MORE LIME scooters will be
seen on Christchurch streets.
A city council committee
yesterday recommended the
California-based company’s
permit be extended to one year
with an $86.25 annual rental
fee.
It will also be able to boost its
fleet from 700 scooters to 1000.
There will be a city-wide limit
of 1600 e-scooters, although
that number may be adjusted.
The city council will get
the final say on approving the
committee’s recommendations.
Too many
parents
calling
police
on their
children
• By Matt Slaughter
POLICE ARE becoming
increasingly frustrated with
parents asking them to sort out
their children’s tantrums, hissy
fits and yelling matches.
At least one call a month
is being made to police from
parents who are not able to deal
with their kids
behaviour. Some
are even phoning
111. Sergeant Jim
Currie said it is
wasting hours of
valuable police
time.
“It’s taking Jim Currie
our resources
away from things like dealing
with family harm and burglaries
where people really need us,” he
said.
Police had received calls from
parents of children as young as
nine who had reported issues
as insignificant as their children
refusing to turn off their gaming
consoles, Sergeant Currie said.
He said the solution to the
conflicts was not to call police,
but for parents “to be parents,
take responsibility and set clear
rules to make it clear what the
consequences are.”
TRUSTING ELDERLY people
Police say the problem is
In Leeston, an elderly man’s
OFFERS HAVE poured in
for the teenage boy who was
held up at knifepoint for the
mountain bike he had saved
up for.
Last week, The Star reported
Sam Bryson, 13 was
walking with his bike along
Centaurus Rd, Huntsbury,
on February 9, when he
was approached by a man
holding a large kitchen
knife, who then stole his
bike.
“Give me your f**king
bike, boy,” said the robber,
who was described
as Polynesian and in
his late 20s.
Several offers have
been made from the public to
purchase Sam a new bike, or
help pay for one.
However, Sam’s parents, Stewart
and Anna Bryson, were able
to get a new bike through their
insurance.
“He’s good; he’s had a
chance to ride it. He tried to
ride it to school and I said: ‘No
way.’ It’s actually a much better
bike, the new one, so he’s a
happy kid.”
“It’s funny because Sam delivers
Bryson.
Limes to stay for another year
•From page 1
More than a quarter of
Christchurch residents made
400,000 trips on the scooters
since they were launched on a
trial basis in October, for which
Lime paid $136.
Feedback on the
scooters has been
overwhelmingly
positive. A city council
survey found 93 per
cent of users called for
them to stay.
Committee
chairwoman and city
councillor Pauline
Cotter said the scooters
were bringing great
economic benefits to the city.
“They’ve certainly arrived with
a whoosh and a roar,” she said.
However, Lime wrote to the
city council to put forward a
number of different proposals,
including “exclusivity” in the
city in exchange for it paying
the council $83 per scooter
– $132,800 a year for 1600
scooters.
It also put forward proposals
for a reduced rate of $49 per
scooter for 1000 scooters, a tax
of $0.05 per trip, exclusivity
for four years for $200,000 or
removing the 1600 cap.
However, city council
staff said: “This process is
not a negotiation, nor is it a
commercial arrangement with
a particular operator. Any
concepts of exclusivity
raise several issues
around anticompetitive
practices.”
City councillor
Mike Davidson
opposed allowing
Lime to increase its
fleet to 1000 – he
wanted the number
capped at 800.
“It’s a bit of a shame.
I think if we limited Lime to
50 per cent then potentially we
would have encouraged other
operators to come forward.
Wouldn’t it be great if we
actually had a local provider
instead of an international one?”
he said.
Cr Cotter said there was an
opening for another operator to
come in with 600 scooters.
The city council has had
expressions of interest from
other e-scooter companies,
although none had applied for a
trading permit.
Moore reveals legal costs
• By Julia Evans
FORMER MAYOR Garry Moore
has revealed how much it cost to
fight legal action taken against
him by a senior city council boss.
Mr Moore was sued last year
for $500,000 by the head of the
city council’s three waters and
waste John Mackie.
Mr Mackie alleged he was defamed
over comments Mr Moore
made, suggesting Mr Mackie
was pushing the interests of
pro-chlorine group Water New
Zealand.
The legal action was dropped,
but Mr Moore revealed this week
it had cost him $20,000 in legal
fees.
The lawsuit and allegations
were dropped after discussions
between the pair mediated by
former SCIRT value manager
Rod Cameron at the end of last
year, said Mr Moore.
“The case was a result of a
misunderstanding. All it took
was a few conversations and we
found out we got on famously,”
Mr Moore said.
“I’m interested in public debate
about public issues and that’s
what I will continue doing.
This particular debate cost me
$20,000, usually it just costs me a
beer or a coffee.”
Garry Moore John Mackie
Mr Mackie sought $500,000
in damages as he said Mr Moore
made defamatory allegations
that he was pushing the interests
of pro-chlorination group Water
New Zealand.
Sources have confirmed that
Mr Mackie has resigned from his
role at the city council.
However, a city council spokesperson
said it could not comment
on specific employment cases for
privacy reasons. Mr Mackie did
not respond to questions from
The Star.
Mr Mackie was appointed
head of three waters and waste in
2016, which runs the city’s water
supply, stormwater and sewerage
systems.
Mr Mackie is a board member
of Water New Zealand. In October,
the city council canned its
membership of the organisation,
due to concerns it was pushing
for mandatory chlorination.
The three waters and waste
team was also criticised in a draft
report, which investigated how
the city’s drinking water came to
need chlorination.
Mr Mackie asked for changes
in the final report to say his unit
had been under-resourced.
Mayor Lianne Dalziel said
chlorinating the city’s water may
have been avoided if councillors
had been made aware of the issue
with wellheads sooner.
•From page 1
There were times when calls
from concerned parents were
justified but small household
disputes were too commonly
reported.
“It ranges from tantrums
and not getting off the Xbox to
actually physically threatening
the parents. The physically
threatening ones we’re quite
happy to deal with, but not these
ones where the kid won’t do
the dishes or won’t get off the
Xbox.”
Christchurch psychologist
Sushila Deo said calling the
police was serious, and if parents
were doing it for unnecessary
reasons it could damage how
children viewed authority and
discipline.
Calling the police on children
is the worst way to change their
behaviour and extreme threats
like this should almost never be
necessary, Mrs Deo said.
She said parenting is about
making an effort to spend time
with children away from the
things that cause conflict and
“giving them options for some
replacement behaviours.”
“They will always learn more
Stadium ideas
will be set
out this week
• By Julia Evans
IDEAS FOR the design of the city’s
long-awaited stadium will be set
out at meetings held this week.
Potential users and interest
groups are meeting at stakeholder
forums to discuss the stadium’s
investment case, offer feedback
and ideas.
“Representatives of sporting
organisations, business, events and
entertainment and key community
groups have been involved throughout
the process,” city council
general manager citizens and community
Mary Richardson said.
The city council has been working
on the investment case for the
stadium planned for the block
bound by Madras, Barbadoes,
Hereford and Tuams Sts after it
was given the green light in April.
It brought forward $253 million
in the Long Term Plan to fund
the stadium and the Government
ear-marked an additional $220
million, on top of the $86.7 million
spent to purchase the land.
• By Sophie Cornish
JESSIE ALABONE is 39,258
days old today.
That makes her the oldest living
person in Canterbury.
To save you reaching for
the calculator, Mrs Alabone is
107-years-old and 175 days.
Previously, Howard Buss was
the oldest living person in Canterbury.
He died on January 25, aged
107 years and 214 days.
Born on August 22, 1911, Mrs
Alabone sits at number 58 on
Gerontology Wiki’s list of the
oldest New Zealanders to ever
live.
Only two other people on the
list older than Mrs Alabone are
still alive.
Lola de la Haye, born in November
1909, is 109-years-old
and lives in New Plymouth.
Mabel Jenkins is said to be living
in the Waikato at 110-yearsold,
but her age is yet to be
verified online.
Mrs Alabone has seven grandchildren,
15 great-grandchildren
and eight great-great-grandchildren.
children of William and Mary
McDonald, who arrived from
Mr McDonald was a wellknown
saddler and their family
had a long association in the harness
racing industry.
Two of her youngest siblings
are still alive and her mother
died aged 102.
Mrs Alabone attended St
Joseph’s Cathedral School in
Papanui and completed high
school at Christchurch Technical
College.
“She loved school, she was a
great student, good at maths
and had a great memory. She
had attention to detail, played
the piano and liked the finer
things in life,” said Mrs Smaill.
Mrs Alabone began working in
a shoe shop at age 15. She worked
at Strange and Co, Farmers, and
Stewart Robinson’s shoe shop. She
eventually managed a retail store.
She met Percy ‘Bill’ Alabone
at Fraser’s dancing school and
in 1932, they married at St
Mathew’s Church, St Albans,
when she was 21.
