THE PREMIER CURRENT EVENTS PROGRAMME
A little less screen time
and a whole lot more
learning!
In the fast-paced world of digital devices and social media,
questions are being asked about this new culture of
constant connectivity. This ever-changing digital landscape
has as many landmines as it does merits. Are our young
people keeping themselves safe? Are they being educated
or just entertained? And, how much time is simply too
much time?
As the Editor of Extra! and a mum of four, I am aware of this
ever-changing digital landscape and the growing statistics
around the negative impact of too much screen time. I’m
proud to present a tangible, engaging resource that is used
throughout schools in Canterbury, Otago and Southland.
Extra! is a premier Newspapers in Education programme
published and produced by Allied Press, owner of Star
Media.
Not only is Extra! engaging and informative but, as a former
teacher, I have ensured it’s aligned to the New Zealand
Curriculum.
An investment
in knowledge pays
the best interest.
Benjamin Franklin
Aimed at children in years 5-10, Extra! encourages them
to be open, interested and informed about what goes on in
the world around them.
A newspaper resource that is enjoyed and supported by
teachers and children alike, Extra! aims to engage young
people in current events, history, S.T.E.A.M projects,
reading, writing, foreign languages and so much more! We
truly believe that having something physical in their hands
makes all the difference! It offers the perfect opportunity
for independent, group or whole class-learning.
Plus, our popular current events and spelling quizzes offer
the chance for academic success to be celebrated.
Teachers and children often tell us how much they enjoy
turning the pages and moving from quizzes and puzzles to
indulging in some poetry or laughing at our tongue-twisters.
Although nothing comes close to the feeling they get when
they open an issue of Extra! and see a piece of their work,
their opinion or their review published in print. This really is
the highlight of my job, the calibre of our young people
never ceases to amaze me.
I look forward to meeting more children and teachers from
throughout Canterbury and bringing you some exciting topics in
2019. These include the 50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing,
Robotics, Myths and Legends, Sustainability, the 2019 Rugby
World Cup, Financial Literacy and more! Most importantly, I look
forward to helping the children of Canterbury enjoy a little less
screen time and a whole lot more learning.
