Man seriously
injured after
tractor ignites
• By Anan Zaki
A MAN was taken to hospital
with smoke inhalation after
a tractor fire near Leeston on
Sunday.
Two fire trucks from Leeston
and Dunsandel were called to a
property on Allens Rd at about
1.55pm.
Firefighters saw a middle-aged
man sitting on grass near a shed
where the tractor was stored.
He was taken to Christchurch
Hospital in a serious condition, a
St John Ambulance spokesman
said.
The shed was not
damaged from the fire, Leeston
chief fire officer Lloyd Clausen
said.
“It was contained in probably
about 10 minutes,” he said.
“The initial call was that there
was a tractor inside a shed and
we expected to see the shed fully
engulfed in flames. But luckily it
was just the tractor.”
The cause of the fire was
unknown at this stage, he
said.
The tractor had not been
used for four days when the fire
started.
Library ready for more users
• By Emily O’Connell
AMONG THE new
developments in Tai Tapu is
a historic building that needs
people – the library.
The library, which has a long
history in the area, was opened
at its Old Tai Tapu Rd site in
1932.
Head librarian Marian
White is wanting more people
to make the most of the library
and says it could be used as
a meeting place for different
groups, such as a children’s
play group or craft group.
“We just thought we’d like
to let people know that the
building was available for
other things beside being a
library,” Mrs White said.
The library, which is run by
volunteers, has a small kitchen,
a computer, WiFi, a large table
which could be used for craft
work and group sessions and
a big lawn suitable for outdoor
activities.
Mrs White said the library
has a “particularly good”
children’s area and “the best”
collection of non-fiction books
about New Zealand in the
district.
She said it has “at least” 200
books about New Zealand,
from very historic ones to the
latest reads.
Popular genres in the library
include modern and historic
fiction along with children’s
books, Mrs White said.
She said the library has
a lot of “local books and
information” and librarians
can assist people in finding
out more about their family
history.
There is no charge for
people or groups wanting
to use library and it’s open
from 2-4pm on Tuesdays and
Thursdays and from 10amnoon
on Saturdays. Mrs White
said groups are welcome to
use the library outside of its
opening hours.
•If you are interested in
using the library or would
“I dream of a Pacific where this terrible disease has
been eradicated and can no longer cause fear, stigma
and discrimination in families and communities.”
Lorena and three of her children were diagnosed with leprosy.
Lorena says “Although our leprosy could be cured, we knew that
sometimes there can be serious effects from the disease, like
disabilities. I was terrified that more of my children would get sick.
But then the Pacific Leprosy Foundation started its new programme
which gives medicine to the rest of the family so that they are
much less likely to get leprosy. It was wonderful to have that
reassurance! Now I want the rest of the countries in the Pacific
to be able to take part in this programme, but I know that costs a lot
of money.”
Your gift of $35 will provide preventative
treatment for one household contact of a
leprosy patient.
A gift of $420 enables the treatment of an
average household in Kiribati, Samoa or the
Solomon Islands.
