Newest generation
well catered for
Lincoln University Childcare and Preschool
has now been around for 30 years and former
pupils could be bringing their own children
to experience what they had before.
It was opened in 1988 to provide education
and care for the children of families of the
staff and students of Lincoln University,
local research organisations and the Lincoln
community.
The centre has a separate under-two area
that allows the children to play and learn
in a safe and developmentally appropriate
environment.
New under-twos can now also get their first
month free.
All children have a primary caregiver who
is responsible for ensuring that children’s
individual needs are being met, for example
in feeding, settling in and feeling secure in the
centre. Having a primary caregiver enables
infants and toddlers to build a sense of trust
with the people who care for them.
The centre can take up to 12
children on the under-two side
to ensure providing care and
education of the highest quality.
The teachers all have extensive
training and experience in
working with children of this age
group.
Staff are observant and
responsive to children’s needs,
strengths and interests and
promote positive relationships
among children that promote
cooperative play.
Advertising Feature
They also employ good-quality individual
assessment and planning that helps teachers
respond to and build on children’s interest
and strengths.
Each child’s progress is recorded in their
profile books and their individual learning
programmes are recorded there too. Parents
are invited to contribute their knowledge and
ideas for the development of their children’s
learning opportunities.
Children have access to a wide range of
learning experiences that include individual,
small and large groups, based on Te Whāriki
(the Early Childhood curriculum).
Te Whāriki, expresses the centre’s
philosophy, supporting every child to be
confident and competent learners, strong
in their identity, language and culture, and
forming strong partnerships with families.
Backyard Critters
When the caterpillar
becomes a moth
A RECENT find in my
garden was the common
bag moth liothula
omnivora.
The caterpillar of this
species lives within a
tapered silk bag that it
constructs a few days after
hatching.
The larvae continue to
enlarge the bag as they
grow in size, with the bags
reaching 50mm in length.
The silk bags are
camouflaged with small
twigs, bark and leaf
fragments attached to the
external surface.
Bags containing females
have the fragments
placed near the sharp end
only, whereas the more
industrious male adorns its
entire bag with fragments.
The larvae are nocturnal
and poke their heads
and legs out of the wide
end of the bag to feed on
Mike Bowie is an ecologist who specialises in entomology
(insects and other invertebrates). Each week he introduces
a new species found in his backyard at Lincoln. His
column aims to raise public awareness of biodiversity, the
variety of living things around us. Check out the full list of
invertebrates found at http://naturewatch.org.nz/projects/
INSECT: The caterpillar
of the Bag moth
Liothula omnivora live
within a tapered silk bag
that it constructs a few
days after hatching.
vegetation and move along
the branch.
If disturbed, larvae
will retreat into the bag.
During the day, the bag is
attached to a branch with
very strong silk.
Pupation occurs during
winter when the bag is
securely tied to vegetation.
Only the adult males form
wings and fly, while the
females remain in their
bags and resemble a more
larval, rather than adult,
form.
Male moths mate with
females by extending
their telescopic abdomen
through the narrow end of
the bag.
The female lays the eggs
within the bag and dies
soon after.
When larvae hatch, they
emerge from the narrow
end of the bag, sometimes
on silk to disperse in the
wind.
Several parasitic flies and
wasps are known to attack
the bag moth larvae and
pupae.