The couple went on to have two
children, Diana and Billy.
Mrs Alabone enjoyed hobbies
such as embroidery, baking and
travelling, was a capable seamstress
and a passionate gardener.
Mrs Smaill said her grandmother
attributed her memory to
her lack of multi-tasking.
“She liked to focus on finishing
one job then starting another
as well as keeping everything in
moderation,” said Mrs Smaill.
Her motto in life was: ‘What
will be, will be.’
“She never, ever looked to the
past and she never looked to the
future. She lives in the here and
now,” said Mrs Smaill.
Mrs Alabone was still driving
when she was 100 and lived
independently until 102.
Professor’s burglary case closed
THE CURIOUS case of the
burgled professor is no closer to
being resolved, as a year-long
police investigation wrapped up
with an inconclusive result.
Canterbury University professor
Anne-Marie Brady suffered
a number of suspicious burglaries
in early 2018 that she – and
other scholars and intelligence
analysts – have
said were likely
a response to
her critical
work investigating
China’s
foreign influence
activities.
Anne-Marie
Brady
The investigation,
which
stretched for
almost a year, involved the
police’s secretive National
Security Investigation Team,
international law-enforcement
body Interpol and spy agency
the New Zealand Security and
Intelligence Service. The latter
agency also swept Dr Brady’s
home and university office for
bugs.
Yesterday, a statement today
police said they had been unable
to resolve the case.
“Police have taken these
incidents very seriously and a
lengthy, detailed and extensive
investigation has been
conducted. This has involved
all necessary police resources
including detailed forensic
analysis, interviews and expert
advice.
“The burglaries and other
matters reported remain unresolved
at this time. The
investigation is now at a point
where there are no further lines
of inquiry to pursue unless new
information becomes available.”
Dr Brady told the New
Zealand Herald she had been
informed of the investigation’s
conclusion on Monday, and was
disappointed with the result.
Landlords
Insulate against fines!
By now, landlords, property managers
and most tenants will be aware of the
changes to the Residential Tenancy Act
concerning home insulation, requiring all
rental properties to have adequate ceiling
and under floor insulation installed, where
practicable, by 30 June 2019.
However, many landlords and property
managers may not be aware they could be
liable for a $4,000 fine (per non-compliant
property), payable to the tenants, if their
investment properties do not meet the
standard in time. With an estimated 125,000
rental properties still requiring better
insulation, these owners and property
managers are being urged to take action now
to avoid the impending rush.
Local long-established insulation specialists
EnergySmart are a selected service
provider for the government’s EECA (Energy
Efficiency and Conservation Authority)
insulation programme, and currently offer
both landlords and homeowners great
savings to better insulate their properties.
The company offers free property
assessments with an insulation Compliance
Certificate for the property if the existing
insulation already complies. If insulation
is required, they provide a Compliance
Report and quote to complete the work.
Extended home energy assessments are
also available, covering heat pumps and LED
lights if required.
EnergySmart are one of the largest
manufacturers and installers of insulation
products in New Zealand and supply a
range of home solutions including their
own insulation brands Terra Lana wool and
PolyKing polyester, as well as supplying Pink
Batts fibreglass insulation. All carry a 50
year warranty.
Their installers are fully trained, clean
and tidy, and their work is audited both
internally as well as by the government, so
you are assured of the highest standard of
workmanship.
EnergySmart has easy payment options
including no deposit and 36 months
interest free, meaning you can insulate your
property from only $12 per week. Landlords
can insulate now, take advantage of current
discounts, and beat the rush.
While insulation in rental properties is now
a legal requirement for landlords, they will
also have the satisfaction of knowing their
tenants are living in a warmer healthier, more
energy-efficient home, and consequently
are more likely to stay.
“I am disappointed that in
spite of the hard work of individual
officers the police have
not identified the culprit,” she
said.
Dr Brady, an internationally
respected academic, emerged as
a public figure in late 2017 after
publishing her Magic Weapons
paper using New Zealand
as a case study in mapping out
China’s international influence
campaigns.
Her work focused political donations,
board appointments for
ex-politicians and their families,
and connections between these
and China’s external influence
agency the United Front Works
Department. Following publication
Brady has travelled to brief
officials in Ottawa, Washington,
London, Canberra and elsewhere.
The burglary of her home on
February 14 saw devices – laptops
and a burner phone – used
to research the paper taken, but
other valuables – including jewellery
and cash left in the open –
ignored. The following day, her
office was also broken into.
In November her mechanic,
unaware of the ongoing probe
into the case, reported he believed
her family’s car had been
“tampered with” after finding
both front tyres had dangerously
low pressure. Police folded
this claim into their investigation,
the New Zealand Herald
reported.
Early on, Brady had classed
the burglaries as harassment in
response to her work on China.
Days after the burglaries
she told an Australian
parliamentary committee her
earlier research on Antarctic
politics had seen pressure put on
her employer, and more recently
people she associated with in
China had been questioned
by Ministry of State Security
officials.
Campaigner not giving up battle
• By Julia Evans
GRAHAM TATE returned from
Zimbabwe in the 1990s with the
intention of enjoying his twilight
years.
He loves boogie-boarding and
bowls.
But for the last 11 months, the
84-year-old has been battling a
sort of David and Goliath fight
against bureaucracy.
“He enjoys a challenge,” his
wife Marion said.
It’s been a month since the
Goliath in this situation – Environment
Canterbury – stopped
the Orbiter running along
Philpotts Rd, Mairehau, due to
Northern Corridor changes on
QE II Drive.
But the bus was caught regularly
by the elderly residents of the
Diana Isaac Retirement Village.
They now face a 1km walk to
the nearest stop on Innes Rd.
Talking about it brings tears to
his eyes, which Mr Tate bats away
with the handkerchief from his
pocket.
“You’ve got to understand in
a place like this there are a lot of
old people who can’t think about
much other than the little day to
day things.”
They pay rates, have medical
appointments and need to get
groceries – the bus service is essential,
he said.
He can drive, but wears hearing
aids. He has found it hard going
to public meetings because he
can’t hear everything that’s said.
FIGHT: Eightyfour-year-old
Graham Tate
says he won’t
give up on
having the
Orbiter bus
service returned
for residents
of Diana Isaac
Retirement
Village.
But Mr Tate doesn’t let that stop
him. There are the more than
350 residents who have had their
independence “ripped” away with
the loss of the bus access.
To become a resident at the village,
you have to be over 70, but
most are over 80 – there’s even
Jessie Alabone who, at 107, is the
oldest person in Canterbury (see
her story on page 6).
“I’ve had to stand up to get any
activity. I don’t like to have residents
who have no other option
stymied.”
Mr Tate is leading the charge
with the support of Ryman
Healthcare, which runs the
retirement village. He has lobbied
the city council, local councillor
Pauline Cotter and MP Duncan
Webb on top of organising a protest
outside ECan’s building with
150 pensioners and a petition
with 650 signatures.
“It’s become as much of a personal
crusade.”
While its not the first challenge
Mr Tate has taken on, he said
its the one that has taken the
greatest toll.
Thursday February 14 2019 9
for independence
He lectured for “20-odd years”
at Lincoln University on farm
management and “extension” –
which is the process of bringing
about change in a community –
before working overseas.
“We went and worked with volunteer
services abroad in Africa
for some time and then I set up a
little business working in overseas
development, mainly involved in
bringing about change in rural
communities,” Mr Tate said.
He had contracts in more than
20 developing countries.
“There was a remote community
on the border of Mozambique and
I spent a lot of time with them
because they were largely ignored
by the Government. We managed
to place a planning officer from
New Zealand to help,” Mr Tate
said.
“So there’s nothing new to me
about bringing change. But this
feels more important . . . I thought
at the start this was going to be
good. Bringing about change usually
involves a personal relationship
with someone and I thought
we were achieving that.”
However, he said that is no
longer the case.
“It’s proving a bureaucracy that I
have always skirted around in the
past, but I’m very blocked here.”
ECan raised the idea of trialling
a service to take residents to
bus stops. But the vehicle would
have been run by volunteers from
the village.
“I was a supporter of that. But
it’s too complicated for a village
of this age, so its not a goer. We’ve
got to forget about that and get on
and find something else,” Mr Tate
said.
However, ECan has given up.
Senior manager of public transport
Stuart Gibbons said: “We’ve
run out of ideas.”
“We’ve offered alternatives and
RESIDENTS ARE rallying
to have suburbs left out of the
Shirley Boys’ and Avonside Girls’
High School zone permanently
included.
In April, the Ministry
of Education came up
with a compromise for
a 13-year transitional
zone that allows students
living in the current
zones around Richmond,
Shirley, Avonside, Dallington,
St Albans and
Edgeware to enrol at the
new multi-million QE II
Park campus.
