)
he made use of at the time, which
played a major role in his recovery. It
was one of the first public events he
spoke at and because of his openness
about his experiences, he has enabled
other community members to come
forward and make use of the CPS clinic
in Port Alfred. We encourage those who
are currently battling with substance
abuse or any mental illness to take your
health into your own hands and ask for
help.
The CPS clinic is situated on the Port
Alfred Hospital grounds, open weekdays
from 8am to 4pm. If you have a loved
one needing these services and they are
ready to accept help, please contact the
CHRISTOPHER LEACH
Thanks for Senior Shoebox effort
The dust has settled around the
SSS project and now that your TotT
holiday supplement is out, you’re
probably enjoying a well-earned
break. Just wanted to say, in a
formal kind of way, a huge thank
you for the way you took up the
Santa Senior Shoebox idea so
generously and wholeheartedly,
‘Graduation’ was expensive
The parent of one of the little girls
in the “Graduation Best” photo by
TK Mtiki was so excited by the
photo I gave to her.
There was great discussion and
distress at the costs incurred.
The parent is totally
impoverished and lives in a shack
with children and a spouse. The
shack is flooded when it rains,
has no toilet, no running water
and no electricity.
The parent has had their name
down for a house for over 10
years. I took the parent to see the
municipal worker in charge of
housing applications: a wonderful
woman, a fluent Xhosa speaker,
married to an Englishman but
On behalf of Jenny, Liz, Steve
and myself, I would like to
express a huge thank you to all
for the Christmas boxes we
recently received from you.
The community of Port Alfred
and yourselves have been very
generous.
It was a wonderful idea.
No benefit in alcohol use
Respect: please respect
yourself, others and the
environment.
I came across the sight in
the photo on Kelly’s Blue Flag
Beach on December 17 before
8am.
During this season I am
constantly saddened by the
alcohol freely consumed in
public.
I see absolutely no benefit
to anyone except the
A heartfelt thanks to
all for Christmas boxes
manufacturers and traders of
alcohol. Everybody else
suffers, even the consumer
who behaves without
restraint due to the poison in
their systems.
If you cannot have a good
time without alcohol you are
not free at all. Be free –
#alcoholfreefun for happy
communities.
JOSIE GRACE
putting up with donations all over
Tot T ’s office for weeks/months,
motivating the community to pitch
in as well as your TotT team to
support and do what was
necessary – and then reaching an
impossible target of over 300 gifts.
I certainly didn’t believe the
response from the public would be
whose home language is
Afrikaans. She told me that my
worker was one of 10,000 on a list
of people needing housing.
What chance has this parent
got? The parent asked why could
the children not have worn their
school uniform? Incurring costs of
white shoes, white socks, dress
and hair done came to R410,
which could be ill afforded.
I see 15 children which adds up
to R6,100 spent unnecessarily on
clothing, but the parents had to
pay R300 per child which came to
R4,500.
Where is the accounting to the
parents for the money spent for
this “g r a d u at i o n ”?
We will be delivering the
parcels to all our pensioners just
before Christmas and it will be a
surprise for them all.
We wish you all many
blessings over the Christmas
season, as well as in 2019.
Kind regards,
JILL REED, LOAVES & FISHES
SELFISH AND INCONSIDERATE: Reader
Josie Grace took this photo of the liquor
bottles left behind by revellers on Kelly’s
Beach on Reconciliation Day
so overwhelming and I hope lots of
elderly deserving folk are enjoying
their goodies as I write this. The
community-spiritedness of TotT is
impressive.
Well done to everyone
concerned.
Season’s best and warm regards
SUE GORDON
A simple ceremony would have
sufficed.
A postscript is that the little
child arrived home after 8pm,
exhausted and very happy, having
been taken to a teacher’s house
in Station Hill by 9.30am, I am
told. She runs her school in her
garage and feeds the children
from the government feeding
scheme provided through Kuyasa
School.
Being with her, I understand,
guarantees admittance to Kuyasa.
Something is rotten in the State of
Denmark. Even the parent says,
“There’s something fishy”. I agree.
Pets’ boundless love enriches our lives
It has often been said that the true
measure of the development and
sophistication of peoples and societies
lies in how they treat their senior
citizens and their domestic animals.
There seems to be an inextricable
link to the extent that the moral health
and integrity of civil society have a
strong correlation with humane and
caring practices regarding the aged
and our pets.
While horses, birds of many varieties
and other domesticated animals have
established themselves very strongly in
the chain of animal-world species
favoured by man, the overwhelming
leaders in this department are
indisputably cats and canines. The
richness of human existence and
society has been nourished beyond
measure by the invaluable role played
by dogs and felines.
While generally not as overtly
affectionate as dogs, and always much
more independent and easily adaptable
to circumstances that require
self-preservation, cats find a unique
place in the hearts and homes of many
humans.
There is something very special
about the times when these pets
choose to be affectionate – the
resonance and physical vibrations of
their characteristic purring evoke warm
feelings of closeness and wellbeing.
At the same time, part of their
THINK
ABOUT IT
... with Roy Hewett
appealing allure flows from the ease
with which they can show their wild
side, especially when hunting or when
circumstances have removed them
from the comforts of domesticated life.
A cat in the throes of giving vent to its
untamed side when instinctive
self-protection kicks in is something to
behold.
“Man’s best friend” is a supremely
apt description of the animal which
manifests its role on a different level of
devotion and unconditional love
regarding its human masters. It seems
difficult to comprehend the assertion
by animal geneticists that the vast
range of types and sizes of the canine
family evolved, through selective
breeding, from that apex hunter, the
w o l f.
Who can ignore the doleful look from
his dog when leaving him “home
alone”? Equally powerful is the
unbridled joy of the welcoming canine
greeting upon the master’s return.
No dog ever judges its human keeper
on any grounds. Looks, social status,
location and racial classification mean
n ot h i n g .
