Fiery Protest
Substation theft
ANDISA BONANI
Electrical components valued at
R100,000 were stolen at the
Western substation in Kings
Park last Thursday, and the
transformer which was installed late
in 2018, was vandalised, resulting in
an oil leakage which caused power
outages.
The perpetrators reportedly broke
one of the back access gates and
uprooted copper wires and poles. A
portion of the electric fence which
had not been working at the time, was
removed, 1.25V batteries and a copper
part that transmitted oil to the
transformer was also stolen.
Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality
(EMLM) spokesperson Gcobani
Msindwana said upon inspection by
the technical services personnel, it
was discovered there were people
who had accessed the substation
i l l e g a l l y.
“We discovered that copper
components which surrounded the
perimeters of the substation had been
uprooted. The perpetrators also
climbed up the transformer and
tampered with vital components that
resulted in an oil leakage. We are
Municipality suspects sabotage to the value of R100k
monitoring the leakage to ensure it is
not below a certain level because that
could pose a danger to the substation
which could shut down as a result,
leaving residents connected to it
without power. We are also organising
transformer specialists from East
London to replace all the stolen
components. As a temporary
measure, we have roped in the
services of a security company to
keep this place secured 24/7.”
Msindwana said other
precautionary measures to ensure
there were no further break-ins were
the introduction of access cards to
the substation, a register of who goes
in and out and beams connected to
the municipal technical services
department that would allow
authorisation for persons who need to
access the substation.
On Tuesday, Msindwana indicated
the transformer had run out of oil due
to the leakage, causing it to shut
down. He said electricians were on
site to remedy the situation that left
Madeira, Amberdale, the CBD area
and sections of Top Town without
power for two hours.
“We appeal to residents and the
police to assist us with patrols in the
evenings and check substations that
supply power to big areas. We are
going to have a cluster comprising
the police, Eskom, security guards
and electricians to visit scrapyards
and try to identify the missing
components so we are able to open a
criminal case.
“We will also assess other
substations, such as the one in
Mlungisi which had been broken into
in 2018.”
Msindwana said the municipality
suspected sabotage because the
electricians indicated that if the
manipulation of the transformer had
been done by someone who had no
knowledge of it, a fatal incident might
have occurred.
“It seems as though whoever was
part of this destruction, knew what
they were doing, hence we think it is
sabotage. We urge anyone with
information that could lead to the
apprehension of the perpetrators to
report it to the police.”
Hill-Lewis indicated public
works management had a
abusive tactics were not
practised and that work
through a legal and fair system.
“I understand that everyone is
When Red Guard
response officers
arrived at a cash and
on the alarm last week,
they saw a suspect
running from the
premises, operations
manager Willie
Reinecke told The Rep.
The officer did not see
any forced entry, but
the client was called
and they found that the
suspect had cut the
electrical cables. The
police were called.
On Thursday, armed
reaction officers
responded when an
employee of a cash
store activated a panic
button and reported
that four armed men
had entered the shop
and taken cash and the
airtime machine.
A panic alarm was
activated at a private
home where it was
reported that two men
were arguing and
becoming violent. The
police were called and
the matter handed over
to them.
On Saturday, an
armed reaction officer
responded to a panic
alarm and reported that
an old man had
grabbed a woman’s
money at the ATM.
Community members
on the scene and the
departments must be very careful
because they are using their
authoritative positions to sleep
of them are giving in because
they have to provide for their
families. We will raise our voices
because we are elected to be the
voice for the voiceless.”
Public works assistant
their children to us. As a
result, we have an influx
of 1,430 pupils even
though the school is
meant to cater for 900.”
He said this resulted in
a teacher shortage as it
had 37 teachers although
the ratio was supposed to
be one teacher for 34
pupils.
The school also had a
Van Vuuren said he had
interacted with the
department of education
since 2012 and the latter
had made promises of
constructing the school
since 2015.
“I came to announce to
the school in that year
that a new school would
be built and that it was
He said the provincial
was failing children.
“At the moment, the
hope this time around the
the community, that they
will stick to their word
and that the school will be
Van Vuuren said he
would follow up on the
matter in the legislature
and take careful note that
the promises made to the
school were fulfilled.
Department of
education spokesperson
because it was near the
end of the financial year
in March.
The security guard at
a scrap metal
dealership called for
assistance and they
discovered the back
the electric fence had
been cut and a cutting
torch taken. The owner
was informed, but he
asked the response
officers just to close the
hole. However, the
owner called again later
to report that the
suspect had returned.
The officers found
that he was mentally
disturbed, but there
was another man with
him who would show
where the stolen gas
bottle was.
In two incidents
relating to petty theft
resulting in the
activation of panic
alarms, response
officers convinced the
suspects to pay for the
goods and they were
released.

Mlungisi clean-up campaign
Public asked to
ZINTLE BOBELO
Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality
(EMLM), together with various
stakeholders, officially launched a
Mlungisi clean-up and eradication of
illegal dumping programme at the
Thobi Kula Indoor Sports centre on
Fr i d ay.
Community services acting director
Jambase Magwentshu said they had
taken a ward-based approach and
would visit each ward to embark on a
clean-up initiative.
He said they had donated wheelie
bins to 13 schools in Mlungisi, three
each, to encourage recycling and
separation of waste at source. These
bins comprise two for recyclable and
one for non-recyclable waste.
He said the programme was linked
with the Lukhanji Multi Recycling
Waste Buy Back Centres implemented
by the Chris Hani Development Agency
(CHDA) and funded by the department
of environmental affairs.
“We want pupils to learn more about
recycling and know there is value in
waste. This will reduce the burden of
having to collect several bags of waste
from one household. It will help us increase
the lifespan of our landfill sites.”
Magwentshu said they had involved
ward councillors to educate and
engage with community members
about illegal dumping and the
collection of waste by the municipality.
“We have a challenge with collection
vehicles, but they are being repaired.
We will try to stick to the agreed and
known collection schedule.”
He said four trucks were running,
with two out for repairs.
St Theresa’s Primary School principal
said, “Without a healthy environment,
teaching and learning is affected.