The zone will be reviewed in
May, a month after students start
at the new school.
But residents from the excluded
suburbs have launched a petition,
which will be sent to the ministry
calling for the transitional zone to
be made permanent.
‘Were’ so disappointed’
• By Julia Evans
GRAHAM LAWN hasn’t been
behind the wheel of a car for
the last five years.
“It’s just old age, your mobility
becomes restricted,” he said.
But the 92-year-old resident
of Diana Isaac Retirement
Village says his independence
has been “ruined” since the
Orbiter stopped running along
Philpotts Rd.
Mr Lawn and his wife Lenore
relied on the bus for medical
appointments, shopping and
even had the odd trip out to
Sumner.
However, as they have to
use walking sticks or mobility
scooters, they cannot walk the
1km to Innes Rd.
Instead, Mr and Mrs Lawn
are having to taxi or simply not
go out.
“We have half price in the
taxi, but it’s just not the same.
You have to wait for it to come,
you can’t just go at your own
we haven’t been able to implement
those alternatives, so there’s really
not much to do.”
The solution the residents are
pushing for is rerouting the 44 bus
route down Philpotts Rd. It would
then do a turn and head back
towards Innes Rd.
But Mr Gibbon said it would
cost $100,000 and this, combined
with the time it would take to
construct, meant ECan did not see
this as a good option.
“We have explored alternative
ways of rerouting the 44 as
requested by the residents and
Ryman, however, it is not viable to
further pursue this at this time,”
Mr Gibbon said.
So far it has 100 signatures.
Dallington Residents Association
chairwoman Bebe Frayle said
it always planned to lobby for the
zone to be made permanent.
“But what kicked off our regrouping
was the info
that Shirley Boys’ has
closed their out-ofzone
roll as soon as it
opened,” she said.
SBHS closed its enrolments
for out-of-zone
students last month, two
months before it moves.
“For us, it’s all about
gathering support
and the plan would
be to talk to communities and
the school, mostly the people affected,”
she said.
Being permanently excluded
from the zone would have impact
on house prices, divide communities
and disrupt families.
“We’re placed in a very weird
Graham Lawn
pace,” he said.
Plus, Mr Lawn said the cost
was mounting up quickly.
“We’re so disappointed . . .
This is absolutely essential for
people like us. You could take
the Orbiter to Northlands or
The Palms and get anywhere in
the city. Now that’s gone.”
“We have invested considerable
effort in trying to identify a viable
and sustainable solution, but have
unfortunately not succeeded in
finding one that meets the needs
of all parties involved. We’ve now
reached the point where we have
exhausted the range of options
available to us.”
In the meantime, Ryman will
operate a village taxi and car
share scheme to make sure residents
can still get around from
next month.
However, the battle for the bus is
not over for the residents of Diana
Isaac.
“We’ll keep plugging,” Mr Tate
said.
School zone petition launched
Bebe Frayle
position and as residents, we
can’t say that this is our local
school. We don’t have one,” she
said.
“It’s a weird and unfair position
for families to be in.”
But Ministry of Education deputy
secretary sector enablement and
support Katrina Casey said the
changes made to the enrolment
schemes were to reflect their new
location.
“The enrolment schemes will
help Avonside Girls’ High School,
and Shirley Boys’ High School
make effective and efficient use
of their new schools and will
give them the ability to manage
future rolls and reduce the risk of
overcrowding,” she said.
Fire rages, homes at risk
Meth use leads to $12k payout to landlord
A TENANT who made off with
a stained glass window and
smoked methamphetamine in
her flat has been ordered to pay
almost $12,000 to her landlord.
Kerry Lee Harper was the
second Christchurch tenant in
a week to be hit with thousands
of dollars in damage claims at
the Tenancy Tribunal as a result
of meth contamination, New
Zealand Herald reported.
She must now hand over
$11,558 to Champagne Homes,
including $3145 for meth testing,
$800 for the replacement
of a stained glass window and
$5640 for cleaning and repainting
her rental.
With Harper failing to attend
the tribunal hearing, the adjudicator
backed all the claims put
forward by Champagne Homes.
The company said it had significantly
repaired the rental before
giving it to Harper, but that once
her tenancy ended, they found a
stained glass window removed
from an inside door and the
walls contaminated with meth.
Fronting the Tenancy Tribunal
in a separate hearing, fellow
Christchurch tenant Minna
O’Toole was also ordered to pay
$13,241 to her landlord Holmwood
Real Estate.
The company told the hearing
O’Toole or others had smoked
meth in the rental, leading to it
spending more than $12,000 on
meth testing and cleaning costs.
It said there were clear signs
O’Toole had been taking drugs
in the rental during the last six
months of her tenancy.
“The tenant’s behaviour
changed. She became irrational
and appeared cut off. Her eyes
rolled in her head and she could
not maintain eye contact,” the
landlord told the tribunal.
“While she had previously
kept the premises reasonably
clean and tidy, it became filthy.
There were little bags containing
marijuana and butane bottles
in the premises.”
Meth testing also showed
the rental exceeded contamination
levels of 15 µg/100cm²
currently used as a guideline after
being backed by the former chief
scientific adviser to the Prime
Minister Sir Peter Gluckman.
“In the circumstances, I
accept that the proposed decontamination
is necessary to
get the premises to a reasonably
clean and tidy state,” the adjudicator
wrote.
“The [damage] amounts
ordered are proved.”
Taggers run rampant in port
• By Louis Day
TAGGING IN Lyttelton is the
worst it’s been in 20 years – and
locals want something done
about it.
Their frustration has been
growing since the timeball
station was vandalised earlier this
month, adding to the growing list
of buildings and signs tagged in
the area.
Lyttelton Community
Association chairman Ken
Maynard said the current wave of
vandalism in the area is the worst
he has seen in 20 years of living
there.
“It seems to be getting worse.
The offensive ones like the
timeball are over the quality
street art where the taggers have
felt the need to make their own
contribution.”
Mr Maynard believes tagging
in the area has been getting
progressively worse since the
February 22, 2011, earthquake.
“The increase of derelict
buildings, which I think are more
susceptible to tagging than live
ones, have provided taggers with
a window of opportunity.”
Mr Maynard said the police
could only do so much to track
down taggers and it was the
VANDALISED: Lyttelton Community Association chairman Ken Maynard believes the
tagging done to the mural on the Eruption Brewing building (above) and the one across
from it (right) are just as offensive as the vandalism carried out at the timeball.
responsibility of the taggers’
parents or guardians to prevent
it from happening. Sergeant
Franco Lovrich said police need
the public’s help to identify the
perpetrators of what he described
as “mindless vandalism.”
“If anyone could identify
the tag or give us a name of a
potential suspect, we would
certainly follow up on that
information,” Sergeant Lovrich
said.
Eruption Brewing owner
Brendan Hyman said he was
devastated to see taggers had
defaced the mural on the side of
his microbrewery.
“I really don’t like tagging, but
I love street art, and the fact that
they have tagged over what was
a great piece of street art is quite
upsetting.”
Mr Hyman said it has been an
ongoing battle with taggers since
he opened the microbrewery last
year.
Lyttelton Coffee Company
owner Stephen Mateer said he has
to deal with tagging on his cafe
regularly. “I have got two to clean
off at the moment actually, but
there are some I quite like that I
might leave on the building.”
Community stalwart dies
• By Julia Evans
FORMER CITY councillor David
Cox has died after a long illness.
The 80-year-old Redcliffs
identity gave a lifetime of service
to the community including four
terms as a councillor and Hagley-
Ferrymead Community Board
member.
Mr Cox had Parkinson’s disease
for the last three-and-a-half years.
However, he died last week after a
battle with cancer.
His wife of 56 years Fiona said
he cared so much about the community
and was still working
with the library a month before
he passed away.
“He was living life pretty well
until just before Christmas. All
the family came for Christmas
and we had the best day ever,” she
said.
Mr Cox leaves behind children
and grandchildren, Sonia and
Peter Caird, Andrew and Sarah
Cox, James, Simon and Michael
Caird, and Annabel and Claudia
Cox.
He was the first chairman of the
Hagley-Ferrymead Community
Board in 1989 and held the Ferrymead
and Hagley-Ferrymead
seat on the city council for four
terms, before a final term on the
board.
Mr Cox retired from council
in 2013 but throughout his life he
was also a patron of the Redcliffs
Library, as well as chairman of
the Music Centre of Christchurch
and member on the board of the
Christchurch Symphony Orchestra.
He was involved in the Sumner
Lifeboat Institution, the Youth
DEDICATION: Former city councillor David Cox died last week.
Heritage Education Trust, a member
of the Court Theatre Trust
and a committee member for
Bromley Kindergarten, Christchurch
East School and Linwood
College.
Mr Cox was active in a number
of sports clubs including
Christchurch United, Ferrymead
Bays Football Club, Sumner
Cricket and Canterbury Sports
Foundation.