A well-trained dog epitomises the
very best of obedience, loyalty and
love. These traits, coupled with
exceptional skills, are harnessed by
human masters for numerous
invaluable services to society.
For many couples, cats and canines
substitute for children who have moved
on from the family home. For some they
are the children they never had.
It would be well-nigh impossible to
identify any domesticated animals that
do more for mankind than cats and
dogs. Nature and the sophistication
level of our society dictate that we
cherish and respect them, and that our
senior citizens are given the reward
they have earned.
Wishing every
day of the
À
with success,
happiness and
Masibambane –
‘Taking hands’ for
a better future
MYHOME
On November 27 a summit,
initiated by Simon Matthews,
Walter Biggs and Chester Wilmot,
was held in Kenton to share the
successes a diverse and inspiring
group had achieved in
agriculture, education, sport,
community development and
ent repreneurship.
There were 30 speakers and a
couple of hundred attending. It was a
celebration of success.
The purpose of the summit was to
show what can be achieved when a
group is determined to make a
difference for good. In this case, to
create opportunities for individuals to
develop in their chosen area of
endeavour through mentorship and
financial support. We heard about
what individuals had achieved and
how beneficiaries had been able to
take advantage of the various
programmes to develop sustainable
futures for themselves.
We hope through this initiative that
others will lend their support, either
through providing their skills or
contributing financially. We are
setting up a foundation with
objectives which will promote and
foster for our five pillars of focus. We
... with Simon Oliver
will have clear and objective methods
of selecting, monitoring and
supporting projects.
We have the support of the mayor,
Phindile Faxi, and through the
principles of Masibambane, we will
work with the community, the
municipality and government to
create opportunities for people who
live in Ndlambe. We know that this
road will not be easy, but take
confidence from the successes
achieved so far. As a community
project, we will be inviting everyone to
share their thoughts on how we can
develop our objectives.
If you have any thoughts on how
you can help us deliver on our dream,
please contact any one of the
promoters or you can contact me on
simon.oliver@seeff.com or
082-653-5643. This is a very exciting
initiative and we look forward to
hearing your from you.
Henry Putt Bridge
MUSICAL LINEAGE: South African pop musician Jesse Clegg, son of music
icon Johnny Clegg, displayed his own songwriting talent and unique style
at a concert at Port Alfred High School last Saturday night. About 300
people attended the show, a fundraiser by Friends of the School
Picture: JON HOUZET
It is intriguing to think, if you pause for a moment,
that Putt Bridge, and the large Nico Malan Bridge
on the R72, are the only means of making the
crossing from Port Alfred’s east bank to west
bank, or vice versa.
If ever both bridges collapsed, one would then
have to travel to Southwell, go via Grahamstown
(Makhanda), then back down to Bathurst, then to
Port Alfred, to reach the east side.
The first bridge was completed in 1907, and
named after Henry Putt, the then mayor and
railway manager of the Port Alfred Railways for 26
years.
By the mid-1920s traffic had increased and the
bridge had deteriorated to some extent so that
loads had to be restricted. It was therefore
decided to construct a new double carriageway
bridge of the same span immediately downstream
of the Henry Putt bridge. This bridge was
completed in 1928 and is still in use today.
Talk of the Town 11
N E I G H B O U R LY NOTES
C H R I ST M A S has come and gone, and
we have hopefully been with our
families and close friends, and have
celebrated the Christmas season with
them. This special time of the year
should be enjoyed by all, but please
bear a thought for those who have no
families or, for one reason or another,
have been alone over the festive
season. This area was once known as
the Friendly Coast, and many of us still
smile and say hello to people, even
complete strangers, actions that might
be unfamiliar to those living in the
bigger cities where lifestyle and
pressure often prevent such courtesy. A
smile cost nothing and, you never
know, you just might brighten
someone’s life by simply being friendly.
WITH just four days to go to year end,
may we take this opportunity to extend
our heartfelt thanks to all our
advertisers, contributors (to the letter
pages, guest writers and those who
submit photographs of various
happenings), distributors (especially
our reputable dealers) and our loyal
readers for their investment, amazing
support, participation and ongoing
encouragement of the Talk of the Town
over the past year. We look forward to
tackling the challenges of 2019
t o g e t h e r.
A BIG welcome to all our visitors,
whether you are regulars of simply
visiting our beautiful area for the first
time, you are most welcome to stay and
enjoy everything we have to offer. From
the beach and the beautiful Indian
Ocean, to our game reserves and the
chance of seeing the Big 5; from
historical Bathurst to the glorious Fish
River, we have everything you could
possibly desire here on the Sunshine
C o a st .
WE really want everyone to enjoy the
festive season in Ndlambe, both
residents and visitors. Yet water is a
precious commodity which is in limited
supply here on the Sunshine Coast. If
everyone plays their part there should
be enough water for everyone, and we
can all have a pleasant and relaxing
time while we enjoy everything the area
can provide. Please, therefore, be aware
that strict water restrictions are still in
force in the Ndlambe municipal area. To
establish what is allowed and
disallowed in our area, see the article
on page 3.
ALTHOUGH many people think that
drinking on the beach and getting
drunk around town are “just once a
year” events, and call to “let the people
p l ay ”, the real issue is that many of our
visitors and locals are confronted with
aggressive and unruly behaviour that
can result in harm. Whether it is people
holding loud parties that go on into the
morning on someone’s front lawn, or
being involved in a car accident or
being dragged into the riptide, dangers
are all around us, so please be careful
this Christmas season. Don’t take glass
onto the beach (use rather plastic
containers and bottles), ensure you
take your rubbish with you when you
leave, and be respectful of other
people’s happiness and enjoyment. It
appears you are unlikely to be arrested
or even fined for drinking in public,
even though the municipality has
issued its season plan which includes
zero tolerance for drinking and driving,
drinking in public and taking glass onto
the beaches. It is a yearly occurrence
that someone is badly hurt or even dies
as a direct or indirect result of drinking.