“Today we saw there is a lot we can
do with waste. We are committing
ourselves and will ensure that our
environment is clean. We will consult
when or if there are any challenges.”
EMLM chief whip Nombuyiselo
Ndlebe, who spoke on behalf of mayor
Sisisi Tolashe, placed emphasis on the
issue of illegal dumping.
“Sometimes we think there is no
water but then we hear that water
drains are clogged with waste, dumped
by residents. We have pictures of three
infants that were recently found in
these drains. We are currently drafting
municipal bylaws that prohibit illegal
dumping. We appeal to community
members and the taxi association to
work with us in keeping the entire town
clean,” Ndlebe said.
Woman claims spaza shop sells expired goods
ZINTLE BOBELO
A owner of a New Rest spaza shop denies he is
selling expired goods to customers.
This follows claims by customer Ncumisa Mpakama
that her niece was sold expired items.
She said she had sent her niece to buy bread and a
packet of crisps at D & V Spaza. She said her niece
returned only to inform her of an argument she had
had with shop assistants over three packets of
expired crisps. Mpakama said she had taken a video
when she approached the men running the business
they remove all expired food items from the shelves.
“They ignored me. I explained that not every
customer checks expiry dates when buying goods. In
their defence, one of them said they were receiving
food items with expired dates from their suppliers. I
asked them to take the food items back to their
suppliers and not sell them to us.
“I then went back to my car to fetch the bread I had
already bought and gave it back to them, saying I
could no longer trust them . . . I told them to keep the
money and left.” The Rep visited the shop and spoke
to one of the shop assistants who did not identify
himself. “I have been here for 12 years and no one has
ever complained. When we do come across expired
products, we take them back to where we bought
ANDISA BONANI
Police are trying to trace the families of four
people after bodies were found in different areas
between September and December.
“No one has claimed any of these bodies and
we rely on the media to assist. The state mortuary
can keep a body for six months, sometimes longer,
and if that elapses they will be buried by the
st at e , ” police spokeswoman captain Namhla
Mdleleni said.
“However, before a body is buried we must have
exhausted all available avenues to locate their
families and make the public aware of the
unidentified persons.”
In September, the body of a man who wore blue
jeans and a grey sweater was found in Unifound.
The decomposed body of a 55-year-old woman
was also found near Voyizana River in Mlungisi.
The woman was wearing black trousers, a jacket
and shoes. The police have appealed to families
who may be missing loved ones to approach the
Mlungisi police station for more information.
The body of a 55-year-old woman was found
near Avalon farm in an open field in early
December. She was wearing a brown skirt and
boots and the body of a 35-year-old man was
found near Zamaland Tavern in Bede with an open
wound to the head. He was wearing black trousers
and a blue work suit.
Mdleleni urged families to contact her on
Ward 11 councillor Piya Mbasana said she was not
aware of this, but was scheduled to meet with the
ward committee this week. Information from this
meeting was not available at the time of going to
Disabled drivers forgotten
ABONGILE SOLUNDWANA
Yandisa Jaggers, who has been
wheelchair-bound for two years since
she sustained a spinal cord injury, is
unhappy about the removal of one of
the two disabled people’s parking
bays at Protea SUPERSPAR, following
the store’s renovation.
Jaggers said the remaining
parking bay had been reduced to a
normal size which could not
accommodate people with
wheelchairs.
She said a single parking bay
could also only accommodate one
disabled person at a time.
Jaggers questioned why provision
was not made for more disabled
customers as it was for able-bodied
shoppers.
Jaggers said she complained
about the issue at the store.
“I was told because it was
municipal parking there was nothing
much the management could do
about it, but surely it was also
municipal parking before the
renovations took place.”
She said she also took offence
when able-bodied people ignored the
disabled parking sign and used the
space to park their cars, adding that
it was an act of discrimination.
During the busy festive season,
Jaggers said she had used other
supermarkets or had someone go in
to shop for her at the SUPERSPAR.
“On three occasions in December I
saw the space used by some
company to promote their products.
“In other words, the SUPERSPAR
does not want disabled customers of
any kind.”
An upset Jaggers said Protea
SUPERSPAR manager John Atkins
had told her he did not know
anything about the matter and
passed her on to one of two
assistant managers, who she
claimed listened to her complaint
with a “half laugh”.
The assistant manager, Keith
Coetzee, said: “’Oh no, I am not
‘Not all policemen
are corrupt’ – Kopolo
ABONGILE SOLUNDWANA
Brigadier Mzoli Kopolo, who has retired as
Queenstown police station commander, said
he was proud to leave the SAPS without any
scandals, a true reflection that not all
policemen were corrupt.
Kopolo, who was born in Ugie, had served
in the SAPS for 35 years and said becoming
a police officer was never in his plans.
“I was advised by a police officer to
consider training as a policeman as a means
to further my studies. I thought it would only
be for a short while before I could use the
money I made to enrol for law, but when I
started working in 1984, my parents’ job
contracts ended and I was forced to stay.”
His first station was Elliot, where he
furthered his diploma as a police
administrator through Unisa and climbed the
ranks to station commander at the same
station where he served for 13 years.
He then moved to Aliwal North in 1997 for
a year and to Komani as a captain and
spokesperson the following year.
In 2001, he was stationed in Cofimvaba
and returned to Komani on promotion in
2004 where he worked as station
commander and brigadier, having completed
a degree in policing from the University of
Pretoria and managerial courses.
He said his successes included cracking
the murder case of a former prominent radio
presenter, Velelo Nomsobo, who was
hijacked and shot by five young men in
C of i m va b a .
“On the same day, I was alerted about a
shooting which had taken place at one of the
local villages which linked up with
Nomsobo’s murder. I arrested all five men
within five hours and was nominated as the
star of the year in the Komani area.”
According to Kopolo, being a policeman
was all about loyalty and patriotism.
“One must not depend on your
commander, but one must be self-driven and
do one’s job.”
He said being a policeman also required
one to have passion and discretion as there
BRIGADIER MZOLI KOPOLO
were many challenges.
Kopolo said there were constant changes
in the police field which were introduced by
the head of department and required officers
to adjust themselves to the environment.