Ferrymead Bays wore black
armbands and held a minute’s
silence in his honour before their
game on Saturday.
The city council will also hold
a minute’s silence at its meeting
today.
City councillor Yani Johanson
worked with Mr Cox from 2001,
when he was first elected to the
board.
“He was a really hard-working
and dedicated servant to the community.
He was involved with
young sports people, volunteer
groups, the libraries. In terms of
his service to the community, he
was incredible.”
Linwood-Central-Heathcote
Community Board member Darrell
Latham said he was
a great adviser for board matters.
“He emailed and phoned me.
We met on several occasions at
functions and he offered great
advice and support. David Cox
has provided excellent service and
support to Christchurch city and
to his community. This will be his
enduring legacy.’’
A celebration of Mr Cox’s life
will be held at the Christchurch
$1m safety upgrade for dangerous intersection
THE CITY’S fourth most
dangerous junction could become
a T intersection in a bid to reduce
the number of crashes.
Plans for the $1 million safety
upgrade at the Middleton, Ilam
and Riccarton Rd intersection
have been revealed by the city
council.
Restricting Riccarton Rd from
Middleton Rd to left turns in and
out only, as well as narrowing
the road to allow more footpath
space for pedestrians has been
proposed.
It was ranked the city’s fourth
most dangerous, raking up 40
crashes with varying degree of
injury since 2011.
The left turn slip lanes from
Ilam Rd into Riccarton Rd would
also be removed.
BEFORE WE get into this, I
need to say, still no luck on
finding my mouse. That bad boy
is probably long gone.
I’m beginning to dread future
hide and seek games, will I
disappear too?
Over the last week Vittoria
has started holding some things
closer however, and it’s very
cute.
She gets her favourite soft
toys, like her Dragon, wraps
her wee arms around them and
gives them a big, smiling, moving
side-to-side cuddle.
Dragon even gets a couple of
kisses on his cheek sometimes.
Very, very cute.
She even gave someone else’s
teddy a big cuddle at Baby
Times. I can’t wait to see her
give her friends big hugs too.
This week started out productively.
Over the weekend Laura
and I cleaned the whole house
(hence the mouse update) with
a focus on Vittoria’s room.
Her room has seen a lot of use
for storage, including her cot.
We’ve been co-sleeping with
the wee darling for a while now.
She got sick last year which
ended a joyous run of full nights
of sleep until we gave in and let
her into the big bed.
VITTORIA
& Matt
Long road ahead
getting back to cot
Thing is, getting her back into
sleeping in her own bed is not
going to be easy.
In bed with one of us, she can
roll over, touch us and get reassured
straight away that she’s
safe and with her parents.
In the cot, not so much.
It really highlights how much
like a little prison those things
are when you see your daughter
standing there, holding the bars
and crying like the world just
ended.
And if you’re used to having
your parents next to you when
you settle back to sleep, Dad just
holding your hand is not going
to cut it.
So we’ve got a long road ahead
to get her back to a place where
she feels safe in her cot and
happy to sleep there all night.
A lot of that road will involve
very little sleep too.
To add to the difficulty, this
week Vittoria and I have got
some sort of cold. It may be
unfair, but I’m pretty sure I
got it off her since we spend so
much time in close proximity.
Complaints over
pathway bottleneck
• By Louis Day
CONSTRUCTION of the
Christchurch Yacht Club’s new
boat shed has created a choke
point on the coastal pathway.
The $1.3 million boat shed will
have a deck which will add 4m of
width to the pathway, eliminating
the choke point.
However, Christchurch Yacht
Club boat shed project manager
Frank Coppens said the deck
would not be ready until June or
July.
Linwood-Central-Heathcote
Community Board member and
city councillor Sara Templeton
said a temporary solution is being
looked at.
secretary Pat McIntosh said
the current state of the path
was disgraceful and something
needed to be done before June.
“We have had a number of
complaints from residents
about the condition of the path,
especially affected being the elderly
and those with infants and
children. There is no access for
the disabled to Sumner without
using a car,” she said.
Cr Templeton hoped a
temporary solution could be put
in place.
“I have asked for city council
staff to meet with the CYC again
in the next week to come up
with a temporary solution to the
narrowness of the path while the
platform and permanent pathway
are being built,” she said.
Help get rid of chlorine
WITH FEBRUARY traditionally
the hottest month of the year,
the city council is reminding
residents to keep doing their bit
to save water so it can work to
remove chlorine from the city’s
water supply as soon as possible.
The council is aiming for
the city’s drinking water to be
un-chlorinated by May, which
will mark 12 months since it
rolled out chlorine treatment
in response to advice from the
Canterbury medical officer of
health.
City council water supply
improvement programme
manager Helen Beaumont said
achieving the target depends
partly on people continuing to
use less water so wells can be
taken offline and upgraded as
needed.
“We’re definitely not out of the
woods yet, and we really need
people to keep watching their
water use so we can upgrade our
wells and continue to cut back
the chlorine across the city,” Ms
Beaumont said.
“We’re experiencing much
hotter days now, with less rain
in between, so the temptation
is to leave the garden sprinklers
on for longer or to turn them on
more often.
CONSERVE: The city council is asking people to only water
their gardens on alternate days between 9pm and 7am,
when it’s cooler.
“We have no issue with people
watering their lawns or gardens,
but we do ask they use a handheld
hose or watering can, which
avoids any waste, and only water
on alternate days between 9pm
and 7am, when it’s cooler.”
Sprinklers and garden
irrigators are the biggest users of
household water, but there are
plenty of other ways people can
help save, said Ms Beaumont.
“Taking shorter showers,
doing one less laundry load
a week, and sweeping your
driveway instead of hosing it
are all ways people can help
save water. It may not seem like
much, but a lot of people doing a
little really adds up.”
By May the city council
expects to have completed
temporary upgrades on 19
below-ground wells and to have
raised another 41 above ground,
bringing the total number of
secure wells to 98 out of 140.
“If we can upgrade those wells
as planned, we should have
enough un-chlorinated water to
supply the city over the winter
months, when we use about 50
per cent less water than we do
over summer.”
Thursday February 14 2019 17
Have your say on the
planned rates increase
AS A COUNCIL, we have
signed off our draft Annual
Plan 2019-20, which will go
out for consultation from
the beginning of March
until the start of April.
This is the second year of
the 2018-2028 Long Term
Plan. We had anticipated
an average rates rise of 5.5
per cent. However, higher
than expected growth in
the city has enabled this
to be brought back to an
average of 4.96 per cent.
We continue to look for
savings. And this is where
your submissions can help
us focus our attention.
A significant part of this
year’s work is the drinking
water supply improvement
programme. We are
working towards the day
when we can remove the
chlorine from the water.
However, that won’t be
the end of the programme
as Government will be
introducing new standards
and we will need to ensure
that we meet those. Safe
and good to drink –
that’s our drinking water
mantra. There is also
SAFE: The drinking
water supply
improvement
programme will be a
significant part of the
city council’s work over
the next year.
considerable work still
to be done on the roads,
footpaths and parks. City
councillors spoke about the
importance of maintaining
our ‘Garden City’ and
ensuring residents are
getting the levels of service
they expect. We will
Mayor
Lianne Dalziel
be looking carefully at
budgets to ensure there is
sufficient money to deliver
on those.
Another increase next
year sits with the waste
minimisation levy, due
to EcoCentral being hit
by the increased costs of
processing recyclable waste
offshore. This is a major
issue and needs a New
Zealand Inc solution.
So get ready to make
your submission.
Remember to talk to your
local community board
members, as well as city
councillors. We are all
looking forward to your
feedback.
on a show investigating the impact of toxic masculinity
in society.
Playwright aims to break
down ‘toxic’ stereotypes
Artistic director Tom Eason wants to shine a light on the concept of toxic masculinity.
He’s writing a one man show to get people talking about the issue and its impact on
mental health and well-being. Georgia O’Connor-Harding reports
TOM EASON has always felt an
“uncomfortable” pressure to be
more masculine.
While the co-artistic director of
theatre company Two Productions
has only noticed its impact
recently, he said many males face
pressure to be masculine from
birth.
To address the harm it can cause
Eason, 31, has started writing a
solo-show called Mainman, which
aims to get people talking about
toxic masculinity.
“When we make shows like this
we are less trying to finish with a
statement . . . and more wanting to
pose the question in all of its crazy
complexity in a way that is able to
be talked about,” he said.
Looking back, when Eason
attended Christchurch Boys’ High
School, an interest in theatre led
to him being labelled a “drama
fag” by his peers.
“You definitely felt like the
third or fourth tier in that social
environment. There was the top
tier of the rugby players and
everyone else was below them,”
he said.
Fifteen years later, he noticed
the same pressure to be masculine
being imprinted on his 15-monthold
son.