We would also like people to respect
the town itself and not throw rubbish
around but rather pick it up and take it
home with them to throw away there.
Every year the municipality is forced to
spend a considerable amount of
r at e p ay e r s ’ money in hiring casual staff
to comb the beaches and braai areas
and pick up the tons of refuse scattered
about. I have actually heard people say
that they are doing the unemployed
members of our area a favour by
providing job opportunities by casting
their rubbish on the ground. This, of
course, is utter nonsense. Such jobs
last only a few days at most and serve
no one. Rather allow the municipality to
spend this money on housing and fixing
the infrastructure that is so badly in
need of repair, as using money this way
is far more beneficial in the medium
and long terms. Seriously, we want to
see you back again next year, so abide
by the simple rules and let’s ensure we
all have a great Christmas and a
prosperous New Year.
WISHING everyone celebrating a
advertising feature
MultiSecurity – keeping you and your
family safe over the festive season
MultiSecurity is one of the key
companies in the Ndlambe area and is
dedicated to protecting residents and
visitors.
Despite the increased challenges the
private security sector faces daily,
MutiSecurity has put one of its most
productive years behind it.
“We are looking forward to the
results of all the positive changes we
have made. We see a busy year ahead
of us,” MultiSecurit y’s Clinton Millard
said.
MultiSecurity has recently invested a
substantial amount into upgrading the
CCTV infrastructure in the Port Alfred
area. Reported arrests were made due
to the new and improved systems
installed. The camera feed is monitored
by the sophisticated control-room
personnel who have been trained on
the new and improved software.
Alexandria was also equipped with a
camera system, which was installed
along the road to monitor vehicle
movement. This was the Alexandria
Rural Safety Project, with Alexandria
being the first town to have this project
rolled out.
The ability of the system to monitor
traffic both in and out of town in real
time means that getaway vehicles can
be traced and monitored and thus
reduces the chances of criminals
escaping from the scene of a crime.
Also, the system is able to identify
stolen vehicles or vehicles linked to
previous crimes, thus giving
pre-warning of potential crimes.
“Licence plate recognition allows us
to be linked to a national database of
suspected stolen vehicles and assist in
the apprehension of suspected
criminals,” said Millard, who went on to
explain that recently suspected
criminals have already been foiled due
to this system.
MultiSecurity has the largest fleet
and the largest number of response
officers and technical staff in and
around the Port Alfred area.
“We take pride in our team who are
all Private Security Industry Regulatory
Authority (PSIRA) registered and have
entry-level first aid training. Each staff
member is equipped to ensure the
highest standard of safety for you and
your home,” Millard said.
“MultiSecurity would like to thank
our clients, the community, SAPS and
all the Rapid Rural Response members
for all their years of service and for all
your assistance thus far. Nothing would
be possible without your support. Our
involvement with key role players has
allowed us to work closely in fighting
crime in our towns and reducing our
response times immensely.”
MultiSecurity is also affiliated with
Gardmed who assist in medical
emergencies. .This is an obvious
advantage as response times to
accidents or scenes of violence is so
much faster and has the potential to
save lives.
MultiSecurity recently merged with
well-known Port Elizabeth security
provider Atlas Security.
“We are the only South African
Intruder Detection Services Association
(SAIDSA) approved security company
in our area and we offer products from
basic alarms to electronic intruder
detection. Our scope of operation
includes signal monitoring as well as
armed reaction services,” Millard said.
The core values are very important to
MultiSecurity and their aim is to
maintain the high standards that they
have already set to ensure the safety of
the people of the areas covered and
make home a safe place.
“This is not a job, but a passion. We
do not think of it like one views a
normal career one follows – it is not
just a job, it’s a calling,” Millard said.
ON TARGET: MultiSecurity response officers practice at the Port Alfred
Shooting Range which has recently been certified
NEW TECHNOLOGY: Herman Joubert, sales and technical manager at
MultiSecurity, holds one of the new high-res licence plate recognition
cameras prior to installation. These cameras will make it easier to
identify stolen vehicles, follow vehicles from a crime scene or to simply
ensure no strange vehicles are entering or leaving the area

professional musician
Simon Kelly, from
Johannesburg, will be
the resident musician at
Harry B’s in Port Alfred
from December 22 to
January 1.
Kelly started his
professional career at
the Grand Hotel in Port
Elizabeth in 1982,
taking the Friday night
gig. He was then headhunted
by Southern
Sun’s Sunnyside Park
Hotel in Johannesburg,
where many a Joburger
will remember the
Friday night party on
the patio at the
Sunnyside.
Kelly went on to join
the Southern Sun and
Sun international Group
and toured their venues
all over South Africa.
He later formed a
band called Simon
Kelly’s Dinner Club with
some of his top
professional musician
friends that did
functions and secured
top venues all over
Gauteng, including the
Sun City Superbowl.
They still do
occasional gettogethers
to this day.
However, Kelly has
gone back to his roots
as a solo entertainer,
now 36 years in the
music industry with a
vast array of ballads
and golden oldies.
So come and eat,
party, be merry and be
mesmerised by his
powerful, beautiful
voice.
He will be
entertaining patrons at
Harry B’s on New Year’s
Eve too.
Facebook page or call
The ‘Rok and the beautiful blue Baviaanskloof
Volkswagen SA should move into the
travel game next to making vehicles.
T h at ’s because, if you enjoy off-road
work, VW will install you in one of its
new Amaroks, whirl you around on the
most scenic, uncluttered routes of the
Eastern Cape, put you up in the best
accommodation, and teach you more
than a thing or two about driving
techniques – all for a bargain price.
As part of Volkswagen’s Driving
Academy Programme, I was roped in to
the first, three-day test run of its Amarok
Drive Experience.
The big drawcard for
me was we would be
driving the brutish,
top-of-the-range Amarok
3.0 V6 and not my own
4x4.
This offer is open to
anyone who wants to
learn moderate-tochallenging
off-road
driving, dune work and
gravel road driving.
