Howard Rayner Buss was 107-years-old and 214 days when he passed away on January 25 at the Wesley Care rest home with family by his side. It is also believed that he could have been New Zealand’s oldest man for two years. On August 7 2016 at 105, Mr Buss became the oldest known man in New Zealand following the death of 108-year-old Bob Edwards. However, he was not known to researchers until his 107th birthday in 2018, when the NZ Parliament Order Paper congratulated him on reaching the milestone. Mr Buss never married, had any children and owned a house or a car, but still managed to enjoy a life filled with travel and adventure. His niece Lee Trusttum told The Star yesterday he was a man that never stayed in one place for too long. Mr Buss would spend months at a time in Christchurch, Auckland and parts of Australia as well as enjoying a few cruises to countries in Asia. “He would always travel equipped with essentials such as a knife and fork, sauce spoon, sewing kit, scissors and tools, he was always fixing things, he was a very accomplished sewer and he would always cut his own hair.” He was fully independent up until he was 99 during the 2011 earthquake, when he subsequently moved into Wesley Care rest home. Mr Buss also experienced the 2010 earthquakes and the 1989 earthquakes in Newcastle, Australia. He suffered from a neuromuscular disease that runs in his family which meant that he spent the majority of his adult life on the pension. Ms Trusttum said he managed to save a lot on the pension due to his frugal nature and would on occasion donate large sums of money to family members. Mr Buss will be buried above his mother with his sister’s ashes at St Peter’s Church in Upper Riccarton. There was a lot of “fuel” that could potentially cause a fire to spread very quickly, said FENZ principal rural fire officer Bruce Janes “With the fire risk indices moving steadily upwards, it is time to introduce restrictions.” FENZ is also urging people to avoid activities such as welding, grinding and even mowing lawns during the hottest part of the day as those activities may inadvertently cause a fire. “It is also sensible for people with homes near trees, scrub or dry grass to do a check of their property to ensure they have minimised the risk of a fire spreading and that they can provide clear and easy access to fire crews in the event of an emergency,’’ said Mr Janes. “I dream of a Pacific where this terrible disease has been eradicated and can no longer cause fear, stigma and discrimination in families and communities.” Lorena and three of her children were diagnosed with leprosy. Lorena says “Although our leprosy could be cured, we knew that sometimes there can be serious effects from the disease, like disabilities. I was terrified that more of my children would get sick. Then the Pacific Leprosy Foundation started its new programme which gives medicine to the rest of the family so that they are much less likely to get leprosy. It was wonderful to have that reassurance! I want to thank the Pacific Leprosy Foundation for giving us back our future. Now I want the rest of the countries in the Pacific to be able to take part in this programme, but I know that costs a lot of money.” Please can you help other families like Lorena’s to be free from the fear of leprosy? The Star Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Thursday January 31 2019 9 Clock tower tenders being sought • By Louis Day TENDERS WILL be called for this week to repair the earthquake-damaged Scarborough and New Brighton clock towers. The city council wants to appoint one contractor to undertake the repairs of the clock towers. City council head of parks Andrew Rutledge was confident its repair strategy would save ratepayers’ money by having one contractor handle both towers. “We believe the cost for keeping the scaffold up is minor, considering the cost efficiencies in packaging both projects together. The tenderers also require the scaffold to be up to fully inspect the structure and damage so that they can price their tender.” Repairs are yet to start on the Scarborough tower in spite of the scaffolding being in place since February last year. The scaffolding is also costing ratepayers $1500 per month. Once a contractor has been secured, repairs are expected to take six months to complete. Sumner resident of 40 years Sam Bradley was frustrated by the lack of progress that has been made on the tower. “I’m the manager for a building company and if we ran our company like that TICKING: Work to repair the Scarborough (left) and New Brighton clock towers has still not started. we wouldn’t have one to run anymore.” Mr Bradley was also disappointed to see the scaffolding being used by vandals to deface the clock tower. “It’s really upsetting, especially when it is the council that is giving people the opportunity to deface it. It’s obviously a bit of an icon for Sumner and to see it like that is a bit of an eyesore.” Local News Now Fire rages, homes at risk Stink over dog poo in Akaroa • By Louis Day ANGRY AKAROA residents are saying their town has a dog poo problem. Accusations ranged from owners watching their dogs’ poo on other peoples’ lawns to allowing their dogs to roam free and poo wherever they please. One resident grew so frustrated with a dog pooing on their lawn that they collected the droppings into a large bag before redistributing them on to the owner’s lawn. The resident said they have not found dog poo on their lawn since. The issue erupted on the Akaroa Buy and Sell page after a resident on Seaview Rd posted a photo of a dog dropping that was left on their back doorstep. The disgruntled resident said they had found dog poo on their back doorstep three times in the last week. “I actually saw the tail end of the dog and I tried to catch it.
