Warm, welcoming atmosphere at Cancer Center
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Messenger Editor
As a continuing partner with the James
Cancer Network at The Ohio State University,
Madison Health is opening a new Cancer
Center on the second floor of its
expansion.
The center features 10 infusion stations,
including two private rooms. Each station is
equipped with a television/computer with
access to the Internet. Floor to ceiling windows
flood the area with natural light and
give patients views to Main Street and Park
Avenue.
“The natural light is amazing. During
the design phase, it was the one thing I
would not budge on. I wanted it to be a
cheerful place,” said Leanne Manring, RN,
the center’s director.
The chairs in the open area are set up to
allow patients to chat with one another, if
they choose. Curtains are available for those
who desire privacy.
“What I wanted to keep from the old
building was the sense of community,” Manring
said. “Some of our patients really like
socializing, being able to talk to one another.
We’ve had a lot of friendships develop here.”
In addition to comfort, the new Cancer
Center offers convenience when it comes to
location. Previously, it was located at the
back of the hospital. Now, patients can park
right in front of the center and take an elevator
to the second floor.
With twice the space of the hospital’s former
cancer center, the new facility includes
two exam rooms, a consultation and conference
room, office space for care providers,
two nurses stations, and room for family
members to accompany their loved ones
during treatments.
“One thing that resonates with anybody
who goes to Madison Health is that everything
is done with the patient in mind. The
new cancer center certainly replicates that
philosophy,” said Candace Dark, director of
outreach and network development at the
James Cancer Network. “The center is a
new, comfortable place for patients going
through one of the most difficult times in
their lives, and it’s also a functional space
for staff.”
The center’s on-site staff represents
many years of combined experience in cancer
care. All of the nurses are oncology certified.
Additionally, through a partnership
started in 2014, oncologists from The Ohio
State University Comprehensive Cancer