It is part of promoting
the company’s Amarok 4x4 machinery.
As we were flagged off from the
Garden Court Kings Beach Hotel on the
Port Elizabeth beachfront, we knew that
more than 1,000km of extremely
interesting motoring and beautifully
scenic viewing lay ahead of us.
F i r st , we were headed for the huge
Baviaanskloof nature reserve with its
80km of rough gravel passes through
majestic blue mountains and about a
hundred water crossings of the Kouga
River, deep in the bowels of its green
va l l e y s .
We entered it via Hankey, off the N2,
and then Patensie, 36km from the gate.
This area of the Kloof is not known for
its herds of ellies or buffalo, but rather
for the attraction of those mountains
and typical Eastern Cape fynbos flora.
Uphill and down, the road is pretty
rough, with rocks sharp enough to cut
s i d e wa l l s .
Our Amarok’s suspension handled the
bump and grind well. The less
experienced among our group simply hit
the off-road switch on the centre
console and the vehicle did all the rest
for them, even under quite hectic
conditions. I found the vehicle’s descent
control interfered with the braking under
difficult conditions, so
switched it off sometimes.
This 404km stint took us
the whole day and we
were welcomed at
Oudtshoorn’s exquisite
Riempie Estate for the
st o p o v e r.
Day two saw us
stepping briefly into the
Western Cape, with our
route winding towards
George and Knysna.
On our way, though, we took in the
amazing Montague Pass with all of its
fascinating history.
Unfortunately, a massive, devastating
forest fire has incinerated the whole
area and although still spectacular as a
pass, the indigenous forests are no
more.
Then the route up in the mountains
behind George to Knysna took us over
the gravel Phantom Pass via Simola and
down to the Knysna Lagoon.
Lunch is on a paddle steamer cruise
boat which heads out toward the Knysna
Heads/ Featherbed Bay while you
ADVENTURER: Dusty or damp in the Baviaanskloof, Volkswagen’s Amarok Auto
Extreme has it all to take the bump and grind of off-road adventuring
chomp delicious hake and chips or
chicken/beef schnitzels.
Overnight is at the lively Cape St
Francis Resort some 250km from
Knysna on the N2. This afforded us a
good stint of on-road driving in the
Amaroks.
Here we appreciated the power output
and sheer grunt of the V6’s turbo diesel
motor. It hones out a maximum of
165kW and a burly 550Nm of torque.
This translates into an acceleration
time of eight sec from standstill to
100km/h and a top speed of 193km/h.
At the heart of the big wolf – Amarok
is German for wolf – is its eight-speed
automatic/sequential gearbox.
There is a correct gear for every road
ANYTHING THE GUYS CAN DO: Supporting El Shaddai’s Dirty Pineapple Mud Run on Reconciliation
Day were Roxanne Williamson, left, and Sam Solz
situation. If in a hurry, when you hit the
loud pedal, the way the transmission
works through the gears with crisp
urgency is a dream for any good,
appreciative driver.
The top-of-the-range Amarok Extreme
comes exclusively in Ravenna blue
metallic paintwork and has Talca
20-inch alloy wheels. These wheels are
not suitable for Baviaanskloof-type work
and we had smaller diameter ones fitted
with higher profile rubber for our trip.
The Extreme also comes as standard
with front and rear parking distance
control, rear-view parking/reversing
camera, bi-xenon headlights with LED
daytime running lights and side chrome
sill bars with integrated LED lighting to
illuminate the occupant exit area.
Inside you find VW’s “ergoComfor t”
driver and passenger seats with 14-way
adjustment and clad in nappa leather
seat trim covers. The top Amarok also
has the Discover Media satellite
navigation system in addition to all the
climate control and in-car entertainment
features of the lesser models.
A perfect package for this type of trip.
On the third day, one of the highlights
and big action await drivers, with
hands-on work and tuition on dune
driving at the Brakkeduine 4x4 facility
near Oyster Bay.
With SA’s blanket ban on beach
driving, 4x4 dune work is almost
non-existent and becoming an extinct
art among younger enthusiasts.
No environmental laws being
smashed here, as Brakkeduine is a
privately-owned campsite and dam
resort with the dunes some 5km from
the high-water mark.
You spend three hours on the dunes
and in the lush dune forest learning just
how capable the Amarok is and,
probably, how incapable at dune driving
you are!
Thereafter, there is a sumptuous lunch
at the famous Walskipper restaurant in
Aston Bay, before cruising on the N2
back to Port Elizabeth.
Hankering for an off-road excursionto-be-remembered?
Unbelievably, all of this – full
accommodation included, vehicle and
fuel too – can be had for just R7,500 per
person, from the Volkswagen Driving
A c a d e m y.
An ideal way to tally up if you want to
invest in the Amarok Auto Extreme at
R 74 8 , 6 0 0 .

FREE AND EASY ON THE GREENS
It may be called a league, but essentially the Pepper
Grove Pick n Pay Inter-Company Night Bowls League at
the Grahamstown Bowling Club each year is a social
event, maybe even the social-cum-sporting event of the
year in Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown).
Almost anything is allowed out there on the greens in
the evenings under the moon and the floodlights. You
can wear bright clothing – T-shirts and shorts are very
welcome, and company logos on shirts are encouraged.
You may munch away on your hamburger and chips
while play is in progress and you may even swig away at
your beer or lemonade as you watch a fellow team
member roll his or her bowl along the immaculately
prepared greens.
Oh, and if you want to shout some words of
encouragement to a mate on the other side of the
greens, feel free to do so.
But there is one big no-no for participants in the
inter-company night bowls league – you may not wear
shoes or tackies with heels. A strict “flat, heel-less
shoes” policy is in place as the organisers do not want
you to rip up their greens.
The 2019 Pepper Grove Pick n Pay Inter-Company
Night Bowls League takes place between January 22
and March 1, and will be played on weekday evenings.
The closing date for entries is January 14 or once 60
teams-of-four have entered.