Demonstrating respect for a commander,
other authorities in the field and above all,
the constitution, was what defined a true
policeman for him.
“Unemployment and drug abuse were the
biggest contributing factors to the escalating
crime in Komani. These result in property
break-ins and stock theft. As much as there
is more that can be done to remove drugs,
the police are trying their level-best to curb
the crime. There have been arrests made
through the information we have received
from community members.”
“I wish the police would use the legacy I
have left, which is to assist and respect the
community that they serve.”
He said one of the challenges of young
police officers was the failure to work within
the ambit of the law.
“I urge them to study in order to further
their careers.”
STUTTERHEIM – On Thursday night
there was mild protest action in town
in preparation for Friday’s planned total
shutdown.
The reason was the much-touted
fear that due to alleged theft and
corruption there was no money to pay
municipal employees.
Just about every business in town
was closed under duress and the
streets were empty for most of the
d ay.
Police clashed with the rioters on
several occasions through the course
of the day and into the early evening.
All the schools were closed and
Stutterheim High was requested to
send their pupils home, because
only 37% of pupils
attended school.
Business was
back to usual on
Saturday though.
ON Tuesday afternoon, in the scorching
heat, Stutt High had its athletics day.
For the first time, the meeting was
held in the afternoon to prevent it from
running into valuable academic and
class time.
Despite this, there were many eager
athletes who braved the extreme
conditions and took part in the events,
the majority of which were
short-distances, long and high jump.
ON Saturday, Round Table 103 hosted a
fun bowls day at the bowls club.
There were 12 teams of four each,
made up of experienced players, old
hands and entrants who had been
cajoled into joining in for a bit of fun.
They came from as far afield as East
London and Komani. Though the
emphasis was on enjoyment and
participation, it was certainly a
competition and competitions mean
prizes. The winning team was the
Round Table 41ers Number 2
comprising Tyron Schartz, Mark Daniel,
Alfred Eckleben and Hannes Burger.
Second and third places were
scooped up by the Twaksakke and the
41ers Number 1 respectively.
Evidently, the old “ballies” are still a
force to be reckoned with!
AT Stutterheim High there is an
inordinately large number of former
headgirls on the staff.
Six of them are Tracey Freitag (now
Greyling, 1990), Sonja Lombard (now
Wylde, 1994), Cindy James (now
Kingman, 1995), Tracy-Lee de Coning
(now Dunne, 1997), Marli Meyer, 2011
and Erin Lentz 2014.
This is a testament to the school and
to the town as a whole considering
that all have returned to their Alma
Mater after a period of living and
working elsewhere. Greyling is now the
HOD for the foundation phase, dealing
with issues great and small and
preparing those little people for the big
world outside. She is aided by Wylde
and Kingman.
In the intermediate phase, Meyer
continues to inspire young minds in
her Afrikaans class. Lentz and De
Coning both teach in the high school.
Neither thought they would land up
back in Stutt and yet both are loving
(and being loved) in their jobs.
A YOUNG man making his family,
school and town proud, Joshua
Norman of Winterburg Agricultural
High School, has been selected to
compete in the EP U19B biathlon team.
The team will compete in an
interprovincial tournament in
Oudtshoorn in February. We wish Josh
all the best.
EDITORIAL
OPINION
Do investigations
do any good?
SA must be the “commission
of inquiry” capital of the
world. Well, commission,
investigation, inquiry, public
scrutiny, examination ... call it
what you will, it all boils down to
the same thing in the end.
Among many others we have in
recent years had the arms deal,
Nkandla, the whole Gupta saga,
inquiries into Eskom, the Nugent
inquiry into SARS, the Mokgoro
inquiry, VBS Bank, SAA, Eskom,
the National Prosecuting Authority
and now the Zondo Commission
investigating the ramifications of
the Bosasa shenanigans and the
scrutiny of the Public Investment
C o r p o r at i o n … the list goes on…
And while all these
commissions open up their
respective cans of worms – and so
they should – what is the
outcome? The only entities to
benefit from these inquiries, it
seems, are the television stations
which can fill their daytime
viewing with the free, neverending
goings-on of some commission.
We are all duly shocked to hear
the undreamt-of extent to which
people go to enrich themselves
and grab power and we “ooh” and
“aah” when we learn just how
unbelievably devious and
dishonest some people can be,
but when the hearing is over and
the dust settles, what happens
then?
The scrutiny reveals only the tip
of the iceberg of the extent of the
ongoing feeding frenzy that is
happening under our noses, but it
leaves South Africans wondering
where they will find justice as they
hear of cases being deliberately
being squashed and believing
there will never be adequate
service delivery or job creation
because the funds are being
squandered and misappropriated
by a few.
But the results of these very
expensive hearings are never
made public, no explanations are
given and the perpetrators never
suffer any consequences that we
know of.
Certainly their names have been
dragged through the mud and
perhaps they have been relieved
of their jobs, but neither of these
appears to bother anyone.
Some seem to disappear from
the public eye for a while, others
sit back comfortably and enjoy
their ill-gotten millions, while
some start their own political
party in an election year – thus
ensuring that they remain in the
public eye, that is how badly
disgraced they feel.
Time for HPV
vaccinations
ANDISA BONANI
The department of health will host
its sixth human papilloma virus
(HPV) campaign since government
introduced the vaccine in 2014 for
girls in grade 4 due to the increase
in the number of women and girls
diagnosed with cervical cancer.
Mandisa Sitonga of the health
department said the campaign was
conducted on an annual basis and
required two doses over a period
of six months.
“HPV vaccine prevents cancer. It
is safe and effective in preventing
the HPV-16 and 18 strains of the
virus. I must emphasise that the
HPV vaccine does not prevent or
treat HIV infections or prevent
pregnancy, nor does it affect a
girl’s ability to have children in the
future.”
Sitonga said the department
would visit schools to conduct HPV
vaccination and grade 4 girls
would receive their first dose.
“All parents and guardians are
requested to sign and return the
consent forms to schools before
February 1 for pupils who will be
vaccinated. Girls who are 12 years
or older, may give assent for
themselves. Parents are requested
to ensure their children attend
school on the scheduled dates.”
