CML to expand
Hilltop Library

Officials at the Columbus Metropolitan
Library (CML) want to grow and adapt
with the constantly changing community.
In order to do so, the library has
announced plans to renovate and expand
the Hilltop Library.
The Hilltop Library, located at 511 S.
Hague Ave., was constructed in 1996 and
has 20,000 square feet of space. The renovation
and expansion project is expected to
add an additional 10,000 to 12,000 square
feet of space. The board of trustees for
CML selected Gresham Smith as the
architect for the project.
According to Ben Zenitsky, marketing
and communications specialist for CML,
the most popular programs at the Hilltop
Library would receive a boost with this
expansion project.
“We are going to enhance the offerings
around young minds,” said Zenitsky. “This
means more space and programs for children
and teens.”
One of the most popular programs at
the Hilltop branch is the Homework Help
Program. The library offers after-school
homework help at all its branches. It helps
students succeed in school by offering staff
and volunteer assistance, spaces to study
or learn, computers and printers, school
supplies and resource books.
“Homework Help is big at the Hilltop
Library and it will get a boost,” said
Zenitsky.
In addition to an enhanced area for children,
the expansion would provide more
meeting room space, designated quiet
areas and more public computers.
The estimated cost of the Hilltop
Library renovation and expansion project
is $11.5 million, according to Zenitsky.
That is part of a $77 million CML project
to renovate or rebuild its aging or outgrown
facilities. CML is funding the projects
through operational savings,
fundraising and the sale of bonds.
The library system is completing its
first phase of a building program, which
renovated or rebuilt 10 of its 23 libraries.
The Hilltop Library project is included in
the second phase of CML projects.

One of Simon’s most celebrated comedies,
the subject is a dinner party gone

The play takes place at a townhouse
where the participants have gathered for
a 10th anniversary celebration. The
group of young professionals, all up-andcoming,
includes lawyers, an accountant,
a psychiatrist, a politician, and the host
of a cooking show.

Prairie Township has hired its new
administrator.
Rob Peters will serve as the new township
administrator for Prairie Township,

City gives aid to recovery club

Aid is coming from the city of Columbus
for a pillar of addiction services in the
Hilltop.
The Desert Island Club is an addiction
recovery center located in the Hilltop that
holds addiction meetings seven days per
week and serves about 30,000 people per
year.
Leaders from the Desert Island Club
approached councilman Michael Stinziano
about funding for the final phase of repairs
from a fire in August 2015.
Following the request for funding,
Stinziano reached out to councilwoman
Priscilla Tyson to help get the social services
organization to move through the correct
channels to apply for funding.
In the end, the Desert Island Club
secured a grant for $35,500 to repair the

plex on Galloway Road,” Peters said. “I
also was interested in the economic development
with Broad Street and the new I-
270 interchange project.”
The former director of economic development
for the city of Streetsboro, Peters is
interested in using those skills to continue
grow the township.
“Once I get settled and complete some of
these projects that are already in progress,
I will start evaluating other opportunities
for economic development in the community,”
Peters said. “I also will look at what
the community needs are and projects that
will meet those needs.”
Currently, the township has several
projects under way. Among these projects
is the Galloway Road Sports Complex. This
111-acre complex will feature baseball
fields, soccer fields, a walking trail, a fishing
pond and a concession’s stand.
“If we have a good growing season, we
anticipate some of the fields will be open
for limited use in late summer 2019,”
Peters said. “Phase two also is currently
under way, which includes working on
traffic improvements.”
The township is continuing to explore
the idea of creating a community garden
on township-owned property at 161 Cole
Road.
“I have seen a preliminary design of the
proposed facility, but nothing has been
finalized,” Peters said. “We are still evaluating
what the best use is for this property.”
The 20-acre property offers plenty of
space to develop a community garden, but
there is limited parking, as well as water
access issues. One solution for accessing
water could be having a water tank on the
property that gardeners can use to water
the plants.
Organizers have discussed keeping the
roof of their facility near the corner of
Sullivant Avenue and South Wilson Road.
“The Desert Island Club is vital for the
Hilltop,” said Stinziano, former state house
representative of the district which houses
the social services organization. “They
don’t brag about what they do. They have
the Hilltop blue collar mentality.”
The fire, which was the result of a
break-in, caused tens of thousands of dollars
in damage. The last item needing
repair to fully restore the building to its
pre-fire condition is the roof.
“We hope that this grant can help them
focus on helping people instead of worrying
about money,” said Stinziano. “The Desert
Island Club is immensely important. I
don’t know where else westside residents
would go. No other place has that community
trust.”