The 2019 event will be its 25th anniversary, and over
the years teams have been drawn from local businesses
big and small, university departments, sports clubs,
service clubs, schools and various other local
organisations and clubs.
June McDougall, stalwart of the night bowls set-up at
Grahamstown Bowling Club for many a year, is once
again in charge of its admin, and she will gladly accept
entries or provide forther information via e-mail at
june.mcdougall@gmail.com
BIG BRAAI AT BATHURST
Just 40km from Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown) and
nestled neatly beside the R67 is the Bathurst
showgrounds, venue once again for the annual Bathurst
Ox Braai that attract thousands of mostly young
holidaymakers and residents of the area.
This year’s ox braai, on Saturday December 29, marks
the 27th staging of the hugely popular event. Gates open
at 10am and entry fee is R200 per person and R200 per
c a r.
Entertainment-wise, the Bathurst Ox Braai will boast
several DJs, plus massive central stage, booming sound
system, smoke machines and special lighting.
NO LIGHTS MAY BE BETTER
For a few weeks now the traffic lights at the intersection
in front of the cathedral have not been in working order. I
walked past the intersection the other day and
everything appeared to be working okay.
Only thing is, I didn’t see a single STOP sign anywhere
on that busy intersection. Isn’t that a bit dangerous?
Must admit, though, I was keeping my eyes glued to the
road, what with all the potholes around town!
A WEEDY LOOK AT HIGH STREET
Oh my, oh my, but the section of High Street between
the eastern end of Church Square and the circle below
the old railway station seems to have become something
of a nursery specialising in the growing of weeds.
There are weeds in gutters and on pavements on both
sides of High Street. Being a very busy access road into
the CBD, one would at least think the weeds would be
eradicated instead of being left to grow taller and taller!
DARK STREETS
In recent weeks I have, on a number of occasions, been
part of a neighbourhood watch in the Sunnyside suburb,
a group of residents who perform vehicle patrols during
the night.
One worrying aspect for these patrols is the large
number of non-working street lights throughout
Sunnyside and it’s probably the same situation across
Makhanda.
In fact, on a recent early-morning three-hour patrol,
several entire streets were totally dark, with no working
street lights at all. Try driving along these streets with all
the potholes.
Come on, municipality, do your thing.
TWELVE TEAMS FOR CRICKET FESTIVAL
Twelve schools’ first teams from across the country and
beyond will take part in the 2019 Grahamstown Schools’
Cricket Festival being hosted by Kingswood College from
January 10 to 12.
Participating schools are Kingswood, Graeme College
and St Andrew’s College from Makhanda, Hellenic
Academy from Zimbabwe, Somerset College from
Somerset West, St Alban’s College and Menlo Park High
in Pretoria, St Andrew’s School from Bloemfontein,
Woodridge College from Thornhill, Hudson Park High
and Cambridge High from East London, and Trinity
House College from Johannesburg.
Seven cricket grounds are being utilised for the
festival – City Lords, Gane and Knight fields at
Kingswood, Lower, Knowling and St Aidan’s fields at St
Andrew’s and Somerset field at Graeme.
The first day’s fixtures on Thursday January 10 are: St
Andrew’s College v St Andrew’s School (Lower);
Kingswood v St Alban’s (Gane); Graeme v Somerset
(Somerset); Cambridge v Hellenic (Knight); Woodridge v
Trinityhouse (City Lords); and Hudson Park v Menlo Park
(Knowling).
Second day’s play on Friday January 11: St Andrew’s
College v St Alban’s (Lower); Kingswood v St Andrew’s
School (Gane); Graeme v Cambridge (Somerset);
Trinityhouse v Hudson Park (Knight); Somerset v
Woodridge (Knowling) and Menlo Park v Hellenic (City
Lords).
Third day’s play on Saturday January 12: St Andrew’s
SORRY STATE: For many decades this restored steam locomotive stood in front of the then busy local railway station building, admired on a daily
basis by passengers, workers and passersby. Then the train service between Alicedale and Port Alfred ceased operating, the station buildings fell
into disrepair and so too the ‘grand old lady’ seen above. Vandalism and weather conditions have contributed to the locomotive being in the forlorn
state it is today – parts missing and large sections badly rusted away
GREEN, AMBER, RED
I was standing on top of the flyover adjacent to the
Kingswood campus the other day and my mind went
back to the days in the 1970s and 1980s when traffic
lights were in place to control traffic flow. Nowadays,
STOP signs appear to be doing the job quite adequately.
CAMPUS CLOSED
For those who may be interested, Rhodes University will
be closed until January 6, re-opening on Monday
January 7.
THE GARDENS COME ALIVE
It was a rather special occasion on Saturday December
15 for Rasayi Mdlankomo and Naomi Nel when they
completed their 100th parkrun in the Makana Botanical
Gardens. And it was even more special for Nel as she
achieved her personal best time on the day when 86
runners, joggers and walkers took to the pathways and
t racks.
First three men were teenager Cee-Jay Porthen (1st in
22 minutes 05 seconds), Scott Jackson (2nd in 22 mins
21 secs) and Kennedy Simango (4th overall in 25 mins 11
secs). Third overall and 1st lady was Terri-Lynn Penney
(23 mins 36 secs), second was Sonia Nel-Laing (32 mins
11 secs) and third was Rosali Smith (32 mins 47 secs).
Those who took part on Saturday, December 15 and
who now have 100 or more parkrun finishes were Stavie
van Aardt – 214; Lynne Henson – 207; Peter Stockwell –
207; Lynne Marshall – 199; Simon Wright – 164; Harry
Porthen – 137; Peter Wentworth – 136; Cee-Jay Porthen
– 124; Susan Wentworth – 123; Mark Hazell – 116;
Andiswa Kaule-Nyakotyo – 115; Rusayi Mdlankomo – 100;
and Naomi Nel – 100.
Parkruns are held at 8am each Saturday from the
entrance to the botanical gardens.
