This month’s artist was born destined for
Hollywood. He was raised in New Symnra
Beach and surrounding areas but it was
apparent from an early age that something
was different about Dekker. Like most artists,
his brain seemed to wander throughout
the universe in search of future endeavors
that no one had thought of before. These
thoughts, and a eye for detail, led him out
to the West Coast to dabble in short films
and commercials. This lasted for a few years.
Missing family and recently married to his
bride Julia, who is a brilliant artist herself,
Dekker decided to give Florida another
chance.
The venture didn’t last long, as they were
both destined for the big city life. In the
short time they were in the area, Dekker
created quite a stir. From having the first sushi
bar on Flagler Avenue in Smyrna Beach
to helping open a surf and skate shop and
another restaurant, it was clear that Dekker
had a true vision of things that could work.
Perhaps his best idea was the “Shark Attack
Roll”, which was launched the same time
as a 3D shark movie that was shown in a
parking lot on a huge screen for all to see.
At the time, everybody made a big fuss.
How dare someone glorify the fact that New
Smyrna Beach was the shark bite capital of
the world? He took quite a bit of flak for that
ingenious idea.
Nowadays, every store and shop has
t-shirts, coffee mugs and bumper
stickers claiming what he already
knew years ago: Sharks sell!