“It can be as subtle as, for
example, none of the clothes our
families have bought for our son
have any colour other than blue,
black and grey.”
Looking back on his own
experiences, he said toxic
masculinity was when people
tried to get him to conform to
what they viewed as normal for
his gender.
“I think the objective of this
show is to ask the question of how
we can do the opposite of that.”
Although the show is still
in its early stages, Eason plans
to discuss jokes made by male
comedians who have been accused
of sexual misconduct – such as
well-known American-Mexican
comedian Louis C.K.
He will look at some of the jokes
made before the comedian’s fall
from grace and question what
may have been happening in his
personal life at the time the jokes
were written.
Eason said toxic masculinity
can have an impact on people’s
mental health and well-being.
Ministry of Health statistics
show between 1996-2015 suicide
rates for New Zealand men were
at least 2.5 times the rate of
females.
“That is why you see it in the
suicide rates. Even if you are part
of a group that is super-masculine,
I think they feel the same
pressure. The idea of masculinity
is toxic – if we could get rid of it, it
would be good for both groups.”
Eason said one of the most
memorable experiences of toxic
masculinity he has witnessed was
at a cafe with friends.
“I wasn’t getting coffee at the
time so I ordered green tea. The
person serving us, who was the
manager of the cafe, said to us ‘do
you want a tampon with that?’ I
was just stunned . . . afterwards
I was thinking that was just so
offensive to so many different
groups of people.”
Eason hopes the show will be
performed at the Christchurch
Arts Festival, which starts in July.
The Star
Joanna Norris
From a top role in the fourth estate
Just over a year ago Joanna Norris moved from her role as editor of
The Press to run events, tourism and economic agency ChristchurchNZ. She
talks to Julia Evans about her 20-year journalism career, an early encounter
with David Bain and her love of the outdoors
INFLUENCE: After five years as editor of The Press, Joanna
Norris moved into a new role as chief executive of
ChristchurchNZ.
PHOTO: MARTIN HUNTER
How have you found your first
year at ChristchurchNZ?
It’s been an incredible year. A
year where we’ve had to do a lot
of foundation-laying to make sure
the organisation comes together
in the way that it was intended.
It’s really cool to be working in
this role, at this time in the city’s
history so I feel really fortunate
and privileged.
Have there been any
challenges?
I think there are a number of
challenges facing Christchurch
and its been understanding
which of those to address and
in which order. It’s really been
there’s so much we could do and
so much impact we could have,
the challenge really has been
prioritisation and making sure
that we don’t spread ourselves too
thinly. We are, relatively speaking,
quite a small agency and we
need to make sure where we do
intervene, we’re doing so with the
greatest impact.
What have some highlights
been?
I think the highlights are
seeing the city come alive and
in particular the CBD. In the
time that I’ve been in this role,
we’ve had a real activation of the
central city and we’ve got a real
glimpse of what we will become
as a city. But also playing a role in
shaping, firstly in the economic
insights that the city has about
itself and understanding what
our challenges are and what
the opportunities are. But also
helping Christchurch become
proud of itself and tell that story
about who we are and that we
have this incredible city and
helping people feel proud of that
is really cool.
What attributes does the city
have that will lure people to
either live here or visit?
We’ve done a lot of work to
understand what it is that is
special about Christchurch so we
can tell an authentic story about
the advantages here. One of the
very first and fundamental things
we have is the lifestyle that we
have and the proximity we have
to our incredible environment.
Whether its the Port Hills or
the beaches and I’m very lucky
to live at the beach in Sumner.
So my kids and I and husband
and I love walking on the beach,
we’ve just got this wonderful
life. So there’s the lifestyle piece,
there’s the fact that its affordable
in comparison to other parts of
the country. We’ve built this new,
beautiful resilient city and we
have a lot of the big grown up city
amenities. We’ve got four tertiary
institutions, a skilled work force
and underpinning all of this, is
this sense of Christchurch being
able to carve a path. The way we
term it is that we’re explorers,
we always have been, we always
will be, and Christchurch has
this wonderful opportunity
to continue that sense of
exploration. All of that packaged
into one great sized city that’s easy
to get around, why wouldn’t you
live here?
Thursday February 14 2019 23
to giving Christchurch direction
We’ve been through an
enormous amount as a city, a lot of
pain, and as a journalist and editor
I witnessed and heard so many
stories of pain throughout the
post-quake period. Everywhere we
looked there was sadness. It was an
incredible trauma that the city has
gone through and some members
of our community are still going
through. But the flip side of that,
we’ve had this opportunity to
reinvent who we are, rebuild the
city, build stronger, safer buildings
and that’s been a real advantage for
us now.
How did you end up living in
the city yourself?
The interesting thing for me
about Christchurch, is that
I’m not from Christchurch, I
didn’t grow up here. I grew up
in Dunedin, but I was born in
Kaitaia. My husband and I and
kids moved back here in 2012, we
made a kind of crazy decision to
move to what Christchurch was
at that time. Just before I took
this role, we had an opportunity
to move back to Wellington,
which was where we most
recently moved from but we
chose Christchurch. It’s the city
that gets under your skin and
becomes part of who you are.
When you become involved the
BIG STORY: Joanna
Norris’ journalism
career started after
being in a class with
David Bain at Otago
University, while the
first big story she
worked on was the
murder of Ben Smart
and Olivia Hope in
Marlborough.
reconstruction of the city and
telling that story as a journalist
and now in my new role, they are
once in a lifetime opportunities.
Cities are always organic, I think
that’s the thing that’s important
for Christchurch to remember.
There is no end point, there never
is for a city. Cities are by their
nature, organic and evolving.
Do you have any personal
goals for your time at
ChristchurchNZ?
People often ask me this
question, like what’s my five-year
plan, sort of thing. I have very
clear goals for this organisation,
we’ve got 10-year goals that we’re
committed to for the city. So
the answer is absolutely from a
professional point of view, but
from a personal point of view, no.
It’s really just about being as useful
to this community as I can be with
the skills and experience that I
have. Also enjoying life and taking
the time to spend with family.
How and when did your
journalism career begin?
I was studying music at Otago
University, I was doing a double
degree in English and music, I
play the violin. David Bain was
in a class of mine. We were a very
small class, there were only about
20 of us. My then boyfriend and
I at the time made the decision to
leave Dunedin, it was sort of quite
tainted by that experience (the
Bain murders). We transferred
up to Auckland University and I
finished up my English degree.
I realised in the course of that, it
was when North and South was
a very, very powerful magazine
and I just realised the power of
storytelling and how it can better
communities with these really
important stories that we tell
about ourselves. I then went to
journalism school in Auckland
and my first job was at the
Dominion Post in Wellington.
You did a stint at the Otago
Daily Times as well?
I did. I was living and working
in England, in Cambridge with
my then boyfriend, now husband.
He’s a technology writer, we met at
journalism school. There are three
couples from our class and we’re
all still married. My father was
diagnosed with terminal cancer,
my parents lived in Dunedin,
so I moved back and worked at
the ODT. In my last role [South
Island editor-in-chief for Fairfax],
I had 19 community papers in
my portfolio, so I have had a very
close contact with community
papers.
Our People
‘We’ve had this opportunity
•From page 23
When you started your career,
did you ever think you would
end up as an editor?
No, I’m not that deliberate.
Editing is an incredible privilege
and amazing fun and very hard as
well. I was just very fortunate to
get that opportunity.
Have any of your stories stuck
with you over the last 20 years?
Yes, there are some really, really
powerful ones. The very first
big story I covered as a junior
reporter at the Dominion. I was
working over Christmas and a
young couple [Ben Smart and
Olivia Hope] were reported
missing in the Marlborough
Sounds. Those stories always stick
with you. Then more recently,
Christchurch. It was interesting
in itself arriving into a city
where you hadn’t been, I was in
Wellington when the quakes of
2010 and 2011 happened. We
were working very closely with
the team at The Press and in fact
on the evening of February 22,
we in Wellington helped The
Press team put out that edition
that landed on people’s driveways
on February 23. That was pretty
crazy and incredible. That night
the reporters all worked, they
filed their copy and we helped
produce that edition of The Press
from the Wellington newsroom
and that next morning that Press
was on people’s driveways. I
used to talk about that publicly
and people would cry because
that moment when no one knew
what was happening and this
was the outside world and that’s
the power of the media, it’s so
important.
Have you had any big
fumbles?
That’s the nature of news. There
have definitely been things that
I have reflected on later and
thought we could have handled
that differently or we could have
put more thought into that or I
wish we’d had more information
before we published that, we
would have been better off. That
being said, I always describe
the media as a bit of a blunt
instrument, in that you wobble
towards a position of truth
with each iteration of a story.
Journalists are not academics
sitting for three years doing a
thesis and producing a body
of work. You work to whatever
time you work to, weekly, daily
or digital, you get to the truth
and you hold those in power
accountable.
