Cranford St traffic plan to cope
A new study highlights
how traffic will be
managed when the
$240 million Northern
Corridor between
Cranford St and Bealey
Ave opens next year.
Julia Evans reports
A CLEARWAY and more traffic
lights are the key factors in how
42,000 vehicles streaming into
the city will be handled.
A major report released
this week shows how the huge
amount of traffic that flows in
and out of Christchurch from
North Canterbury will be
managed in the future.
City council data shows about
21,000 vehicles travelled down
Cranford St between Berwick
and Westminster Sts on August
30. But the volume is predicted
to increase by 30 per cent
once the Northern Corridor
is finished and Cranford St is
widened to four lanes.
The New Zealand Transport
Agency estimates by 2026
42,000 vehicles will use the new
motorway.
To cope with the additional
traffic, a parking ban during
peak hours to create a clearway
PROGRESS: Work continues on the Northern Corridor, which is expected to be open by
mid-2020 and bring 30 per cent more vehicles to Cranford St.
along Cranford St, between
Innes Rd and Berwick St, has
been proposed.
A high-occupancy vehicle
lane may be installed on
Cranford St to Bealey Ave.
Upgrades to the Westminster
St/Cranford St and Berwick St/
Cranford St intersections, and
installing lights at the Forfar St/
Warrington St and Barbadoes
St/Warrington St junctions have
been suggested.
Meanwhile, installing a set of
pedestrian lights outside English
Park will be investigated.
Traffic calming measures, such
as speed bumps or narrower