The campaign will start on
February 5 and continue to
February 15 in all public and
special schools with grade 4
classes.
Question: Tell us about your
occup ation.
Answer: Last week I was
deployed to the Ngcobo local
municipality by the ANC and
subsequent to that I was
elected by the Ngcobo local
municipality as mayor.
Q: What inspires you?
A: To work and improve the
lives of ordinary people. As
public representatives we must
be exemplary and do our work
with honesty and integrity. We
carry on our shoulders the
aspirations and hopes of our
people.
Q: Your favourite destination?
A: South Africa is a peaceful
and beautiful country. There are
many places of interest. My
favourite destination is China. I
like China because of their
technological advancement and
progress. People of China are
hard working and they love their
country. I would like to copy
what the Chinese are doing
especially in agriculture and
manufacturing. I like their
economic policies. They refer to
them as communism with
Chinese characteristics. So
when we copy their
developmental agenda, it must
have our own characteristics, so
that our people can relate to it.
A: I like reading. From
reading one learns new ways of
dealing with a wide range of
complex issues. Reading opens
our minds.
Q: What makes you angry and
what makes you happy?
A: What makes me angry is
seeing people suffering and
what makes me happy is to help
someone who is suffering.
Q: If you were to be president,
what would you do?
A: President Cyril Ramaphosa
is one of the best presidents our
country has produced since the
ushering in of the 1994 political
breakthrough. The Thuma Mina
campaign has been widely
foundation what I would do is
encourage every citizen to live a
healthy lifestyle. I would
discourage the element of
dependency syndrome. People
must be encouraged to do
things that will help them
improve their socio-economic
s i t u at i o n .
Q: What is it that people do
not know about you?
A: I think that I am a very
open and not a difficult and
complicated person. I dislike
laziness. What I think many
people don’t know about me is
that I am a sportsman as well.
Q: What do you believe can be
done to curb unemployment
in South Africa?
A: I believe that we need to
washes should definitely own
tanks. Chris Hani
Municipality should introduce
a system where if people
exceed a certain number of
litres they would be
penalised just like in Port
Elizabeth. Pastors must pray
for rain – it has worked
Nobesuthu Selelane from
Ko m a n i
We should reuse our
laundry rinsing water for
flushing the toilets and our
soapy water to water the
garden. People must
prepare our people for the
fourth industrial revolution. We
need to venture into the skills
development revolution
programme. When people are
empowered with skills, they
create work opportunities. We
need to support the informal
businesses like spaza shops
and hawkers. We need to make
sure that we grow the local
economy and diversify it so that
it is inclusive and responsive to
the economic needs of our
communities. We need to revive
both the rural and the township
e c o n o m y.
Q: Are you proudly South
African and why?
A: I am proudly South African.
I believe if we promote the
brand SA, we will attract
investors to invest in our
country. I strongly believe that
as a country we are very strong
in agriculture and
manufacturing. We need to
build brands that can compete
internationally. We need to
promote brand SA
Q: What advice would you
give to your younger self?
A: Respect time. Time lost
never returns. Procrastination is
the thief of time. Always do
things on time. Prosperous
people are good at time
management.
substitute bath tub water and
showers with wash basins.
Brighton Nkabinde from
Pola Park
We should use buckets and
not waste water when
washing our cars. We should
reuse water for other things.
The township areas do not
use a lot of water compared
to the suburbs where some
houses have swimming
pools. A pool contains about
60,000 litres of water. The
people who own them should
not take out all the water to
clean them.

WHAT A MESS: When The Rep went to take a picture of the site of an electrical repair referred to in the adjacent letter, the excavations had been
filled in, but there was still a heap of soil and the surface of the sidewalk was very uneven
Picture: CHUX FOURIE
Fire municipal slackers not doing work
Fed-up of Komani writes: A month
ago, sections of Top Town were
without electricity for an extended
period and the problem was traced to
the corner of Frost Street and College
Avenue where a large hole was dug to
allow for the repairs.
When the men had finished, they
covered the cable they had worked on
with a piece of cardboard and that is
how it has remained.
Can no one connected with the
municipality think that the area is right
among the schools and a child could
be seriously injured or, even worse – if
they were to fiddle with the cable?
Do they not think that a piece of
cardboard will not be able to keep that
cable dry when it rains and there will
be another power outage?
Anyone walking there could easily
fall in and there is not even a proper
warning. I hope the municipality has
very good insurance in this regard,
because if someone were injured they
could sue for a fortune.
What about the appearance of our
town – is it acceptable to just leave
holes in sidewalks and great heaps of
soil next to them?
I really believe they do not care
about any of these things. There are
many such holes that the municipality
has just left until they are overgrown
with grass and weeds – think of the
areas on both sides of Cathcart Road
(our main thoroughfare!) at the corner
with Griffiths Street which remained
that way for months, another at the
entrance to the museum, on the
corner of Madeira Home ... there are
m a n y.
And what has happened about it?
I’ll bet nothing!
Madam mayor, the head of the
department concerned should be fired
on the spot as he/she has not
supervised his/her staff. This neglect
of duty will continue as long as there
are no consequences for shoddy work
and we cannot afford people who do
not do their work properly.
ROUND&ABOUT
Kelly has indeed found a ‘bo er’
Brush up for
Love of Art
charity event
Artists and art lovers
should take note – the
dates have been set for
the 2019 Love of Art
Charity Art Exhibition,
which will open on
Thursday evening, May
9.
“It is not a year since
the last one,” you might
s ay.
That is true, but it is
only because 2018’s
exhibition was held off
as a result of the
refurbishments being
done at the venue, and
so it was not held in May
as it usually is.
It is quite difficult to
choose a time to host
this event – people
prefer not to go out when
it is very cold, there are
times of the year when
there are many other
things on, school
holidays mean many
people are out of town,
the venue is heavily in
demand at times, and so
on – but it seems May is
a good time for most
people.
So to the artists out
there – and The Rep’s
readership area has its
fair share – you only
have three months in
which to prepare your
m a st e r p i e c e s .
To those who love to
wander through the
exhibition and view the
work (and perhaps to
purchase some as well),
diarise it now – it is a
once-in-a-year event you
do not want to miss!