Do you miss working in the
media?
There’s a lot I miss about the
media, absolutely. But I am
also very fortunate to work
with journalists right across the
spectrum and that’s quite a treat
as well.
What do you see for the future
of journalism?
I have great hope for the
media. I think the commercial
proposition is deeply challenging
and very, very difficult in a New
Zealand environment where scale
is a challenge. There are only five
million people, there are only a
certain number of consumers
who are prepared to pay for a
product and a limited number
of advertisers. But journalism
is so fundamental to a safe and
strong society that there must
be a way through this and I
think journalism is as good now
as its ever been. Some of the
investigative work that’s done
by teams across the country by
all media agencies really makes
a difference and its absolutely
essential that the fourth estate
keeps an eye on people in power.
It has to continue.
Are you surprised or
disappointed by the moves made
by Channel Nine in Australia to
sell New Zealand assets such as
The Press?
No, media ownership
changes, it always has done. I
think when I worked for, what
was then Fairfax, I think I
worked under three different
owners in the course of my career.
I always said to my newsroom,
you just do your job, your job
is to be a journalist and hold
the powerful to account and
be a watchdog and champion.
It’s other people’s jobs to worry
about what the governance and
ownership looks like. If you’re
continually worried about what’s
around the corner, you don’t do
your job properly.
to reinvent who we are’
Do you have any advice for
any aspiring journalists who
would want to get into the
industry or young reporters?
Just stay curious. But secondly,
know the power that you have. As
a young journo, you don’t quite
understand the words that you
write have an impact and often
you don’t see that impact. It will
change someone’s behaviour, it
will happen behind the scenes
or the language that you use will
change someone’s life. Just always
be cognisant of the power that
you have both to do good and
damage.
What made you jump from
journalism to the corporate
world?
I had worked as the editor of
The Press for five years and had
overseen a lot of change in that
time. Some of that change was
really challenging to lead. I was
aware I would need to do a lot
more of that change management
as time went on. Again, I was
aware it was likely the next step
in my career at what was then
Fairfax would have been moving
back to Wellington. At the same
time as I was considering all of
this, this job became available
and people had conversations
with me about this role. So I
had to weigh all of that up and
I realised the city was at a bit
of a watershed period as the
elections were on, there was a lot
of change going on in the city. I
saw, without wanting to overstate
my relevance, an opportunity to
influence things from inside the
tent rather than observing from
the outside. I was very fortunate
that I was with a leadership
cohort within the city that had
gone through a period of the city’s
history. Then I had a chance to
play a different leadership role
in the city. It’s been interesting
observing the gendership in
the city. When I first came here
I was a bit different from the
previous editors. I would go into
these networking meetings in
the city and I would be the only
woman. It was really weird and
LEADERSHIP:
Joanna Norris
said she moved
to the corporate
world so she
could play
a new role
in the city’s
development.
confronting and scary. That’s not
so much the case anymore, there
are a lot more peers who are
women. A lot of great men and
women.
Can you tell me a little bit
about your family?
I’ve got two kids who are
amazing. They’re nine and
11. My husband Blayne is a
journo, so I supposed I’ve got a
naturally affinity to journalism,
we’ve grown up together. He’s
a freelancer and he’s primary
caregiver for our kids. I think,
and he and I often talk about this,
it’s one of those things that people
don’t often talk about, is it’s really
hard to have two careers. You’ve
really got to think about that as
you start out in life and I think
it’s important for couples to be
really honest about that together
and work out how they’re going
to manage that because kids are
a full-time job in themselves. It’s
full on. We always thought that
it would get less work as they
went to school, but actually it
gets more because they get more
sophisticated in their needs. We’re
lucky and I’m lucky I get a lot of
time with the kids as well. Blayne
and I share it pretty well, although
he did go surfing this morning,
which meant that I was late for
work but that’s okay.
What do you do on a day off?
I’ve got a good work life
balance, I work pretty hard at
that. So we’ll go up into the hills,
we’ll go on tramps. We love
tramping as a family. We spent
quite a lot of time up in Hanmer.
We’re a real beach family. Blayne
has taught Evie and Ollie to surf,
they’re good wee surfers.
Gardening
Inject some colour with geraniums
• By Henri Ham
WANT TO inject some bright
colour into a super sunny spot in
your garden? How about planting
some geraniums?
These hardy, sun-loving plants
are perfect for those prime spots
in your garden that often get too
hot or are slightly too exposed for
other flowers.
Geraniums are a cute lowspreading
plant, with flowers that
push above its foliage – like little
posies.
Try violet and bulls eye mix
varieties, they bloom in pinks,
reds, and oranges, but if you’re
after a classic white they should
be in garden centres around
March.
Now, to plant your seedlings.
Choose a well-drained, moderately
sunny spot – geraniums like
four to six hours sun a day. I like
to dig some compost or general
fertiliser through the garden first,
to give them the best possible
start.
Dig small holes 8cm deep,
roughly 25 cm apart. If you’re
after suggestions on what to grow
with your geraniums, livingstone
daisies, lobelia and alyssum are
my top picks. They all like the
same conditions and look lovely
together.
Give your geraniums a good
initial watering, and keep this up
for the first few weeks to really
help them get established. Once
you’ve got them going, you can
relax a bit more on how much
you water.
In around four to six weeks
you’ll start to see come colour
coming through on top of their
dark leaves. Deadheading your
blooms will encourage more to
come through. And pinching the
stems will promote bushier rather
than leggier flowers.
If you’re not sure what pinching
is – it’s simply breaking off the top
2cm of the growing tip of a plant
to encourage it to grow out wider,
VIVID:
Geraniums
grow well
in pots or
as bedding
plants.
before it grows up. The same
way you pinch off the very top of
your basil (and other herbs) so it
doesn’t go to seed.
Geraniums make great bedding
plants, but are also perfect for
pots. If you plant in pots, always
start with a fresh, good-quality
potting mix.
Adding stones or old broken
pots at the bottom of the pot will
help with the drainage.
If your pots are in an exposed
concrete area think about how
hot they will get during the day.
You can always elevate them
onto some wooden batons or
bricks so they don’t conduct as
much heat.
Painting the inside of a
pot can also help retain its moisture.
Remember to check what
sort of paint or seal you’re using
first and whether it’s appropriate
for plants.
Geraniums also make for a
lovely indoor pot plant. Place
them near a window and if they’re
given enough sunlight, they can
flower all year long. Now that’s
almost plant perfection.
Keep planting lettuce seedlings to ensure supply
• By Henri Ham
LETTUCE SALADS have been a
headliner in my kitchen lately.
This hot summer heat we’ve
been having has kept me busy
watering in the garden, but there’s
been a lot of harvesting taking
place too. This also means I’ve had
to replant lettuce seedlings (every
few weeks) to continue my prolific
supply.
The good thing is, even for the
most novice of gardeners, you can’t
go wrong planting a few lettuces.
They’re simple to grow, quick to
produce and take up relatively little
room.
I plant my lettuces all year
round, but really ramp it up from
August through to February. To
ensure I don’t get bored of any one
type, I like to constantly mix up
the varieties I plant.
Buttercrunch and cos are
great for picking off their loose
leaves as you need them. Drunken
woman and great lakes are a larger,
more classic-shaped lettuce, that
I remember from my younger
days.
A new lettuce variety this summer
is tom thumb. It’s the perfect
little lettuce to pop in between
rows of other plants.
It grows small heads (about the
size of a baseball), which are ideal
as a gourmet lettuce for one.
Tom thumb has a lovely mild,
sweet taste. But the reason it’s a
great lettuce to grow at this time
of year is it tolerates high temperatures
very well, and resists bolting.
Once you’ve got your seedlings,
look for a well-drained and
sheltered place to plant them. I
like to dig in some new compost
and sheep pallets at this point too.
Then dig some little holes – 3cm
deep and 15cm apart.
After this, simply water regularly
and watch for slugs. In around
four to six weeks your tom thumbs
should be ready to be harvested.
HARDY: Lettuce is easy to grow and takes up little space
CITY 2 SURF TRAINING PROGRAMME
WEEK 5: Look up and accept the challenge
The training programme will stay the same this week as last week
but may I suggest that you go and explore the geographical options
you have for your training. This means not only exploring your
own neighbourhood but also venturing to places like the Burwood
Plantation, the beach or the Port Hills. Of course it takes a bit more
time as you need transport so the weekend might be the best time
to do this. The best surface to run on is soft, like grass, sand or gravel;
it is easier on the legs so try and do the majority of your sessions on
these types of surfaces if possible. If you have time, venture into the
Port Hills. A good place to start is the track which runs between the
sign of the Takeha and the sign of the Kiwi. This is a gradual incline
which you can do out and back for as far as you can comfortably
go. Once you have mastered this track you can venture beyond
anywhere in the port hills. Jogging on the Port Hills walking tracks
takes a bit of concentration as the terrain underfoot can be uneven.
