Concern over cycleway plans
• By Georgia O’Connor-Harding
BUSINESSES AND residents
could be hit hard by a major
realignment of a street in
Riccarton to make way for a
cycleway.
The removal of on-street carparking,
cul-de-sacs, intersection
changes and the shifting of
bus stops could be on the cards
for Elizabeth St as part of a $39
million cycleway.
The changes are part of the
city council’s proposed South
Express Major Cycle Route
which will run from Templeton
through to the central city.
The route will travel through
Hornby, Hei Hei, Sockburn, Upper
Riccarton and Riccarton.
The potential changes have
sparked concerns for those in
the area.
The city council is calling for
public feedback on the proposal,
which is the next stage in the
$252 million major cycleway
programme.
Tony Pearson, owner of
Hamilton Motors (1995), which
is located on Elizabeth St near
Matipo St, said the proposed
loss of car parks is going to affect
his business.
“It will affect my income, it
might affect my employment
. . . there are only three of us
POTENTIAL CHANGES: Residents and businesses are
concerned over the proposed changes to Elizabeth St to make
way for the South Express Major Cycle Route.
now. Realistically it could go
down to two,” he said.
On-street parking spaces are
due to be reduced at the Matipo
St intersection along with shortterm
parking and loading zones
installed.
Mr Pearson said he can fit
eight cars onto the property and
a further six cars in the work
shop.
“That is not enough. We are
turning around more cars than
that. We need the accessibility
of putting cars on the road,” he
said.
Division St dairy owner Rae
Wang is also worried she will
lose business due to the changes.
“We think it is a waste of our
taxpayer money. It is not necessary
and not many people will
use it,” she said.
But city council planning
and delivery transport manager
Lynette Ellis said the anticipated
cycle volumes using the Riccarton
section of the cycleway is
1900 per day.
A Riccarton Community
Church spokesman said it is
still gathering information but
it does have concerns about the
likely impact of the changes.
Nearly 1000 people use the
church’s facilities throughout
the week for services, playgroups,
craft groups and its fruit
and vege co-op.
It averages about 370 people
for its weekly Sunday services.
Central Riccarton Residents’
Association acting chairwoman
Joscelyne Silcock said it is positive
for residents to be able to
come out of their door and go
onto a cycleway.
But she said she hasn’t decided
if she is for or against the cycleway
due to car parking being
a problem in the area.
“I can see cycleways being a
positive but then I am thinking
of all this money and there are
still parts of the city that really
haven’t had their fair share since
the earthquakes,” Mrs Silcock
said.
The CRRA will be making a
submission on the issue.