GHS Old Girl tells of her experience on reality show
Born and raised here, GHS Old
Girl Kelly Godley, daughter of
Garry and Antoinette, can at
last speak about her incredible
experience on the Kyknet dating
programme Boer Soek ‘n Vrou.
The Rep asked Kelly, a
radiographer by profession, to
describe her experience and here
she tells it in her own words:
“The most asked question is,
‘Why on earth did you enter BSV?’
“I thought maybe this was why I
had not met my husband yet. I
imagined this poor guy stuck in
the middle of nowhere and here I
am in East London waiting for him
to drive past in his white bakkie
and notice me.
“Without the programme, the
chances of Duncan and I ever
bumping into each other were
very slim so I sent off my letter, a
water colour painting to catch his
attention, and a video [which I
thought was compulsory but
turned out to be optional and my
Afrikaans was a bit rusty].
“From the day I got the call to
say I was in Duncan’s top 10, it
was a top secret adventure.
“At the East London airport on
my way to Cape Town for my fiveminute
interview with Duncan, I
bumped into a good friend,
Justine Cockin. It was great to see
her as she lives in the UK now. We
had a cup of coffee together and
proceeded to tell each other lies
about where we were going to. [It
was a top-secret mission,
remember].
“Once we had landed in Cape
Town, we formed a what’s app
group: Duncan’s girls. Naturally I
was inquisitive to see which other
girls were after ‘my boer’.
“Low and behold, there was a
number that was saved on my
phone. I said to Justine, ‘Are we
here for the same thing?’ And she
said, ‘Yes, and the same farmer!’
“It was such a funny moment
and a blessing in disguise
because it made the experience
that much better with a great
friend by my side.
“The production of the show
was very professional and it was
genuine reality.
“The only time we spent with
our farmers was in front of the
camera. We were always in the
dark as to what was going to
happen next as they wanted the
raw and completely honest first
reaction to be caught on camera
for the viewers.
“The advice from my dad was,
‘Kelly just be yourself and you will
be fine’. So, this advice and an
open mind to possibilities was
Sunday February 17: Merrifield Mile,
what I took with me throughout
the experience.
“In the beginning, the cameras
were quite daunting [there were
many!] but I made a decision to
put all my inhibitions and shyness
behind me and go for it. I enjoyed
every second. The BSV team is
such an amazing group of people
and it is thanks to them that I felt
comfortable in front of the camera.
“Something which was quite
difficult was keeping everything
that was going on a secret.
“I had to work weeks of night
duty to get the time off to go for
filming.
“When I disappeared for a week
at a time my alibi was always, ‘I’m
going to locum in Cape Town’ or
‘I’m doing a course’.
“But, thanks to the bakkies with
massive BSV logos driving around
East London and my Van Heerden
cousins, I don’t think the secret
was kept for very long.
“Although things did not work
out for Duncan and me, I gained
so much through this experience
and made so many amazing new
friends. Something which made
my heart so happy was how all the
girls supported each other and
built each other up through the
whole process.
“The friendships I have made
Friday-Saturday February 22-23:
Merrifield waterpolo tournament, East
will last a lifetime, I have no
doubt.
“BSV also opened doors for so
many other things. When in Cape
Town for BSV, I happened to be in
the right place at the right time
and was offered an amazing job.
“The experience of living in
Cape Town has been something I
have always dreamt of.
“Boer Soek ‘n Vrou season 11
was quite a successful one as
there were two success stories
this season – Toanette and Nardus
and Rox-zee and Rean ... keep an
ear open for those wedding bells.
“Something so special to me
was the once-in-a-lifetime
experience I shared with my
amazing parents.
“They were my support in every
way throughout the BSV journey.
“They did not want to be on TV
but did it anyway and I am so
blessed to have parents who will
literally do anything to help me
find happiness.
“Speaking of happiness ... I
have found that the saying is true,
‘Love has a funny way of finding
you when you stop seeking for it,’
because it turns out, it was not a
farmer from Verkykerkop, but
instead a farmer from Bedford
who would drive past in his white
bakkie and catch my attention!”
Top prize for Freemantle
ANDISA BONANI
Freemantle Boys’ High School in Cacadu
was awarded the biggest prize for their
outstanding matric pass rate of 96% in
the 2018 academic year during the Chris
Hani District Municipality (CHDM)
Excellence Awards held last week.
Five other schools from the district
which performed exceptionally well were
also recognised. Cofimvaba-based St
James High achieved a 92% pass to take
second spot and Komani’s Ndlovukazi
High with an 88% success, took third
place. Other schools honoured were
Nyanga High from Ngcobo, J.A Calata
anniversary recently
ZINTLE BOBELO
Howard Ben Mazwi Junior
Secondary School in
Ezibeleni celebrated 41
years of its existence last
week.
Principal Noluthando
Dyi, who was appointed in
2017, said they wanted to
celebrate the school’s
legacy as it had produced
many leaders.
“We wanted to
commemorate the legacy
of the late Howard
Ben-Mazwi with former
pupils, educators and the
community of Ezibeleni.”
She said the school had
370 registered pupils this
year and confirmed that
the school was still
operating in spite of
rumours that it would be
closed this year.
“The education
department introduced
what we call
rationalisation or the
merging of schools, where
they consider the number
of pupils per school. If the
number of pupils in
primary schools is less
than 135, the policy
indicates that the school
must be closed or
merged. We do not have
any document from the
department stating that
the school is closing. We
will wait until due
processes are followed.”
Howard Ben Mazwi
educational growth
organisation chair
Thozamisa Ben-Mazwi,
one of the grandchildren
who spoke on behalf of
the family, said their hope
was to see progress and
development in education,
especially in the
community of Ezibeleni.
“Our grandfather played
a huge role, not only in
education but in sport,
community and religious
development, as well as
political activism. We are
the fruits of his hard work
and dedication. He also
went to other parts of the
province and lived to see
growth in others. Hence
the school in Mdantsane
was named after him. We
have taken his lead and
will follow in his
fo ot st e p s . ”
Magistrate Siphiwe
Mdyogolo, who is a
former pupil, gave a
Secondary from Cradock and Cala-based
A.M Zantsi Secondary School.