SEEING CLEARLY NOW
I wonder how many present and former residents of
Makhanda had their eyes tested and spectacles supplied
by Charles Brouckaert Optometrist when he had his
practice in the Carlton Centre at 109 High Street.
I was looking through a local publication dated
sometime in 2000 and came across an advert placed by
Charles Brouckaert. I knew him quite well, being my
optometrist at the time and from his golfing exploits
when I was sports journalist for Grocott’s Mail in the
1980s and 1990s.
The last I heard, Charles and his wife had retired to
somewhere along the Garden Route.
While on the subject of spectacles, my very first pair
at the age of 19 was supplied by Hubert Ellis who had
his rooms at St George’s Chambers in upper High Street.
I’m wondering if there is anybody else among the
readers of this column who had spectacles supplied by
Mr Ellis?
CHRISTMAS IN THE KOWIE
It is at this time of year that I have fond and vivid
memories of two Christmas holiday periods with strong
Port Alfred connections.
Not only have Grahamstonians (now Makhandians)
flocked to the coastal town in great numbers for Sunday
afternoon strolls along the beach over past decades,
hundreds have retired to the Kowie, spending the
remainder of their lives in bliss within earshot of the
breaking surf.
Anyhow, back to those two special holiday periods in
the Kowie.
In the early to mid-1960s the Langdon Hotel on the
western banks of the Kowie River used its dance floor to
the fullest over the Christmas period, with rock bands
QUIET TIMES: With the university and local schools having
closed for their end-of-year breaks, numerous
Makhandians (formerly Grahamstonians) already at their
holiday destinations and local retailers taking it easy
after the Christmas rush, the City Hall (left) and
Cathedral spires look down on a quieter-than-usual city
centre. In the background, the 1820 Settlers National
Monument keeps an eye on proceedings below
providing lively music for the regular “sessions”.
Older Port Alfred residents will remember the Langdon
with its dance floor, a couple of metres below the
present-day parking lot.
Between the dance floor and the hotel buildings was a
large lawn that owner Syd Alder crammed with tables
and chairs for patrons.
The resident band at the Langdon Hotel from
mid-December 1964 to about the middle of January 1965
was The Ravens from Grahamstown, of which I was a
m e m b e r.
The band comprised Doug Pashley (lead guitar), Gavin
Reid (drummer and band leader), myself (rhythm guitar)
and Peter Muddle (bass guitar).
The Ravens performed four nights a week to crowds of
bopping teenagers, especially Fridays and Saturdays
when the dance floor was crammed with boppers and
t wisters.
Occasionally I wonder if any of those teenagers are
still around and perhaps remember The Ravens at The
Langdon. By now they’ll be in their late sixties and early
seventies.
Oh, memories!
On a couple of occasions when a ‘larney’ dance band
played at The Langdon to cater for the older folk, The
Ravens moved across the river and played at sessions in
the Lagoon Café, where the marina is today.
And that brings me to another “Christmas in the
Kowie”.
Back in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the day after
Christmas Day was known as Boxing Day, and it became
almost tradition for the Grahamstown Car Club to stage
its Boxing Day Gymkhana on the Lagoon flats close to
the Lagoon Café and the town’s rugby field.
In short, the gymkhana entailed cars of all shapes and
engine sizes being driven around, past and into a series
of obstacles, usually marked by flags placed in empty
paint tins.
The particular gymkhana of which I was one of the
organisers was the one held on Boxing Day 1971. A huge
crowd gathered around the gymkhana area on the flats
on that day in 1971 to witness competing vehicles being
timed over set courses.
I seem to remember that the overall winner that day
MESSY MONUMENT: The Drostdy Arch (or
Drostdy Gateway as some residents refer to it)
on the western end of High Street and leading
onto the Rhodes University campus, is a
national monument. Yet, there are those who
totally ignore this and continue to affix posters
to its walls. Others come along and attempt to
remove the posters, causing a total mess
was a holidaymaker from Bloemfontein, driving a
Porsche. Those were also the days when Anglias,
Cortinas, Renaults, VW Beetles and Minis used to
compete in gymkhanas.
These days, instead of cars competing on the eastern
side of the river, there are a variety of cruising craft in
the canals of the marina.
Oh, memories!

Husband and wife team take
the Gidana Arms Pairs
The Gidana Arms Pairs
annual fishing
competition took place
on Sunday December 16 in
great weather conditions.
The humidity was high, but
never stopped 16 teams of
two competing for top
honours, consisting of
husband and wife teams,
girlfriend/boyfriend teams
and mates.
The sea, although with red
tide and loads of seaweed,
did manage to produce a
number of fish. A total of 36
fish with a combined weight
of 39.6kg were caught and
successfully released.
In third place on a
count-out with Dave Kemp
and Garry Willows was team
Gary du Randt and Clem
Kidson, in second place were
Gerrie Botha and Jeff Hilliar,
and taking top honours were
husband and wife team Terry
and Michelle Stewart with
11.3kg of fish.
Different species of fish
were caught as follows: kob
– Terry Stewart 7.4kg, bronze
bream – Gerrie Botha 1.7kg,
blacktail – Luke Erasmus
1.2kg, klipvis – Adrian
Bezuidenhout 0.8kg, eel tail
barbel – Annie Boon 1.4kg,
Cape stumpnose – D av i d
0.3kg, poenskop – Joshua
de Vos 1.2kg; zebra – Derrick
R e a b o w.
“Our top lady angler was
Michelle Stewart,” Por t
Alfred Rock and Surf
chairman Gary du Randt
said. “Here is a lady that only
fishes once a year and
NICE SIZE: Terry Stewart
with a kob he caught
during the Gidana Arms
Pairs annual fishing
competition
out-fished most of the
anglers as well as her
husband with the total of
edible fish caught.”
Michelle caught three kob
totalling 3.9kg. U16 honours
went to young Joshua de
Vos with 1.2kg of fish, and
the top U21 went to Luke
Erasmus with 1.8kg fish.