and eventually having classes where
they use township plots to teach participants
how to grow their own produce.
The township trustees had discussed
having a community garden at Evergreen
Terrace and Carl Frye Park, but because of
zoning and restrictions in these neighborhoods,
these locations did not work.
At the same property, township leadership
have also discussed creating a dog
park and natural play area. However,
according to Prairie Township Community
Center Director James Gant, the township
would need grants to create these new
recreation locations.
The township also has made progress
with their partners on the I-270 interchange
project related to the maintenance
of the interchange.
“We have made progress in terms of
maintenance on this project and are moving
forward with bidding out this project,”
Peters said. “We are looking forward to
working with Franklin Township,
Franklin County and our other partners.”
The new West Broad Street and I-270
interchange project would improve the
landscaping around the West Broad Street
and I-270 interchange. The project is a collaboration
between Franklin Township,
Prairie Township, Franklin County,
Hollywood Casino, Columbus, Weston
Vision and Haydocy.
The project will include adding landscaping,
LED lighting over the underpass
and sculptures to the interchange. The
annual maintenance of the interchange
will cost between $30,000 and $60,000 a
year and organizers are looking for eight
partners to pay approximately $4,500 to
$7,500 each per year for the next 20 years.

At the Jan. 28 board of education meeting,
food services supervisor Lisa Hamrick
announced that the department will soon
be making the transition to the online portal.
“We are very excited about this,” she
told the board.
According to Hamrick, the department
will be adding point of sale capabilities that
will allow parents to have access to account
activities and balances, including those
who request free or reduced breakfast and
lunches.
“Having one system to log onto will really
speed up the process and make it more
efficient,” she said.
Though an emphasis will be placed on
online applications, Hamrick said they will
not do away with paper applications.
“We will still be allow those,” she said.
There will, however, be the elimination
of PayPAMS as the department transitions
to the Infinite Campus.
“We will no longer be using those,” said
Hamrick.
The transition to the Infinite Campus
will come at the beginning of August,
weeks before the start of the 2019/20 school
year. Hamrick said they didn’t want to
make the switch during a school year that
was already in progress.
The district began using the Infinite
Campus in 2012 as a way to allow parents
access to their children’s academic reports
and class schedules, and to update emergency
contact information through online
tools and applications. It can now also be
used to update medications, health information,
pay school fees and contact teachers.
In related food services news, Hamrick
said more students are eating breakfast
and lunch.
“Our numbers continue to grow for
breakfast and lunch,” she said.
According to Hamrick, more than 6,900
students eat breakfast daily (an average of

She credited the food service cooks and
staff for the continued increase in breakfast
and lunch participation.
“I cannot be more proud of our staff,”
Hamrick said. “They work really hard.”
Hamrick also spoke of the pilot café that
was established earlier this year at Grove
City High School.
“I think it is going over really well,” she
said of the ‘Greyhound Ground Café,’ which
serves hot and cold drinks during breaking
and lunch hours.
Board member David Donofrio asked
whether the café would be expanded to
each of the high schools in the coming
years.
“If things go well, we will consider looking
at the other high schools,” she said.
Hamrick added that it was piloted at
Grove City High School because there was
more of a need for it there.
In other news, transportation supervisor
Tim Cox gave an update on the department.
According to Cox, the department is
running smoothly and inspections are in
progress for all of the buses in their fleet.
He also presented a snapshot with the
average number of students, runs, routes
and miles traveled per day. Cox said the
buses transport more than 15,000 students
per day, the fleet averages more than
16,000 miles per day, and there are more
than 180 routes driven per day.
During his report, he also announced
that the First Time Riders event will be
held on Aug. 10 at Central Crossing High
School from 9 a.m. to noon.
“We’re going to make it a one-day event,
so we’ll see how that goes,” he said.