Freemantle walked away with a
certificate, a laptop and a R25,000 cash
prize, while the other schools received
certificates, a laptop each and R20,000 in
cash.
CHDM mayor Kholiswa Vimbayo
congratulated schools for contributing to
improved matric results.
“We felt it was fitting for the district to
recognise this excellence while
encouraging other schools that did not
perform as well to do better this year. We
understand that education is a societal
matter and our key priority, hence I
commit today to support schools in each
motivational speech,
highlighting issues that
hinder young people’s
academic progress.
“We are faced with the
serious issue of substance
abuse which has
destroyed society and
they [pupils] need to
understand that it all
stems from taking
responsibility and looking
after yourself.”
Mdyogolo said he noted
the number of enrolled
pupils was low compared
local authority with R100,000 – to be split
among high schools to assist them with
whatever they may need to ensure
teaching and learning flourish,” he said.
Freemantle deputy principal
Zamukulingisa Madotyeni said he was
thankful the municipality appreciated and
recognised work done by teachers and
pupils.
“The six schools thank the district
municipality and the ruling party for their
support because without them we
probably would not be here today. Thank
you for appreciating the little things we do
in our schools by recognising our efforts
which contributed to Freemantle being the
top school in the district. We promise to
to when he was at the
school in 1985.
“It was hard for
teachers to even write on
the board, but times have
changed because now
teachers are able to reach
each pupil. As we grow
up, we tend to forget we
have responsibilities.
Young people think life
starts when they have to
apply for tertiary
education. My message
was to help them develop
their own roles to define
their future.”
continue working hard and our aim for
this year is to achieve a 100% pass rate.”
Speaking on behalf of the Chris Hani
district director, Nkosikho Mtshotane said
teachers were faced with various
challenges, such as unruly learners who,
at some schools, posed a threat to
teachers’ lives.
“As much as we applaud and are proud
of the excellent work by teachers and
pupils, we cannot ignore the issues of
drugs and violence that plague schools.
We need assistance from parents,
traditional leaders and the police to
eradicate gangs in schools. “The question
we need an urgent answer to is how do
we eradicate this behaviour?” he asked.
AIMING HIGH: CHDM executive mayor
Kholiswa Vimbayo, left, hands over an
award to Ndluvikazi High School principal
Andile Zumana whose school achieved an
88% pass rate in last year’s matric
exams
NO TO CRIME: Nomzamo Neighbourhood Watch chair Andile Zondi addresses pupils at Luvuyo
Lerumo Senior Secondary School in a mission to root out crime
Picture: ZINTLE BOBELO
Neighbourhood watch
fights crime in schools
ZINTLE BOBELO
Nomzamo Neighbourhood Watch
embarked on an outreach to
engage with pupils from different
schools in Mlungisi with the aim of
eliminating gangsterism and
criminal activity.
Chair Andile Zondi said crime
was becoming a common feature
in schools and was a matter that
needed serious attention.
“There is a lack of discipline and
respect for teachers, a trend that
the pupils seem to follow. They
carry weapons and drugs instead
of books and pens.
“We targeted high schools last
week and addressed the
consequences of partaking in
illegal activities. We will visit
primary schools as well because
teachers are experiencing
problems when pupils smoke glue.
“We want to warn and inform
them that we will not tolerate this
unacceptable behaviour.”
Zondi said they recently handed
over weapons they had collected
from a weekend patrol to police
following a housebreaking in
Khayelitsha, Mlungsi.
“Fortunately we managed to
find the perpetrator in Phola Park
together with the victims’
belongings.”
He said residents needed to be
extra cautious about their safety.
“Locals must make sure that doors
are properly locked and windows
closed.”
Zondi also raised the issue of
pupils carrying cellphones to
school.
“Last week, a pupil had a knife
pointed at her throat and the
Phones attract thieves and are a
distraction in classrooms.”
Luvuyo Lerumo Senior
Secondary School principal
Siphiwe Tyilana said some pupils
came from vulnerable
backgrounds where they were
exposed to physical and substance
abuse from friends and family.
“Such initiatives are of great
importance as they assist in
changing behaviour which helps to
produce positive attitudes and
excellent academic performance. I
always encourage such visits,”
Tyilana said.
Ward 11 councillor Piya
Mbasana, accompanied by former
pupil Anele Hala, were also
present to share the importance of
registering to vote in the election.
Generally, registration went well
ABONGILE SOLUNDWANA
In spite of the protests and
disruptions that took place at
the Mlungisi (Stutterheim),
Xolorha and Thomas River
voting registration stations in
Amahlati municipality, the
provincial electoral officer,
Kayakazi Magudumana, said
the rest of the provincial areas
had managed well.
Magudumana said less than
0.7% of the stations could not
operate and that the disruption
had been controlled by security
services who ensured the
safety of Electoral Commission
of South Africa (IEC) officials
and the operating equipment.
“It was pleasing to see the
increased number of young
Suzuki Jimny – just the cricket
The cutest 4x4 by a long jump. The new little
reincarnation of an icon from 20 years ago is back
and it does not disappoint.
Digging deep from back then, it’s to Suzuki’s
quality credit that, amazingly, most of those old LJ,
SJ and Jimnys are still on the road and the owners
like to greet each other, flash lights and wave . . .
They were around when we could still drive on
our beaches and any other brand would most
likely have rusted itself into oblivion.
Suzuki has dispensed with the rounded styling
everyone else is pursuing. Instead, the new Jimny
is as square as an outdoor toilet and pretty boxy;
like a miniature Mercedes-Benz Gelandewagen, the
toughest off-road Merc of all. Its retro-modern
styling is somehow most appealing.
The full-size spare wheel is rear-mounted,
externally, to free up interior space.
Unlike some other new 4x4s, the Jimny retains
it toughness. The ladder-frame chassis is still
there, strengthened even more, with a new
x-cross-member in the middle. This gives the
strength off which the suspension can work
properly in trying off-road conditions. Suzuki has
also retained the solid axles enabling you to take
on all obstacles.