“So all in all a fair day’s
fishing was had,” Du Randt
said.
At the prize-giving, Chris
Gidana from Gidana Arms
said a few words and
thanked all present for
turning out and enjoying the
day with him. Gidana also
handed out the prizes to the
selected anglers after which
a sponsored braai was
supplied and celebrations
began.
“I would just like to say a
big thank you to Gidana
Arms for the sponsorship, as
well as agreeing to be our
sponsor for this compo for
2019. Also apologies for any
errors and omissions during
the prize-giving, it will all be
sor ted,” Du Randt said.
“On behalf of the
committee and myself of the
Port Alfred Rock and Surf, I
would like to wish everyone
a merry Christmas and a
happy new year. Until 2019.”
Kowie Bowling
Club
Imbued with the spirit of
Christmas, the Kowie
Hamper played off at
Kowie lived up to the
reputation it established
more than 40 years ago.
Sometimes the
organisers of an event
have to “move with the
times” in order to
maintain support and
interest for their event
but there are events
where the sheer
repetitiveness of the
format ensures its
popularity. The Kowie
Hamper is one of those.
The brainchild of
Cathy du Preez (matron
of the erstwhile Kowie
Psychiatric Hospital) in
the 1970s, this annual
bowling tournament has
maintained its position
as one of the most
popular competition in
this area.
Cathy was a forceful
person who took over a
hospital with 600
patients in a facility
designed for 300 and
also the inevitable
tensions associated
with overcrowding in a
mental hospital. She
recognised the
individual right to
existence of people
whose personal
liberties had legally
been taken away
from them when they
were originally certified
and incarcerated.
Within a year she had
reduced the patient load
to 300 patients, each of
whom had a bed in a
night ward and a
separate place to rest
during the day.
A fanatic about the
game of bowls, she
organised the first
Kowie Hamper round
BOWLSBANTER
... what’s happening
about 1974 and cajoled
players from far and
wide to participate in
her tournament. The
1982 Kowie Hamper was
numerically her greatest
achievement.
With a field of 36
teams, she “borrowed”
a green from Port
Alfred. The format was
two games of 21 ends.
There was only one
prize which was far too
large for what was really
a luck-of-the-draw
situation. Although tea
was served in the
morning, you had to
bring your own lunch –
and yet they came.
The present format of
sectional play was
adopted in 1983.
In more recent news,
we had a surprisingly
large turnout for the
SPAR competition on
December 11.
Rob Owsley, Lester
Scriven, Geoff Gibbon
and Piet Coetser were
the recipients of the
vouchers.
T h u r s d ay ’s turnout
was a bit more subdued
with many holding back
for Friday’s Personal
Trust Trips.
Judy Alexander, Bugs
Wilmot, and Louise
Fleming made off with
the boodle.
When a club is
successful and has
attracted a number of
new members, the older
members like to bask in
the reflected glory of the
club’s new-found
popularity without doing
some in-depth study to
see why it has
happened and what is
required to ensure its
c o n t i n u at i o n .
The success of any
bowling club can be
attributed to a number
of factors. Its location,
the condition of the
playing surface, the
ambience in and around
the clubhouse and
playing area and, how
the facility is run and
managed. A club is a
microcosm of the area
we live in. It starts as a
group of “members”
having one thing in
common – they want to
play bowls!
They are prepared to
accept the “whims and
fa n c i e s ” of their
newfound friends as
long as these
tendencies do not
impinge too much on
their own preferences.
Although they come
together as strangers, it
is amazing how much
common ground there is
for a more lasting
association than just
playing bowls.
This is especially true
of new members who
have relocated to the
coast and, realising that
this is probably their
last move, they are only
too keen on finding
more kindred spirits in
other spheres of
interest. And – it is
amazing what you will
find – there are many
who were large fish in
their own ponds who
are now intent on
being unobtrusive
minnows in their new
surroundings.
At a coastal bowling
club, new members
can be divided into two
categories a) the
established bowlers
retiring at the coast –
their choice of club is
usually related to the
condition of the greens,
and b) the new bowler
looks at the
membership and is
attracted to a club
where he is acquainted
with some of the
members. His interest in
the quality of the greens
only becomes apparent
when he has been
forced to play on
sub-standard greens at
other venues.
With many of our
members enjoying the
company of visitors and
others having travelled
to distant fields, the
attendances have
dropped slightly, except
for the important
international fixture of
Port Alfred residents
against the Rest of
South Africa last
Tuesday. I do not think
that, in the final
analysis, many actually
knew who had won
except that a good time
was had by all.
Our best wishes for an
enjoyable festive season
and new year to all who
have enjoyed their bowls
at Kowie and most
especially to those who
made it possible May all
your wicks end up on
the jack.
Our greens
management team have
worked tirelessly,
throughout 2018 to
ensure that our playing
surfaces remained of a
standard envied by
many in the face of an
inordinately high player
load. To cope with the
level of traffic without
showing wear on the
green, is a major
achievement in greens
management terms and
worthy of recognition
from grateful members.
Although of advanced
age I still buy green
bananas, so it is not
being too optimistic to
look forward to a new
year with TotT. Cheers!

5km fun run at Kelly’s
Beach on Monday
December 17 found
the going tough but
enjoyable as they
battled sand, a little
road running and the
humidity that had
been prevalent during
the weekend.
The race, which
began at 8am, took
runners along the
beach, up and onto
Beach Road and then
back to Kelly’s Beach
and the finishing line.
Proceeds for the
race were donated to
the Port Alfred Soup
Kitchen which feeds
3,000 needy residents
every week – from
children to entire
fa m i l i e s .
This is achieved
through the generosity
of local volunteers, as
well as contributions
of food and donations.
Barry Allen of
Adviceworx Port Alfred
said he was pleased
to be helping the soup
kitchen and by the
number of people who
took the time to come
and support the event
on the public holiday.
“It’s not just locals,
but also a lot of
visitors who
participate in this
event each year,” said
Allen.