Walking or jogging and running uphill will automatically increase the
intensity a fraction because you use larger muscle groups. It is a type
of endurance training which will accelerate your strength and fitness
with incredible views of our beautiful city as an extra bonus. Going up,
take small steps and take your time so you stay mainly in zone 1 and
2. Remember that zone 1 is perceived as an easy effort which you can
maintain for very long periods of time. In zone 2 you will get slightly
puffed but you can still have a conversation. Initially take it easy on
the downhill. It can be hard on the legs, so go careful. At this time of
the year the beach is also an attractive option for a workout. The soft
sand will add an extra dimension and help the strength development.
On hot days go for the forest or parks as the shade provided by the
trees will protect you from the blazing sun. Hagley Park is of course
the jewel in the crown as far as parks go with lots of variety and
enough options never to have to do the same route.
TIP OF THE WEEK
Comfort during your training session will greatly
add to your enjoyment. Small issues like shoes which
do not quite fit, wrongly sized, insufficient or too
much clothing can all have big consequences like
blisters, cold exposure, heatstroke or chaffing issues.
In a previous article I have already mentioned the
importance of well-fitting shoes but the same applies
to your running shorts and top. For women there
are special sports bra’s to add to comfort and males
can prevent the much maligned “nipple rash” with
preventative taping over the affected areas.
Flynn still giving back to rugby
• By Gordon Findlater
CRUSADER NO 48 Aaron
Flynn was part of the team that
achieved a three-peat of Super
Rugby titles from 1998-2000.
The halfback’s first match for
the Crusaders ended in a loss to
the Waratahs in 1997. These days
the 49-year-old can be found in
his office at Linfield Park where
he works as Linwood’s club
manager.
Flynn made 24 appearances
for the Crusaders between 1997
and 2000. However, it should
have only been 23 caps. Late in
the stages of a match against
the Hurricanes, Flynn decided
to sub himself on instead of a
proposed change at second-five.
“I can’t remember who it was
but he couldn’t get his tracksuit
off properly so I thought, ‘oh,
this is a joke’, and I just ran
on instead . . . I said to Justin
Marshall – ‘you go to secondfive,
mate’,” said Flynn.
“I got a blasting from (assistant
coach) Steve Hansen, but I said
he was taking ages to get his
tracksuit off. There was only
about 15min to go and we were
pumping them.”
Flynn’s most prominent season
with the Crusaders came in
1998, when he started at halfback
for a majority of the campaign
– including the final which they
won against the Blues – after
Marshall suffered a serious
Achilles tendon injury early in
the year.
“I remember (coach) Wayne
Smith turning round to me when
that happened and saying ‘mate,
you better be ready’.”
Flynn can still be found
running around for Sydenham’s
golden oldies. He also plays
softball and won the B grade
competition with Albion last
year. In his younger days, he was
an infielder at premier club level
and was named in under-16 and
under-18 national tournament
teams.
“I’m 50 this year so that’s it.
I said to my wife I’m going to
finish with both sports this year,
but she reckons I said that five
years ago.”
After his professional playing
career ended in 2000, Flynn
took a role as an event manager
at the Christchurch Casino for
seven years. He then spent 11
years working in recruitment
at Tradestaff and Enterprise
Recruitment.
“That was pretty full-on
through those earthquake years.
It was just madness,” said Flynn.
He has been club manager at
Linwood since 2017. “One of the
directors at Enterprise actually
asked me to be the club manager
at Linwood because he’s on the
board at the club. Even though
I’m a Sydenham boy at heart, it
NEW DIGS: Former Crusaders halfback Aaron Flynn is the
was a great opportunity. We’ve
got an awesome venue here
and it’s one of the best grounds
in Christchurch.” Placing his
allegiance with Linwood has
taken some time.
Over the Super Rugby
season, The Star will
look back each week at
some of the identities
who graced the
Crusaders jersey in the
past and discover where
they are now
His first week on the job at
Linfield Park fittingly saw the
Linwood premier team host
Sydenham.
“I was out on the back field
at Linfield with Tane Norton
and an old Linwood stalwart
went past and asked who we are
playing today. I said Linwood
and he looked at me sideways
. . . I told Tane that if I said that
again he could give me a clip
around the ear.”
Flynn’s family has strong
sporting genes. He is former
Crusaders hooker Corey Flynn’s
uncle. His mother Pat played
softball for New Zealand from
the age of 15. His brother Kieran
played rugby for Canterbury and
Southland in the 1990s. And
another brother, Jamie Flynn,
played for Southland in the
1980s.
At one stage, Sydenham’s
premier side contained five
Flynns.
BIG STAGE: Aaron Flynn
Crusaders 20-13 win over
Rugby final at Eden Park.
Paceman makes mark in
Canterbury T20 campaign
• By Gordon Findlater
IMPOSING PACEMAN Kyle
Jamieson (left) was a shining light
with the white ball in what has
otherwise been a season to forget
for the Canterbury Kings.
Although they finished last
in the T20 Super Smash, the
2.03m right-arm quick was
the competition’s top wickettaker
with 22 – seven ahead
of Blair Tickner and Mitchell
McClenaghan.
However, Jamieson’s career
could have turned out differently
if he had not been approached by
a member of Canterbury’s most
famous cricketing family six years
ago.
The 24-year-old moved to
Christchurch from Auckland
aged 18. When he arrived, he
considered himself a top order
batsman who bowled occasional
medium pace. That quickly
changed after he was spotted
by Dayle Hadlee at an under-19
tournament.
“I started working with Dayle
and he thought it was a bit of a
waste having a six-foot-eight guy
that didn’t really bowl . . . he took
me under his wing and the rest is
history really,” said Jamieson.
After being affected by multiple
long-term foot injuries in his early
years with Canterbury, Jamieson
has been fit since December 2017.
His figures of 3-22 in
Canterbury’s final round-robin
match on Saturday helped the side
to a comfortable seven-wicket win
over Wellington. However, the
highlight of the campaign came in
January when Jamieson recorded
figures of 6-7 – the third best by a
bowler in world T20 history.
“The relative consistency I
was able to put out during the
competition was pleasing,” he
said.
Jamieson’s 22 wickets in 10
T20 matches this season came
from 38.2 overs at an average of
12.68, a strike rate of 10.45, and
an economy rate of 7.27 runs
per over. His statistics make for
impressive reading compared to
the likes of Lockie Ferguson and
Scott Kuggeleijn, who have been
given opportunities with the
Black Caps in T20 matches this
summer.
Ferguson’s career T20 figures
at domestic level are an average
of 25.87, strike rate of 21.0 and an
economy rate of 7.36. Kuggeleijn’s
has a domestic average of 30.62,
strike rate of 21.2 and economy
rate of 7.63.
Since his impressive T20 season,
Jamieson has spoken with Black
Caps coach Gary Stead about
where he stands in the national
ranks. “I think I’m going in a
relatively good direction at the
moment, and if I can continue on
that kind of path, then I’m sure a
chance will come down the track,”
he said.

Highly-rated Australian
guard joins Rams squad
THE Canterbury Rams
have signed a second
highly-rated Australian
guard ahead of this
year’s NBL in the form of
Cameron Gliddon.
The shooting guard is
averaging 13.6 points per
game for the Brisbane
Bullets season making him
the 17th top scorer in the
Australian NBL.
He will join new Rams
coach Mick Downer – who
is the Bullets’ assistant
coach – and fellow Australian
Emmett Naar as the
Rams’ second import. The
pair are likely to combine
to make up the teams
starting backcourt.
Gliddon is known for his
scoring ability, especially
from three-point range
and his experience and
leadership is sure to have
been one of the key reasons
the Rams pursued him.
“I’ve always been interested
in coming across the
pond and getting involved
in the league. I’m very
grateful that Canterbury
reached out and asked
me to join the team. I
look forward to getting to
Christchurch and helping
the team be successful on
and off the court,” said
Gliddon.
As current assistant
coach for the Brisbane
Bullets, Rams head coach,
Mick Downer knows what
Gliddon brings to the table.
“We are so excited at the
Rams with the addition of
one of Australia’s premier
shooting guards,” said
runs from the over for
victory.
“It was pretty desperate
stuff. The fact I hadn’t
bowled properly in a long
time made it even more
desperate,” said Deans.
After conceding two
runs from the first delivery,
Deans replied by clean
bowling Northern’s No 8.
The next two balls
NEW MAN: Cameron Gliddon will join a Rams team
with strong Australian links.
Downer.
“He’s been a proven
performer over and over
in clutch moments in the
ANBL and played a key
role as the captain of the
Cairns Taipans before
venturing south to join the
Brisbane Bullets.”
