Now
Fire rages, homes at risk
challenge – are you too?
Judith McInnes, 77 – Mrs
McInnes, who is retired, says
her participation in the 14km
event is “not a hardcore thing,
just for fun.” It will not be her
first time in the
City2Surf, having
completed the
event six or seven
times previously,
both walking
and jogging.“I do
Judith
McInnes
both walking and
jogging and it’s
just a challenge.”
Mrs McInnes goes jogging twice
a week. She likes to explore the
Harry Ell Walkway, Sign of the
Kiwi, Sign of the Takahe and
Godley Head tracks. “Often in
the past, I have walked with
friends. A friend of mine is
walking the 6km and then we
will have a coffee afterwards,” she
said.
Josiah Beach, 30, Anna
Beach, 30, and Ezra Beach,
16 – The trio will take on the
14km event this year. Husband
and wife, Josiah and Anna, have
completed the event a handful
of times previously, but it will be
Ezra’s first time doing the 14km.
“He’s just brought some new
RIVALRY: Ezra, Anna and Josiah Beach. (Right) – Geoff
Sutton and Angela Penn.
running shoes especially for it,”
said his older brother Josiah, who
has run up Rapaki Track a couple
of times to prepare. “I think I’ll
really get started on my training
next month.” Mrs Beach ran her
first City2Surf in 2009, when
training for a half marathon and
“never looked back.”
Angela Penn, 49,
and Geoff Sutton, 42 – The
brother and sister duo aren’t
letting the fact they are getting
older slow the down. The pair
are running the 6km event in the
City2Surf together. “I’m going to
be 50-years-old soon, I might as
well keep going while I am still
standing and don’t have many
injuries,” said Mrs Penn. Back
in October, the pair ran in the
Pegasus Fun Run 6km event and
hope to run the 10km event at the
Christchurch Marathon in June.
They are both driven by the hope
that one day they might have
grandchildren, who they would
like to be fit and healthy for. “It’s
more about getting out there and
enjoying it. I am really looking
forward to spending some time
with my brother, it’s good to hang
out,” Mrs Penn.
Roger Comber, 70 – Back
in his youth, Mr Comber took
part in two halfmarathons
in
Ashburton and
Timaru. Now
retired from his
job as an english
Roger
Comber
teacher, he said
he has decided
to get back into
running. He enjoys running
around the streets near where he
lives and often goes to Les Mills
gym to stay in shape. “I like the
City2Surf because it is an easy
distance and it’s a popular run to
take part in.”
James Ferguson, 32,
Harewood – Mr Ferguson
will take on the 14km event in
the City2Surf. It will be his first
time doing the event and he
admits he’s a “first-time runner,”
opting to keep fit
through rugby
and other sport.
The event will
help him prepare
for more running
later in the year
James
Ferguson
when he takes on
the Buller Gorge
half marathon
and the Saint Clair Vineyard
half marathon in Blenheim.
He is enjoying his training –
somewhat. “It’s a fair distance
the 14km, but I’ve got to get fit
somehow.” Before and after work
a couple of times a week, Mr
Ferguson has been challenging
himself to run distances
between 10km and 14km. He
will accompanied by a group of
friends who will also run in the
event next month.
Pauline De Wit, 66 – Mrs
De Wit isn’t keen to slow down
anytime soon. Previously, she
has run the 6km event in the
City2Surf but next month she
decided to “push the boat out”
and do the 14km
run. “I felt I could
have gone further
so I am keen to
try the 14km.
I have seen the
wonderful sense
Pauline
De Wit
of achievement
gained from an
event such as
this and wanted
to be part of it . . . I am getting
older and I want to achieve
something like this before age
takes me over.” Mrs De Wit has
been training with her friend Jill,
who she has done the event with
before. The pair enjoy after-work
walks around the Burwood
Wetlands. “The Wetlands takes
approximately 40 minutes, plus
walks at the weekend along the
Heathcote River. Also due to the
hot weather I have been enjoying
swimming at Corsair Bay,
Magazine Bay and at Sumner.”
