The „Herala“, Kohlgrub‘s local
mountain with its three peaks offers
a wonderful view over the
stops on the Mile of Culture. The
lakes lie at its feet and the alpine
uplands seem like a toy landscape.
On clear days, you can see the
Lech in the West, and the Pilgrimage
Church of Wies points cheekily
out of the wood. The lakes “Starnberger
See” and “Staffelsee” sparkle
on the plane and Munich can
be made out on the far horizon.
„Monastery Rottenbuch „ „Monasticism „
The Abbey of Rottenbuch used
to be an Augustinian canon abbey.
The 11th century Roman basilica
was extended in the gothic
style and decorated in rococo
style by the stucco artist Joseph
Schmuzer from Wessobrunn in
the middle of the 18th century.
The overly opulent stucco work
seems to overshadow allother
architectural forms, the ideas
of Bavarian church rococo have
been realised to their full effect.
Two important abbeys were created
very early on in the Ammergau Alps.
After secularization in 1803, in Ettal,
monasticism awoke to new life in 1900.
There, you can have a look inside the
abbey on a guided tour through the basilica
or the brewing museum and the
distillery. A boarding school in which
the pupils are also taught by monks is
connected to the abbey.
According to the Visitation Report of 1707,
the church was constructed to mark a
„wonderful event“. The holy object of pilgrimage
connected with this was stolen
during the Spanish War of Succession in
1703. The present Holy Blood relic did not
come back from Italy until 1734. Inside the
church, a mixture of Early Baroque, High
Baroque, Rococo and Renaissance is revealed
to the observer.
Bad Bayersoien lies on the
Rottstraße, a once very important
European trading route from Augsburg
to Venice. The Bierlings were
a business family from Bayersoien.
They were officially appointed
to manage the salt deposits and
were the most influential family
in the village for more than three
centuries. On Villagestreet, which
was very busy back then, one can
visit the Museum in the Bierling
House which reports about those
bygone times.
In 1633 the Plague came to Oberammergau.
The church wardens
prayed for God‘s aid, promising
„to hold the Passion tragedy every
ten years“ if the village were to be
freed of the Plague. The epidemic
came to an end and the vow was
already fulfilled in 1634. The first
performances took place among
the village population. In 2010,
500,000 spectators came from all
over the world to Oberammergau
for the plays.
In 1634, the Passion Play were performed
for the first time on a simple
wooden platform in the cemetery. In
1830, for the first time, the stage was
built on the site of the present Passion
Play Theatre. In 1890, a permanent
stage building was constructed
here. In 1900 the audience hall facing
the open-air stage was built, with an
iron-frame construction with six high
arches. The stage was given its present
shape in 1930.
The emergence of the woodcarvingtrade
in Oberammergau dates
back to the late Middle Ages. Due
to the location on the Rottstraße,
a market was guaranteed. In the
18th century, traders from Oberammergau
had already founded
branches all over Europe. In the
19th century, a successful distribution
system was then developed.
In Oberammergau, the woodcarvers
have been organised in the St.
Luke‘s Guild since 1836.
There has been church-life in the Ammertal,
and thus church buildings in
this location, since the 9th century. This
church, built in the 18th century, is one
of the most beautiful village churches in
Upper Bavaria. Renowned artists were
involved in its building and furnishing.
For example, the high altar by Franz Xavier
Schmädl is among his best works.
The crucifix before which the Passion
oath was made in 1633 has been incorporated
into a side altar.
June 1738, the farmer‘s wife Maria
Lory saw moisture in the eyes
of a statue portraying Jesus being
tears. These miraculous tears led
to the pilgrimage to the Church
of the Scourged Saviour in the
“the Wies” near Steingaden. From
1746 to 1754 a unique church was
created for this by Dominikus Zimmermann.
create the ornamentation of the
produced in the last century. The
The Pilate‘s House, dating from the
18th century, received its name due
to the impressive perspective frescoes
of the alpine house painter
Franz Seraph Zwinck (1748 - 1792).
It is probably the most famous
house in Oberammergau and is
important glass-covered picture
Linderhof Palace is the smallest of
the three castles of King Ludwig II.
and the only one completed during
his lifetime. It is regarded as
the favourite castle of the „Fairytale
King“, in which he stayed
by far the most frequently. The
gardens and park are no less impressive
than the castle itself. The
park unites motifs of the French
and Italian Baroque garden and
of the English landscape garden.
Everywhere, the splendid farmhouses
with their flower-decorated
gardens and artistic paintings
bear witness to the spa‘s Bavarian
roots. The cure tradition, which
has grown since 1870, and the
permanently reclaimed mountain
pine high moor have made this
place one of the top addresses
for people seeking healing
and recovery – a garden of Eden
for health and holistic living.
In gratitude for the private special
performance of the Passion
Play in 1871, King Ludwig II. gave
the people of Oberammergau this
crucifixion group monument made
of marble from Kehlheim. This 58-
ton sculpture was produced by the
Munich sculptor Prof. Johann Halbig
and dedicated on the 50th birthday
of the mother of King Ludwig II.
of Bavaria on 15th October 1875.
This museum, opened in 1910, is
one of the most important culturalhistorical
museums in Bavaria.
People have been carving wood
in the village for more than 500
years, so the collection shows a
wide variety of selections of art
and craft from the 17th century
to the modern age. Famous cribs,
children‘s toys, classic figures of
Oberammergau, but also modern
sculpture, historic films and special
exhibitions make a visit an interesting
experience.
In the Ammergau Alps, tradition
and customs are closely connected
with each other and deeply
rooted. Here, tradition is still alive.
The highlights in the year include
among others the Leonhardi Ride
in Unterammergau, the King Ludwig
Fire in honour of the Fairytale
King, Corpus Christi processions,
the traditional Star Procession
and Star Singing on New Year‘s
Allow yourself to „slow down“
with a pleasant gondola journey
on the nostalgic Laber cablecar in
Oberammergau. The Laber, local
mountain of Oberammergau, is at
1.684 m not necessarily one of the
highest peaks in the Bavarian Alps,
but certainly has some of the best
views. As if from a balcony you
can see far across the foothills of
the Alps, with their many lakes,
and in good weather you can even
see over Munich.
Up to the beginning of the 19th
century, Sun dials were the only
clocks people knew. Sun dials
are now used mostly to decorate
buildings and squares. Several
special examples (inc. a cartwheel
sun dial and a globe sun dial), produced
with the necessary astronomic
knowledge and pronounced
craftsmanship of the master
stonemason Karl Kunert, can be
admired in the small spa gardens.
and meditation, under the sign of
the Burning Heart. The meditation
trail extends for 87km in 15
parts, which are also suitable for
day trips, from the Wies Church
to Linderhof Castle. In 2010, the
meditation trail was extended by
six stages through „the Blue Land“.
Thanks to this, the trail can now
also be travelled as a round trip.
The alpine mountain pine upland
peat of the moor spas Bad
Bayersoien and Bad Kohlgrub is
a valuable natural remedy that
helps with gout, joint pains and
hormonal disorders. This natural
medicine is also called „schwarze
Daune“, black down. Since the
end of the 19th century, it has
been dug out fresh daily and
prepared for the guests as peat
baths. Among others, the Tsar
of Russia was also a guest here.