The race had prizes
in the field shooting 70.
KGB RESULTS
Tuesday December 11: Early
morning weather serenity attracted a good turnout
of 46 players for the KGB draw on Tuesday. The
field was drawn into 10 four-balls and two
three-balls to play the usual two to count
Stableford alliance. Unfortunately, things did
change during the course of the morning when
fierce easterly winds sprung up causing great
difficulty with respect to club choice and even
standing still while addressing the ball. This had a
major negative impact on results attained.
Nevertheless John Crandon, James Lobban and
Martin Lambrechts carded a great 79 + 5 = 84
points to win the morning proceedings. They were
just one point to the fore of joint runners-up (1)
Richard Farndell, Chris Niebieszczanski and Cliff
Roberts and (2) Len Bohnen, Bryan Connach,
Phillip van der Byl and Cecil Grobler, both covies
carding 83.
Two-clubs were holed by Steve Kennedy and
birthday girl Lynn Lake, both on the par three sixth.
The best nett rounds were shot by Guy Cash (68)
and Ian Gatenby (70).
Friday December 14: A superb turnout of 50
players enjoyed good weather conditions to play
the usual two-to-count Stableford alliance. The
field was drawn into two three-balls and 12
fo u r - b a l l s .
Brian Shirley, Ray Hicks, Derick van Harmelen and
Liz Mangham carded 88 points to win the
competition. They narrowly pipped runners-up
Bryan Connack, Tim Leach and visitors Tony
Manderson and Paula Grobelaar’s 87 by one point.
At the other end of the table Matt Chadwick,
Graham Findlay, Gavin Richards and James
Weisters had only the notorious Hammer en
Sukkel trophy to show for their rather paltry 68
points.
Bryan Robinson birdied the par three sixth, but
Steve Kennedy did likewise on the 13th to secure
R288 from the two-club kitty for his covey.
Tony Manderson grossed a wonderful 76 and Tim
Leach a 79 for the best rounds of the morning.
Good nett rounds were forthcoming from Barrie
Brady (67), Liz Mangham (68), Russell Warren,
Chris Niebieszczanski, Tim Leach (69), Paul Fryer
and Heinz Czepluch (70).
READING THE RULES: Amanda Rathbone, right, tells the competitors at the Dirty Pineapple Mud Run about the route and the hazards they need to look out for
ROB KNOWLES
On a hot and humid Sunday afternoon, with
little in the way of a breeze and the sun
bearing down, the runners, swimmers and
cyclist pitched in their numbers to compete in the
Dirty Pineapple Mud Run, a regular Reconciliation
Day event for the whole family to enjoy.
The Mud Run is hosted by El Shaddai Christian
Academy and the Port Alfred Soup Kitchen and is a
family-friendly adventure consisting of four
fun-filled events, the Mud Run Biathlon, a 5km
run/walk, the Mega Mud Maniacs triathlon and a
mountain bike race.
S u n d ay ’s event took place at the Concor
construction site (about 3km outside Port Alfred
going toward East London), a perfect location for
some muddy racing.
At 2pm, and having been briefed on the route,
competitors young and old lined up to see who
could complete the course in first place.
Alternatively, there was a prize for the dirtiest
mud-runner, and this is something the kids seemed
to enjoy the most.
Event organiser Amanda
Rathbone blew her whistle and the
competitors raced to get to the
water for the 50m swim, more with
ideas of cooling off than to actually
win the race. A lifeguard was on
patrol to ensure no one got into
trouble as they rounded the buoy
and headed back to shore.
Transitioning from their swimming costumes they
continued with a 2.5km run along some of the most
varied terrain that included dry riverbeds, through
thick bush as well as crossing muddy trails that,
because of a severe lack of water in the area,
tended to be less muddy than in previous years.
However, that did not stop Rayah Dollery from
finding and wallowing in the mud she found and, as
a consequence, picking up the prize for the
muddiest competitor.
Also at the starting line at 2pm were the
competitors for the 5km fun run/walk that
meandered through the farm bushveld, following
the jeep tracks through indigenous fauna and flora.
The Mega Mud Maniacs triathlon started at
3.15pm. after the competitors on the first two
events had returned safely back to get their times
and be presented with their medals. This event
consisted of a 300m open water swim (through the
formerly crocodile-infested waters, as Rathbone tells
it), a 16km cycle and a 5km adventure run.
The cycle event started shortly afterward where
cyclists had to travel along terrain that included
narrow single-track to broad gravel roads, sandy
jeep tracks and erosion-damaged
paths. Cyclists who completed
That did not stop Rayah
Dollery from finding
and wallowing in the
mud she found
one of the 8km laps received a
bronze finishers’ medal, for two
laps they received a silver
finishers’ medal, and the
endurance racers who completed
all three laps received gold
medals and the grand prizes and
t rophies.
The results were as follows. First place in the
Mud Run was Mike Nelson in a time of 26 minutes
and 25 seconds. Second place went to Richard
Daniel in a time of 27:20 and third place went to D
Sainsbury in a time of 28:35.
First place in the Mudfish Biathlon was Oliver
Momberg in a time of 21:39, second place to Justin
Dollery in 21:57 and third was Jarryd Harty in 23:18.
All other results are available from Rathbone at El
Shaddai.
Sponsors of the event were Talk of the Town,
“This event would not have been possible without
the volunteers from El Shaddai Christian Academy,
Port Alfred Soup Kitchen, Word of Truth Ministry
and friends, MultiSecurity and Gardmed,” R at h b o n e
said .
“Of course, we cannot forget the wonderful
participants and spectators.
“Lots of fun was had. The camaraderie showed by
the cyclists was awesome as the challenges we had
with flat tires, sandy strips and the heat was not too
much for them to stop and help each other.
Thank you one and all.”
UTTER RELIEF: Nothing could be sweeter than
afternoon heat and humidity, but this years’
winner Oliver Momberg tells the story