“Free Solo” should climb to your must see list
I remember the moment when word broke that Alex
Honnold had made history by becoming the first individual
to free solo El Capitan, a 3,000 foot high granite
monolith nestled in the famed Yosemite National
Park. I was flipping through the news stations, wondering
what fresh horror this world had to offer, when
the chyron announced this historic event. I did not,
and still do not, know much about big-wall climbing
and those who do it, but I was swept up in this achievement,
cognizant of this feat of human skill and celebrating
in the fact that this person realized a dream
and was alive to share the story.
In the weeks that followed, however, I forgot the
most important detail. I could tell you that someone
recently climbed El Capitan without the use of a rope
or other safety gear but I would have had to rack my
brain to remember the name of the man who did it.
Then came the film that documented his journey.
“Free Solo,” a National Geographic feature which has
only been shown in IMAX, puts you right there with
Honnold as he makes his attempt. It’s frightening,
dazzling, mind-boggling, exhilarating and it makes
sure that you (and I!) will never forget his name again.
It begins by introducing us, the general public, to
Alex Honnold, a 30-something year old who predominately
lives inside of a camper. Since his introduction
to wall and rock climbing as a teen, Honnold has been
travelling the world, honing his Spiderman-like skills
on some of the most challenging granite terrain in the
world — most of them done without the use of safety
equipment.
At first, he tries to explain what attracts him to this
dangerous activity but comes to the realization that he
cannot get others to understand. He is fully aware that
he may die while free soloing, but to him his chances
are no greater than getting in a car and being hit by a
drunk driver.
The dream of free soloing El Capitan, he says, came
to him some time ago. As a famous free soloist, he was
constantly asked about making an attempt during
interviews but was always cagey in his answers. He
said this was done so there was no undue pressure or
expectations put on him but once he got it into his
mind that climbing El Capitan was something he
wanted to do, he went all out to achieve his dream.
For more than three years, Alex and his fellow
expert climbing friends mapped out his path to the top.
He would begin by taking the Freerider route and following
all 33 pitches with special attention being paid

to ‘The Boulder Problem,’ which
is considered the most treacherous
part of the route due to its
pencil-thin handholds and slippery
wall that is near completely
vertical. After that was completed,
he would then traverse
another thousand or so feet to
make his way to the Enduro Pitch and its sharp,
exposed corners and sculpt his body to them as he continues
to ascend. After, it is all mind over the prospect
of celebration until he traverses another couple hundred
feet to the top. Or so they desperately hope.
“Free Solo” documents these trial and error runs —
all done with their safety equipment fully in place —
and then takes us into Alex’s mind as he comes home
to write about which moves would work best. It also
shows us the toll his dream takes on his family and
friends, one of which is co-director Jimmy Chin. Like
his fellow climbers and filmmakers, Chin knows the
importance of documenting this attempt but he also
knows he would be on hand to witness the death of his
best friend should a finger or soft sole slip.
Though the outcome of Alex’s free solo attempt is
now known, it doesn’t take away from that sense of
suspense as he makes the decision to attempt El
Capitan. In fact, the film amplifies it through up-close
shots of Alex’s rosin encrusted hands gripping barely
there grooves, the muscles in his legs stretching as he
balances and grips the rock wall, and the bottomless
view of ground below.
“Free Solo” is going to be tough for some people to
get through — the camera sweeps along the landscape
at dizzying heights, the mid-section that lulls with
relationship drama, the lack of understanding of why
he does the things he does — but if you think you can
handle it go see it before it leaves the theater. “Free
Solo” is a terrific documentary offering a glimpse into
the mindset of a thrill-seeking man few will ever want
to emulate, but one that many ought to get to know.
