Mummy-blogger is breaking down
LESSONS, ENSEMBLE, AND AND INSTRUMENT HIRE
REBECCA KEIL describes
herself as “not very vanilla.”
But that trait is what led her to
become an online sensation, that
has brands such as Countdown,
Netflix and Jetstar wanting to
work with her.
The 25-year-old attributes
her online success and
unconventional income solely to
being a conventional, everyday
mother.
Online, Mrs Keil, of Bishopdale,
shares reviews of a variety
of products from nappies to Tim
Tams, helpful tips and hacks,
recipes and ‘her truths’ about
pregnancy and motherhood.
The mummy-blogger has close
to 24,000 Instagram followers,
her posts can receive up to 15,000
‘likes’ and her story posts gain on
average 8000 views.
On YouTube, Mrs Keil has
clocked up more than 1.2 million
views.
But it all began with a blog,
Rocky and Ruby, also the names
of her five-year-old son and threeyear-old
daughter.
In 2015, mummy-blogging was
gaining traction globally and Mrs
Keil spotted a gap in the market
in New Zealand.
She attributes her success to
her candid, raw and authentic
approach to motherhood and
parenting.
“Online, everyone had beautiful
homes, perfect lifestyles and
lots of money, that was what I was
seeing,” she said.
“I was like s**t, why isn’t my life
like this? You begin to question
everything. I just wanted to be
raw, honest and show that my
family and I didn’t need to fit into
a mould to feel good enough.”
With this logic, her first post
began with advice on ‘pregnancy
hacks’ and she shared the good,
bad and the ugly.
“It just took off, it went really
crazy . . . I was talking about
things that people weren’t talking
about – things that may have
been taboo or “not cool” to talk
about, such as money and how
hard it is at times like Christmas.”
Two and a half years later,
Rocky and Ruby had become a
rapid success across many different
platforms.
When Mrs Keil’s readership
was averaging between 20-30,000
views a month, she began working
with brands who wanted to
advertise to her audience.
Through a platform called,
The Social Club, started by
Christchurch woman Georgia
McGillivray, Mrs Keil was able
to create her own profile, where
brands could find her, reach out
and offer an opportunity to work
together.
The first income she
received from her blog was an
advertisement from Lifestyle app.
Not long after that, Mrs Keil
was approached by McDonalds.
“It was so exciting, I thought
that’s it, I’ve made it, send me to
Hollywood,” she joked.
Mrs Keil put up a photo on
her Instagram of her and other
mothers at McCafe with their
children.