Gliddon attended
Concordia University in
the United States where
in his senior year he led
the Eagles to the NAIA
produced singles, one
of which came from a
dropped catch. A dot ball
from the fifth delivery
meant Northern required
four runs from the final
ball and three to tie. A
swipe across the line saw
the ball fall into a gap
at mid-wicket before a
run-out as Northern were
attempting a third run.
Earlier in the week,
The Star
national championship,
going on to be named the
All-Tournament MVP.
Following his college
career Gliddon returned to
Australia and was named
the ANBL rookie of the
year in 2013. He has also
represented Australia,
where he helped the Boomers
win gold at both the
FIBA Asia Cup and the
2018 Commonwealth
Games.
Deans bowls Canty to victory
THREE-PEAT: Canterbury have gone undefeated
at the national over 60s cricket tournament for
the last three years.
Canterbury had pool
play wins over Central
Districts, Otago and
Northern.
Deans now plans to turn
out for the New Zealand
over 60s side in three
matches against Australia
starting later this month.
But first he will have to
overcome a finger injury
which has him sporting a
splint.

IT WAS A case of mission
accomplished, I was asked
by my daughter if I would
help her shift flats.
Along with a stack of
shoes that I didn’t think
was possible for a 24-yearold
to accumulate, there
was the usual amount
of furniture – duchess,
cabinets and bed. I had the
perfect vehicle to carry out
the process – a Hyundai
Santa Fe – a large sevenseat
sport utility vehicle,
of course, by lowering the
rear rows of seats you get a
very healthy wagon section
which swallowed everything
we could load into it,
mattress aside.
That’s one of the reasons
why SUVs have become
so popular, they are adaptable
and versatile and, in
the Santa Fe’s case, it is also
a plush luxury car which
impresses with its refinement.
As history has served to
prove, I missed a drive in
the previous generation
model, circumstances constantly
conspiring against
me getting into the vehicle.
That aside, the latest generation
model is simply
stunning, it is grand in its
design and manufacture.
The new Santa Fe is allnew,
it lands here in four
variants, petrol and diesel,
all with four-wheel-drive
starting from $59,990.
Bearing in mind the old
V6 engine is gone, today’s
petrol-powered Santa Fe
is a 2.4-litre four-cylinder
unit.
This evaluation focuses
on the range-topping
Limited with Hyundai’s
magnificent 2.2-litre diesel
engine. The four-cylinder
turbocharged unit is rated
at 147kW (3800rpm) with
440Nm of torque available
from 1570rpm to 2750rpm.
Not only are these outputs
impressive in terms
of flexibility and outright
grunt, it is one of the
smoothest engines you are
ever likely to find in a vehicle
of this type.
The engine is hooked
to a recently-developed
eight-speed automatic
transmission, something
that is shared with
Hyundai’s partnership with
Kia. Interaction between
the engine and gearbox is
smooth and seamless, and
the gear ratios are structured
so that they work
efficiently with the engine’s
power and torque bands,
HYUNDAI SANTA FE: Spacious interior.
especially so the mid-range
rev spread.
In this form, the Santa
Fe is relatively quick for
a vehicle which weighs
in at almost two-tonne.
According to my stopwatch
it will make 100km/h from
a standstill in 9.4sec and
80km/h to 120km/h in
6.2sec.
As you would expect in
new-age SUV, the Santa Fe
is fitted with the latest technologies
for safety, along
with a full raft of features
for comfort and convenience.
• Price – Hyundai
Santa Fe Limited,
$82,990
• Dimensions –
Length, 4770mm;
width, 1890mm;
height, 1705mm
• Configuration –
Four-cylinder, fourwheel-drive,
2188cc,
147kW, 440Nm,
eight-speed
automatic.
• Performance –
0-100km/h, 9.4sec
• Fuel usage –
7.5l/100km
At $82,990, it really
needs to be well-specced,
it is competing with the
major European brands,
and if you throw in a newcomer
to the large SUV
market – Holden’s Acadia –
then Hyundai know it has
to provide a good level of
fitment.
Major items of specification
include full leather
trim with electrically
adjustable seats up front
(also heated). There is
head-up display, paddle
shift gear selectors and
the choice of several drive
modes which the driver
can use to suit his or her
driving preference. These
are on top of items that you
would normally expect to
find in a top-grade model.
Hyundai has upped the
ante in terms of efficiency
in this age where fuel prices
play such a big part in the
buying choice. The Santa
Fe returned some interesting
fuel usage information
during my time with the
test car. At 100km/h in top
gear the big diesel sips fuel
instantaneously at around
seven-litres per 100km
(41mpg), turning over at
just 1500rpm. A test average
of 9l/100km (31mpg)
is respectable for vehicle
weight, and compares well
to Hyundai’s combined
cycle claim of 7.5l/100km
(37mpg).
Not only is the diesel
Santa Fe an economical
choice, it will offer the versatility
you would expect
from a family wagon. It
cruises the highway with
dignity, yet it also tackles
the hard yards when presented
with an off-the-seal
excursion, although at just
185mm, the driver does
need to keep in mind that
ground clearance isn’t huge.
The suspension is fully
independent all-round –
struts up front and multiple
links on the rear – the
spring and dampers are
only firmed moderately.
There’s no mistaking the
suspension locates four
driveshafts, but the ride is
far from abrasive.
It was good to be back
behind the wheel of a Santa
Fe. I’ve driven a lot of
Hyundai product in recent
months and it all stands up
to be counted in terms of
quality and sophistication.
The new Santa Fe
lands at a time when
sales in the large SUV
sector are still rising. It has
a lot of competition but
with such a broad range
there is a Santa Fe for all
budgets.
Fix those minor
defects
Start out front, cleaning, clearing and decluttering
the yard to make a good impression on buyers.
It’s a rare house that doesn’t have
defects. Even newly renovated ones
can have features that detract for
buyers. But there are ways for sellers
to deflect attention from them without
pretending they’re not there. The three
main ways of dealing with defects are:
1. Fix them.
2. Draw the eye away from them.
3. Use them as a selling point.
Simple defects can be fixed easily.
Start out front. Overgrown bushes can
be trimmed, or replaced with a few
matching plants, old fences and front
doors can be painted or stained, and
the paths cleaned.
Do this even if a property is a do-up.
You want to give the impression that
buyers can move into the house and
chip away at the work in their own
time.
If you have time and money, paint
sills and eaves using accents.
Inside, the first thing buyers see is
the hallway, which can be brightened
up with a lick of paint. The neutral
paint trick can also be used to paint
over dated wallpaper, completely
changing the look and feel of a tired
house.
Bathrooms and kitchens are
important to buyers, and the eye settles
on vanities and benches. These can be
resurfaced relatively quickly to give a
modern look.
Oamaru
NEW LISTINGS
If the seller can’t repaint or tile
the bathroom bring in high quality
matching towels, which become a
feature in the room and draw the eye
from the less than desirable walls and
features. Nice vases and flowers will do
the same.
Replacing handles and knobs to
draw attention away from the units
themselves. This reduces the number
of “I have to do this” thoughts in
potential buyers’ minds.
Drawing the eye away from a
multitude of sins is exactly the thing
to do.
If you see an empty house the eye
always goes to marks on the carpet
and walls and this will lower the price
expectation.”
Drawing the eye to the furniture and
furnishings, creates better flow, and de
cluttering makes buyers feel the home
would be a nice place to live in.
The other way to handle the
property’s defects is to raise them with
the buyer before they see them.
If the carpet is bad, for example,
you can say: “Hey, they were going to
replace the carpet but they decided to
leave it to you to choose a new carpet
and priced it accordingly.”
Finally, good old fashioned elbow
grease is essential in all properties
to remove those sins that are simply
cleanable.
EXCITING news! Concrete work for the
next stage of the Richmond Club’s
redevelopment is underway. This stunning
new architecturally designed building is
going to be impressive.
“The building will serve as the main Club
facility,” said Jimmy Summerfield, general
manager. “As well as a 500 capacity
Members Lounge, it will accommodate a
restaurant, bistro, three international grade
squash courts, a multi-purpose function
room, pool and snooker hall, and a live
entertainment venue with pull down
screens for live sport.”
Jimmy, a born and bred Cantabrian with
a solid background in hospitality, was
appointed the role of general manager at the
end of last year. Prior to this the
internationally award winning Mixiologist
ran his own hospitality businesses including
the well-respected Flying Burrito Brothers.
“Clubs need to develop for the future
without forgetting their history. We expect
the redevelopment to appeal to a wider
demographic. What we are offering will be
fantastic, making us one of the best clubs in
NZ.”
Taking pride in understanding customers
needs, Jimmy says the club will offer a more
family friendly environment while
continuing to promote club traditions and
sporting sections.
New member’s welcome. Enquire now
about joining this innovative club.