New is Suzuki’s ALLGRIP PRO four-wheel-drive
system that combines a low-range transfer box
with a Brake limited-slip differential and electronic
stability control, which sends the power to where
tyres are not up in the air or are not slipping. The
system has an extra-power mode which kicks in
below 30 km/h in low range, for the best possible
t raction.
You have 4x2, 4x4 and 4x4 low range and
enthusiast off-roaders will appreciate the return to
a manual, lever-operated, four-wheel drive
operation which even allows a swop from 4x2 to
4x4 on the fly up to 100km/h.
Also, the vehicle has Hill Hold and Hill Descent
FLOODGATES OF HEAVEN: The long-awaited rain to relieve the drought that has engulfed the Chris
Hani district finally poured down in Komani on Wednesday afternoon. The storm, that also saw
small hail falling, flooded some Komani streets due the dysfunctional drainage system
ON YOUR MARKS, GET SET, GO!: Under-14 boys took part in the 200m sprint during the local
inter-schools athletics meeting at The Rec on Saturday. Shaun Michael Sharneck (Queen’s College
25.82) obtained first position and Uyanda Mlungwana (also Queens’ 28.06) was second.
Placements and results: Balmoral – three placements; GHS – 49 placements, with 23 first places;
Hangklip – 48 placements, with 15 first places; QC – 80 placements, with 34 first places;
Ndlovukazi – 18 placements, with eight first places; Nkonkobe – one placement; Hexagon – f i ve
placements, with one first place; Lesseyton – eight placements, with two first places; Toisekraal –
two placements, with one first place and Lavelilanga – nine placements, with one first place
She said those who missed
the opportunity to register last
weekend could register at the
IEC offices located in all
municipalities between 8am
and 5pm on weekdays.
“This opportunity is only
available until the
proclamation of the election
date by President Cyril
Ramaphosa when registration
for the national and provincial
2019 election will cease.”
The IEC partnership with the
South African Police Services
and Government
Communication and
Information System in the
province contributed to the
success of the registration
weekend, Magudumana said.
The IEC Eastern Cape’s Julie
Stanworth said political parties
were also active, mobilising
people to go and register.
She said the number of
political parties to take part in
2019’s election will only be
known once registration of
political parties has closed.
“IEC readiness to afford the
citizens the opportunity to
register was in place and all
materials were delivered in
time.”
The national press statement
indicated that the Eastern Cape
ranked third after
KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng
with 130,959 new voters
r e g i st e r e d .
control for seamless take-offs on slippery inclines.
Downhill, this also holds the vehicle’s speed
automatically, to under 5km/h, when in low range,
and 10km/h in high range.
All three Jimny models – the entry-level GA
(R264,900 price tag), GLX Manual (R299,900) and
GLX Automatic (R319,900) – are fitted with these
traction systems
Our test Jimny was the GLX
five-speed manual which had 15-inch
alloy wheels, central locking, electric
windows and side mirror adjustment,
cruise control, remote keyless entry,
LED headlights and fog lights.
The base-level GA has 15-inch steel
wheels, but as with the rest of the
range, also has air-conditioning, dual
front airbags, ABS and Electronic Stability
Programme.
They also all now have the 1,5-litre engine
instead of the 1,3-litre unit – and, although power
output is not remarkable – it’s lighter and makes a
mile of difference in tractability and overall
per formance.
It produces 75kW at 6,000r/min and 130Nm of
torque at 4,000r/min but, thanks to new
technology, is more economical than the old
version, returning an average fuel consumption
figure of 6,3l/100km.
In the rough stuff, you have this feeling of
invincibility with the Jimny, because of its
compactness and responsiveness to inputs from a
good driver. Its exception approach and departure
angles have been improved still further by some
three degrees and the ground clearance is up
20mm to 210mm, over its predecessor. It’s the
same length as before, but it now has a 40mm
wider track.
Don’t try to fool yourself otherwise, but the
Jimny is a two-seater, as when you have enough
legroom for the front seat occupants, there is little
The Independent Electoral
Commission will undertake
registration drives at higher
learning campuses in February
to boost registration.
Amahlathi Municipal
communications officer
Thamsanqa Balindlela said
there were no IEC staff at
Cenyulands Community Hall in
Stutterheim over the weekend.
He said, “Siyakhula Public
School had no IEC staff on
Saturday, but people registered
outside the voting station on
Sunday. There were no IEC
staff at the Mlungisi
Community Hall, only the DA
party agent.”
He said the rest of the
registration stations operated
s m o ot h l y.
left over for rear passengers for real comfort. So
those rear seat backrests will spend most time
folded down for utility storage.
The boxy design has allowed for extra interior
space and even two large front seat occupants
don’t easily bump shoulders. The front seats now
have wider cushions and frames and are
profoundly more comfortable than
b e fo r e .
Our test Jimny was fitted with
Suzuki’s Smartphone Linkage Display
Audio, a double-DIN system with a 7-inch
infrared touch screen with Android Auto,
Apple Carplay and Mirrorlink integration.
It has a USB connector, SD-card slot and
Bluetooth hands-free connectivity and
the most important features can be
controlled by buttons on the leather-clad steering
wheel.
This spunky Suzuki comes with a four-year/
60,000km service plan. All models come standard
with a five-year/200,000km mechanical warranty.
It will be difficult for any opposition to better
the Jimny in its class. Bring it on, says Suzuki – in
fact, no contest, it just won’t be cricket .
SPUNKY: The new Suzuki Jimny is all
one wants from a serious, diminutive 4x4

Stars shine against Young Minds
ZINTLE BOBELO
Seven Stars emerged victorious
from the Chris Hani SAB
Regional League match against
Young Minds at the Dumpy
Adams complex on Saturday.
The game kicked off with
Seven Stars scoring their first
goal less than 30 minutes into
the game and another, to their
opponents’ one, ending with the
score at 2-1.
Team manager Vernon
Jackson said they had lost their
previous game against the
Whittlesea-based team
Amathole and were proud to
have obtained an epic 4-1 score.
“It feels good because we
had just come from a loss.
“We had to work on our
mistakes in the gym during the
week, and perfected everything.
“Today the results of our work
paid off against our opponents,
who are also a very good team.
“I congratulate them for
playing a good game but
unfortunately Seven Stars were
the better team,” Jackson said..
The team went on to record a
2-0 win against Grootfontein in
Middelburg on Sunday, making
them the leading team in the
log, followed by Valgas.
Jackson said the team had
prepared for both matches and
were mentally and physically fit
to participate.
Disappointed Young Minds
team manager, Yanelisa
Tshipiso, who was the interim
coach, said the team had had
issues but did not want to
disclose any information.
“Since the formation of this
team, we had never lost a
match by this score.
“Emotionally, we lost this
game before it even started. We
had our own challenges prior to
the game. We will, however,
used to playing two games in
one weekend.”
In response to why coach
Melikhaya Ntenetyana was not
on the bench, Tshipiso said.
“It was registration weekend
and he was busy with
elections.” The team played
better on Sunday against AFC
Komani Stars and won 3-0 .
B r e a ke r s ’ title aspirations dealt serious blow
MAXWELL LEVINE
Breakers had the worst possible start to
their Eastern Cape Super 12 rugby
campaign when they were annihilated
45-0 by Kruisfontein away from home at
the weekend.
The smash-and-grab defeat is a major
setback to their aspirations of going all
the way in the competition.
In what was the game of the weekend,
Progress overcame a spirited EL Police
side in a close encounter, winning 25-23.
Both these teams are hot favourites to
win this prestigious competition. They
both have star-studded teams and have
the pedigree to go all the way. Police are
former champs, while Progress have made
it to the final on several occasions.
In the East London derby, Old
Selbornians were too strong for Buffs,
beating them 36-10. It is a neck-and-neck
race for top spot as Star of Hope defeated
Ntlaza Lions 36-6 to go top of Group A.
Breaker can redeem themselves
tomorrow when they welcome Berlin
Tigers at Mlungisi Stadium. Matches
between the two sides have always been
close. Old Boys travel to Port Elizabeth for
a date with Star of Hope. A win for either
side will take them one step closer to the
semifinals. Park play their first match of
the campaign at home against the
wounded Buffaloes. Police welcome
Kruisfontein at Police Park in a must-win
game for the Bobbies. Despatch will go all
out to stop a rampant Progress at the WJ
De Wet Stadium.
Hangklip beat Beaconhurst
The Hangklip High School first cricket
team played Beaconhurst last
w e e ke n d .
Beaconhurst batted first and were
bowled out for 116 in the 33rd over.
Jarryn Stride finished with the
excellent figures of 10 overs, five
wickets for 34, while Izak le Roux
bowled five overs and took two for 15
and Christo Erasmus took two for 20 in
his five overs.
After a good start with the bat,
Hangklip lost three quick wickets but
Jarryn Stride and Damian van Zyl
steadied the innings and Hangklip won
the match in the 21st over, thanks to 45
not out by Stride, 22 by André Joubert
and 19 not out by Damian van Zyl.
Five triathletes from Komani took
London last weekend.
The triathlon, known to be one of the
toughest challenges in the circuit,
consists of a 1.9km swim in the ocean, a
90.1km cycle rise and a 21.1km run.
According to Ryan Hoffman, one of the
veterans in the challenge, the stipulated
cut-off time was eight hours 30 minutes
with Ashton Schnehage from Komani
completing it in 05:25:51. Gilbert van Zyl
made it in 07:38:32, Ryan Hoffman in
06:37:50, Francois Rossouw in 06:45:23
Football kicks off at Queen’s
Queen’s College held
their first inter-house
soccer matches last
Friday, following an
announcement earlier
this month that soccer
would be introduced as
one of the school sports.
Teacher Ndumiso
Mkandla, said the aim
behind hosting
inter-house soccer was a
bid to have teams
representing the school
by the end of rugby
season. “Schools of our
calibre have decided to
introduce soccer,” he
said. Our first task is to
introduce it at
inter-house level. We are
looking to have soccer
three to four weeks
during the rugby season.
“Currently, we have
registered for an East
London tournament
during the June holidays
and we will send our U15
boys to Grahamstown
where they will
participate in a
tournament against St
Hoffman said it was his eighth year
participating in the Ironman and
described it as a gruelling course and
something that is definitely not for the
faint-hear ted.
“It was an exciting, good day.
Everything ran super well though the
weather wasn’t always on our side. We
had heavy winds for the cycle and the
sea was so rough that they had to
shorten the swim by about 400m. We
have had our challenges of trying to stay
fit and motivated and I take my hat off to
the other Komani athletes who made the
effort and are now reaping the rewards,”
Hoffman said.
“This is very good considering that we
have nowhere to really swim either than
training in a pool.”
Andrew’s College.
“When we started this,
the main aim was to
afford the boys a variety
of sporting activities,
particularly in summer. In
the winter season the
boys are largely occupied
so it is not a problem,
but in summer we have
athletics and cricket,
hence the introduction of
soccer and basketball.
“Most importantly, we
wanted to give them
what they love. We
believe not all of them
wanted what we were
He said for the average person,
preparation had to be progressive for
great results.
“Training takes about seven hours
non-stop on foot and a person who takes
their training quite seriously, would at
least start six to seven months ahead of
time because at the actual event,
everything is done on your own steam
with no assistance from anybody.”
Hoffman said the biggest part of being
an Ironman was the support they got
from their families.
“They brave the blistering weather and
get to endure everything that comes with
it. You’re the Ironman collecting the
medal, but I take my hat off to the wives,
husbands and children because you put
a lot on hold to do this.”
of fe r i n g , ” he said.
Mkandla said the boys
were divided into three
age groups; U15, U17 and
U19. They played three
matches, with Beswick
winning 2-0 in the first
game against Russell
House.
The second game
commenced with
Beswick going
head-to-head with Mallet
House, with Beswick
winning 2-1 on penalties.
Mallet played the last
match of the day against
Russell House, winning
1-0 on penalties.
He said the
inter-house soccer
matches were set to
continue today (February,
1) and next Friday to form
a team and identify the
strongest players.
easier. Many thanks to Julian
Thompson and all involved in
procuring the mower. All the golfers
will enjoy the great greens that this
machine is sure to produce.
